Get Ariza NOW

According to ESPN, Trevor Ariza is now set on leaving the Lakers due to apparent bad blood, and is willing to accept the mid-level amount.

I think the Suns should move on this, and fast.  Here's why:

Star-divide

1. Youth - We could resign Hill and get someone like Dice or Smith.  But why?  If we are trying to get younger, why not sign Ariza? While I'm not a deluded Lakers fan who believes he's the next Scottie Pippen, I don't see any reason why he can't replicate what Shawn Marion did for this team in the Run and Gun offense.  I'm not even saying Ariza is as good as Marion in his prime, just that he's a great rebounder, defender, athletic finisher, and unlike Marion, doesn't need to be a #1 or 2 opttion.

2. Talent - I kind of already covered this, but I don't think Hill gives you a lot more than Ariza does anyway.  Don't get me wrong, I LOVE Grant Hill.  But he's billed as our "top defender" and honestly, Ariza is much better in that category.  Ariza may not have the shooting touch, but I think his speed makes up for it.  I would love to see him grabbing lobs from Nash.

3. Money - I know the Suns don't have a lot of it. But we did save a deal of it in the Shaq trade - around 3 million, if I'm right.  I believe the Mid-level exception is a bit shy of 6 million a year? Well, were' definitely gonna get another 3 from Ben Wallace - either from trading him for Chandler (which I've seen nets us  about 2.5 mill in savings) or even more in a buyout.  If it comes down to it, I'd even rather have Ariza than Chandler. I would also dump J-Rich basically to make this happen.

Is it possible? I think so.  If there is bad blood between Ariza and the Lakers, the Suns give him a great chance to stick to Kupchak and the boys in gold.  Honestly, I also think we're a better fit that some of the other teams going after him too.  Besides, look at this roster, and tell me it doesn't make you salivate:

Nash/Dragic

Richardson/Barbosa

 Ariza/Clark

Stoudemire/Amundson

Chandler/Lopez

Folks. we have here the best starting 5 since 2004, the first with a legit center, and a honest-to-goodness bench.  Hell, I'm not even sure Grant doesn't resign for the vet minimum if we can pull this off, because we would have as good of a chance as anyone in the west to take out the lakers

This apparent "bad blood" is just Ariza's agent blowing smoke

Somebody’s gonna overpay the dude, I’m just glad we don’t have the money to do it. He got his ring and he’s looking to get paid, we can’t give him the kind of contract he’s looking for.

by hcblankscreen on Jul 2, 2009 1:53 AM MDT reply actions

agreed

Ya his agent is definitely trying to pull a move. HC is correct though, someone is going to overpay him just to get him away from the Lakers. Probably Portland

One more thing, With all this assumption that we are going to get Tyson Chandler, when are we planning to pull the trigger on that? Because I feel like we only go after Chandler if we keep Amare. Or is it that only us fans realizing how much we need Tyson to cover up Amare deficiencies on defense and rebounding?

it doesn't work like that

You can’t “add” the money you gain from waiving Wallace to the MLE; since we’ll still be over the cap after we cut him, we can only offer the MLE, period.

Steve Nash, the league's MVP, is a longhaired Canadian who spoke out against the war in Iraq and reads The Communist Manifesto. Quentin Richardson declared after a game-winning shot that it "was like Hamlet. It was a suspense thriller, and I killed them at the end." Amare Stoudemire, when asked to comment on a 22-point third quarter against the Kings, said, "I've got a tendency to jump over some guys' heads and throw it down."

by rsavaj on Jul 2, 2009 7:05 AM MDT reply actions

Right

I don’t think there is any way we can afford Odom – what I meant to imply is that I doubt Sarver will go beyond next year’s payroll, so in order to spend the full MLE we would want to cut salary elsewhere, to keep us from getting to far from the luxury.

We don't need Ariza

Last thing we want to do is to compete with other teams to overpay OK guys.

