J-Rich for AK-47

According to the ESPN NBA trade machine, a trade for Andrei Kirilenko and Jason Richardson would help the Suns block shots and play defense. Since management is probably not going to try to sign Marion for the MLE, this trade would help us tremendously defensively, and with our awesome training staff maybe AK-47 can play at an all star level again. All I know is that I traded J-Rich on NBA Live 09 and won a championship due to AK's great defense. Ok so thats a video game, lol but its just a thought. Another thought trade Richardson away for an injured Mcgrady whose hefty contract is set to expire next year anyway as it is. This will give us salary cap space to be players in the "draft class of 2010" I would suggest doing this trade only if we are able to get our unconditional 1st round draft pick back, that way if Mcgrady is out until February anyways, we will still benefit from having a bad season. On the upside, if our athletic trainers can work their magic on Mcgrady and somehow rehabilitate his health like they have been able to do with Amare, Shaq, and Hill, then maybe he might be able to contribute something after all!

Poll
Should the Suns trade Jason Richardson for Andrei Kirilenko?
Yes, Kirilenko would provide the defense and hustle this team needs.

No, Jason Richardson is so great offensively that we cant afford to part with him.

YES!

A trade the jazz would say yes to and AK47 would absolutely FLOURISH in an uptempo system that allows him to play the 4!

T MAC

would be an impossible trade to make. hes being paid 20 million while rich only makes 12. i like the idea and think it would be a great trade if the salaries match but they dont. we would have to send jrich and barbosa or make a blockbuster trade involving 6 key players.

but just for the heck of it
suns get=TMAC, LUIS SCOLA, KYLE LOWRY AND AARON BROOKS and a 1st round pick
each of those players expire after this season

rockers get=AMARE AND JRICH
to replace yao ming

MAN I HOPE THIS HAPPENS

LOL

You can say a lot of things about Kerr, but he certainly has “kahones”!

But...

Who would be our starting Shooting Guard? (Do not say Barbosa)

They're trying to take my tortillas!

by N-Temp on Jul 5, 2009 11:41 PM MST reply actions

Why not Barbosa?

He is a very, very good player in this league. Last year he had a career high 19.4 PER. Not to mention averaged over 20 point 4.5 rebounds, and 4.4 assist in the 11 games he started.

his stats are Superior to J-rich if you take in the fact that he averaged only 24.4 minutes per game and J-rich averaged 33.5.

Barbosa also noticeably improved on defense over the course of the season. Something I CANNOT say about J-rich

by dontTradeAaronNelson! on Jul 6, 2009 12:28 AM MST up reply actions

He’s small. Even with his improvements, he was still not good, and that was mostly defending smaller point guards.
If he starts, we’ll be seeing more 50pt performances from Brandon Roy, Joe Johnson, etc.
With the trade of J-Rich, the Suns should sign a free agent to a small-ish deal like Anthony Parker for 3 yrs max. He’s almost Grant Hill-old, but productive – for now.

Personally,

I feel like the increase provided by Kirilenko offsets any dropoff associated with moving Barbosa to the starting 2.

by Azreous on Jul 6, 2009 10:31 AM MST up reply actions

He is a 6th Man...

And that role fits him perfectly. No reason to change that. Barbosa is good and has played well, but that doesn’t necessarily warrant a permanent move into the starting lineup. And despite those numbers, he is not as good as J-Rich.

Man where do I start.... Well sense our eyes disagree Ill use numbers.

Once again if you take into minutes playied barbosa is very noticibly better in almost every catagory. PER measures Offense stats and a little bit of defense ( Blocks, steals, rebounds).

Jrich- 16.7
Barbosa- 19.4

Barbosa has an astonishing 26.2 PER as a shooting guard and kept opponent sg to a meager 13.8 PER.
Against J-rich SG had an 18.5 PER and Small forwards had 20.1( when he played small forward)

I know PER isnt the end all say all but the on/off stats reflect this.

When J-rich was on the court the opponents scored 5.6 more points per 100 possessions.

Shooting guards torched us when J-rich was in the game as a SG. And Small forwards torched us when J-rich was at Small forward. Coincidence?

