MVSteve and the Suns Effectively Dethrone the Kings, 103-89
What a game! I don't know about you but that was just what I needed to get my weekend started. First off Captain Obvious would like to give the Sacramento Kings their due - "They are a much improved team and will definitely win some games this year". It's true - Omri Casspi is always a threat, Tyreke Evans is a stat monster, Beno Udrih is an underrated player, Landry always finds his way to the line and gets his points and they have some promise in their young rookie D. Cousins.
But who am I fooling, this was a must-win game with the gloomy week ahead and it was all about the Phoenix Suns dominating the style-war and pushing their pace and game plan on the Kings like the bully pushes the wimp in the lunch line and steals his chocolate milk. Don't make fun of my analogy.. it's nowhere near the level of ridiculousness as some of Scott Williams' broadcast bafooneries during the game. For more on that and what happened tonight, JUMP IT FOOLS!
MVSTEVE. THE END.
(oh and some notes about the other starters.. maybe)
What happened in this game? STEVE NASH happened. You don't have to rely on Landon Donovan's word - Steve is crazy. He shoots better than anyone in the NBA. He passes like no one else. He has eyes in the back of his head. He REBOUNDS. He drives and doesn't care who you are. He eats big men alive with his x-over. He also eats very healthy foods. Enough, just take a look at what he did in the 1st quarter of this game. In 11 minutes he had 10 points, 6 assists, 4 rebounds, 1 steal, and ZERO turnovers.
From start to finish it was the Steve Nash show. We hear Alvin Gentry and Robert Sarver laud him as the Face-of-the-Franchise and tonight he was indeed that in more ways than one. He showed the world... okay at least the Sacramento Kings that he's still the Shiz-Nitz and can take over a game and inspire his team in typical Nash-fashion to play to their fullest potential - or at least with maximum effort.
Nash nearly finished the game with a triple-double. He ended up with 28 points, 7 rebounds, 14 assists, 1 steal, and only 2 turnovers. Let's see... he led the team in points. He led the team in rebounds. He lead the team in assists and OH he only shot 72% from the field. I'll have what he's having - or maybe I won't, I'm not a fan of green tea.
So what was it? Was he motivated by all the trade talk? Is he showcasing his skills for the plethora of teams anxiously drooling over the chance to trade for him? Was he putting up his greatest game of the season in preparation for his retirement tomorrow and entrance in to the Canadian Political realm? Was he motivated by having a brand new baby boy?Was he motivated and fresh because he had 3 days rest? You know what I think? I DON'T CARE. This is Steve Nash an this is what he does. They don't call him 2-time for nothing Chuck. The dude is Merlin of the NBA throwing magic out the back of his Uni while he dribbles and glides up and down the floor.
Oh, Hedo didn't play too well, JRich continues his hot shooting, Grant is THE MAN and is still aggresive as ever on the boards and did a great job defending Tyreke Evans. We'll get to RoLo later. Moving on ->
Only the 2nd time they've scored 30 points in the first quarter this season, the other was last week in the win against the then undefeated Atlanta Hawks.
PHX REBOUNDING
So we know gang rebounding works, and maybe the bigs were doing a good job keeping the Kings bigs away while the little guys got the boards... but was that why between Lopez, Hedo, and Frye we got an amazing.. 9 rebounds? I don't think that was the game plan. Bottom line - we need to get better, and that sounds like a broken record but it's the truth.
Overall the Suns were out-rebounded 50 to 42.. and 21 to 13 in OFFENSIVE REBOUNDS. Gentry commented after the game that THAT was the biggest concern. We can't continue to give teams 2, 3, and often 4 chances on one trip down the floor to score. We were lucky the Kings couldn't capitalize on all their Offensive Rebs... the 4 teams we play this upcoming week undoubtedly will - so hold on to your hats.
Robin Lopez - To start the game Robin looked smooth, concentrated and had some good offensive plays. But 1 rebound in the first half and 3 by the games end, and because he stayed out of foul trouble - he actually played. As we all know Robin likes to play vollyball on the glass... for whatever reason he continues to just bat the ball around even when he has sure position to reach up and pull the ball down. DO IT. DO IT NOW. I don't know if it's mental or what - maybe somebody like Seth with inside info on his practices can explain what the game plan is for Robin to improve his rebounding - but it was terrible tonight. Thank goodness for Nash, JRich and our 47 Small forwards because without their rebounding efforst we would have been emaciated completely on the glass.
Note on his (RoLo) Fouls: 1st foul came halfway through the 3rd quarter! WTF!? That's awesome, and guess what - the foul wasn't even a foul, it was a phantom call on a clear and clean block he had on Carl Landry in the paint.
Channing Frye - lately Channing has been doing an okay job on the glass but tonight he was kind of disappointing, with only 2 rbs.. I'm not going to beat a dead horse. More on Frye's overall game in a sec.
Hedo Turkoglu - Mediocre game for Hedo - he had some iffy fouls but did show some life with 2 assists and hitting some tough clutch-like fade-aways at big moments in the first half... he had 4 rebounds, and I don't know whether to be excited he had that many or disappointed so I'm just going to let that hang.
Moving on ->
TURNOVERS and CAP-I-TAN OBVIOUS
Coming into the game we talked about how both teams were struggling because of turnover woes, and if you remember correctly Captain Obvious accurately deduced that whoever executed their offense better and committed less turnovers would most definitely win this game. Man does that dude know what he's talking about. Both teams actually drastically reduced the amount of turnovers they had been averaging and finished with 11 on both sides of the boxscore. But obviously the Suns imposed their will and executed their offense and thus won the game. The Suns shot 51.9% from the field and destroyed the paint - the Kings only shot 40.9% and looked lost at times. bla bla that's boring. Moving on ->
"An Alligator in a Tank-Top"
