Is he or is he not overrated?
Lets have look at his career so far. He's played in 6 seasons averaging 17.5ppg, 12.7rpb and 2bpg in about 36mpg. He's shot around 57% for his career and 60% at the free throw line. His best season was the 08-09 season where he averaged 20.6ppg, 14rpg and 3bpg. Last season his averages dipped to around 18 and 13.
He is 24 years old and in the past 3 seasons he really hasn't improved that much at all. He doesn't really have an offensive game. In fact, all he can do is dunk much like Amar'e before 06. Because of that he can be shut down. Remember when we held this guy to one field goal attempt last season? We triple teamed him forcing him to pass the ball or we fouled him in which he missed about half his free throw attempts. Some question his heart or passion, leadership ability and even his basketball IQ. Is Dwight a leader?
However, Dwight is a very good rebounder and defender. He is also very durable having missed only 3 games in his 6 season career. The guy is a monster and a true force in the paint. He's very, very, athletic, in great shape and takes very good care of himself. He's a good locker room guy, funny, entertaining...
Overall, Dwight Howard is a beast, he is dominant, but not as dominant as most people think. He can be taken out of the game. He is not Superman, his presence never was or has been as commanding as Shaq's was back in the day. If we were to somehow mix the best of best talents of Amar'e and Howard we'd have the best big-man in the game and probably one of the best big-men ever. Right up there with Hakeem and Wilt.
He's overrated. Yet, I'd go crazy if Howard somehow ended up on the Suns(without losing Dudley). I really do believe Howard is overrated however, playing with Nash would hide all of that. In fact, Nash would probably be the best thing that ever happened to Dwight. His scoring averages would jump up to 27-28 a game. Even his rebounding would increase. He'd truly shine in our system which is Steve Nash.
I'm still trying to figure out how overrated this guy is though. Would he be worth trading both promising, young players in Dragic and Lopez for?
