What about Greg Oden?

I was listening to talk radio this morning and I heard the radio host say that Greg Oden or either the Blazers would not pick up the 3rd year option on his contract. I know that we are only two games into this season, but if Oden could be had for next to nothing whether a trade this year or try to sign him out-right next season should we persue it. Also do you guys think it would be worth it to bring him and could he help us.

Suns still have the Amar'e trade exception

If Odin’s Beard and White Kong come back around the same time, the Blazers will have 4 active C/PF (Camby, Oberto, Przybilla, Oden), so they will need to move at least 1 of them. Actually, if they are a top 3 West team, they will want all the bigs in the world to combat the LA size advantage in the playoffs.
If they are in the 5-8 range, they’ll probably dangle Oden and Przybilla for some picks and immediate cap relief.
I say the Suns send the trade exception and a second rounder for Oden when he gets healthy, see how he fits in the system, and if he sucks, let his 6million come off the books.

No way they

are moving him…not extending him has a LOT to do w/ the new CBA (same reason Suns aren’t extending JRich or Dudley).

What about Eddy Curry?

I was listening to my inner voice this morning and I heard it say that Eddy Curry or either the Knicks would not pick up the renew his contract. I know that we are only two games into this season, but if Curry could be had for next to nothing whether a trade this year or try to sign him out-right next season should we persue it. Also do you guys think it would be worth it to bring him and could he help us.

No he coudln't help us

He’s the worst player in the history of the NBA. He actually posts a negative PER. That’s freakin impressive to be that inefficient.

by jc79 on Oct 29, 2010 1:19 PM MST up reply actions

At least he'd lose weight...

There’s nothing wrong with Robin Lopez. He’s no Brook Lopez, but then again, who is?

If the Blazers don’t pursue Pendergraph — an Arizona (ASU) guy — that would be a good guy to pursue next year for backup 5 minutes. He’s functional for 10-15 a night…

They're not moving him

He’s still an absolutely incredible player when he’s healthy. His potential will garner him a 60 million dollar offer from some team, and if he pans out it will be worth it. They haven’t offered him an extension because he hasn’t earned his current contract; he wouldn’t even take an extension right now because he can get so much more if he has a healthy year.

Steve Nash, the league's MVP, is a longhaired Canadian who spoke out against the war in Iraq and reads The Communist Manifesto. Quentin Richardson declared after a game-winning shot that it "was like Hamlet. It was a suspense thriller, and I killed them at the end." Amare Stoudemire, when asked to comment on a 22-point third quarter against the Kings, said, "I've got a tendency to jump over some guys' heads and throw it down."

by rsavaj on Oct 29, 2010 1:40 PM MST reply actions

He's not up for an extension, just his rookie contract option

He joins Kwame as the only No. 1 picks to have their teams not pick up their options. If the Blazers aren’t willing to keep an absolutely incredible player when he’s healthy, that means there’s a storm brewing… not exactly one that’s gonna land 60 million either.

by ajotanelsona on Oct 29, 2010 1:56 PM MST up reply actions

I'm pretty sure he'll be a restricted FA next year now.

As was mentioned, this likely has to do with the new CBA and Oden’s inability to live up to his contract. As rsavaj said, he is a talented dude and I’m sure the Blazers are planning to keep him if things turn out well. They have the right to match any contract offer, and we all know Paul Allen isn’t afraid of spending money.

They aren’t trading him. If they need to ditch a big they’ll probably just cut Oberto.

Extend Jared Dudley!

by Omaha Sun on Oct 29, 2010 4:03 PM MST up reply actions

Yeah...

Portland wants to see him get through a season before they put big money on the line; Oden’s camp doesn’t want to sign a contract heavily discounted for the expectation that he will be injury-prone.

Portland is still marketing their “big 3” of Roy + Aldridge + Oden on posters. They’ll pretty much certainly match any Free Agent offer on him.

That said, there MIGHT be a possibility that he will be traded. But Cho would try to finagle a Dragic deal cheaper than that.