Scott Williams' Bafoonery at its finest. Oh could Wil's Cantrellian play-by-play post have come at a better time? Scotty needs to lay off the spoonfuls of peanut butter while he broadcasts :) I mean I've met the dude and he's a great guy but his slurpy speech and down right weird broadcast imagery definitely makes me roll my eyes and want to puke in my mouth... just a little bit. Anywho - he called Kings rook DeMarcus Cousins an "alligator in a tank-top" - LAME. I would just say the fool is a P, I, to the muthableepin' MP. Yeah yeah - he fouled out and he had some rookie mental errors and shows some interesting passion, but he's got moves, long arms, mobility, and strong physical presence. Needless to say if you weren't impressed by his showing today you might have been tuned into the wrong channel. I hope this kid continues to hone his skills at the pace he is with the Westphal and the Kings - you can't ever have enough fun players to watch in the NBA!
Moving on -> now for the good stuff!
BENCH PRESS -
Our bench continues to produce and has consistently all-season proven that they deserve the minutes they get (and maybe should get more at times) and tonight was no different. Though they kind of came out slow in the 2nd period they started to gel and put in a good days work tonight.
Goran Dragic = THE ALLSPARK. This kid has absolutely killed it so far all season and he didn't slow down at all tonight. He only played 13 minutes and though he didn't shoot the greatest he still put up 7 points, 2 rebounds, 1 assist ( a highlight behind the back fastbreak for a JChill AND1 at that), and he led the team with 4 steals. Typical Dragon sighting tonight, he came in he was aggressive, he sparked the bench, he produced highlights and played a good game even when Nash was pressing to get back in the game (which he did, 2 minutes early in the 4th) he stayed relaxed and did what was needed.
Hakim Warrick - He's more comfortable all the time rolling, you can see his confidence grow with every game and this is A GREAT thing for Phoenix fans who were extremely worried about who would fill STAT's inside presense-shoes. Get this - COMING OFF THE BENCH Hakim is close to the #1 spot in the NBA for DUNKS. He goes hard to the hoop and I mean WHAM BAM SLAMMO TIME. I Continue to be surprised by Warrick's post game because it seems like he's showing a different move every night, also his energy and movement is something I can't quite put my finger on.. I want to say 'youthful' or 'active' but those sound weird and don't really express what I was feeling as I watched the game tonight - I'm comparing his activity to Stoudemire's who at times appeared lumbering and pacified. Warrick had a great game and was the bulk scoring effort for the Suns bench tonight with 18.
Channing Frye - Channing started the game well by going to the rim AND hitting a 3, it has seemed like lately he hasn't been able to get both those facets of his game clicking at the same time. He flattened out as the game went on but did hit some critical shots in the 4th to keep the offense flowing. One thing he is doing that I noticed is that he is communicating very well on D - at one point during the game I could hear him telling at at Josh Childress telling him "I'm here, I'm here, I'm here!" so as to let him know he was in position along the bottom of the key if Josh's man were to drive baseline. That's great and all but Channing isn't showing the kind of confidence that he needs in his shot and he wasn't hitting the glass as well as he had in earlier games this season.
Josh Childress - man, this guy is so strong and fast for his size. I'm continually impressed with how fast he is jumping off the floor, driving off the dribble and in the post... or slashing, or running the fast break OR WHATEVER! Dude is a great asset to this team with his AND 1 power (helping fill the void left by STAT) and his fro bringing unprecedented amounts of uber-mojo to the floor every time he's out there. LOVE IT.
Jared Dudley - he had an off night and didn't hit a shot. I'm not worried. It happens.
All in all I am more and more confident in our team. This bench unit is very balanced and I like the variety they throw out every night, they are not always settling for outside jumpers. With guys like Warrick and JChill (and Dragic) there is a better balance of cuts, slashes, hard drives, and jumpers. Good basketball my friends.
BEST POINT GUARD COMBO IN THE NBA?
To end this boring recap (sorry I'm not putting any pics in unless someone can find some good ones, so it's kind of dull) I'll open this up for some interesting discussion - A question was brought up by Tom Chambers and that other dude on the half-time show, do we have the best point guard combo in the NBA right now? What say ye? Who is better and why!?
Thanks for reading - and p.s. - If you eat your McRib with pickles on it... you're disgusting.
Eutychus - out.
[Note by Seth Pollack, 11/12/10 10:17 PM MST ]
Imma let you finish but I just have to add a few words here to this great recap from Eut.
First off, this wasn't a pretty game. The Suns offense was pretty bleh except for Nash who couldn't miss. Early in the game they sagged off him and defended the pick and roll with Beno "No Defense" Udrih only which was just an invitation for Steve to shoot. Once you saw him make a few of those early buckets in the lane you knew it was game on for him.
By the time they adjusted their defense in the second half it was too late. Steve had their number. The rest of the Suns however, didn't do all that much unless Steve created it and served it up on a silver platter. Oh well.
The Kings however, were horrific. They are apparently going threw all kinds of internal issues and strife and they certainly played like it. No energy or effort and yet, here's what Paul Westphal had to say about the game.
"I can't really find a whole lot of fault with our team effort...We missed too much but that's not an effort thing, that's basketball."
I don't know if that's in comparison to other Kings games which have been worse or if he's just trying to avoid more trouble with his already troubled young team but that was not what I would call a good effort. Oh well, their problem, not ours.
Nash bugged out early so no post game quotes from tonight's hero. Hill did his best Nash impression saying, "I played well, eh".
All in all, this was a pretty forgettable game which is fine. A loss would have been hard to swallow but this really should have been a blow out and would have been if anyone other than Nash had shot the ball well.

