Pelton’s article is interesting. He IMO correctly assumes we have at best a few average defenders and will have to run teams out of the building in order to win. However there are some oddities/incorrect assumptions, including Stoudemire goes back to Center, which I have heard no talk of-assuming Frye takes that spot, and that Earl Clark will possibly play a role in the team’s success this year. I’d love to see Clark step up, but he is 3rd on the depth chart as we speak.
Also of note was the Suns offensive prowess last year which was record setting, while the defensive ineptitude was nearly as impressive….I can’t believe the Mavs went 11-71 in 1992. Damn, what I wouldn’t give to watch Cuban suffer through that.

Clark
I agree he probably wont contribute immediately, and it will probably take him a long while to crack the rotation, but I think he could potentially be an important part of the team by the end of the year, eg. last month or two. Unfortunately, that means that Duds or Lou would have to fall out, and that would annoy me. I really do think that Clark will have to get time somewhere if we want to see him develop into the player he could be. (It’s like Rondo – plays with us, he would be under Nash until hell freezes over, and would not be the player he is now. Instead, he goes to a pathetic Celtics, gets thrown the reigns, then gets some of the greatest players in NBA history and is able to develop well, and is now a force. If he hadn’t had the playing time, I doubt he would be anywhere near stater quality now.)

Lou is fine for what he is
But Clark has the potential to be something special. As much as I enjoy watching Lou play, I think Clark, has the ability to better both offensively and defensively. He’s potentially more versatile and I’m hoping that both can flourish. But if I had to choose, I’d rather have Clark….
That being said, I’m glad we have both for the time being.

I see Clark being mainly a defensive stopper with a few 18-20 foot shots, some garbage points, and decent rebounding. I agree that he has far more upside, but I think Lou’s atheleticism and energy should always have a place in the rotation

Maybe, but not necessarily. Your second unit could consist of Clark Duds and Lou. Remember, we’re not playing D here, we’re running and gunning. From what I’ve heard, Clark can handle a 4 and you could slide Lou to the 5-yes totally undersized all the way around, but even our first unit (if Frye starts) is undersized drom the standpoint that we don’t have a traditional Shaq-esque center. In fact I would tend to believe that if anyone falls out this season, it’s Lopez.
like Rondo – plays with us, he would be under Nash until hell freezes over, and would not be the player he is now
It would be interesting to see if we would have extended Nash if Rondo was on the squad. True he may not have been given the court time to develop, but regardless, the kid can play. What would you think of the Suns with Rondo instead of Nash right now? I think we lose a lot of Nash intangibles. I think Rondo, while being highly talented, still cannot compare to Nash in the realm of running an offense. That comes with experience as well as not being an egotistical prick, which Rondo is right now.

I agree on your assesment of Rondo
I just don’t see him being the same player having developed here. He probably wouldn’t have as good defense considering he would have been playing in 7SOL instead of with KG and a great defensive team. He probably would not have had the time or impetus to develop the still relatively mediocre shot that he has now. He might be better at leading a Nash style offense. The fact of the matter is he would be different and based on our reliance on Nash, I still think Nash would have been extended and we would have a more capable backup. On a side note, I despise the attitude with which Rondo plays the game as well, and despite his undeniable skill, he is one of my least favorite players in the league. I would almost go as far as to say I am glad how it worked out. Rondo is good enough that it is almost.
This is rather tangential, as I was merely trying to extol the virtues (I think) of getting young players playing time in which to develop. It is great to be around NBA players, practice with NBA players, even be great friends with NBA players, but there is no substitute to playing in an NBA game. It is the real way people are able to get feedback, and develop. Of course, there is always the danger of pushing a player too far too fast, which is why I promote gradually fazing in a player such as Clark. Last year with Porter, Dragic did not get playing time, and when he managed to get out there and made a mistake, he was yanked every time. This didn’t help him adjust to the game, or get over his mental frailty. When Gentry got the job (and this is why I like him) he put his trust in the second unit, and let them play. Later half of the season, they played much better and became an integral part of the team.
I also like the potential of going small with a lineup like you said. In fact, I really like the potential versatility of having Clark. You could go small, with Clark at the 4 and Lou or Amare or someone at the 5, or you could even go big, with Clark at the 3 or the 4, pairing with Lou or Duds as forwards and having Lopez at the 5. I would agree that Lopez would be the one to drop out of the rotation, as he could probably use another year to develop before being a consistent big minute player.
I never though I would say it, but we just do not have enough playing time to give to our many potential rotation players. Tucker could be in there, he has decent potential and could contribute, whatever forward is the one left out by the musical chairs will still be a player we want to play. I really only see Griffin being a true garbage time player (if he gets the 13th spot, which I think he will).
I like your quote thingumy.

Is it just me, or does this team look a lot like the 2004-2005 team ?

I like this Ball Don’t Lie article which talks about the extension and while the Suns aren’t tops anymore, it should still be a fun season to watch.
