If you owned the Suns...would you really extend STAT?

If I owned the Phoenix Suns, I wouldn't have made many of the moves that Sarver did over the last few years (starting with not extending Joe Johnson). But, I agree with Sarver about Amare. I wouldn't give him a max contract . With his injuries to his knees and eye, it wouldn't make sense. I'd offer him $14-15 mil a year. If that wasn't acceptable, I'd be in rebuilding mode b/c he's the only player on the roster you might build around right now.

Without a commitment from Amare (at the right $), I'd trade Nash immediately (for youth and picks), I'd try to do the same w/Amare and w/Richardson. I certainly wouldn't extend any offers to older or potentially injured players (such as Hill, Chandler, etc).

EIther you have a team built around Amare or you trade as many of the big salaries and older playes away and stock picks.

On the other hand, if he were to sign at the right price, I'd try to bring in Chandler (for Wallace's contract) and extend Nash for 3 years (at the $8 million that Kidd was offered). One could argue that they wouldn't accept these contracts...if that's the case, trade them or let them walk...

That pretty much sums it up

as far as I am concerned as well

Agreed

Amare ain’t worth the max. He’s worth a good chunk but he ain’t in Kobe or Lebron’s class

by eagleheart on Jul 4, 2009 11:25 AM MDT reply actions   0 recs

but the max is the only way to keep him… i’d offer him the max, but with team options and games played requirements to reach that max. though he isn’t a Lebron or Kobe, Amare is still a true consecutive all-star caliber player and there probably aren’t 20 of those guys in the NBA that are still young enough to build a playoff team around.

And what happens....

What if Amare’s knees give out or his eye issues affect his jump shot too much. Basically, what happens if Amare’s injuries make him not as good a player (examples would be Penny H., Grant Hill, etc). We’d have $20+ million tied up in his salary yearly and nothing we could do for 4 or 5 years.

I wouldn’t do it. Would you really give someone that’s an unsure thing (b/c of injuries) $20 million of your money every year?

Milsap

I’d rather pay Milsap or David Lee 9 mil a year than 17 to Amare. There are other guys out there.

Besides when was the last time a powerforward led his team to the title? One could say Garnett sure, but he was like the 3rd option behind Pierce and Ray Allen (possibly Rondo too). He led the team through Defense and intensity, two words that don’t describe Amare.

I would definately re-sign amare he was in the top 15 in scoring last yr and out of all the players amare was the only one to take under 15 shots a game. phx was also the only team to have 4 people on the top 50 scoring list..injured yes but he can ball. he missed no games from the knee injury and he came back and was a first team all nba center two yrs ago and this yr was an all star starter..take away shaq and run with amare and lets see how far we go..i watched the suns all yr and we were much more fun to watch with amare dunking on people..people need to quit forgetting how good he is

amare is a lebron or kobe of big men..whos better than him..not bosh..you cant even go to dwight howard..we saw that in the finals..boozer gets owned by amare everytime..I like Dirks game but I’d take amare over him

by Lebrontophx2010 on Jul 4, 2009 12:49 PM MDT reply actions   0 recs

I agree that Amare is a very good player…but you can’t compare his game to that of Lebron or Kobe. At this stage in Amare’s career (being injury prone and lacking good defense), I’d prefer Bosh….and I’d build a team around Bosh. That would be a good trade for us (Amare for Bosh).

Max Contract for stat

I think it’s one of those things where Amar’e may not totally deserve a 17mil type max contract, but you sign him to that in order for another team to not pick him up (like what Orlando did with Rasard’s like $110 mil contract).

The thing I like most about Amar’e is how accurately he shoots the ball. Every night the tean the Suns were playing would KNOW that Amar’e was a beast, and KNOW he was going to get the ball. Yet he still shot 54% from the field. Top that off with his ridiculous 83% free throw shooting, and I say there’s no one out there as good as him at the 4.

There are certainly doubts about his knee, eye, defensive intensity, but at the point at which he’s still young, and easily an All-Star player, why not sign him to the max?

Just getting someone like Milsap or David Lee isn’t even close to what STAT brings to the team. the pick and roll with him and Nash is nearly unstoppable.

Agreed, Willie

Amare is a young Connie Hawkins without the Swoop, but he shoots better. The Hawk’s first season with the Suns, he averaged 25 points and 8 rebounds. Of course we got him on the way down. I keep waiting for Amare do develop a signature move other than the power dunk, but now that Shaq is out of the way, he is the closest thing the Suns have to a sure score. You don’t let that guy go, or trade him for parts. Dumb, Dumb, Dumb. Build around him. The Suns had a similar team in 1972, but Colangelo had to go meddling, and lost Paul Silas in pursuit of Charlie Scott. We need a Paul Silas type to play the other forward. In actually think Amare would be devastating in a double power forward set, where he is actually the small forward on offense.

Unfortunately, a Paul Silas is unavailable. Except as a coach, which was my choice when they dicked around and hired Porter.

I feel we are a wise coach away from a very exciting team. I don’t think Gentry is the guy.

Gentry and Amare

Hawk42, I agree that Amare is the only player we’d build around on the team today. But that doesn’t mean he’s worth a max contract or that he’s untouchable. There are issues; lack of defense, injury prone, conflict w/other players such as Nash and Marion. Remember when we traded for Penny Hardaway and he couldn’t play (although we were paying him about $20 mil a year). We don’t need to repeat that (if Amare got injured again).