Question for you Suns fans
How much does Warrick resemble Amare? What are his strengths and weaknesses? I always thought that Nash could make Warrick look really good and so far it looks that way. Nice win tonight, hopefully when our two teams meet (Rockets vs Suns, sometime soon I think) we’ll both be on a nice streak.
"...and Kareem Jackson will fall down..."
Also, Why isn't he starting over Turkoglu?
And, in a very very bias answer to your question, I think Aaron Brooks and Kyle Lowry have the best point guard tandem in the league.
"...and Kareem Jackson will fall down..."
Well,
Ish Smith certainly pwns Matt Janning as the 3rd PG. I really like that kid’s game.
It appears as if my signature carries a certain weight with the Suns front office. I called for Jared Dudley to be extended, and they obeyed. I'm kind of a big deal. So BSotS, what should I demand next?
EXTEND JASON RICHARDSON!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I like the rockets
and i like brooks but the best point guard tandem in the league is (jn my equally biased opinion) Nash and_______
thanks for the input Bonzo, I hope Yao is O.K. hope you’ll be here to mix it up when the Suns play the Rockets
"I feel younger almost every year. I feel like I'm getting better every year. I feel like the season gets easier for me the last two years." Steve Nash
Actually, Brooks and Lowry is a great rotation. They are both very effective and bring different things to the table. He also said in a “very bias[ed] answer,” meaning he wasn’t trying to say we are all wrong an he is right.

