Game Preview: Phoenix Suns vs. Toronto Raptors in Vancouver, Preseason Game #2

Hallelujah, the season is upon us.

No time to fret over the last game because the next one comes up so quickly. Tonight, the Suns face the Raptors in Vancouver. And once again, it's not on TV. Not a single person south of the Canadian border will see the game with their own eyes.

I don't know about you, but last night's game thread was weird. It was like a Twilight Zone episode.

A new-millenium real-time game chat bringing Suns fans from all over the world together in one virtual place... as they all gathered around their respective transistors to listen to a game on AM radio. I had a strange desire to pour myself a glass of lemonade and rock on the front porch.

Tonight's gonna be deja vu all over again.

Edit: Seth has a better game preview here, complete with lots of links to non-BSotS recaps and previews amongst the interwebs.

I'll get better at this, I promise. Jump to the rest of the story anyway, to make me happy. We're #3!!

Star-divide

Pluses for the Suns:

  • Nash will likely play more minutes, since the game is in Vancouver
  • Toronto has a hole at the PF spot, too
  • Toronto made virtually no moves to fill that hole
  • Suns players get to give LB a big hug, and then probably cheer him on while he scores 20
  • Hedo Turkoglu gets a chance to show Toronto he can still play
  • Gani Lawal might get some minutes!

Now flush last night's game from your minds, Suns fans. Wins and losses mean NOTHING in the preseason.

If a vet plays bad, it means nothing (Dragic, Warrick) unless they played really well, in which case it means everything (Lopez).

Let's just hope Earl Clark finds some positive consistency.

Unless, of course, Gani Lawal blows the doors off the game.

Go, Suns!

How come the Suns game aren't at least on local television?

Im on vacation in Chicago right now and the Bulls game was on local TV.
NBA.com didn’t even have a boxscore for the Suns game so all I could do was attempt to follow the game thread from my dad’s Blackberry!
Hopefully there is a box score tonight because I most likely won’t be able to listen to the game on the internet tonight since we are going out for dinner.
Im happy about the reunion between the Suns and LB. That should be very nice. :)
And I definitely want to flush last night’s game from my mind. All night my cousins (Bulls fans) were giving me crap about Goran and then he had 6 turnovers.. :(
But then Brian Scalabrine came into the game and they stopped making fun of the Suns and they made fun of him instead, which was a nice break.

Yeah, as I said in last night's game thread...

The NBA could learn a few things from the NFL’s marketing. The NFL finds ways to make money off of preseasons and even practices in some instances.

It baffles me as to how the NBA can offer packages for summer league games, yet have nothing available for the preseason…There is definitely a market for these games (albeit nowhere near the size of the NFL’s), so I don’t see why they haven’t made these games available to the fans.

by 7footer on Oct 6, 2010 2:20 PM MST up reply actions

Last night's game was definitely taped

NBA TV had highlights with a running score on screen and commentary, there just didn’t seem to be anybody that felt they should televise it.

by hcblankscreen on Oct 6, 2010 2:23 PM MST up reply actions

and therein lies the problem...

Even if they don’t want to show it on T.V. (or locally where I know it would draw ratings), why not offer a preseason broadband package like they do with the summer league? It makes no sense to me, the cost of putting it together would be negligible, especially since they are being taped anyway. Fans of all teams could purchase the same package that would give them access to every preseason game online. They would have nothing to lose, and could make quite a bit of profit from the die-hard NBA fans.

Super totally rec'd.

Stern knows that no matter what happens, the NBA owns April, May, and some of June. Why bother giving the Rockets or the Bucks or the Warriors any pub in October? One way or another, he’ll be raking in the dough come spring, so until then he’s gonna pimp the Heat, Lakers and Celtics shamelessly.

What an asshat.

Well said! I have been wondering the same exact thing!
The Knicks vs. Timberwolves game was on NBA TV today which is understandable because they are in Europe..
But the Celtics vs. Nets game isn’t in Europe, is it? I am not at all interested in that game. I’d probably still watch it because it’s basketball, but still. If you asked me which two teams I would want to watch that weren’t the Suns, I would not say Boston or New jersey.

In case anyone was wondering

The Heat/Pistons game was/will be on another 4 times today. But, don’t worry. That’s not all they’re showing today. You can also catch 3 viewings of Real Training Camp with the Miami Heat. Can’t NBA TV:

a.) show more preseason games? They’re only showing one a day.

b.) At the very least run NBA Gametime more often and have it not be all about the 1 game they’ve shown over and over again, or telling us about LeBron’s experience getting a pedicure, or whatever? Maybe a real highlight show that gives good coverage to all the games?

c.) Why not have training camp updates from around the league? Like, an hour show profiling each of the league’s teams? MLB TV did that and it was great.

Dampier’s an elite rebounder, and were we to get him for little more than minimum money, I’d be happy.

by jc79 on Oct 6, 2010 2:53 PM MST up reply actions

what bothers me about Dampier

is how long he’s taking to find a team. He’s flirted with the HEAT, Bucks and Raptors so far, and didn’t sign with any of them. Houston has wanted him for a while, but he hasn’t signed with them either.

Why not sign by now? What’s the hold up?

I’m thinking he wants a starting gig for good money on a winning team. Problem is, he won’t get that anywhere. Until he lowers his expectations, he’s gonna float out there.

Mavs have Chandler and Haywood making 20+ mill between them at C. Plus, I think 2 other 7-footers on the roster.

Reading Stein’s post carefully, there’s no mention of Maverick interest. It’s just that he’s meeting with Bulls mgmt while they are playing the Mavs in Dallas.

Hedo's Triumphant Return to Canada!
Toronto has a hole at the PF spot, too
Toronto made virtually no moves to fill that hole

, too

I think both of these statements work with the comma and too at the end. Just saying, that’s all….

We all know that Nash will receive a standing ovation from the crowd, but what about Hedo? I know it’s not Toronto, but I think the Vancouver residents probably appreciated everything the Terrible Turk contributed to their great country during his short stint. It will be interesting to see how Hedo handles the sentimentality of the moment. I bet he tears up a little….

Hopefully the Suns can compete with Toronto on the glass. I don’t want a negative double digit disparity to become the norm.

Look for the shooting to heat up tonight. The Suns have too many weapons to go 2-16 a whole lot.

The Suns will win in Nash’s (and Hedo’s) triumphant return to Canada, 111-103.

I wanted to know what the Suns’ ratings are this year on their totally messed up system. It’s been messed up for a few years, but I could use the laughs.

The Suns are always underrated at first, but they’ll fix it once the season starts and they update the roster.

Also, if anyone still has their copy of EA’s NBA Live 10 from last year, they are going to provide free roster updates for this season as well, since the whole NBA Elite 11 fell through.
