As I said on another thread, this smacks of rookie GM/Pres. One looks at the Suns and thinks “they need a big man who can guard the basket and rebound” and they don’t realize that Dampier (like Shaq before him) was a bad fit in EVERY other aspect.
The only way this is a good thing is if: (1) he shuts up and sits the bench most of the timeand likes it or (2) Lopez gets hurt and Dampier is there to step in.
Frankly, he’s more talented than Collins ten-fold, but he’s also more “entitled” to minutes and the Suns are already scrapping for minutes.
Blogging Suns Basketball at Bright Side of the Sun
I'm not so worried about it.
As long as it’s made clear to Damp that he will be the 3rd string center, I think it’s a safe enough move. They won’t be changing the entire makeup of the team like they did with the Shaq trade. If Lopez misses games, I would feel better about Damp sliding into the starting lineup than Dwayne Jones or whoever the hell else.
On the flip, I’m cringing at the thought of him on offense getting in everybody’s way. Seriously, my face is all cringed up as I type this.

Sign him
Why not? He’s worth something, sign him to what he’s worth. Let him be a big body for Robin to bang around with in practice and serve as insurance.
The Suns needed Collins last season in some vital games. If Lopez plays 82 games it will be a minor miracle.

Concur
And if me and Wil the smartest mofos in the room say it, it must be true.
In God we trust, all others must bring data.
Well, if he is signed than it likely means that he and Warrick will take turns in the rotation depending on the match-up until the Suns can trade Warrick which is December I believe. Eric will have to agree to those terms. If not than see ya.
Don't trade Dudley!
thats a total guess on your part, warrick-hater
take your least-favorite in the 10-man rotation and offer him up to share minutes with the new guy. Oy.
Most likely, Dampier would share time with a C, since he’s a C. So if he’s on the floor, its Lopez and/or Frye that lose minutes. Unless Gentry moves Frye to PF (thus sitting Warrick), but then that kills the spacing advantage that Frye brings at PF in the first place… and brings us back to the Shaq days.
Blogging Suns Basketball at Bright Side of the Sun
Why would signing a 7'1 defensive minded C be a bad thing?
Who else do we have to guard LA’s bigs, and assuming Blake Griffin tears it up then for both of the LA teams…
In God we trust, all others must bring data.

Nash is my mancrush. But Dragic is the 2nd coming of Manu Ginobili, which makes him just as tasty.
Doesn’t really fit our game and he takes minutes from players that deserve them.
Don't trade Dudley!
Our game hasn't gotten us to the promise land yet
And it certainly won’t challenge LA this year, come on Warrick or Hedo on Gasol?.. Give me a break he’ll drop 50.
In God we trust, all others must bring data.
No but why not try to get better defensively?
Can you imagine in a world of the Suns where we could match up with LA and hold them under 100 points on a consistent basis, so that we don’t have to shoot 55% from the floor to beat them?..?
Our offense might suffer with Dampier on the floor but if that means we have an anchor on D I’ll take the downgrade on offense.
In God we trust, all others must bring data.
Dampier is not the answer for that. I too want the team to get a bit better defensively and a bit bigger too which is why I thought we should have gone after someone else instead of Warrick or sign Lou or let Lawal and Clark battle for that PF spot out.
Don't trade Dudley!
Sure he’s not the answer, Dwight Howard is the answer. But if we could get 24 quality Kendrick Perkins type minutes from Dampier, I would think we have to go for it.
In God we trust, all others must bring data.
Haha they are definitely amplified by Porter’s system though. I think it just takes dedication to a style of play, Rondo has had a heck of a career with a clogged lane and no jumpshot. Nash could figure it out.
Sliding Lopez to the 4 at times with Hedo at the 3 and Chill at the 2, that wold be a defensive force to be reckoned with. Couldn’t use it all the time but against SA, LA, Houston etc.. it would be great.
In God we trust, all others must bring data.
I don’t know; If they sign Dampier than I expect that it’s because they want him to play meaning somebody will have to be traded.
Could be Chill, could be Dudley, could be Warrick, could be Frye. One of those guys would have to go.
Don't trade Dudley!
It also means that Frye will play the PF.
If Damp isn’t signed its because he wants to play and the Suns only want him to play against certain teams.
Don't trade Dudley!
Speculation overload!