Your joking right?
Lowry and Brooks, first off Lowry doesn’t even start. And second here are some pairs:
Rondo and Allen
Curry and Ellis.
Nash and J-RIch
Bibby and Joe Johnson
Maybe Jennings and Salmons
Roy and Miller
And you could say Wall and Hinrich.
he said PG tandem
which inherently means the starter and the backup at the PG position

Williams, Rondo, Paul and Nash
are pretty much better on their own than most other tandems. I quite like the Rondo/Robinson/West backups on the celtics though, if i’m choosing one other than Nash/Dragic.
I think Warrick has a better basket ball IQ than Amare. They both like to finish strong around the rim. I have more faith in Amares mid range game then I do Warricks, but he’s been showing some range in some recent games, no idea if those will keep falling though.
I think they are not starting Warrick still because they want to give Turk a fair chance to get used to the system early on. Better to experiment early in the season rather than the end of the season. But in all reality does it matter who starts? If you haven’t noticed with this team it doesn’t mean much at all because who ever is playing well in the game usually ends up finishing the game out. Besides Dragic and Warrick are gelling pretty well too : )
Great game all the way around
Dan Marino (13) and Steve Nash (13) will go down in history as being the greatest passers to never win the last game of the season.
Steve is the shizzy,
Rebounding sucks, Goran is the shizzy apparent, and the bitter, immature side of me must point out that KLove had a really, really “lucky” game tonight against Amare.

I think Amare actually believed he would be just as successful in NY in terms of wins/losses. Same with Marion.

I agree
He didn’t realize how good he had it, and thought the Suns success was all because of him. Happens all the time with players looking for greener pastures.
BTW, over at Posting and Toasting, they aren’t going after Amare as much as they are going after D’Antoni, and they are going after him hard. Something tells me Amare won’t have his back either.

Let’s talk about the greatest current Sun, new daddy Steve Nash. Welcome to the world his son, Matteo Joel Nash, weighing in at 7 lbs, 7 oz.

As far as best PG combo...
You could make an argument that Russell Westbrook and Eric Maynor could get there. Jason Kidd and JJ Barea are showing their chops this season. Chauncey Billups and Ty Lawson proved effective against the Lakers.
There are a lot of good PG combos out there that can prove to be lethal at times, but on a consistent basis, I think you have to give the cake to Nash and Dragic. They are both very different players with different styles of play, and having that keeps defenses off balance. They have to switch up their defensive sets every time one or the other enters the game.
Also, if Derrick Rose had a better backup than CJ Watson (who’s not terrible, but he’s not close to Dragic level), I think they would take it. But, he doesn’t, so they don’t.

Best point guard situation is Chris Paul and whoever backs him up. Westbrook is a really good young player but no better than Rose and Maynor is not better than CJ Watson.
Wait a second Trev....
If the Bulls had a better backup PG they’d have the best combo? Mind blown.
If the Hornets had John Stockton they’d have the best. Or if the Jazz had 1950s Bob Cousy.

Haha, you know what I mean.
I’m not saying if they have some star bench performer. But CJ Watson is pretty pedestrian. Has some decent games at times, but largely just holds the place until Rose comes back in.
Dragic, on the other hand, comes in and can take a game over. Until I see that from any of the other backups, they’re all trailing Goran.

Good win, though.
A much needed one to bring us to 4-4. And, if anyone’s keeping track, the beloved/hated Heat are 5-4. How does our 4-4 feel now, boys and girls?
Despite the win, the offense looked horrible at times. Straight up terrible. Fortunately, the Kings’ was worse, and I don’t think we’ll have a stretch like from 9:30(ish) to 8:00 left in the fourth again. That was terrible, terrible basketball.

One more note...
It’s good to see Nash and Warrick finally connecting. I was worried it was largely going to be a Dragic/Warrick combo (which isn’t bad), but having Nash and Dragic feeding the Dunkmaster? Yes. Please.

