Phoenix Suns Practice Report: Strength Of Schedule No Excuse, Except When It Is

The Suns practiced again today. It went kind of long. That's about all I can tell you about that.

The after-practice sessions included Lopez, Lawal, Frye and Siler working on individual post offense and defense against each other in a round-robin sort of  fashion under the watchful eye and scratchy voice of Bill Cartwright, with an assist from Mark West.

The one thing that stood out -- aside from Frye participating in the post moves stuff and not his usual three-point shooting drills -- is just how competitive these guys really are. I know it doesn't always come across on TV and from the stands, but watching them battle against each other up-close, you can't help but notice how much effort these players put into their work. Some pro players might sleep-walk through their careers and not work hard, but in my experience, most of them aren't like that.

Practice, people. Practice.

Strength of Schedule

Nobody likes a whiner, but damn, did the the Suns get the shaft from the league in the early season schedule department or what?

According to our old pal John Hollinger (who really should stick to stuff like this and stay away from asking Gregg Popovich obvious questions*), the Suns have the second hardest schedule in the league so far behind only the LA Clippers.

Hollinger's SOS formula: SOS = Season win/loss percentage of team's opponents, expressed as a decimal (e.g., .500)

The Suns' SOS is .680, just behind the 1-8 Clippers (.684) and ahead of the 1-6 Rockets (.630). Anyone want to guess what the Lakers SOS is? .464 which is 21st in the league. By the way, the Warriors (6-2) have an SOS of .404) and the 3-4 Kings have the lowest SOS in the league at .380.

Numbers, they never lie.

And while it is perfectly acceptable for us to whine, bitch and moan about how unfair life and the NBA are, Gentry (at least on the record) wants no part of that.

"We also go back to the old thing -- we're going to play 41 home games and 41 on the road. I don't know if it matters very much when they come; you've got to be prepared."

Gentry said they've switched practice a bit to get the scrimmage done first to try and get Nash more rest, but at the same time, the team needs to work to cut down on the turnovers, which are the thing bugging the coach most right now.

The Suns are 25th in the league in turnover percentage (.155), which is a big reason they are last in the league in defensive efficiency (111.8 point per 100 possessions), despite being a decent defensive team when you watch them play. The bottom line is, if you are going to give up both offensive rebounds and turn the ball over, you are going to give opponents too many good looks. The Suns are also last in opponents eFG% allowed (.525) thanks to that deadly combination.

Gentry might not be an advanced stats guy, but he knows darn well that you are shooting yourself in the foot when you defend the team's attack well only to give them too many second chance opportunities and too many fast break points off turnovers. The rebounding is what it is, but the turnovers can and must be fixed.

A TV reporter asked Gentry again about the Nash trade rumors. He's less than amused at the media types who are making that stuff up.

"I didn't even see a reliable source quoted. I don't know where they get these from. I guess you got to sit around and come up with something to think about. I'm going to start making rumors about TV stations and newspapers and magazines closing down."

* Not to rag on John. Everyone's been on the wrong end of a Popovich question, but damn, right after a loss, you have to know better than to ask him that!

Check this out about our old pal Amare. Fun stuff and a great read. Resist the urge to go over to Posting and Toasting and stick your tongue out and say "ha, ha"

Fixing the Knicks' Pick-and-Roll - Posting and Toasting
Though it's early (and any comparison to a Steve Nash-led team is brutally unfair), a Synergy Sports comparison of the ways Amare scored last year with the Suns to this year with the Knicks are telling: with the Suns last season, Amare scored 19 percent of the time on Post-Ups, 18% of the time as the Pick and Roll man, 15% of the time in Isolations, and 14% of the time through Cuts to the basket.

With the Knicks so far this season, a whopping 35% of his scoring has been through Isolations, 12 % through spot-up jumpers, and only 10 percent of the time has his scoring come as the Pick and Roll man.

our schedule has actually been more difficult than you stated, because of the two b2b's

We faced the Lakers and Memphis on our 2nd night, the Lakers faced Sacramento in their single b2b.

I'm not going to lie

I threw that schedule stuff in there b/c I had nothing else to talk about today…doesn’t change anything but it’s not a topic I think all that much about either. But then again, I don’t flip out after 7 games either.

What I look at w/ this team (any team) is what kind of potential they have based on the players on the roster and how they fit together. The Suns have potential to be good and even very good but of course, there’s also concerns. Hedo at the four is a problem. Robin not being right physically is a concern. Nash’s ability to sustain this level the entire season is a concern.

