Size Matters: Suns to be killed on the glass?

The Suns are undersized at the 4 and 5

Star-divide

The team, as currently constructed, is going to get killed next year on the boards.  I'm not sure what our lineup is to be but at best (height wise) it will be Lopez and Stoudemire at the 4 and 5.   The lineup might possibly be Stouemire and Frye at 4 and 5 which isn't a great thing since Stoudemire and Frye are known for being slightly below par on rebounding.

Here's a list of our guys 6'10" and taller according to offiical Suns Roster:

Stoudemire 6'10" Lopez 7', and Frye 6'11".   That's it.  3 guys.   Clark and Amundsun are 6'9".

We do not match up well with some of the top teams...  Consider:

LA Lakers  - 5 guys

Andrew Bynum 7', Pau Gasol 7', Mbenga 7', Odom 6'10" (FA), Elonu (unsigned draft pick) 6'10"

Spurs - 5 guys

Duncan 6'11", Matt Boner 6'10", Gooden 6'10" (FA), Haislip 6'10", Mahinmi 6'11"

Dallas  - 4 guys

Dampier 6'11",  Ryan Hollins 7' (FA), Jawai 6'10", Nowitzski 7'

Besides Lopez, we got no one over 7 foot on the roster.    Lopez didn't really play a lot last year, so he's pretty much an unknown factor.    Will he get in foul trouble as he adjusts to more playing time.   You bet he will, he's shown those tendencies already.

Kerr?   What's up?  Small ball is cool and all but come on, we need some size.

We could definately use another big guy at the 5 spot. I don’t see Frye as an effective starter, especially against the teams you mention above and a few others. Lopez is the only 7-footer we have but don’t know if he will be able to carry the load. If he can play like his brother in New Jersey, then we’ll be alright. Actually we’ll be in great shape if he can play like Brooke. But just in case, I’d like to see us pick up another 7-footer or close to with some experience who can rebound and protect the basket. If he can score a dozen points a game, even better. Obviously, getting someone like Chandler, assuming he is recovered from his injury and can play effectively, is ideal. Or, I like Camby in LA where they are already loaded up with bigs. He is a solid rebounder, can block shots and is athletic. Plus, with Amar’e at PF and Nash, Richardson, and Hill playing uptempo offense, we’d be able to put up points on anyone.

Clark is 6'10"

Size isn’t everything…

Amundson is a much better rebounder then Frye (and Matt Bonner)

but I agree that this team will struggle on the glass unless Amare works his ass off on the glass (and gives up a little of his offense) and Lopez really has a much better season then anyone expects

There is going to be one open roster spot once Wallace and Sasha are gone. Taylor Griffin is working for that spot but I still think the Suns will be looking at other bigs in Vegas. I will talk to Dave Griffin about this for sure

6'9

Maybe 6’10" was his college height (exaggerated). http://www.nba.com/suns/roster/ says 6’’9"

What else is new =D

We had size and we traded it away. I cringe all the time at the Laker front line of Bynum, Gasol and Odom.

On the flip, Barkley was just fine as a grossly undersized PF. I’d say we need “width” more than “height.”

I just want players that can play.

Who are these guys again?

Milsap

That sounds like Milsap. He’s a rebounding machine and a bit short for a PF 6’8".

Don't know about size....but we definitely need more defense at that center position...

and not someone SLOW like Shaq. If Chandler were healthy, he’d be a great fit. Trade those expiring contracts for someone that can run, defend, and block.

Fropez

Run, defend, and block that should be Lopez. He should be good once he gains experience.

When we were closest to beating the Spurs, back in the 06/07 season...

How many 7 footers did we have? If I remember right, we were just a Robert Horry hip-check away from making the finals just a few short years ago, and our 5 spot was manned by Amare, surrounded by Raja Bell, Steve Nash, Shawn Marion & a combination of Boris Diaw, Kurt Thomas, & Jumain/James Jones. There wasn’t a single 7 footer on the team that year, and yet we ran up a 61-21 record and would ahve beatent Dallas in the Conference finals if it were not for suspensions during the 2nd round vs San Antonio. Small ball works fine as long as at least one of the undersized 4/5 players is a good rebounder/defender (Marion & Thomas in this case) and the team takes and makes a lot of high percentage shots, pestering the other team into worse shots (Bell, Marion). We don’t need big bodies, we need active bodies that can force turnovers and get transition buckets off of those turnovers. The object of the game is to out-score the other team. Our defense should be built just like our offense, for speed that wears the other team out.