How's this for a stat
not to rain on the parade…
Hedo, Warrick, Lopez and Frye combined for 13 rebounds.
Warrick love is nice. He’s a good offensive player but there’s a reason he’s not an NBA starter. He’s too small to play the four. Look at his legs sometime.

although
the problem is compounded by Robin’s inability to elevate and move. There’s a lot of ball that he at least would have tipped away and prevented from being offensive rebounds that he simply can’t get to right now….
If (hopefully soon) he gets back to where he was physically, the Suns won’t have nearly as big of an issue on the glass.

He looked pretty good during the preseason from what I saw.
I didn’t see as much running the floor and elevating, but his post game looked pretty good. He was scoring efficiently and pulling in the boards. I don’t even see that anymore. What is the difference between the preseason and now (other than it being the preseason)?

Nice win
We didn’t actually shoot the ball that well, as only nash was really effective from outside, and had a very below average 4 3’s. It was pretty much either Nash shooting or setting people up tonight.
Also there were some very bad rebounding moments in the 2nd quarter particularly. They are a much physically stronger team than us with Evans, Landry, Cousins and Dalembert so that was the source of the problem.
But Nash was brilliant and we got some good/great stuff from Warrick and Chill. And the offensive execution and overall play when Nash came back with 830 in the 4th was fantastic. Frye hitting that 3 really seemed to light the spark.
That 5 of Nash, Jrich, Chill, Hakim and Frye is a very nice unit, with a ton of scoring options and a very nice swarming D. That is a pretty great unit for the end of most games. And I continue to be impressed with how many different ways we can score the ball and that unit really showed it.
So its a good win. I am not really worried about Hedo. He is playing a bit passive but had some good moments and a few very tough calls against him. He seems less reluctant to take the ball to the hole than he did even earlier in the season. But it takes a long time for guys to adjust to a new team and a new system. We all remember how bad Jrich was for pretty much his first year plus and for another e.g. look at how Richard Jeff s@@@ed last year and has been a game changer for the spurs this year. And look at Grant Hill’s transformation from year 1. So i am confident he’ll figure it out. He is clearly trying which is important. What I notice like with Jrich is that with a new team the bad habits are a bit hard to die. So just like Jrich was overly aggressive when he came here, and didn’t let the game come to him, (his problem throughout his career till that time) Turk is reverting to his weakness which is playing a bit too passively. So I think he will be fine.
We’re coming along.
One last thought/question, where would we be if we had Milsap or Love on this team or if we hadn’t lost the lottery and had picked up Horford instead of Atlanta getting him?
is there anyway we
can get some love… i mean k love of course.. and what would it take..
btw. nice win. was an awesome way to end my shitty week….

Steve Nash, the league's MVP, is a longhaired Canadian who spoke out against the war in Iraq and reads The Communist Manifesto. Amare Stoudemire, when asked to comment on a 22-point third quarter against the Kings, said, "I've got a tendency to jump over some guys' heads and throw it down."
My observations...
First, I thought it was absolutely imperative that we got the win tonight before heading into an extremely harsh 4-game set.
Thankfully, we did just that. Here are some of the biggest reasons I think we were able to do so:
1. MVSteve came to play! – Putting up a ridiculous stat line that most would assume could only come from a point guard in the prime of his career, Mr. Nash quieted his doubters with arguably one of the most effective games of his career, excelling in all areas of his game and limiting his turnovers to only two.
2. Warrick is finding his rhythm – Another big reason for why Steve seemed to be so effective in creating tonight was because of his ability to finally establish a rhythm with someone in the P&R. Since the loss of Amare, Nash has been searching for the replacement. Robin was supposed to be that guy but so far it hasn’t worked, and Hedo is better with the ball in his hand or as a shooter. But thankfully, we still have another guy who seems more than willing to fill those shoes. Warrick has come on strong this season, leading the entire league in dunks and coming in 3rd in FG% as well…mostly due to his P&R game with Nash and Dragic. Tonight that connection seemed to flow more easily than ever, and this is a great sign of things to come!
3. Robin played ok – Not a stellar game from Robin by any means, but he didn’t look as out of place or frustrated tonight. He made it all the way until the 3rd quarter before picking up his first and ONLY foul! Robin only played 19 minutes and it seems Frye is still closing out games, but at least he was able to contribute tonight and stay out of foul trouble…Keep working Robin, we still believe in you!
4. J-Chill – Childress is one of those players who you may not notice as much over the course of a game, but man does he make a difference! Even though he has been limited by the splint on his right (shooting) hand, he has found ways to contribute and help in every game. Tonight was one of his best so far this season, posting 10pts, 4rbs, 1stl, 1ast. And of course, this doesn’t account for his defense, which has been his best contribution of all along with his energy.
Goran also had a nice stint in the second half, but it wasn’t a great shooting night for him, and he also struggled a bit in the fourth quarter. Likewise, Dudley had a very rare goose-egg on the night going 0-5…don’t expect that to happen again anytime soon. Anyway, it was a good team effort tonight and we seem to be finding our way…Let’s see if we can build on this and begin to show what we are really capable of!
Thoughts on Channing
The dude is my surname-sake (I’m a Chris, he’s a Channing), but the similarities don’t end there – I have a 10 week old baby boy, and Channing’s little dude must be about 7 weeks by now? Well, let me tell you, for all those who haven’t had a newborn around the house before, it is really really really tiring. The fact that Channing kicked off his season with the birth of a baby in his life and household could definitely be disrupting his rhythm, mainly due to sleep deprivation and a general turning upside down of one’s life.
Now did, someone say that Steve’s got a new baby boy? Guess that throw’s my theory out the window!
But still, it’s a thought. By January, I predict Channing will be rocking full steam.