The schedule doesn’t really concern me much.

the scheduling issue is one of my "conspiracy theories" wrt the NBA

how some teams (lakers cough) seem to be favored by the schedule makers over others. Thing is, a win or a loss vs a division opponent is a much bigger deal than a win or loss over other teams. Moreover, good things generally tend to happen to teams that start well. But I’m not gonna say any more about that.

As i’ve said before, the problem with our team, is that we’re unbalanced. Hedo is a problem, not because he’s a bad player (he’s not), but because his skill set doesn’t complement Robin’s too well, particularly wrt rebounding.

In my mind, players contribute as part of 3 units: front court (5,4 & possibly 3), mid court (4 & 3), back court (2 & 1, possibly 3), so that what you’re looking for wrt stats is the sum contribution from the players in a unit (i.e pts, rebounds, assists, offensive & defensive shooting %, etc…). The idea is that playing together, one player can cover for the other.

In this case, if Robin is not feeling it, he can still help massively by boxing out, screening etc, and helping his front court partner get boards, or make an easier shot. and vice versa.

Being a bit of a skeptic to start...

I’ve been impressed by their play so far, actually.

Hakim’s impressed and I like him coming off the bench as he’s been a big key for that group.

Never particularly was impressed with the move to get Hedo. though.

by TakeFive on Nov 12, 2010 5:12 AM MST up reply actions

Thanks for this

Encouraging to hear about the hard work by the bigs. The schedule will level out in the end but you can’t help wondering if the league is somehow manipulating. The Suns are pretty isolated in the southwest and their road trips are always more gruelling than teams in the east. A bit like NHL teams on the west coast. Have you tracked the turnovers vs. previous years or who’s making them? Steve has always been turnover prone because he has the ball so much and he’s aggressive – but his play has improved a ton lately.

by Van2010 on Nov 11, 2010 3:01 PM MST reply actions

That's a good idea

I usually like to wait at least 10 games in and prefer 20 to do that kind of comparison but maybe if I have time I’ll look at where the turnovers are coming from.

I remember turnovers and a slowed-down Big man

being major issues a year ago. The schedule was a lot easier though, helping the 14-3 start, despite a lot of games on the road.

Frankly, with 3 of 4 big men underperforming, its amazing the the Suns have 3 wins in 7 games considering the teams they’ve played.

In the year of the great porter upheaval

turnovers were way up due to Porter running all these plays, and the players wouldn’t always know where to be, and Nash wouldn’t know where they were. The second part of that is happening now, and I"m sure it’ll come together

In that sense, TO’s are the most fixable problem.. it’s just something that takes time.

That’s the burden of the PG tho..if you throw it to the spot there a guy should be and he aint there, that goes on you. Then everyone says "ZOMG that PG suxorz!!!!! "

I'm all for speed

but if we want to stack up against any team in the west (including Kings) we need to settle our front court issues. it does not matter how much they practice., you cannot run the pick and roll with Hedo and Nash. I think Hedo can work well with Dragic off the bench. Dragic needs someone who can handle the ball in order for him to unleash his inner ball hog (THE DRAGON).. I am more apt to move Childress to Power Forward or Hak. Both of them can finish at the basket. HaK makes much more sense but don’t forget how Marion was able to complete many PNR’s with Nash.

by Wolf Make-Shift on Nov 11, 2010 4:04 PM MST reply actions

Yes,

calm is the key. I have not like the start of this team, so it is good to hear that this team works as hard as it does. Out of of all of the issues Lopez is the biggest concern. Hedo will find some game he has been around long enough. It appears he is far more comfortable with his teammates/staff then he was in Toronto.
Having a injured back is no joke. I guess I have and maybe others did the same that Lopez would bounce back and have no ill effects. I just hope he continues to get stronger and more comfortable on the floor. The guy deserves it.

WIll Hedo be at the 4 on Friday?

I really think changing the 4 is more important than changing the the center position. PnR is Nash’s bread and butter. Without it Nash can’t function properly. The threat of the PnR keeps teams from spreading their defense evenly. Hedo, Dragic, Dudley, Lopez, and Childress will shut down every 2nd unit in the league.

So move Hedo out of the 4 and place Hak into his rightful spot.

Did you listen to the interview with Nash?

“I’ve done everything I possible can for this club, and if that were an eventuality, then we’d move on. There’s no real loyalty in sports.”

I thought that quote was interesting, mainly just the part about loyalty. What exactly did he mean?