Durant

already signed an extension

Actually, it's a qualifying offer

So, if they would have made the offer, he could have refused and become a FA.
Your argument stands.

The Blazers have to do something with their bigs jam...

I’m not sure if Oden will be the one who gets shipped off, but pretty soon they’ll have a healthy Oden, Camby, Oberto, and Przybilla. They’ll be 4 centers deep. At least one of them will have to go, right?

by iwasneveryoung on Oct 30, 2010 1:14 AM MST reply actions

Oberto is the one to go.

He’s only there because the other 2 weren’t ready to go yet and Pendergraph blew out his knee.

Extend Jared Dudley!

by Omaha Sun on Oct 30, 2010 11:24 AM MST up reply actions

Oberto is emergency filler for the first half of November.

They’ll use Camby at PF if both Pryz and Oden are healthy…

injuries

Injuries, one of Oden’s biggest concerns. And if we could have him, I think he might not fit in our system. I prefer horford or josh smith more.

by shawndy on Oct 30, 2010 8:05 AM MST via mobile reply actions

But Oden's a legit 7 footer, a true center to backup Robin and a lot easier to get and the 2 Hawks you've mentioned

In my opinion, we don't devote nearly enough scientific research to finding a cure for jerks. - Calvin

by Spit_Fire on Oct 30, 2010 8:18 AM MST up reply actions

True

Horford and Smith would be hard to get and the Hawks would not let go of them easily. Oden is a defensive force, and if we could have him, I wish it would be now. We need a big to matchup big teams in the league. We could just hope less injuries.

by shawndy on Oct 30, 2010 8:22 AM MST via mobile up reply actions

uh, if we got him now

it wouldn’t help the Suns one bit

Oden could help us

He could help Robin protect the paint and could solve our rebounding problems. I know we don’t have to rebound, but we gang rebound, maybe , Oden is a beast gang rebounder. Just sayin. Hahaha
But someone posted earlier about Kevin Love, I think if we could get him, he’d be our missing PF.

by shawndy on Oct 31, 2010 2:26 AM MST via mobile up reply actions

Except when healthy, Oden is better than Robin.

It’s the same problem that came up when people were calling for Marc Gasol. They are all true Cs that deserve 30+ mpg and won’t get that on the same time.

It works for the Lakers because Pau Gasol is a freak of nature. He has C size with the skills to play PF. Marc, Oden, and Robin all don’t have that ability.

Extend Jared Dudley!

Brook has PF skills - Robin might be able to develop them, in the next two years.

He’s going to get plenty of practice at the P&R, anyway.

And those two have actually played together and their games compliment each other.

If there is any C that can play next to Robin it would be Brook.

I heard...

that the Hawks will be trying to put Josh Smith and/or Jamal Crawford on the trading post for money reasons. We couldn’t have Josh last year because we still had Amare…and who would give up Amare for Josh Smith?…Honestly i would’ve lol. But now who do we have that would catch the Hawks attention?

by SunsForLife on Nov 2, 2010 8:47 AM MST reply actions

and....

yah i would try to get Oden now as well. I believe he’ll be back before the All-Star break. I say sign him for a 2yr deal with an optional 3-4yr option if he stays healthy.

by SunsForLife on Nov 2, 2010 8:57 AM MST reply actions

That worked so well

when it was a near-max deal for Amar’e Stoudemire. I don’t see Oden (or more accurately, Oden’s agent) biting on anything like that.

Twitter: @MikeLisboa

by Mike Lisboa on Nov 2, 2010 9:00 AM MST up reply actions

yah i guess

but he has to realize or at least his agent, that he’s not at his full potential anymore. And that he’s lucky to even get considerations from other teams…considering his notoriously bad health problems.

by SunsForLife on Nov 2, 2010 9:09 AM MST reply actions

If anyone could keep Oden healthy...

it’s Aaron Nelson. Plus, he could probably benefit from the Nash/Hill/Dudley diet plan to help him get in top physical form.

It’s still a gamble, but I would definitely be intrigued by the possibilities, as would anyone who remembered how athletic and dominant Oden was as a center in college.
