Dan Dickau a good backup PG?

Now I don't hold much optimism for any backup PG that come to Phoenix these days but I recently learned that Dan Dickau(drafted with the 28th pick by Sacramento in the 2002 NBA draft) chose to attend the Phoenix training camp over Boston's. Now this got me to doing some research and what I found gave me a small glimpse of hope.

According to NBA statistics Mr. Dickau had himself a pretty good season 2004-2005 when he actually started the vast majority of his games and played more than 30 minutes per game for the recently relocated New Orleans Hornets. He averaged 13.2 ppg, 5.2 apg, 1.1 spg, and 2.7 rpg.

After that he was quickly traded when the Hornets acquired Chris Paul with the 4th pick in the draft and that's where his story ends, actually it does go on but there's nothing else quite notable. My point is if we can get him for cheap and something does happen either to Nash or Dragic we have a guy who has proven that when given the appropriate amount of time he can play pretty well.

But enough on my thoughts my question to you all is should the Suns sign him if they can get him at a bargain price?

Go for it

Maybe it is just the fact fact that I am from eastern Washington and love the Bulldogs, but I think Dickau could be a real asset as a backup. He is winner and he can shoot. Not super athletic but definately has some B-Ball IQ. I say, if we can sign him for the minumum, let’s go for it.

he is good

for a backup role in a scoring offense, he is solid from 3, has nice court vision and has never been a negative contributor. see him as a steve blake kind of guy. nothing flashy, nothing extraordinary, not that great – but good for a role we really need with Tragic being who he is (sorry, couldn’t resist)

He’s signed. He was at media day getting pics taken of him and all.

I was very surprised at how small he was. Odds are it would take a horrendous preseason (or a horrendous injury) for Dickau to deseat Goran as backup PG.

He's only signed for

training camp. He’s not been signed to a contract for the season and likely won’t be

Dickau (if the guy with the black hair was him) has some brawny-looking arms for a point guard, though.

ugh

dickau terrifyingly resembles the ceiling for goran to me. id be excited about bobby jackson. If I remember correctly, he is still a great back-up.

Dickau ok but ...

Dickau is ok but I’m not ready to give up on Dragic, He looked good in the euro league over the summer. He has some potential especially defensively. I would rather spend another year developing Dragic to see what he can do, instead of giving his minutes to Dickau. I love suns more then anything but it’s not like we are going to be competing for the championship this season. Build these young guys up. If Dragic falls apart this year then explore other possibilities.

i agree with that.

i like the idea of dickau being a third string PG, not the backup position he’s hoping to land.

i still want the suns to give the majority of the backup PG minutes to dragic, and then, if either he’s injured or hurting the team, put in dickau. but only in that type of situation. i don’t want it to seem like we’re giving up on dragic. we all know how important having confidence in the kid is to his game.

3rd String PG

We don’t need a third string PG. We need either a first or second string Center depending on how sold we are on Fropez.

Do we have anyone playing center?

Dickau looks like Tony Horton and the wolf man had a baby… I’d take him as a 3rd string PG though

Dragic has more upside than Dickau

I like Dickau, he is a pass first point guard who controls the pace of the game well. I think Dragic will be better though, remember that he is 6’4" and Dickau is only 6’0. So Dragic could be more of a defensive player. I think we could use Dickau, but we probably won’t keep him.

Sure Dragic has more upside...

I don’t understand.

by species8473 on Oct 11, 2009 11:31 PM MDT up reply actions

I guess it was a little cryptic.

I was having a go at Dragic, basically saying when you’re that bad, you have more “Upside potential”.

I’m not a Dragic fan, and i believe the experiment has gone on long enough and we need a real backup for Nash. (that’s only my opinion, i’m not stating it as fact or anything). Servicable backup PGs have been on the market, and we have made no moves to acquire one. How much of a mistake that is we will find out when Nash has his rest and Dragic checks into the game.

by Chucko on Oct 12, 2009 4:27 PM MDT up reply actions

Dragic did play well in the last game…

Dragic Support

I’m a Dragic believer. Players usually don’t start being a big part of the team until their third season. I’d give him even more than that since he’s a foreigner and missed preseason last year. This dude could be the next Tony Parker if he develops or a serviceable backup PG.

Give him more time.

by eagleheart on Oct 13, 2009 12:15 AM MDT up reply actions

Well, he’s got 2 seasons to come good, Once Nash retires, he’s who we’re relying on to run the point.

For the sun’s sake, i hope you’re right.

by Chucko on Oct 13, 2009 8:19 PM MDT up reply actions

Dragic’s contract is up before Nash’s I think. If we’re not convinced then, we let him walk. It’s that simple.