I think regardless they will unload some guys. They have 5 SF’s and can go 11 solid players deep. There’s a point I think with depth that it just becomes too deep to be effective. Players don’t get enough mins to be successful, players can’t expect to play from day to day etc… not the best environment for getting the fullest potential out of your guys…

I agree and I’ve said that sense the very moment we brought Turk, Warrick and Chill in to go with our 7 rotational players. I’d rather we kept Lou instead of signing Warrick because Lou doesn’t need much time to be successful. The guy would be fine with 10-15mpg.

Quentin Richardson declared after a game-winning shot that it "was like Hamlet. It was a suspense thriller, and I killed them at the end." I don't see how that would be a bad pickup
He’d be cheap, he’d be the best defender on our team, he’d have 6 fouls, he’d be able to guard Bynum while Lopez guards Gasol.
I see little downside, he doesn’t have a Shaq like ego where we’d have to give him touches.
In God we trust, all others must bring data.
He would NOT be the best defenisive player on the team.
He’s not even a great defender. He’s just a good defender who is really big.
I didn’t say he was a great defender. But truthfully he’d probably be one of the best on this team.
In God we trust, all others must bring data.
you said he would BE the best defender on the team
and that’s not true. Lopez is better on the interior, and Dudley, Childress and Hill all better on the perimeter.
Dampier would be the best rebounder per minute for sure. But rebounding and defense are two different things.
Blogging Suns Basketball at Bright Side of the Sun
I personally thought a Lawal/Clark battle would have brought the best out of both of them...
as it is, now they no they’ll hardly get any burn…it’s a little tougher for them to develop…
STAT may be gone but the Suns will rise....!
furthermore. . .
His stat line is not that great. He is a vet, which implies there will be less mistakes with him, but he’s getting older. Personally id rather put siler on the nash/dudley diet and a treadmill for half a season and see if we can’t develope some youth.

I’m not claiming to be right and you to be wrong. I’m just predicting and using history as an example. If you look at our 10 rotational players you will see that Warrick and Turk are the two who are most expendable. Although, Turk certainly isn’t very trade-able. What Warrick provides I feel we don’t need it.
Don't trade Dudley!
historically speaking
that is completely untrue

Warrick has higher career averages than Dudley and Dragic. Turkoglu has higher than those 2 plus Childress, Lopez and Frye as well.
I get what you’re saying – that you personally prefer the other 8 over these two. And maybe so do I. But you can’t say that their numbers are inferior or that their skills are unnecessary.
Blogging Suns Basketball at Bright Side of the Sun
Dude, Frye and Dudley ARE the Suns.
I don’t mean that they are the whole team, I mean that they define the team, along with Nash and Hill. They are part of our system, and our identity.
Now, I understand the sentiment that says go traditional, and win a championship. But if that means 82 boring regular season games, I don’t think it’s worth it. Not getting to watch Frye and Dudley in a Suns uniform would hurt me. I want the Suns to win a championship, but I want them to do it playing Suns ball. A traditional lineup may be the way to beat the Lakers, but I don’t think it’s the way to beat Miami. And having a team like the Suns win the title would change basketball for the better. Duds and Frye need to be a part of it.

