Kings Thump Suns in Preseason Opener, 109-95
The good news is this game, like the rest of the preseason, means nothing. Nothing at all. The bad news is the Phoenix Suns were outscored by 22 points in the second half by the Sacramento Kings en route to a 109-95 defeat.
Steve Nash and Grant Hill combined to play 8 minutes, while Gani Lawal and Channing Frye did not play at all.
If you are pushing the panic button, I recommend Valium, yoga, or some Zen breathing exercises.
The Suns trotted out a lineup of Nash, Richardson, Lopez, Turkoglu and Hill. The starting unit, along with Josh Childress, Hakim Warrick, and Dwayne Jones, jumped out to a an 11 point lead and appeared in total command of the game until the end of the quarter, as the Suns amassed 6 turnovers. Still, they held on to a 31-26 lead.
Nash and Hill would not return for the rest of the game. But Jason Richardson added 8 points and Robin Lopez 5 in the second to lead the Suns to a 58-51 halftime lead. Cold shooting, turnovers and fouls plagued the Suns in the third, as the Kings went on a 14-4 run and eventually tied the game up going into the fourth quarter.
To summarize things quickly and easily, the Suns sounded like they were tired in the final 12 minutes as Tyreke Evans scored 10 points during a 20-6 that put the Kings up for good.
To emphasize once again, this was a preseason game. Still, there were some areas of concern, if you want to get concerned over an early October contest:
- The Suns committed 23 turnovers resulting in 25 King points.
- The Suns were out-rebounded 47-36.
- The Suns shot 2-16 from 3-point range.
- Hedo Turkoglu went 0-5 from the field in 16 minutes of play.
- Goran Dragic committed 6 turnovers in 25 minutes, dished out 1 (one) assist and logged a -24.
- The Suns scored 6 fast break points.
- The Suns allowed 50 points in the paint.
Of course there were bright spots:
- Robin Lopez played 31 minutes, scored 15, added 6 boards and 2 blocks while committing only 2 fouls. The fact that he produced without pain (or looking as though he was in pain) is a major victory.
- Jason Richardson went for 17 and 5 and shot just over 50% from the field (6-11).
- Josh Childress played efficiently, scoring 6 points, grabbing 5 rebounds and dishing 3 assists and adding a steal in 19 minutes of play.
- Jared Dudley went 5-8 from the field for 13 points, 5 rebounds, 2 assists and 2 blocks.
- Matt Janning sounded as if he played a fairly aggressive game, adding 8 points in 21 minutes.
Commentary:
I won't insult anyone's intelligence here by jumping to any insane conclusions. This game was full of auditions (Dwayne Jones and Chucky Atkins playing 17 minutes); meanwhile, some needed inside help in the form of Garret Siler and Gani Lawal did not play at all. My master-of-the-obvious skills tell me there is a game in Vancouver tomorrow and, as we all know, this preseason is a grand experiment that will determine the regular season rotation (at the outset only, of course), and running minutes off the bodies of Steve Nash and 38 year old Grant Hill makes no sense at all.
It is a bit disturbing, though, to see our Phoenix Suns shoot 2-16 from beyond the arc and get crushed in rebounding differential, but as I noted above, I think we were dealing with some tired legs and lack of dirtworkers. Expect less JRich tomorrow, more of Canada's favorite son, old man Hill, and the beast of Lawal to be unveiled.
Rest soundly, Suns fans. We'll catch you here tomorrow.

im thinking they are auditioning guys
im thinking they have a game tomorrow night and they want a specific rotation and want certain guys playing certain minutes, etc.
obviously i didnt watch this game, but the points in the paint was ridiculous and I think Gani could have helped a lot.
Still its not like he’s 38 and couldnt have put in 15 minutes….so it goes back to my previous statements. tonight was Dwayne and Robin and Earl’s night….maybe Gentry will comment

Yeah, that makes sense
Better to give guys meaningful minutes rather than trying to fit them all into every game. I do think Earl could have done better if he were to get some minutes within the flow of the game and not just thrown in at the end.

well, the Suns played 13 guys by halftime
so it’s not like Gentry tightened his rotation. He must have had a plan to save Nash, Hill and Lawal for game 2 on a back-to-back

Not sure
if we will see much from him…I think the Suns realize he’s not going to do much this season and there are a lot of other priorities before him.
Guessing they wanted to see how things looked w/ Jones at center and get a good look at the Hedo/Hakim PF.
Last year the preseason word was “work in progress”. This year it’s “experiment”

Better experimentation than alchemy...
I think we’ll figure this out by the Season opener..
STAT may be gone but the Suns will rise....!
Hmmm...interesting.
While I understand he’s buried in the depth chart…technically…The guy has shown nothing but promise in both college and his stint in the summer league. He out-shined nearly everyone else on the summer league roster, and looked to be one of the true bright spots out of the rookies (along with Reynolds and Janning). In fact, Lawal did enough to make me think of him as already being NBA ready, in contrast to someone like Earl who still seems completely befuddled going into his second year.
I hope the Suns do give him a legit shot to break the rotation…games are won when the best players are on the court, and from what I’ve seen he at least deserves a chance to prove his worth. Let’s hope he gets that shot tonight.
He's also
shown in practice that he has a LOT to learn about playing at the NBA level…out of position, how to defend, etc. Give him time.

