PF/C Stephane Lasme To Work Out For Phoenix Suns

NBA reporter/blogger Alex Kennedy is reporting via twitter that Stephane Lasme will work out for the Phoenix Suns today or tomorrow.

Of course you don't know who he is, but check out the bio here. Lasme is an undersized PF/C with great athleticism who works harder than anyone else on the floor and rebounds and blocks shots with abandon.

Think we're the only ones disappointed in Friday's blowout loss to the Nuggets which featured an incredibly low energy level, on the heels of a preseason where the Suns showed poor board work? The Suns need someone to bring a spark. Lasme wouldn't fill a major void (we're still talking 11th-15th man here), but could provide energy and grab a few boards/blocks/steals in limited minutes.

Does Lasme's skills remind you of anyone?

He just got cut by Boston after a stellar preseason (from 2nd/3rd string perspective), and is currently considering an assignment to their D-League affiliate. Check out CelticsBlog's coverage of his potential D-League assignment  and an ESPN feature story after a couple of breakout games.

Interesting. They compare him to Chuck Hayes. He’s small, but plays big. Glad the team brought him in. He’s got more experience under his belt than Lawal, so he may be more ready for the NBA. I assume if the work-outs go by well, they’ll sign him to something like a 10 day contract and go from there based on his performance?

he seems readier than Clark and Lawal

to provide short, sparky minutes. He’s short, and doesn’t have the ballast of a Hayes. He seems more like a Lou-type.

Yea, he does. They said he’s a pretty good defender. He’ll get steals and blocks. That’s something Lou didn’t provide(the steals part). Will have to see how he does in the workouts and whether he can translate any of that into the NBA.

I wonder if he was with the Celtics during their training camp? If so, than that’s a plus.

I like how they use words such as phenomenal and ridiculous to describe him. I can see why the team brought him in. They probably read the same bio.

“Phenomenal” and “ridiculous” are annoying buzzwords in the NBA. The misuse of the word “ridiculous” is ridiculous.

I guess this means it is less likely that Dampier signs. Not disappointed though. Eric is kind of pulling a Farve. Lasme had a pretty good pre-season and that kind of makes me excited even though he’s most likely not a savior, but hey any news on our FO trying to improve the team after a huge blow-out to a bunch of bench warmers is good news.

Don't trade Dudley!

by Beavis 25 on Oct 24, 2010 8:04 AM MST reply actions

not sure that would impact Dampier

Lasme would impact Clark and Lawal’s potential playing time, should there be injury or foul trouble (or poor play) from Hedo and Warrick. You just can’t count on Lawal and Clark right now. So the Suns might just be looking for better insurance policy there.

Dampier would be the insurance for Lopez and Frye, and would likely take a month or more to get in shape. And even then, I’m thinking he’d only see regular minutes if Lopez gets hurt or in foul trouble.

Would we have enough room to sign both? That would make a deep roster even deeper

Guards:
Nash
Richardson
Dragic
Janning

Forwards:
Hill
Hedo
Warrick
Chill
Dudley
Frye
Lasme
Clark
Lawal

Centers:
Lopez
Dampier
Silo

16 dudes though…we’re only allowed 15, right?

i dont know jack about this guy, 6-7

he is too short to be a pf not to even say C. if he is as good as you/they say as a defender, then he is welcome. having what we have and needing to rest hill, i say he will see 8-10 mpg especially on the bad end of b2b.
what baffles me is why boston (who we all know cant keep their bigs off d injury list) released a low cost insurance.
hope d FO is planning for something big to land that franchise guy (horford) we are all waiting for since they are expecting jrich to extend with smaller pay (captain), which means they/we dont want him traded, which means we will likely boost the value of guys like warrick, frye and even dudz to get what we need or what do you think?
by the way its good to be back on bsots

People love the Dunk, but i'll rather see a skillful athletic shot, a super 3-pointer from another area code or seeing players get Dragic-ed

by jatrex4suns on Oct 24, 2010 8:50 AM MST via mobile reply actions

That's my biggest concern as well...

When Alex mentioned he was another undersized PF/C, my first thought was “yeah, just what we need.”. But then I kept reading and started to think he may be worth a shot with how good of a rebounder he is, and how he seems to have a knack for stealing the ball.

Then, just when I was getting on board I read his bio and saw that he was only 6’7"! That means he would be around the same size as J-rich or Grant Hill…except as a PF/C. That seems VERY undersized to me, and with a team looking to bring in another big man, he doesn’t seem to fit.

Then again, maybe we are looking at keeping him in addition to Siler. If that is the case, I say why not? If he can come in and impress our staff with energy and hustle, I would love to see us find room on our bench for a guy like that.

Still, Chuck proved that rebounding is about heart and desire, not height

don’t forget the ass…you need a low, strong base to battle in the paint plus Charles had vertical explosiveness in his prime. A rare combination.

I wanted to draft this guy a few years back before Golden State did

Wasn’t he a ridiculous shotblocker in the NCAA? I think he led the nation. He also tied a triple double record I think.

