Discussing Matt Barnes with the Magic faithful
It seems in the comments that Magic fans aren't happy with my assessment of Matt Barnes.
What do you think?

I think they'll find out soon enough.
The way he played last season is pretty much a summary of his whole career. You can’t teach an old dog new tricks.
"Fun fact: Larry Hughes, who couldn’t stay healthy if all his human parts were replaced with bionic implants, is out for the next four weeks with a bruised leg. Do you think that Willis Reed ever reads about all these players missing time with bruises and sprained fingers and throws up in his mouth a little?"
I believe your review was spot on
When we signed Barnes I had such high hopes….
Over the season, which was marked by outside turmoil, Barnes was wholly inconsistent. It was this inconsistency that was infuriating. You described effectively that he was used out of position late in the year, but even then, he just couldn’t find any rhythm
And if you can’t find rhythm in a wide-open system, then I’m not sure how he’ll succeed in Orlando
Barnes
is not only wildly inconsistent, but his best play is usually when it doesn’t matter, and he is the anti-Raja Bell as far as clutch play. I laughed when the wire copy said he was coming off his best season. Yeah, if all you see are box scores. Roland catches a glimpse of this. His rating is worse than Boris. Remember how Boris always had the worst on-court effect? Barnes is worse. Orland has to be kicking themselves for trading Ariza to the Lakers. He is now Houston’s best player. So they have Matt Barnes. Whoop-tee-doo.

are the rockets gonna be that bad? can we take them next year?

Don't worry about the comments.
There’s a reason why I approached you to talk about Barnes, because I knew you would cut to the nitty gritty.
Matt brings the good/bad, as does every player. I think some of the things you highlighted as “problems” shouldn’t be issues when he plays with the Magic, due to how the leadership/team structure is setup.
In any case, thanks for chiming in with your thoughts. Always good to have an outside perspective.

Leadership
So Nash, Hill, and Shaq are inferior leaders?

I never said that.

But I agree with Stan’s assessment. I see Barnes more in line with Maurice Evans whom the Magic had earlier. It would be a mistake to think he will replace what Hedo did for them. He just adds depth. That’s mainly the job of Rashard Lewis, aided by Carter and Pietrus and Nelson handling the ball more again.
Why invite you over
if they are going to ignore everything said and call it sour grapes. Stan is one of the most consistently truthful and informed sports writers I read, especially in blogs.
Barnes is okay, he has bags of skill, but so far cannot coexist with any discernible coaching scheme or team system. He is one of Don Nelson’s players through and through.
No worries mate
we all get hopeful about our new players and we certainly were pretty darn high on Barnes when he came here just as we are with Frye now despite his not being able to contribute anything meaningful in his career so far.
And hey, perhaps SVG will be able to get more out of Barnes then Phx or GSW could. He’s a good guy and he plays hard. I wish him all the best.

I would like to exclude
myself from the “we” that has hopes for Frye.
See my sig.
Don't feel bad, Channing. We can't rebound either.
One person spoke against what PhoenixStan said using that terminology. Not everyone.

BTW, I invited him over because I value his opinion.
No one is ignoring what he said. They’re having a discussion and stating their ideas as counterpoints.

well, I don't know
Granted Matt Barnes was turnover prone, and often took poor shots. But I still think that the Suns should have resigned him.
Someone who averages 10 ppg is a solid pickup for any team. He had a great arm for throwing outlet passes (albeit sometimes they were picked off of rattled out of bounds). He plays tough and is a decent rebounder and weak side shot blocker.
I’ve mentioned before that Gentry told Barnes in the exit interview that he has “always wanted to coach a player like him”. While some of you may chalk that up to just being polite, you can’t assume Gentry was lying. I think he saw the overall good Barnes brought to the team.
And Hawk 42, how can you say he was the ‘anti Raja Bell’ in terms of clutch play. As far as I can recollect, Barnes knocked down the game winning 3 against OKC. Give him a break.
and...
That 10 ppg came with the veteran’s minimum contract of 1.2 million. 500,000 of which was covered by a league fund. So, honestly, for 700,000 give Matt Barnes a break!!!!!!
What more did you expect on a minimum contract?
consistency
is the key, in my opinion. when (if) the playoffs come around, id rather have a guy with slightly lower averages that you can count on than a loose cannon who does a good job 50% of the time. thats seriously what barnes was for us last season: a heads-or-tails tossup every night. there was no middle ground, so thats why his averages were misleading..
That's the kind of player Barnes is and the Magic fans understand that
Otis Smith signed him because as a minimum player his ups are far greater than his downs. A do everything utility player is something any team needs especially if injuries occur.
The fans confidence in Barnes isn’t necessarily in him but our coach. SVG has a very defined system already in place which has proven to be successful. Lets face it last year PHX struggled to find their identity which left Barnes having to play 2 completely different positions.
What we need from him with the Magic will be more structured and hopefully that will let Barnes find a rhythm throughout the season

I hope you're right
Matt just strikes me as the type who wants to do things his way. SVG isn’t exactly known for bending to the will of his players. Something’s got to give.
But it is a fairly low risk deal for the Magic and besides, this way he doesn’t go to Boston where he would have been a better fit playing behind Pierce.

so i guess I was the only one sorry to see him go then...
i think we’re gonna miss some of what he brought last year