And the way he looks and stutters while talking about why he resigned last summer… Gosh it tugged at my heart strings.

I used to be so confident that Nash was happy here and would never want to leave Phoenix. I’m not feeding on the unwarranted trade rumors at all, but I just don’t quite get the same impression about Nash anymore (that he would never leave Phoenix). He tries to be so professional about it, but for some reason he doesn’t seem totally happy.

My response has nothing to do with the actual trade rumors, just his reactions in this interview, and his general subtext lately. Hopefully I’m just overreacting.

I’ll give our current rotation more time, but I really am not liking Hedo as a PF at all. I just feel we would get better if Hedo was put in a position where he can succeed and help out. I know I may get some darts thrown at me for this, but I liked to see Josh Childress play the 4. He has an almost exact similar skill-set to Marion with the exception of the 3-point shooting. He’s the same height, but just a little slimmer. As soon as his finger heals he will be able to finish a lot stronger too. I would consider starting Warrick and having Josh back him up and have Dudz move to backup 2 and Turk to backup 3.

I know Gentry is experimenting with the current rotation, but I hope he doesn’t take too long to mix things up. We have a lot of versatile players and we need to take advantage of that and see what combinations work best.

Don't trade Dudley!

by suns13 on Nov 11, 2010 8:58 PM MST reply actions

So does Warrick, but that doesn’t seem to bother him.

Keep in mind that he’d be going up against the backup 4’s.

PG Nash/Dragic
SG J-Rich/Dudley
SF Hill/Turk
PF Warrick/Chill
C Lopez/Frye

I want to see Gentry experiment with that rotation sometime before the all-star break^.

by Beavis 25 on Nov 11, 2010 9:47 PM MST up reply actions

So yea, our Power-forwards would be undersized, but their skill-sets are better fit for that position than Hedo’s. If we can find a way to balance out this team without making a trade than we get better and good things start happening. Right above was just my ideal for balancing out the team. It’s the best I could think of because we really don’t have many options for the PF position.

Don't trade Dudley!

by Beavis 25 on Nov 11, 2010 9:52 PM MST up reply actions

Chill is not big enough

hes a string bean. If you think we are having trouble with Hedo now, just wait until he is thrown in front of other reams bigs. No, i think the only way we get better from that position is by looking to our youth or trading up.

by GDD on Nov 11, 2010 9:57 PM MST up reply actions

also hes a lot slimmer than Matrix

but longer. still he will get abused by elite power forwards. I love Dr. J Chills game, but his strength is that he has the quicks of other SFs and SGs but has a few more inches all around.

by GDD on Nov 11, 2010 10:01 PM MST up reply actions

J-chill is one of our best perimeter defenders, it seems like that would be wasted if he has to defend big pfs instead

by suns13 on Nov 11, 2010 10:08 PM MST up reply actions

You do have a point there, however, right now Hedo’s talents are being wasted and were paying more cash for him.

I still think it’s something worth to try, but we might just have to make a trade after all.

Don't trade Dudley!

by Beavis 25 on Nov 11, 2010 11:04 PM MST up reply actions

Hedo is bigger and stronger than Chill is, and Chill is a great perimeter defender anyway.

Why make him defend the post?

You’re saying his offensive skills are better sutied to the PF spot. So? A lot of the time the Suns play 4-out anyway with one big (Robin or Hakim) inside and everyone else out on the perimeter spoting up or slashing to the basket.

It appears as if my signature carries a certain weight with the Suns front office. I called for Jared Dudley to be extended, and they obeyed. I'm kind of a big deal. So BSotS, what should I demand next?

by Beavis 25 on Nov 11, 2010 11:02 PM MST up reply actions

Warrick is too small to handle Pau-er forwards too.

The elite bigs will have their way with the Suns D unless
1. Hedo learns how to defend other teams bigs. Its possible, he has the size, strength and mass to, at least, slow down the Paus, Boshes, and Garnetts of the league.

2. We stick Channing in at the starting PF slot. Channing’s post D is coming along very nicely. The negative trade off is that this option leaves a BIG hole in our second unit at the C spot, but i think that Garret Siler is a BIG body, and a capable defender who can fill that hole if we are patient with him. I also suspect that he can be a serviceable offensive option once her learns the game. I really appreciate his work ethic and think it should be rewarded. Now, Hedo can come in at the PF spot and guard second unit PFs, the Suns can play girly zone to minimize his mismatch liability and Hedo can be 2010-2011’s 6th man of the year.