With that said, I don’t like Lopez, he’s just not fast enough, but I would love a healthy Camby or Chandler. Yes, we do still need a lock down perimeter player, but if utilized J-Rich’s offense could slightly outweigh his defensive deficiencies, especially he can learn to play the passing lanes and force the occasional turnover, and then get out and run. SSOL + forcing turnovers = very good team that could surprise everybody.

Lopez is very fast for his size

That’s not his problem. He just doesn’t know where to be or what to do but that guy can really run the floor and he’s at least as fast as Chandler on trapping and recovering on the pick and roll

by Seth Pollack on Jul 13, 2009 1:41 PM MDT up reply actions   0 recs

I'll defer to you on this one

maybe it’s just his being out of position that makes it look like he’s not fast enough, and it’s not like Kurt Thomas was the fastest guy out there either.

Funky, good catch… I forgot Dallas flamed out vs Golden State that year…

Just a correction

Rodman is the best rebounder of the modern era

and it’s not close. He is only 6’7".

Better Than I Thought

I agree with the concerns about the center spot but our apparent line-up is better than I thought it would be. Doesn’t mean the Suns don’t have issues but I like the idea that Steve Kerr & Company are starting to show some respect for Amare and Grant Hill. They need to build on those two.
And now, if they use Ben Wallace and Sasha properly, we could get the last piece in the puzzle that we need – a strong center who can make it up the court and is committed to playing on both ends.
While it is virtually certain that Ben Wallace will retire and free up some cash, does anyone know what the plan is for Sasha? Can he fill a hole in the starting roster? Does he have what it takes for the real run-’n-gun?

build on grant hill?

the guy has a year, maybe two left and he’s done. he’s a great guy, and i liked what you said about the respect, just not what you said about building on grant hill.

and, as for sasha, buy him out. he’ll give us savings we need, and we can sign a player in taylor griffin that will probably do just as well as him, for much, much cheaper. i don’t think we’ll find any takers for a trade for his expiring contract, unless we give up another player as well, and right now, the suns need to hold onto everyone.

they’ve dodged enough bullets this summer as is.

Wallace And Sasha

Wallace has been bought out for … wait for it… cash savings for Sarver.

Sasha can be bought out at any time for … cash savings… but the Suns are hanging onto his contract at the moment in case they can get something for it. He’s not going to play for us.

Give Grant Hill Some Credit

Grant Hill had a quality year in 2008-09 showing skills, energy and leadership. He has been a class act and the Suns resigned him at a relatively low price. Is Grant part of a 10-year plan? I doubt it.
However, he has proven himself to be a valuable asset and a real force on both ends of the court. Grant will be a critical part of the Suns during 2009-10 season and – yes I am going to say it – beyond. Grant Hill may be gaining years but he has the skills and he klnows how to use them.
As for the center situation – ugh. Clearly the Suns are dealing with some fiscal issues and start from a relatively weak position because of bad management decisions made during the Kerr/ Sarver era. The most recent errors of the era (bringing in Shaq and letting Terry Porter anywhere near the coaching bench) are just the tip of the iceberg. But considering where the Suns were at a couple of months ago, Kerr & His Posse have made some real progress in the offseason.
I’m OK with saving money on Big Ben and Sasha if it goes towards a center because we need to do that. But who is out there at this juncture? Is Tyson Chandler still on the block?

by fedres on Jul 14, 2009 12:26 PM MDT reply actions   0 recs

But the Suns rebounders are more athletic than any of those guys on the western conference thay you named plus most likely they willl get a vetran center

by PhxSuns# on Jul 14, 2009 3:41 PM MDT reply actions   0 recs

Athlethic

While the Suns are more athletic, but they aren’t talented rebounders. Getting rebounds is more than just athlethics. It’s a type of mindset and fighting for position.

Ben Wallace, Dennis Rodman, and Barkley as good rebounders who are not necessarily because of their athletic ability.

Still killed

I still think we’re going to get killed on the boards especially after the only true center we have on the team had one great rebounding game followed by three terrible ones including one game where he had like 3 boards.