With the cap not increasing, it’s a buyer’s market. We’re not one piece away from contending. Just wait till the money dries up and guys get desperate. I’m sure Matt Barnes wasn’t thinking “I’d be so glad if I could play for the Suns for the vet. min.” on the first day of free agency last year.

With the 14th pick of the 2009 NBA draft, the Pheonix Suns select... 3 million dollars!

Sure, sign Ariza but what about Grant?

If the Suns went after Ariza, they would surely have to use all of the 3mil or so they were courting Hill with (and then some), and they play the same position. So if they sign Ariza, it’s safe to say they will NOT be signing Grant. I’m OK with that, but I seriously doubt that Ariza isn’t going to sign with the Lakers – he’s from L.A., so they are his hometown team and they’re the champs. I think a team would have to seriously overspend to get him away from L.A. But who knows, this is the NBA, where amazing happens …

Damn not right to leave JDuds out like that

I think you forgot about Jared Dudley. He was tearing it up and the end of last season and the best hustle player on the floor. Show Duds respect

I'm sure I'll get yelled at for this.....

I would trade Barbosa for Ariza (S&T). Ariza is a starter on a Championship team and he is young. Barbosa is a great bench scorer, but is one dimensional. Barbosa homers can feel free to call me an idiot, but, this move would improve our team.

inept

The only reason we have not heard anything from the suns or will hear anything until we sign someone on the vets minimum is the fact that Kerr& Sarvar have not phoned Big Ben up and asked for his buyout or traded him for chandler.
You would have thought they would do it on first day of free agency or at least heard anything from the team about negotiating a buyout.

Loved to have Ariza but he wont sign for us even if we offered him more money there is more chance that the matrix will come back than we sign Ariza.

Most likely we get gHill (hopefully) and 2 guys on the vets minimum to take the squad to 13 players.

On a sad but terrifying note the mavs look like signing my man crush bu hu hu

Seems kind of expensive for a guy who scores less than 10 points a game…I don’t know much about him but I wasn’t impressed by his stat line. Playoffs were a bit better, but we have to get their before that’d matter.

Take care of the little things, and the big things will take care of themselves.

by SunDolphin on Jul 2, 2009 4:44 PM MDT reply actions

why odom

we just drafted clark who has a simliar skill set as odom granted he’s a rookie and will take time to polish his game. but i’d rather see us go after chandler and ariza. this team had a serious lack of toughtness last year, grant was probably our grittiest starter. ariza and chandler will brign enough toughness to compliment our more finess players like stat nash and barbosa. i think by acquiring these two guys we’re talking about competing again for the west

by maximus88 on Jul 2, 2009 5:18 PM MDT reply actions

ariza, chandler and richardson would be a pretty goo defensive team….WOW.

im gonna be all up on you like a spider monkey!

i forgo earl clark too, kids a beast

do whatever needs to be done to get richardson out of here. barbosa, nash, and richardson in the back court= losing. we need this;
 PG: nash, dragic
SG: hill/ariza, barbosa
SF: ariza/hill, dudley, clark
PF: STAT!, admundson
C: chandler, lopez
hopefully we can get another vet big man like rasheed or mcdyess. and hill or ariza could play shooting guard, especially next to steve nashty

Artest to Lakers, Ariza to Rockets

According to ESPN:

Artest will sign with Lakers, so they will not be signing Ariza. And …

Ariza has been courted by numerous teams, including Cleveland, and met Thursday in Las Vegas with Houston Rockets general manager Daryl Morey to possibly swap spots with Artest.

by Billy Hoyle on Jul 2, 2009 5:58 PM MDT reply actions

I guess ...

… this was the Lakers’ way of telling Ariza what he can do with his “bad blood.” I hope the Suns can pick up Ariza, that’d be great – a good upgrade over GHill and a better long-term solution at the 3.

Darn

Just read that the Houston Chronicle is reporting Ariza “accepted the Rockets’ offer of a five-year, mid-level exception deal late Thursday, expected to be worth roughly $33 million.”