I just remember concerns about his attitude.

tied for most triple doubles in one season

With Jason Kidd.

Would be interesting if he ever panned out for us as that is another guy we missed in that year’s draft for Alando Tucker (adding to the list that already includes Marc Gasol and Carl Landry). It would be one more piece of evidence in the case that the Suns front office is not as great with their drafts as we sometimes give them credit for.

Dragic, Lopez, Barbosa and Stoudemire are the only notable names in the last 10 years that have proven something so far. And if this guy does sign here and ever leapfrogs Lawal too, well then good thing Griffin and Kerr aren’t here anymore and that Quinter is scouting NBA players again and we’re giving someone else a shot at evaluating college talent.

Waiving Clark before Janning would be a huge mistake IMO

agreed...

…because if Clark ever gets it together, he will give the Suns things that they lack. Janning…he would give the Suns more of what they already have.

by 8472species on Oct 24, 2010 4:51 PM MST up reply actions

Yes, but....

It’s the job of the team’s personnel people to have foresight and be able to somewhat accurately project what players will become. If, after seeing Clark every day for the last 1+ years, they have determined that his flaws aren’t correctable, then there is no need to keep him around.

by East Bay Ray on Oct 24, 2010 5:05 PM MST up reply actions

And do you say they aren’t? I say I don’t know. Lopez and Dragic got it together after a season and a half, maybe a little less. That gives Clark a little time. Haven’t we been saying Stephane Lasme is one of those low-risk, high-reward players? Well, letting Clark stay longer and waiving someone else who isn’t extremely important, such as Janning, could be a low-risk, high-reward proposition.

by 8472species on Oct 24, 2010 6:23 PM MST up reply actions

breakout games?

his first game was the only impressive one
3-4, 12 pts, 6-7 FT, 4 reb in 7:07

the next two games

0-3, 0 pts, 2 reb, 1 assist, 1 foul in 6:28

1-2, 2 pts, 1 reb, 1 assist, 2 fouls in 10 minutes.

by billyjohnson on Oct 24, 2010 9:47 AM MST reply actions

On a team with a stacked frontcourt and depth issues on the perimeter,

Lasme almost beat out Von Wafer.

That being said, I don’t know about this. I’ve been pretty optimistic about the team so far, but the more I think about it the more I worry about the make-up of the roster. 4 guards with Janning as the 5th. I know people like Siler, but I’m not sold on him for this team. All of our PFs are undersized as it is, and now we’re talking about adding another? Hedo, Hakim, Earl, and Gani all can’t be relied upon to play C, and none of them are really separating themselves in the depth chart, at least as far as the games go. With the way the roster is put together, I think trade is the best, and really only viable option as far as making the team better, and for that we have to wait a couple of months.

Excuse my moment of pessimism. Go Suns!

Zoubek is the only one

I’ve watched, and he was pretty gritty and tough at the college level. Not sure what he did or didn’t show the Nets that made them cut him.

He’s not that athletic or agile from what I remembered, but he’s also no Aaron Gray either. He’s extremely strong and a monster to battle against on the boards, but I don’t remember him being very useful offensively except grabbing his own bucket off the rim. Not a pick-and-roll guy, jumpshooter, etc, just a strong gritty rebounder who is difficult to move or back down in the post.

Hopefully he's a Shawn Marion type 6'7

Marion once averaged 11 rbds, 2 steals and 1.5 blks per game for PHX and he’s only 6’7 228.

I still think it’d be better if they found that sort of production out of a larger player.

by Humongous on Oct 24, 2010 12:43 PM MST reply actions

pretty sure a guy we just got off the waiver wire wont be anything close to marion

by suns13 on Oct 24, 2010 1:08 PM MST reply actions

I’m sure he won’t. I was just using Marion as an example of smaller forwards who can put up
big man numbers.

The difference would be that this guy won’t average 20 a night at the same time like Marion.
Just hoping for Marion-like defense.

Also, when you consider that Boston already has Garnett, Shaq and J O’neal, 6’7 guy who can rebound is sort of useless.

Lou was also signed off the scrap heap by the suns, and played a pivotal role that earned him a higher asking price than his ceiling indicates.

I been mum on most things Suns related as of late, but I feel the trade for Hedo T was rushed…I mean we are taking a square and trying to put it in a circle and hope that it fits…I feel that all the efforts of the front office should be focused on getting Al Horford to the Suns AL HORFORD AKA THE MISSING LINK

Too small

Hopefully that 213lbs on his draftexpress profile is no longer accurate, because if so, that’s not enough.

Last thing we need is another forward who is too small to play Power Forward and needs tall shoes to even be measured at 6 foot 7.

I said it last season, said in the off-season, and I’ll say it again. Lou was a total key to our success last year. I can’t believe we let him go. The guy was a bona-fide game changer, ass-kicker, boxer-type who also rode a bicycle to home games. Does it get any better than that? Oh Lou, I’m sorry we blew it and let you go.

I am a Umass fan and a Celtic sth….this guy is great and the only reason he was let go is because we had to keep an extra point guard due to Delonte West.
