Marion back to Phoenix - Open Thread

Sports 620 KTAR's John Gambodoro is reporting today that the Suns are interested in bringing Shawn Marion back to Phoenix for something near the MLE ($5m/yr).

With Grant Hill exploring his options, the thought of Marion back in town is almost too good to be true. I've always been a huge fan of the Trix. You can say a LOT of bad things about Marion (mostly that his ego got the better of him) but on the court NO ONE played harder each and every game. And while Grant is a fantastic guy and played great, if you have to choose between a 31 year old Marion who can defend 4 positions and run the floor and finish with the best of them then it is no contest.

I am a bit surprised that the Suns would consider it, but very happy to hear that is the case.

Stay tuned, Suns fans! The Matrix could be back in town!

Amare and Marion both said they never had problems with each other..I think Marions problems were with the front office for not giving him the max contract he thought he deserved

LOVING IT!

Chandler, Amare, Marion, JRich and Nash in the starting lineup…I’ve got chills!

I do think Amare and Marion can coexist because I think Marion realizes how much higher his stock is when he’s playing with Nash and Amare – I mean, he’s got to be humbled by what’s happened to him the last couple of seasons, right? As for Amare…well, Amare is Amare.

I'm tearing up right now

I was hoping he would come back
He’s been my favorite player since his rookie season

Voice for the Opposition

I do not like this. I do not like a 31 year old who trades on athleticism, who chafed at playing 3rd banana to 2 obviously better players, and doesn’t have a handle. And did I mention he’s a 31 year-old who trades on athleticism?

I know not all players over 30 decline and suck, but Marion’s game is predicated on being the most physically gifted player on the court, but I’m inclined to invoke some kind of Logan’s Run (plus 9) policy in the name of a long-term rebuild.

by Mike Lisboa on Jul 6, 2009 3:03 PM MDT reply actions

Thank you, Mike

I am against it not only for that, but for his past attitude problems. I’m sick of egos and that’s why I lost my enthusiasm with Nash and soured on Stat. If you are the best, you are allowed ego, to a certain extent, but let’s face it, Marion’s ego was much higher than his success warrented. I don’t think this should be the direction we go in, and if this is what is going to happen I’m going to very much regret the Shaq trade. I’d much rather have built around him then put together a lesser version of something that didn’t work 4 years ago.

Take care of the little things, and the big things will take care of themselves.

Agreed-No Thank You

Yes it sounded nice for about 5 seconds before I realized…It’s just like getting back together with your ex-girlfriend. She may still be kind of cute, but she’s got more miles on her than before, and the reason you broke up was a good one-and believe me, nothing’s changed.

I think Marion is a ring of honor candidate certainly, but his best days are behind him. He cannot handle being a role player and he certainly didn’t get along with Stoudamire.

Of course maybe if he ate his humble pie I would consider signing him on the cheap, (not 5 mil) but let’s face it, why would he sign for a league minimum with the Suns.

by RD74 on Jul 6, 2009 4:07 PM MDT up reply actions

Seven Seconds or Less

Read that book by Jack MacCallum. I admit it wasn’t a whole season picture but he pointed out what everyone experienced. Numerous times in that book he mentions Marion’s depression. It’s in my opinion a risky and useless move to bring him back. He didn’t like it here being the third option, so why put him in a situation he wasn’t happy in.

by Willman on Jul 6, 2009 4:12 PM MDT up reply actions

Here's the thing

unlike some other players, Marion NEVER let all that impact his play on the court. Never.

Sure, at 31 he’s not the same player he was but at $5m he’s a good pick up. A GREAT pick up.

His problem before was that he thought he should be more of the focal point of the offense and he thought that he deserved a max contract. Given some of the guys that got paid max deals in the few years before Marion (Stevie Franchise, Marbury, even Rashard Lewis) then I guess you can see his point. Sort of.

The Suns were right not to pay him and to let him go out and explore the market. He clearly isn’t going to make much more then the MLE anywhere so perhaps he comes back humbled with all that nonsense behind him.

He’s gone out into the world and seen how cruel it is and now perhaps he’s ready to come home again.