Agreed with Seth
Very forgettable win…but you know what? Forgettable wins are awesome and the Suns had like 25 of them last year. Robin Lopez is playing like a 45 year old Robert Parish without the moves (that means not good).

A win is a win.
We have to get these games against inferior teams, especially at home. A reprieve from the tough schedule. Rebounding like this will kill us on most nights. Nash was nashing at an amazing level. Got dead legs? Didn’t think so. Chill is v. chill to watch. Rolo looked OK briefly but seems too intent on avoiding contact and fouls. Turk is starting to figure it out. As Gentry said, fewer turnovers makes good things happen. Must hurt Kobe!
I blame Nash for the lack of offensive rebounds
Guy goes out there and takes a ton of shots and makes almost every one of them. And of course you can’t rebound off a made basket.
Darn selfish if you ast me.
So let’s get out there and throw some bricks so we can boost the vital OR statistical category.

good point..
though as I am always interested in promoting a fascetious and somewhat sarcastic post and turning it into something serious, the suns are actually 6th in offensive rebounds. Its the defensive boards that are the problem.
That huge gap in the paint is getting bigger and bigger. Nash’s arms will fall off by seasons end with all the shots he has taken to keep the Suns competitive

I'm not generally a fan of the woulda/coulda/shoulda game
The Suns still have a glaring hole at PF, and the T-Wolves got Michael Beasley from the Heat for a mere two 2nd round draft picks. Beasley’s playing SF for the Wolves, but he can play PF, certainly moreseo than Turk. Beasley’s a 21 year old who’s talented enough that he was the #2 overall pick in the draft, and is averaging 20 points and 5 rebounds so far this season. Oh yeah, and his salary is less than half of Turk’s.
I know he has a bit of a checkered past, but what has he really done that’s so bad? Caught smoking weed? At age 21, is he just in need of some growing up, or did the Suns not even consider him because he’s a “bad guy”? Did we miss an opportunity here?

My gut says no - lets see what he does later in the season, when things aren't going so good.
For me, it’s still a chemistry issue. It does no good if a player is a beast, but brings the rest of the team down.

He just put up 77 in his last 2 games.
That will help your average a bit. Other than that he’s been the same old Beasley: inconsistent with questionable shot selection. Take a look at his game logs.

I know it's not a big deal in the east bay...
Where cigarettes are virtually banned while the odor of burning cannabis wafts out of every coffeehouse. :)
It does give us something of a disadvantage, but with our team history of the drug scandal, we have to stay at zero tolerance.
I remember it was sad to say goodbye to Clifford Robinson, who could really ball, when he got tagged for the demon weed. But it’s an unbreakable team rule and it’s got to stay that way.

The problem with Beasley is not that he smoked pot.
It’s that he looked and played like he just had a big spliff right before he came off the bench. Maybe not this year, though.
Maybe we did make a mistake – but I still think, given what we knew at the time, it was a big risk to our chemistry.

