Jerry:
-Would have signed Nash to the extension
-Would not have immediately extended Amare for max money yet.
Perhaps Kerr and Co. are doing things right. The godfather acknowledged the Nash signing was rolling the dice, yet necessary.
I think I may be a bit smarter after listening to Jerry Colangelo. I never thought I’d ever say that.
i like how he doesn't want amaré back.
for team USA.
“If somebody wants to be part of it, they have to demonstrate it, they have to take some initiatives, [and] they have to be willing to pay the price.
because we all know that amaré probably won’t be doing that.
disregard this one. haha.
hit post too early on accident.

i like how jerry doesn't want amaré back.
for team USA. he said, in response to a question of whether or not amaré would be a part of the next olympic team:
"That’s a hard one to call. I’ll be honest with you, we have enough players who want to be part of this. There’s no selling job that needs to be done on any player. So, if somebody wants to be part of it, they have to demonstrate it, they have to take some initiatives, they have to be willing to pay the price."
because we all know that amaré probably won’t be doing that.
As long as Amare is still on the Suns I’d rather he not play on the team. Less miles, the better. In fact if I was Kerr I’d require Amare to wear a football helmet and be pushed around in a wheelchair when off the court.

Mainly, Amare had his spot, snubbed it in the hopes of avoiding injury and getting a rich contract.
Loyalty to himself, ironically, didn’t pay off this time.
Who are these guys again?
Colangelo and Amare
Everyone stop hating! If we recall, Amare was on the team. Then the following season had the knee issues and surgery. So I can’t say I was surprised that he chose not to participate last year and let his body rest and heal going into the season. And like someone else mentioned, I was actually glad he didn’t as it meant a healthier Amare for the NBA season. Many other athletes have chosen to take time off and not play in the World’s or Olympics when they were coming off injuries. Ginobli played, and look what it did to him and the Spurs after he got hurt.
Finally, I wish everyone would stop ripping Amare for “not playing defense”. The kid came to the Suns out of high school and he developed exactly the type of game that D’Antoni and the Suns wanted back then. The Suns didn’t play team defense and didn’t foul….on purpose…because it slowed the game down. I’m not saying that he doesn’t need to work on some things. But everyone wants Amare to be KG….there’s only one KG and there are a lot of power forwards in the league that can’t be KG. But they do what they do well as does Amare. The Suns problems on defense aren’t just about Amare…it’s TEAM defense and TEAM rebounding that’s the issue. So we need guards that can lock down on the Kobe’s and Tony Parker’s of the league and that can rotate rather than give up open 3’s, a center that can play pick and role defense, and at least one “big” on the floor that will go after every rebound that he can, and that doesn’t have to be Amare.
Great points
and if Amare didn’t insist that he was worth a max contract then I would have less of an issue with his D and rebounding.
Also, we’ve seen that he can do those thing when properly motivated. I don’t except him to ever be KG or TD but he can be at least average and work hard on both ends. I know he can do that because he has done it.
Expecting him to do what he’s done before is different then expecting him to be something he’s not. Certainly when we are talking about giving him a huge contract that represents a huge potential risk to the entire franchise.

That is exactly the reason...
I think he should have played (or at least attempted to play for Team USA during the Olympics last summer. You saw what playing with Kobe and seeing his work ethic/determination on both ends did for the likes of LBJ, Wade and most of all (probably the most important, too when comparing to Amare) Carmelo Anthony. All of them came back this year dead set on becoming complete players and Melo made the biggest jump proving in the playoffs that he is one of the best when he ASKED to guard Kobe. I watched the Suns play the Wolves this year and Amare was more than happy to let Lou guard Big Al while he covered Craig Smith. I really think he would benefit from playing with Kobe (and now LBJ, Melo and Wade, too). However, I think he has chosen not to participate and that’s fine. I still have hope that he will find his way and realize that if he wants to be the great player he envisions, he is going to have to become a relentless workier on both ends of the floor. I believe he can given the work he’s put into becoming one of the best offensive players in the game – defense is the next step.
PS, no better time than a contract year to make that leap – Sun Tzu!
good point
about Melo

hindsight
is 20/20. i dont remember any of us being unhappy with amares decision last summer. as i recall, we all felt like it was the right thing for him to rest his body and focus on winning us a championship. perhaps we shouldve been careful what we wished for