For 2yrs and $5m/yr – I am ALL for it

by Seth Pollack on Jul 6, 2009 4:19 PM MDT up reply actions

Agreed….marion at that price……do it.

by cabezonication on Jul 6, 2009 4:21 PM MDT up reply actions

phoenix stan

i couldnt agree more..I think marion did get humbled and he can defend 4 positions and him with Chandler improves phx a whole lot defensively and he can still score you have for legit scoring threats and a candidate for Defensive Player of the YR if Chandler can stay healthy..If we pick up those two and get Channing Frye and Gerald Green(will be great in our sytem) with our bench we can still be good..we dont have a 1st round pick so why not re build after this yr when we have a first round pick and the best free agents are out..

by Lebrontophx2010 on Jul 6, 2009 4:28 PM MDT up reply actions

Besides…What else is out there….I haven’t heard any rumors of other free agents interested in playing for us.

by cabezonication on Jul 6, 2009 4:35 PM MDT up reply actions

Marion for max money is a clear no (same as Amare)

Marion for the MLE! Absofuckinglutely!!!!!

by ArizonaCactus on Jul 6, 2009 4:50 PM MDT up reply actions

Humbled

I can agree and get behind if he has indeed been humbled, which is a very good point you’ve made Stan.Hopefully this is true if we land him, but not for a max contract. He’s not worth that anymore.

by Willman on Jul 6, 2009 6:06 PM MDT up reply actions

dont get our hopes up

even if they offer him a contract at the mid level exception and assuming he takes it, it’ll cost suns management about 11mil a year bc of the tax so im sad to say that i dont think it’ll happen=(

by VLsunsfan on Jul 6, 2009 3:04 PM MDT reply actions

So you're saying...

I am going to be able to rock my Marion jerseys once again! Sweet!

Seriously though, I like it, depending on the long-term cap impact. Let’s face it—the Suns championship window is shut, at least for the next couple of years. What I’m hoping is that the team can avoid being awful while waiting for the youngsters develop and the front office to really re-load. Matrix for the MLE for a couple of years brings back a fan favorite, ups the offense and defense, and, again, reloads my wardrobe.

only if

that nash , j rich , marion , amare , chandler line up would be amazing and fun to watch again with gentrys version of the run and gun but once again KERR is our GM and its about $$$$ not winning right now!!

And Thats Real!!

by MrSunsRealDeal on Jul 6, 2009 3:17 PM MDT reply actions

if they get chandler

then i think they see that that would be a winning squad. Sarver wuill spend the money for a winning team

by Funky Flapsack on Jul 6, 2009 3:29 PM MDT up reply actions

Where were you under Coach D?

We traded our future away for cash considerations. Why? Because money was more important than winning. If D and Sarver would have kept those picks, Kerr would likely be putting out on the court a championship team, possibly one with a ring already.

I trust Kerr a lot more than either D’antoni or Sarver, and I thought I read a while ago that Sarver isn’t even in charge anymore, so. Let’s watch this offeason and the next play out. If after 2010 we still suck rocks, then you can have Kerr’s head, but I think it’s VERY unfair to dump the mistakes of D’antoni and Sarver onto Kerr’s lap just because Kerr was at the crime scene while the bodies still cooled. Basically Kerr has been trying to fix the issues he came upon, and hasn’t had much of a chance to build a team yet.

Take care of the little things, and the big things will take care of themselves.

by SunDolphin on Jul 6, 2009 3:52 PM MDT up reply actions

The trading away of picks was D'Antoni's fault

I really think D’ Antoni was the reason we kept giving away picks. The Sarver/D’Antoni regime was operating under the thought that we had a championship roster and wasn’t willing to develop new players. Sarver, at this point, was listening mostly to D’Antoni. If Sarver was cheap, they would have kept the draft picks as they are relatively cheaper. Hopefully Sarver has learned. Unfortunately, with the global economic meltdown, Sarver has become cheaper, Hopefully, however, he has stayed willing to pay more than the luxury tax, but for a team that actually has a chance at success

Since Kerr has been in charge, he has made some mistakes, as has been clearly shown. But he has also shown that he is better in balancing the short term needs of a good team versus the long-term needs of developing young talent.

It will take years to get over the effects of the last few years’ mismanagement, but I actually think that Kerr, if not held back by Sarver, will be able to do so.

by ArizonaCactus on Jul 6, 2009 4:08 PM MDT up reply actions

Yup

if you look at the end of the bench guys that D’Antoni had (and didn’t play) during those 04-07 years he wanted older vets and had no desire to deal with rookies.

by Seth Pollack on Jul 6, 2009 4:20 PM MDT up reply actions

I'm so flabbergasted ...