Numbers Can Be Misleading

PER is a useful tool, but it can deceive, as it can be inflated in many ways. I mean, we’ve had Richardson half a season compared to LB who has been here the entire season and the 5 before that. This basically means the PER formula may not be the best tool to use at this point. LB benefits more from his teammates (such as Nash) because he’s been there longer and has had much more time to develop team chemistry. And yes, the point about their respective defensive abilities is a coincidence. In truth, Richardson is bigger and has longer reach, making him better equipped to defend than LB. And I have no idea where the notion that LB is even a good defender in the first place began, but that should be put to rest. Really, he is no better defensively than Richardson, so it’s pretty much a moot point.

yes if this trade somehow sprung to life

this would be the lineup if tmac is healthy cuz our med staff is brilliant
pg. NASH,lowry, brooks, dragic
sg. barbosa, tucker
sf. tmac, dudley
pf. scola, amundson, clark
c. chandler, robin
big ben for chandler obviously
point guard overload, something that we need for the future, good competition brings out the best
and that leaves us with a good young core once tmac and nash leave

by cap space on Jul 6, 2009 1:53 AM MST up reply actions

microfracture

Didn’t TMac have off-season MF surgery on his knee and isn’t expected to be able to play until February at the earliest?

by Billy Hoyle on Jul 6, 2009 9:33 AM MST up reply actions

Yes he did, but if somehow we can manage to get that unprotected 1st rounder back, even if we tank one season, we could still benefit by getting a good draft pick! Then the next year we can just dump Tmac’s contract or if the medical staff works their wonders maybe we can sign him the next year for not much money. I understand that Tmac is old and his back hurts etc, but if we are going to tank a season and benefit from this trade, then this trade should only be made if we can get a first round draft pick. Remember when “starbury” was traded to the Knicks for Mcdyess and how much people complained about that? We had a horrible season that year but then what happened? We rose like a Phoenix in Phoenix, lol (that was under the Colangelo’s) but its possible to land a good free agent when you have money to throw around (which is exactly what we did when we landed Nash), however you have to put yourself in that position and right now our team has been trying to keep the “core” together so long that we have mortgaged our future. That future starts with next years draft and if we don’t have a first round draft pick for next year, and no Amare or Nash, we might have a wasteland of a team that nobody wants to play for.

Barbosa is going to get better..............

It’s time for barbosa to start. That guy could put up huge numbers getting starting minutes. His defense is getting better….He led the team last season in steals per minute and he can take over games offensively at times. He really never has been given a chance.

by cabezonication on Jul 6, 2009 1:16 AM MST reply actions

trade jrich for AK

We really need someone to start at sf. AK could be perfect and barbsoa would be the starting sg. He would be a starter in more than half of the leagues teams. Why not the suns?

by raulgabriel9999 on Jul 6, 2009 4:03 AM MST reply actions

Barbosa Defense

I can see Barbosa getting a lot of steals, he has quick hands, if a guy tries to drive by him, he can get in there and knock it away. If someone posts him up, he’s a bit short but really, you can’t run the whole game just posting up one guy and expect to win. Also, he’ll have Robin Lopez or someone behind him

by eagleheart on Jul 6, 2009 5:29 AM MST reply actions

no way utah goes for that.

richardson wouldn’t fit in well with a system like sloan’s. plus, in that system, he’d be reduced to more of a spot up shooter than anything, since williams will be running the point, brewer is more of a slasher/midrange shooter, and you’ve still got okur and boozer around.

also, on another note, the t-mac trade suggestions need to die. i don’t want him on the suns, even if it’s just for a year. heck, if we wanted cap space for 2010, we could just let amaré and nash’s contracts expire.

roster (after AK47 trade):

PG: nash, dragic
SG: barbosa, tucker
SF: hill (hopefully), dudley, clark
PF: AK47, amundson
C: amaré, lopez

obviously, you’d be able to play a few guys out of position (dudley or clark at the 4, tucker at the 3, etc.), but i think that’s what our roster would look like.

by Trevor Paxton on Jul 6, 2009 11:00 AM MST reply actions

I think utah would do it..

They save 3 million a year by doing the trade( thats more money to keep milsap.) They also get a starter and give up a bench player (who is best at playing the 4 but has to play the 3 because of boozer and milsap.) They need a three point shooter at the 2 spot anyway.

by dontTradeAaronNelson! on Jul 6, 2009 12:07 PM MST reply actions

Sorry

But UTah wants a player who can create his own shot, J Rich is not that player anymore

by dubzfan on Jul 6, 2009 3:38 PM MST reply actions

Utah would never do it

AK-47 would work out great on the Suns, but it ain’t happening. Jazz don’t want/need JRich