I love Duds but I think he's going to get shipped (we have 3 SF's ahead of him) how can we NOT be planning on shipping him?
However, I am getting a bit tired of these wussy 7 footers who only shoot jumpers. I mean seriously where did these kids play college ball, what coach would allow this? I like my Centers in the lane big and burly and scaring fools.
In God we trust, all others must bring data.
We have 3 SF's ahead of him?
I see one: Grant Hill.
Steve Nash, the league's MVP, is a longhaired Canadian who spoke out against the war in Iraq and reads The Communist Manifesto. Amare Stoudemire, when asked to comment on a 22-point third quarter against the Kings, said, "I've got a tendency to jump over some guys' heads and throw it down."
Turk and Childress are small forwards that are ahead of him. Guaranteed we won’t be seeing Turk at the 4 much.
In God we trust, all others must bring data.
Love Dudley
But with all the signings there’s no way we keep him. Isn’t his contract over at the end of the season? He will demand more than we’re willing to pay.
In God we trust, all others must bring data.
He will be a restricted free agent next year.
He’s indicated that he wants some of what Frye got – and he’s worth it. 5-6 mil a year for what Dudley brings is a great value.
Auntie Em: Hate you, hate Kansas, taking the dog.
Dorothy
5-6M a year
for a backup SF is not a good deal. If he wants that kind of money, he needs to improve, and perhaps play more minutes.
I remain hopeful the Suns will trade quantity for quality at some point this year.
Not when he's the captain of the second team, inspires the whole team to play
better defense, is the best 3 point shooter in the league, and is improving his mid range game – I thought that’s what we were talking about.
He’s as valuable as Frye, and if we don’t pay him, someone else will.
He’s well worth it.
Auntie Em: Hate you, hate Kansas, taking the dog.
Dorothy
We may not see him there much, but Turk is our starting 4, and Chill is our backup 2
Steve Nash, the league's MVP, is a longhaired Canadian who spoke out against the war in Iraq and reads The Communist Manifesto. Quentin Richardson declared after a game-winning shot that it "was like Hamlet. It was a suspense thriller, and I killed them at the end." Amare Stoudemire, when asked to comment on a 22-point third quarter against the Kings, said, "I've got a tendency to jump over some guys' heads and throw it down."
Not sure why I mentioned Turk, but I believe Warrick’s skills are unnecessary. I would prefer Amundson to have that spot because right now we’ve got enough guys that can score and who need minutes.
Jared Dudley is probably the most tradeable player on this team, but he isn’t the most expendable. He really isn’t. I mean just look at the past two games. The guys has already improved. He’d our leading scorer and he’s the only player to really bring his A game the past two games besides Josh. However, Dudley brings more than Josh does. Chill has yet to show us he can be a reliable shooter or that he is willing to improve and get better. Until than Dudley isn’t expendable. Frye importance is kind of hard to determine When that guy is on were pretty good. In fact even when Amar’e was sucking last season, if Frye was playing well, whether it was hitting threes or crashing the boards we were just as good if Amar’e was dominating.
Don't trade Dudley!
Although, Lou is gone, so I’d like Lawal to get that spot. He’d only require about 10-15mpg and that’s all he would need to be productive and adjust to the NBA over time. It would help fix our minutes problem.
Don't trade Dudley!

Why would Gentry have to make Warrick the 3rd PF?
I think its obvious with the pursuit of Dampier that the management isn’t as stupid as I’ve proclaimed them to be all along, and that Turk will not be playing much PF. So he will either be off the bench and I’m sure he will won’t be happy about that or put Hill at the 2 sometimes to start. Either way you look at it some players are going to be moved this season, which is what Sarver has said all along.
In God we trust, all others must bring data.
I have been really hopeful that Jones or Siler would step up as a viable Robin backup.
I’m pretty sure that either one could meet the Alex criteria of “shuts up and sits the bench most of the time and likes it”, but that doesn’t help if they can’t play. It doesn’t sound like they will get much of a look from here on out. If Dampier can meet that criteria, I don’t hate the idea of having him here, although I don’t get the sense that he will be full of Suns chemistry, and that worries me.
Auntie Em: Hate you, hate Kansas, taking the dog.
Dorothy
+1
totally agreed. Dampier is more talented tenfold than Collins, Jones and Siler put together. However, does he have the demeanor to “fit in”, or will his presence force a return to Shaq-like days?
Blogging Suns Basketball at Bright Side of the Sun
I would think Gentry would have a feel for that (I hope).
He knows this team better than anybody – he spends every minute of practice with them, road trips, etc. He is the alchemist behind the chemistry here, and I don’t believe he would make a panic move.
The reason I am still hopeful about Clark is what I read in practice reports – Gentry said Clark ‘impressed’ in camp. Gentry said he would be very surprised if Clark didn’t crack the rotation sometime this year. Who would know better than Gentry? I believe he was at both of the games, and I think he was paying attention.
When a pitcher goes to spring training, and is adding a pitch, he will throw it 10 times in a row, regardless of the situation – because he’s practicing it. It may get knocked out of the yard 3 of those ten times, may result in a strikeout 4 of those times, and ground balls 3 times. Well, then you know not to throw it on 2-0 counts, or to definitely throw it on 0-2 counts, or whatever – but that’s why it’s called ‘spring training’.
So if Dampier was to come here, I would have to assume that Gentry was in favor of it, and that would make me feel better – that it was necessary.