Like many, as to what Kerr’s direction is for this offseason. If we’re looking to contend, them I’m all for bringing back the ‘Trix, but if we’re rebuilding, then I’d rather have someone like Channing Frye, who’s a lot younger.

If we do bring back Marion, keep Amare, keep Nash, and perhaps bring on Tyson Chandler, that will be a strange, strange journey that almost makes the last two years seem like a complete waste, as now our core players are just two years older and slower. Ultimately, though, I guess we’ll have gotten better, because Chandler, if healthy, is a worthy addition. The unfortunately thing is that everyone else in the West got a lot better, too.

Might not have to worry about Trix coexisting with Amare

Amare to Golden State is NOT dead –

According to Ric Bucher’s Twitter feed:

Sources are mixed on if Amare-to-GS still happens. My hunch is yes because Nelly wants him and Phx wants to move on. (about 2 hours ago from web)

As for Amare saying he wouldn’t re-sign w/GS: Phx source says Amare changes his mind every 10 min. Source not putting much stock in that. (about 2 hours ago from web)

Ric Bucher is dumb

Paul Coro is the best source for Suns info, and he says we likely keep him

by Funky Flapsack on Jul 6, 2009 3:55 PM MDT up reply actions

I agree ...

… I don’t like Bucher either – he reminds me of Matt Damon’s demented brother or something. Anyway, I hope it’s BS, because at this point I don’t think it would be wise move to go ahead with the G.S. trade (unless we rob them blind of course). And, I would be very interested to see what a team of Nash/J-Rich/Matrix/Amare/Chandler/Barbosa could do next year …

didnt bucher also say on the day of the draft that stoudemire for tmac was a done deal? the guy just speculates and gives his opinion which more often than not is untrue

Anybody thinks its possible that we trade Pavolic over to Utah for our 1st Round pick back and they use that money to get Millsap we both win they get cap relief and get to re-sign Millsap and we get our first round pick back

Rich Bucher's has reported.....

Sources have told Ric Bucher that the much-discussed trade between the Golden State Warriors and Phoenix Suns for Amare Soudemire may be heating up once again. As tweeted by Bucher: “Sources are mixed on if Amare-to-GS still happens. My hunch is yes because Nelly wants him and Phx wants to move on.” Earlier reports from the San Jose Mercury News Tuesday that Stoudemire had now interest in joining the Warriors or signing an extension with the team.

by crab dribble cocktail on Jul 6, 2009 4:37 PM MDT reply actions

Eh...

A few things to consider…
1. I am not buying the Amare/GS talks. I think Nelly is blowing smoke and Bucher is a little high on something. Kerr won’t do it without Curry and even if they do I am not sure he will do it. Keeping Amare is good stuff right now. And with Sarver and Amare sitting together the other night and chatting it up, I dont think he going anywhere.

2. Matrix back to PHX is sick. If he even considers coming back then we are golden. An MLE for 2 years of great play? I am not sure whether he realizes that he was only as good as Nash was but it doens’t really matter at this point. He plays great and thats what matters. Whats more, being the only vet on a second line with Dragic, Lopez, Clark, etc will give him more minutes and more stats. Great stuff for him. Plus, Mike was the reason that he didn’t have any set plays but Gentry might deal with it differently.

3. I look on Tyson Chandler’s website and he said something interesting about the draft for NO. His advice for NO in the draft was to get Earl Clark because of his length and athleticism. Interesting, then, that PHX picked him up! Maybe its coincidence, maybe something more? Not sure, but I find it intriguing that he would say that and we just happen to pick up Clark…

Go read a book!

COME HOME SHAWN!

PLEASE COME HOME! PLEASE!

Steve Nash, the league's MVP, is a longhaired Canadian who spoke out against the war in Iraq and reads The Communist Manifesto. Quentin Richardson declared after a game-winning shot that it "was like Hamlet. It was a suspense thriller, and I killed them at the end." Amare Stoudemire, when asked to comment on a 22-point third quarter against the Kings, said, "I've got a tendency to jump over some guys' heads and throw it down."

Kerr “has made some mistakes”
What? I haven’t seen a single thing that he did right (except for making a couple of great threepointers years ago.
As for D’Antonio, I have yet to see a coach (including Gentry but excluding Colangelo) who could make Suns as good as they were when he was here. If you have any doubts, watch Knicks in a couple of years.