Would've concerned me, definitely
Caused me to write him off? Not so sure. There is risk involved with every player, and we shouldn’t kid ourselves that all of these guys are choirboys, though Nash and Hill probably truly are, and Matt Janning looks like he still sings in his HS choir. Ron Artest is a walking bright red flag with a rap sheet longer than I can detail here, and he made the season-deciding play against us last year. That risk-reward is a delicate balance. I’m not saying I know the answer here, but I’m wondering if the Suns even considered Beasley at all.

I take what I said back
from a previous post, when I said that Warrick should start over Hedo. I think I like Hak’s energy off the bunch giving us that much needed spark that is fed by Dragic. 18 pts off the bench? Dude went beast mode.
its not that big of a deal, imho
Warrick is getting about the same PT, and is getting some/almost as many quality minutes. Warrick will probably get more PT as the season progresses, but that will be something to monitor over the years. Can you have a guy making 10 mil playing only 25 mins and not eventually have a problem?
While I am on the subject, another PT issue is Dragic/Dudley. Those guys need a chance to be a bit more effective and need more PT. Where is that coming from?
yup...doesn't matter who starts
I had this conversation w/ some of the guys in the media room before the game. I really don’t think it matters much who starts. The Suns aren’t struggling early in games and Gentry is going to go w/ the hot hand and match ups to close. One of the better lineups he’s used was to close the Grizzlies game (at home) with Warrick and Hedo on the floor together w/ Frye, Nash and JRich. Hill was 1-9 in that game and got benched…until it was time for the sideline inbound pass!!
Gentry talks about starting Warrick to help Hedo avoid foul trouble early and avoid him having to bang w/ these monster PF’s. That could be coach-talk and spin but it makes sense to me. I don’t think Hedo’s played poorly. He was 3-6 last night and really never touched the ball much b/c Nash was so open.
When Warrick is starting, teams are going to go right at him in the post as well and it won’t be long before people are complaining about his defense and rebounding. “Sure, he can dunk but can he play both ends?”

yup
totally agreed..
And when frye and Lopez start to play a bit better, the rebounding will be less of a problem and so the frantic concerns about Turk will disappear a bit.
I agree that he was ok last night and while a mild disappointment overall has not really been terrible. In another post, i gave as an example Jrich and Richard Jefferson, as two veteran guys who were moved and looked like S## in year 1, but then became "indispensible" in year 2.
He is another guy who can create his own shot, passes well and brings a decent IQ to the floor. And as he gels and becomes more aggressive will open things up for others. So I think he is ok, and can be a bit of a "Dirk lite" when he really gels.
The other thing is that the suns do still have a lot of cap room and TE’s to consider making a move to shore up the 4 spot. I noticed that the suns are 20th in overall salaries this year which is actually kind of amazing for a contending team. I don’t think Sarver will be reluctant to spend on a guy in February if rebounding continues to be the problem it is at the moment.
And so all in all, we can have
Amare lite = Warick
Dirk Lite = Hedo
Mattix lite = Childress
Childress actually has the potential to be better than Matrix. He has a much better offensive game (moves better, better ball handler, much better creating his own shot) and is a better (At least equal) leaper to Shawn M. The thing is can he develop into the same kind of aggressive ball hawking rebound devouring/defensive stalwart that Matrix could be, or does he lack the aggressiveness?
He's just smaller
Shawn was a 3/4. Chill is a 2/3. But yes, a lot of the same

yes but
according to nba stats, Chill is actually taller, 6’8 (chill) vs. 6’7 (marion). So despite what they called themselves Chill may actually be better suited to the 3/4 than we think.
Now I do know that those stats are often fudged. Can you add any color there?
I am not sure about the leapeing ability either...
Matrix not only had freakish ups, but he was one of the quickest leapest in the NBA…JChill is a great athlete but he wasn’t in Marion’s (prime Marion)league as fact as leaping…
STAT may be gone but the Suns will rise....!
Shawn was and is stronger than Josh. Josh is a bit taller (especially if you count the fro) but he’s a twig. Shawn knew how to use his body to hold of bigger guys. Josh is a great wing rebounder, but there’s a difference in rebounding in the post and from the wing.
It appears as if my signature carries a certain weight with the Suns front office. I called for Jared Dudley to be extended, and they obeyed. I'm kind of a big deal. So BSotS, what should I demand next?