if Suns shouldn't sign Dampier, Nash should speak up
I was going to say that Steve Nash and Grant Hill should be consulted on whether to sign Eric Dampier, but even that isn’t necessary. They’ll probably both know better than the FO what to do here (certainly better than Lon Babby), and after all his years and all his accomplishments with the Suns, Nash should have enough influence to veto a Dampier signing if he thinks it wouldn’t work out. I suppose he might think it’s not risky enough to bother, though.
As long as I gave in to posting, I’m going to make a rude joke about Erick Dampier. Has anyone else noticed his initials are ED? He could be called that, because the way he’s played during his career, he seems to lack cojones.

I say we look young if we want a big body. Damp is not the kind of impact player that is going to make or break a championship for us. He is a decent vet. The only extra he brings that a young player does not is leadership and fewer mistakes due to his experience. We are not lacking in leadership. We are already a turn over heavy team and gentry is apt to allow young players to play though mistakes. We have a team stacked with the leagues best vets and dripping with leadership. He does not bring anything we need.
I would pass on this one. Why cant the Suns develop young players? It worked for OKC. Its going to work for the grizz this year (probably). We have seen a fair amount of improvement from our young guys (clark excepted).
My main point is that we know what we are getting with Damp. He is serviceable, but he is not for me. . .

That's why we have Garrett Siler
on the roster. But we’re kind of in WIN-NOW mode, so we can’t wait that long.
Then is Damp the man we need?
I just do not see him being our x-factor, or even a suitable backup for RoLo.
by GDD on Oct 8, 2010 3:18 PM MST up reply actions
He's no X-factor
but he’s a suitable backup certainly. And, perhaps more importantly, he’s a nice trade asset. The team as constructed presently will do well to contend til the trade deadline.
Well put jc
I think it can be argued whether or not we should be in win now mode right now. But since it seems to be the case why not sign a nice big bodied vet? I really thought we should have signed J O’Neil at the backup 4, I guess management was hopeful at the time that Turk could produce there… Now it seems like they are reevaluating that decision.
In God we trust, all others must bring data.
J ONeal is not viable backup 4, IMO
he just can’t hardly move anymore. Oh, and he’s always out injured (like right now, before preseason even started)

Just because you say IMO does not mean you’re not attacking… J O’Neil would have been a wonderful pickup, much better than Dampier to provide us size when we need it with some scoring.

A championship contending team seems to think J O’Neil is a viable option as a backup 4 so I’m not sure why we here don’t think so.

ED = Erectile dysfunction. Because Dampier plays as though he lacks balls.
Sorry, I thought I was somewhat clear. Nash, and probably Grant Hill, are surely so influential for their tenure and intelligence that if they don’t think the Suns should sign Erick Dampier, they can probably persuade the FO not to.

It may have been said
But I’ll say it again…Why not have a Dampier in case he is needed? If the price is right and doesn’t expect 15 minutes a game, then why not have him play a role for a team that has a lack of size? SIgning Damp is filling a hole. I don’t understand what is wrong with that. Again, I wouldn’t overpay for him, no one is knocking the guy’s door down, he’s kind of old and all that, but he’s huge and has 6 fouls to give.

Why not have a Dampier in case he is needed?
because he’s not liable to want to ride the bench for 30 games in a row while Lopez is healthy. He will want minutes. If the Suns give him minutes, what will happen? we’ll slow down. We’ll fix one thing and break 2 more.