BTW, I 100% disagree about your Gentry comments. He’s exactly what Kerr said he was looking for when he hired Porter. He wanted us to keep the potent attack oriented offense while adding some defense and development for the younger players….that’s exactly what Gentry did in a half season. I actually watched some of the games in the 2nd half of the season b/c of him.

If I owned the team, it would be ruined in a month at best.

My not so expert opinion though, is that they should try and work out a reasonable extension that’s performance based. Give incentives if he improves his rebounding, defense, etc. I don’t know if that’s a possibility or not, but it might be worth a shot.

it wouldnt

athletes are all about the guaranteed money, he’d decline the offer and sign with a new team next year for more. i say let him go and sign someone who deserves a max deal

by cap space on Jul 5, 2009 1:33 PM MDT up reply actions   0 recs

What PF/C in the league that the Suns could reasonably sign deserves a max deal? Signing players isn’t as simple as saying “Ooooh, I love Dwight Howard! Let’s get him!”.

Because if the PF/C is ALREADY signed with a team at a max contract, the suns could only trade for them. And there aren’t too many Max’d out players who are on the trading block.

STAT is great. Not perfect, but the Suns don’t have some other great option to sign a big man.
Amar’e combination of FG%, FT%, Pick and Roll Offense, and Weak Side Defense are good enough for a max deal in the league.
Bosh can’t shoot nearly as well as Amar’e, Dwight is obviously stuck in Orlando, KG is too old to build around, Dirk is too old as well. TD is starting to be washed up.

STAT is inclined to stay in PHX (since he’s been here his whole career), and it would be tough and very risky to let him go with the assumption that we could nab another star in free agency.

So who else!?

by willthehawk on Jul 5, 2009 3:16 PM MDT reply actions   0 recs

How about a trade w/Utah

We could do a trade for Boozer (as long as he worked out a long term deal in advance at the right amount of money). If we get him for $6 Mil cheaper than Amare….that would be a good deal. His #’s are solid.

by Sc413 on Jul 5, 2009 11:16 PM MDT up reply actions   0 recs

Somewhat agree.

I would talk to Stoudemire and warn him that he’s fading almost as quick as Allen Iverson. Then I would let him know that my intentions would be to build a championship team. Look these guys are idiots they traded Marion for Shaq when they could have just as easily kept JJohnson, or even picked up a great piece in the free agent market. How about all those dead draft picks that could have been had, most of the great draft picks have come from Phoenix picked by another team. The problem is and will always be the management group!

You'd hope...

That Amare really wants to be on a championship team…that’s what he says. But then he turns around and starts talking about a max deal again. I would be he could say “Trade for Chandler” and I’ll accept $15 mil a year for the next 5 years. But will he? Prob not.

by Sc413 on Jul 12, 2009 12:12 AM MDT up reply actions   0 recs

3rd sentence should have read…It would be nice if he said “Trade for Chandler” and…

No

no Max deal if I owned the team. Time to move on Amare.

+1

Steve Nash, the league's MVP, is a longhaired Canadian who spoke out against the war in Iraq and reads The Communist Manifesto. Quentin Richardson declared after a game-winning shot that it "was like Hamlet. It was a suspense thriller, and I killed them at the end." Amare Stoudemire, when asked to comment on a 22-point third quarter against the Kings, said, "I've got a tendency to jump over some guys' heads and throw it down."

I look at it like Christiano Ronaldo and Man U.

You either keep a DOMINANT player who will cost a lot, or you take a 80 million pound boost to your coffers and sign a bunch of probably lesser players. There comes a point/price where a player is just not worth it, no matter how good.
And lets face it, Amare is not the basketball worlds C. Ronaldo.

by egp the great on Jul 5, 2009 9:12 PM MDT reply actions   0 recs

I agree

$15 mill would be a workable deal for both sides…

by Sc413 on Jul 12, 2009 12:18 AM MDT up reply actions   0 recs

If I owned the Suns....

D’antoni would still be the coach, our starting five is Nash, Bell, Marion, Stat and Diaw, and we would have kept one of those draft picks and probably have Rondo as a back-up point guard for Nash. And even if I pull the trigger on the Marion/Shaq trade, I keep D’antoni, Bell and Diaw, and we’re right there for ’09.

The problem isn’t Amare’s defense or injuries. The issue is Sarver and Kerr had a panic attack and dismantled a team that was on the verge of greatness.

So yes I’d extend Amare. With Hill and Nash coming back, and with Frye, we’re a shooting guard away from having a good combination of experience, youth and athleticism that can challenge LA in the west.

And one last thing. I have no idea why everyone keeps talking about Tyson Chandler. He was decent at best before the injury. And some appear to want to ship Amare out and bring him in. If we do that, we’re in the lottery for a lot longer.

by FunInTheSun on Jul 12, 2009 3:13 PM MDT reply actions   0 recs

Actually...

I believe people are talking about shipping our expiring contracts to pick up Chandler so he could play with Amare. As long as he’s healthy, that would make the team better. I agree with a lot of your other points…even with resigning Amare….just not at a max deal.