Interview?
Does anybody know if there were interviews after the game and if so, where to find them? I’d love to know what Gentry had to say.
Jones looks like a keeper. Dude rebounds like a BEAST.
Steve Nash, the league's MVP, is a longhaired Canadian who spoke out against the war in Iraq and reads The Communist Manifesto. Quentin Richardson declared after a game-winning shot that it "was like Hamlet. It was a suspense thriller, and I killed them at the end." Amare Stoudemire, when asked to comment on a 22-point third quarter against the Kings, said, "I've got a tendency to jump over some guys' heads and throw it down."
He always dominated the boards in the D-League.
I think that’s why we signed him last year.
Formerly known as NashMV3 of BSotS, if anyone even remembers.
Nash is my mancrush. But Dragic is the 2nd coming of Manu Ginobili, which makes him just as tasty.
yet the Sac reporter
thought Jones did poorly on the boards (as with all the other Suns)

+1
Dudley + Lou = a lot of defensive energy.
Where’s it coming from this year? Our bench got dominated.
I like those 3
However Lopez is a starter and Lou brought untangibles that Warrick doesn’t bring. That is my beef: Lou stays, no Warrick.
I still like this squad, I just think Lou fit better.
I hear you.
I feel the same way, but I’m waiting until at least December before I give any verdicts.

I wish we had signed Lou instead of Warwick

Goran had 6 Turnovers?!
WHERE’S THE PANIC BUTTON???!!!
Sorry. Had to get that out of my system.. That did worry me a little bit..
Seriously though, I know it’s only preseason, but this doesn’t leave me with the best feeling in my stomach. And, my mom told me that women should always trust our gut instincts because we’re always right.
Im not just basing this off of a preseason game, but I don’t want to go into this season too optimistic. That way, I will either be surprised if we do really well, or, I won’t be depressed if we don’t end up being very good.
At least basketball is on again and I would rather watch the Suns not play a great game than not watch any game at all.
"If the Suns can shock the world
Goran Dragic is the name."
Without seeing the game at all
I would blame Goran for the loss, if anyone deserves blame. He used 19 possessions that only created 12 total points. That’s beyond horrible.
where'd you get that number?

From the box score
10 points + 1 assist = 12 points.
12 shot attempts + 1 assist + 6 turnovers = 19 possessions.
Maybe he was just nervous or something...?
Sometimes people just have bad games…?
Meh.. Im going to try and not worry too much about this. Instead, I am going to try and forget that this game happened, focus on tonight’s game, and hope for improvement..
I mean, Steve and Grant only played around five minutes which is completely unrealistic for a regular game.. Maybe Goran was just unprepared to lead for that amount of time…?
I am out of excuses. They’ll play better tonight,

that only counts in context
of all the other players. True, he had a bad game. But not likely as horrible as it looks if you put in context of everyone else on the floor.

Well, it's possible
that he made half a dozen assist passes that guys just didn’t finish… but I doubt it. We have a lot of guys who are good shooters.
A dick move on his part.

Goran vs. Beno
Goran played 25 minutes and was -24. Beno Udrih played 25 minutes and was +23. Did Beno lay the Slovenian smackdown on Goran?

No big deal. All the best teams do shitty in the preseason anyways

Our team sucks
I officially quit being a Suns fan after last night’s shameful game.
They say "don't swim with the sharks", but I'm faster than sharks so it's not a big deal...
It doesn't matter - it's gonna be all Kings, Wolves, and Wizards this year, anyway.

The only way for them is up and although the Suns are better right night now, the only way is down.

my two cents
The Suns shot 2-16 from 3-point range.
Hedo Turkoglu went 0-5 from the field in 16 minutes of play.
Goran Dragic committed 6 turnovers in 25 minutes, dished out 1 (one) assist and logged a -24.
The Suns scored 6 fast break points.
This only happens once in a blue-moon with the suns. They will get better, and don’t expect them to shoot that poorly from behind the line very often.
in 2005-06
the Suns shot 39.9% from 3 pt land, without ANY low-post scoring. Don’t underestimate the Suns offense.

Yes, and they were open because they were in transition
in the 7SOL system. Are they going back to that system?
7SOL is the foundation of the current system, but now with Gentry there are other things emphasized besides running and shooting.
The players are still coached to shoot whenever they’re open, unless their names are Earl or Jarron.

Interesting logic.
However, it seems to me that if the Suns’ trademark 3 point shooting was a result of Amare being double-teamed, then Amare would have averaged more than 1.3 apg for his career.
More realistically, the Suns’ 3 point shooting is a result of good spacing, solid rythym, and of course Steve.

No, because he was doubled when he didn't have the ball
Other teams routinely trapped the Nash-Stoudemire pick-n-rolls or at least rolled a defender into the lane and tried to rotate.
So the assist passes all went to Nash, or in some cases, the swingman on the outside.
Yet as Alex pointed out
The ‘05/’06 team didn’t miss a beat without Amare, proving that there was little relation between Amare’s presence and the team’s outside shooting.
"We didn’t go for coffee and this kind of stuff."
-El Dragon on his relationship with Sasha Vujacic
Yes, but that team didn't feature the pick n roll
as its primary offensive weapon. The primary offense for that team was jumpers in transition.
I seriously doubt that jumpers in transition will be our 1st offensive option this year, if only because we don’t have Shawn Marion and Kurt Thomas to sweep the boards, allowing all three other guys to release. You can’t gang rebound and play 7SOL at the same time.
oy
this is an unwinnable argument until the team actually plays a statistically relevant number of regular-season games.
Blogging Suns Basketball at Bright Side of the Sun
Vancouver tomorrow? Was that a joke?
I was at the game and thought it clearly turned on rebounding. The Kings, though short handed in the frontcourt (Dalmbert, Whiteside and Jackson did not play due to minor injuries) simply dominated in that area. When the game started the Kings trotted out a lineup designed to more or less match up with the Suns strengths. When they went to their own strengths they slowly puled away, then put it away.