Who cares if we slow down, as long as we are better defensively and on the glass. This will more than make up for not being able to score 120 a game.
We don’t have a liability in Amare anymore so there’s no reason to rely solely on our offense to carry us. We actually have a squad capable of playing D. So why not change our style of play and play like every other Championship team does…?
In God we trust, all others must bring data.
Because that won't work for this team.
Regardless of what you think we should do, the Suns will not become a defensive, half-court team. I don’t even believe in the style that you say is the only way to win a championship. The teams that win championships are usually the most talented and just happeb to play that style.
The Suns need to play their style. That’s the only way this roster can win. Should we take advantage of our better perimeter defenders and get after the other team and try to force TOs and bad shots? Of course we should. But the overall style of the team shouldn’t and won’t change. Even if the team turns out to be horrible it won’t be because of the system. It will be because the players just don’t play that well together.

I guess if you’re happy getting beat down by the Lakers for the next 10 years until Kobe is 40 then have at it man. As we’ve seen that team is way too big, our cute style is just that. I’d like to win the rebounding battle for once.
In God we trust, all others must bring data.
You can lose the rebounding battle and win the game
But you can’t lose the scoring battle and win.

Can't lose the rebounding battle and still get a ring though.
In God we trust, all others must bring data.
Actually, we made the Lakers adjust to us in the playoffs
Not vice versa.
The thing is, the Lakers have the option to go 2 bigs, or 1 big, and still be effective, due to the versatility of that big Spanish dude.
The last time the Suns tried to mimic their nemesis
It resulted in the Shaq trade, and said nemesis at the time (Spurs) still won easy.
Recent history has shown that the Suns are much, much better when they play the style that comes naturally to them.

Wait a second.
You both are trying to argue that its a bad thing for the Suns to be able to match up defensively with the Lakers? Come on, signing another big guy just gives us more options and the fact that we CAN match up defensively should be a good thing.
In God we trust, all others must bring data.
The problem is to match-up with them in that way means sacrificing some of what we are good at.
The Lakers are better at Lakerball, so we’re not going to beat them that way.
What no Earl barron news
To be honest we need a big man who can give us size know his role on the team and come in cheap.
i doubt that will be Dampier
"Da Suns’ Bench. Call them Victoria’s Secret — all kinds of wonderful support."
Would signing Dampier help us position ourselves for a trade?
If so, then by all means make the signing.
"I’d love to be bigger, but we’re not," Nash said. "So we got to find a way to make our team competitive without having the size."

"I’d love to be bigger, but we’re not," Nash said. "So we got to find a way to make our team competitive without having the size."
yeah in that same article
Nash had some very good comments about the Amare loss. Much more positive toward suns management than a year ago.

He can block shots, bang in the paint, and rebound. I don't see the downside if he's willing to accept a limited role.

Steve Nash, the league's MVP, is a longhaired Canadian who spoke out against the war in Iraq and reads The Communist Manifesto. Quentin Richardson declared after a game-winning shot that it "was like Hamlet. It was a suspense thriller, and I killed them at the end." Amare Stoudemire, when asked to comment on a 22-point third quarter against the Kings, said, "I've got a tendency to jump over some guys' heads and throw it down."
yup
totally….this isn’t Shaq. This isn’t Shaq’s monster ego and it’s not Shaq demanding the ball in the post. Shaq helped the Suns rebounding and interior defense.
Dampier wouldn’t impact the Suns offense any more than Jarron Collins except he would get more put backs and the occasional lob.
I also think that he and Robin can play together for limited minutes in certain situations. Against the Blazers with a front line of Oden, LaMarcus and Batum and especially if they played Camby and Oden together.
We saw with the Kings that they have a lot of size and that was w/o Dalembert. If Daly and Cousins are on the floor together you could counter with Robin and Damp.
And certainly against the Lakers if Bynum and Gasol and Odom are killing it on the glass.
I’m talking about 5 minutes max here but you could impact the game.
Mostly though, he’s an experienced big that can work with Robin and back him up.
I’m 100% behind this, the Suns can afford it. Siler has a long way to go and I like Jones but it’s pretty clear that his upside is limited. He’s a mediocre player at best.
Raising Arizona Sports at SB Nation Arizona twitter: @sethpo
I'm just worried about his attitude
why is he waiting this long to sign? gotta be a combo of playing time, money and a winning team. He won’t get the playing time with the Suns, I don’t think.
Blogging Suns Basketball at Bright Side of the Sun
Well rumors say he's considering US, which means he probably knows the situation.
But he still has to feed his familaaah