That report is official

Ariza – Artest have been swapped.

firestevekerr.com

I blame steve kerr for thinking small. He’s piddling around trying to sign grant hill’s corpse while the lakers are making real moves.

by eagleheart on Jul 2, 2009 11:30 PM MDT reply actions

Ya Ariza would have been a nice pick up, i wouldn’t really consider grant a corpse, he was our most consistent player last year.

But I’m going to have to agree, I feel like Kerr doesn’t want to get his hands dirty. This is making me sick though all the teams around us are getting substantially better. Lakers and Spurs to be more specific, i know we aren’t Title contenders right now but id like to see something from our Management.

i would rather see...

our front office be safe, than try to gamble on a semi-aging player that could be on the downside of his career. we did that with shaq, and the whole situation (even though shaq somehow managed to resurrect his career) didn’t work out that well.

by Trevor Paxton on Jul 3, 2009 7:25 PM MDT up reply actions

You're delusional

baneagleheart.com

How does signing a guy like Artest, who’s on the downside of his career, help this team? What would be the point of giving him a multi-year deal that would marginally improve us now while hampering our future?

by hcblankscreen on Jul 3, 2009 2:28 AM MDT up reply actions

Annnnnnd Too Late...

The Rockets immediately picked him up the in almost the exact split second they lost Artest to the Fakers.

It’s been reported that the Suns are heavily eying Channing Frye though, That could be a very interesting match.

by wasting_death on Jul 3, 2009 8:21 AM MDT reply actions

Artest to the Lakers, Ariza to the Rockets, Jefferson to the Spurs, Carter to the Magic, Gortat and Quintin Ross to the Mavs

Meanwhile we’ve added…..oh wait, we’ve LOST Shaq and probably Grant Hill too.

WTF is Kerr doing.

Steve Nash, the league's MVP, is a longhaired Canadian who spoke out against the war in Iraq and reads The Communist Manifesto. Quentin Richardson declared after a game-winning shot that it "was like Hamlet. It was a suspense thriller, and I killed them at the end." by rsavaj on Jul 3, 2009 9:38 AM MDT reply actions

I'm a little frustrated

That the Rockets, Lakers, Cavs, Magic, and Pistons, are wheeling and dealing and we haven’t added anyone of significance to our team, even though we did dump Shaq and some things have been discussed.

Take care of the little things, and the big things will take care of themselves.

Crazy unrealated thought

I know this sounds absolutely crazy…and I mean really crazy, but what about getting Shawn back? I mean, it’s not exactly the smartest move in the world but it’s not the dumbest either. I realize there is some problems to be had but I think after these last couple years he might have gotten off his high-horse and learned his place after two brief stints with Miami and Toronto. It would be kind of stepping back and trying to relive the past, sure. Along with that we’d probably get a great deal of skepticism and/or hatred from basically everyone but I really wanna see what the Suns could do with their old big three back together. This is probably just an impossible fantasy fueled by love for my favorite player. But if for some astounding reason the stars aligned they sign Shawn and the then trade for Tyson Chandler, I’ll be over the moon

by Batmanthesunsfan on Jul 3, 2009 11:31 PM MDT reply actions

Seriously I would be over the moon if our line up was

Nash
JRich
Marion
Amare
Chandler

But as they say its so crazy it might work! But on the other hand you know in the NBA its all about the money, I mean look at what hedo just did, Backed out of a great young Portland team with nice pieces around him and a chance to work towards a chip, just to take a few extra million dollars in Toronto with a future that isn’t so bright.

Honestly I have always liked trix, and i wasn’t in the locker room to see how his emotions and pride made him feel the way he does. All i hear is reports and what i read in books and articles, but i think if he gets past the idea that he is never going to be the “MAN” on any team, but a very very very good piece to a good team, then he should just come back to the suns even if its for less money.
