Jerry is an idea man. From his first days working for the Buills till now, he has been coming up with ideas and implementing them. He was a player, a coach, a GM, an owner in two sports.
Many see him as a shameless self promoter who always wants to be in the limelight. I do not. I think he embodies excellence.
One of the most exciting runs the Suns have ever had was coached by Colangelo. The Suns were mired in cement under Johnny Kerr when JC fired him and took over. He turned the team around immediately. He started letting The Hawk do what he does best, and stumpy Goodrich started shooting the lights out. They very nearly booted the Lakers with Baylor, West, and Chamberlain, from the playoffs.
This is what made the league sit up and take notice that there was a team in Phoenix. Seven years later, a man JC hired took the Suns on an improbable run to the NBA Finals. Ten years later, Colangelo cobbled enough money together to buy his beloved team and keep it in Phoenix just in time to bring back Cotton and wow us with the KJ-Chambers-Eddie Johnson team. Oh, and by the way, he found some spare time to bring a World Series title to the Valley. He kept baseball and basketball in Phoenix, not to mention the Mercury, which I think he was instrumental in getting to Phoenix.
Too bad he’s not here to save us from another Kerr. Us old time fans will always remember that JC WAS the Suns for a long time. Do you think Kerr will be here in 25 years with a long successful and entertaining record to look back on?
I think it is great he is going to try for the Chicago Olympics. If anyone can pull it off, he can.