Nash is my mancrush. But Dragic is the 2nd coming of Manu Ginobili, which makes him just as tasty.
I should come clean
I don’t hate the Dampier thing as much as I make it sound. I just like having animated discussion with people who are desperate for “size” without considering the consequences on pace and comeraderie and fun and things like that.

I actually wrote the same thing above before I read yours.

i agree with alex
dampier wont really help our defense and on offense it would be 4 on 5, with means the suns wont be anything close to the top offensive team they were last year, which they need to be in order to win games whether the defense has dampier or not
Whats the focus on being a top offensive team, are fantasy leagues at stake here? Wouldn’t it be wonderful for once to be able to rely on our defense, rather than hoping Amare will drop 25 to neutralize Gasol/Duncan’s numbers.
In God we trust, all others must bring data.
yeah because eric dampier is going to let us rely on defense?
im pretty sure your getting this guy confused with dwight howard or somthing
If all he does is body up to Bynum then its worth the signing. Dude still averaged 7.5 boards a game last year in 23 min, that aint bad.
In God we trust, all others must bring data.
sure hes big and can body up on guys like bynum, but is it woth playing him over someone who can do more than that who deserves minutes?
If you think of him as a Lopez injury replacement and a guy that makes sure we never have to see Jones or Siler on the floor, then he’s worth it IMO.

Dampier is only an ok defender
But he’s a fantastic rebounder. His career line is:
ORb%13.0
DReb% 20.2
TReb%16.6
For comparison sake, Amundson was our best rebounder last year, and his career TReb% was 15.9. Amare’s career average is 14.7, and Dennis Rodman’s was 23.4.
My how things have changed...
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Cuban would have to throw in the Dallas Cowboy Cheerleaders, three oil fields and Jason Terry for me to want Dampier

Blogging Suns Basketball at Bright Side of the Sun
so we should stop freaking out after two preseason games and going after crappy thrid string centers and let the team adjust, if theres going to be changes, then get a decent power forward, not another center who wont help anything
Why couldn't Robin play PF
He did at Standford alongside his brother.
In God we trust, all others must bring data.
Unfortunately we don't have to the luxury of having Robin playing PF
Because we don’t have another 7 footer. Plus, he plays like a center. I would love having him and Brook on the Suns. Beast!
Formerly known as NashMV3 of BSotS, if anyone even remembers.
Nash is my mancrush. But Dragic is the 2nd coming of Manu Ginobili, which makes him just as tasty.
because he's not a PF
besides, I’m pretty sure Brook played more the 4-spot than Robin when they were both on the floor together. I watched several Stanford games.
Blogging Suns Basketball at Bright Side of the Sun
Robin took care of the dirty work. Rebounding, defenses, etc., while Brook was allowed to light up the scoreboard and get all the recognition.
It sounds to me like Robin was the C and Brook the PF.
Honestly though, in the situation I doubt roles are clearly defined. The coach didn’t teall Brook, “OK, you’re the PF and Robin is the C.” Having 2 huge interchangeable guys is a big advantage in college, where other teams aren’t as able to exploit that much like a lot of NBA PFs would be able to.
Robin can hit the 12 footer
And is capable of guarding most PFs, so why couldn’t he play alongside Dampier against big teams? Its really cute to have a PF that plays like a SG but realistically that lineup should only be played in spurts.
In God we trust, all others must bring data.
hes the only good true C we’ve had for a while and he did a great job playing c last year, why would we move him??
I agree with Robin to PF
The centers in the West aren’t very good. It’s power forwards like Dirk, Pau and Duncan we need to worry about. Robin’s got the size and athleticism to make things rough for them.
I think Hedo would be pretty good as a slightly undersize passing center, much like Diaw was on our 06 team and like Alvan Adams was his whole career.
by suns68 on Oct 7, 2010 9:54 PM MST via mobile up reply actions
Does all this matter?
It’s like Hill says: people like putting labels on everything. Robin and Steve are pretty much clear-cut in terms of designating their positions. However, they end up guarding different players in the games.
It’s all about matchups. Gentry’s done a lot of cross-matchups and so have other teams that play us. We don’t really have to say we’re sliding one player to the 4 or another player to the 5. If Gentry wants Lopez to guard Dirk, Pau, or Duncan, then that’ll be Robin’s defensive assignment. And Hedo can try bodying up the other team’s center. It doesn’t matter what “position” they are.

