Quick concern....

Has anyone noticed the Suns only have 13 guys on their roster....at least according to their yahoo NBA team page.   I did some checking and a lot of the other playoff teams have a couple of guys more on their roster, anywhere from 15 to 17 from the few teams I checked.  I was wondering how we feel about that....should we try to pick up at least another player to come off the bench?  Possibly a center?  There's definately some talent on the team, but do we have enough depth to go through a long season and deal with injuries and rest times?  To the experts, any comments.....?

I think

the league minumum is 13, and this year, almost all the teams are going to stick with 13, because of the economy. The max is 15, from what I remember, and most teams will be dropping players before the season begins.

then there's the Dallas Mavericks

You could run your team like a football club, with 3 guys inactive just in case someone gets injured or you want a special look or to lock up talent etc.

This season will be even better as long as I'm drinking while watching!

Like the old Yankees

They used to stash players all the time to keep them from going somewhere else. I always felt like Dallas uses a shell game in that regard. That’s what Donnie Nelson does. He is not so much a GM as he is responsible for circumventing abiding by the cap.

Very rare

The Suns rarely carry more than 13 guys on their roster during the season, at least in recent years. In fact, they’ve even gone long stretches (as long as possible, per league rules) with 12, such as in the weeks after the 3-for-2 trade last year, when they only picked Sims up on a 15-day contract right at the deadline.

Anyway, the 13th guy usually spends a lot of his time in the D-League.

Er, Dee Brown

I knew Sims didn’t seem right, and now I remember. That first 15-day contract was given to Dee Brown.

D-League

Actually, I haven’t heard of any Suns that have been sent to the D-League. Sims sure, but he didn’t even really play for the Suns.

Dragic and/or Lopez could have benefited from some time in the D for confidence and experience.

Not as much last year

But Tucker and Strawberry spent a great deal of time in the D-League two years ago. I think Dragic could have benefitted from the extra playing time, but I think they were very careful because they knew he was still adjusting to being in the US. Sending him to Iowa would have severely messed with the kid’s head.

If they keep Griffin on the roster, I expect he’ll be spending a lot of time in the NBA DL.

I’m very much looking forward to the season!

Thanks!

I appreciate the information. I have a few brief thoughts on our prospects this year.

I think the two key guys who can impact how the season goes for us, as well as our playoff hopes, are Dragic and Lopez. If Dragic has a good enough season, then Nash will be rested and hopefully healthy for the playoffs. And if Lopez does a decent enough job at the 5 spot (average 10 points, 8 rebounds, and play good defense), then Stoudamire can do his thing at the 4 spot and Frye can play well off the bench and get lots of playing time in either the 4 or 5 spots.

If Lopez doesn’t do well enough to start and Frye has to start, or worst yet we have to move Amar’e to the 5 spot, then we still might put up lots of points but so will whoever we play. Our best chance if all the other players perform more or less as well as they’re supposed to or capable of, is for Dragic and Lopez to have a good season for us. And if on top of that, E.Clark can surprise us off the bench as a rookie, lookout western conference!

PG with defense and one more big!!!!

I felt that too.A weird feeling of incomplete. The other teams that have good PG beat us in that position and we need a rival for them.A PG with some balls, scrappy, makes some stops, steals.A mini Rodman like, but PG and one more big like some type of back to the basket post player or a tyson chandler like shot blocker who can run fast breaks.