The issue is that Dampier
clearly does fit one of those handy labels: center. But really, a number of teams have had large amounts of success playing two “centers.” The phenomenon has happened enough that we have a catch-phrase for it: Twin Towers.
But that isn't necessarily playing 2 Cs.
Andrew Bynum is a true C. Pau Gasol is a true PF who happenes to be 6’11" with very long arms. That’s a big difference from playing Robin and Dampier, 2 true Cs. Guys like Pau don’t grow on trees.
He's listed at 7' even, and we all know listed hieghts are sketchy.
How tall was Charles Barkley listed as?
Lopez can guard the other teams best post player whether its a pf or c, theres no point playing him out of position and screwing up the offense just for the sake of defensive matchups.
dampeir isn’t a starting quality center anyways

damp could be huge
If a certain someone ends up with a hairline foot fracture or bulging disc in his back.
Substitue “huge” with “somewhat useful” and I’m with you.
"We didn’t go for coffee and this kind of stuff."
-El Dragon on his relationship with Sasha Vujacic
somewhat useful
thats probably a better analogy rmason,i can live without him but if rolo misses extended time were f*c$ed
Most offense in the league doesn't start from the post anymore
It starts with a screen set on the perimeter somewhere. To guard that, you need bookends.
You either need two huge guys, so that someone is always clogging up the lane (can’t involve both big men in pick-n-roll defense), or
Or you need two very mobile guys, who can switch out on the guard and then make an adequate recovery.
Very rarely, you find a defensive player who can do both. Andrew Bogut, for example.
its like you've never watched the Suns
this sounds nothing like the Suns offense, yet theyve lead the league in efficiency for 6 straight seasons.
Blogging Suns Basketball at Bright Side of the Sun
right but what I'm saying is that
having those guys on the court would kill the offense, unless you find the perfect two-way players. Unfortunately, you can’t switch out players from offense to defense.
Blogging Suns Basketball at Bright Side of the Sun
Well it depends which direction you go
If you have two mobile guys, that fits very well with what the Suns have done in the past.
Two bigs and this offense can’t co-exist, unless they’re some combination of Dwight Howard, Kevin Garnett, and Andrew Bynum (maybe the new kid in Sacramento, too).
However, you could play two bigs when, say, Steve isn’t on the court, and run an inside out scheme during that time.
I always thought they mismanaged Shaq. I would have played him the first 5 minutes of each quarter and fed him the ball constantly in that time. The rest of the time, get him out of there and let Steve do his thang.
I would've liked to have seen more of Amare' and Shaq together
after Porter’s firing. Those games against the Clippers were a joy to watch.

If we can sweep the Spurs with Jarron Collins starting at C, what harm could a little Damp do? :)

But Jarron Collins got paid very little, didn't he?
Of course, I mean this by NBA standards. I doubt Dampier would sign for the same amount as Jarron Collins.

Jarron got $800K or so - Dampier would reportedly get 2.1 Mil.

Well, it's a lot better than the 10 mil or so he was supposed to make this year.

jarron vs. damp
damp is better hands down he can rebound and block more shots, damp is still good enough to change alot of shots around the basket and those are the kind of plays that dont show up in the box score.and the $800k vs the 2.08 mil to the suns I would think that would be like you or me comparing the price of a name brand item vs a wal-mart brand, too bad those damn clippers grabbed up jarron.
