Turk for Jamison?

I don't want to be the guy that writes his first post ever on the site and its about a TradeChecker result but...

I have been following the trade scenarios with great interest but I was wondering why I haven't seen one that goes...

Hedo Turkoglu and Earl Clark for Antawn Jamison.

Would it be such a bad idea? I know Jamison is having issues with his knee right now, but it could give us some bulk down low and he has range to the 3 point line, if needed. Plus, I know Cleveland is looking for some stability at the 3 spot, so it might benefit them too. Adding Clark would match up the salaries to the requisite percentage and the opportunity to develop Clark behind Hickson might be an incentive for the Cavs to take on the extra years Hedo has on his contract versus Jamison's.

Yes, Jamison is older than Hedo, but younger than the Suns own elder statesmen. If it doesn't work out, Jamison's contract would expire right around the time Nash, Grant and maybe Jason would end their tours with the Suns and we can go full on with a youth movement then. If it does work out, we can add Jamison to Grant, Steve and Jason as veterans who are making one last push for a title before they call it a day. Picks and cash can change hands somewhere around there, too.

I was curious what you guys thought about whether it could improve the team or, for the insiders, whether this scenario has been talked about. Like I said, the whole posting thing is new to me and the only thing I know for sure was that it works in the TradeChecker and it worked pretty well for me in NBA 2K11! Well, so far, anyway.

Let me know what you guys think. :) Love the site by the way. First thing I check when I'm on work avoidance mode ( which is most of the time).

Why would Cleveland do this deal? “It might benefit them” isn’t enough. Do people really think every single other front office is run by drunk morons waiting to get ripped off by the Suns?

Let’s set up a deal with them…

Jamison cant really defend the paint.

we need an inside presence, a rebounder, a defender, a little-bit-of-everything guy . like LOU with an offensive prowess. only if he had it. errrr.

by shawndy on Nov 25, 2010 3:56 AM MST reply actions

Jamison can rebound

So even though he’s a lousy defender, he would still instantly improve our “defense” just by not giving up so many O-Boards.

by jc79 on Nov 25, 2010 7:30 PM MST up reply actions

Except the Cavs wouldn't do this

They’re trying to get rid of Jamison’s contract so they can rebuild. Tying up more money for a longer period of time is the opposite of that.

by jc79 on Nov 25, 2010 7:31 PM MST up reply actions

i dont like Jamison.

KEVIN LOVE . KEVIN LOVE. who wouldn’t love that guy? can we rather have him on our team?

by shawndy on Nov 26, 2010 2:16 AM MST up reply actions

Everyone’s going to want him when he becomes a FA.

by 8472species on Nov 27, 2010 9:54 PM MST up reply actions

I'd have Lou back in a heartbeat. :)

I was a fan of his since I saw him in a Sixers pre-season game a year before signing with the Suns. I was really happy when we signed him. I think the 2nd unit misses him too. Funny enough, the other guy I was liking in a random preseason game a few years back was Dwayne Jones and I remember hoping the Suns sign him. I guess its telling because I like players like that, for some reason: Jake Voskuhl, Andrew DeClerq, Bo Outlaw…

by rocketdog6 on Nov 25, 2010 10:29 PM MST up reply actions

Until now, I thought I was the only person who liked Jake Voskuhl.

by 8472species on Nov 27, 2010 9:55 PM MST up reply actions

yeah, yeah...

I don’t care about the Voskuhls, thank you. All I really remember is that in Game 4 of the 2003 first-round series against the Spurs, Voskuhl received an inbound pass from Penny Hardaway under the basket, and made a short hook shot that won the game.

by 8472species on Nov 28, 2010 8:58 AM MST up reply actions

if only we could have lou back

just maybe we’re not talking about players we can add for our team because we are contented.
if only lou was here, maybe we’re not having this fanpost anymore. too sad we let him go. :(

by shawndy on Nov 26, 2010 2:15 AM MST up reply actions

I like this trade

I don’t think Cleveland would do this without AT LEAST getting a 1st-rounder in return. Trades have to be as fair as possible for both teams, and right now, it helps the Suns a lot more than it helps the Cavs. That being said, I wouldn’t trade for Antawn Jamison if I had to give up a first rounder. Even if he gets a lot better with the Suns, he’s what, 36? I’d rather have a hit-and-miss prospect like Clark in the 10 and below picks, because I know that eventually it will work out (See: Bryant, Rondo, Arenas)

by ryansunsfan on Nov 25, 2010 10:07 PM MST reply actions

that would certainly be the dillemma in this scenario

shore up the 4 for a push now while the vets are around and sacrifice one prospect or hold on to Clark as long as we can and, despite not extending him, have him be a part of our future. I think a first rounder is not an option for the Suns, as well. We could (maybe) still find a solid 4 or a 5 that can push Lopez to the bench or a 1 that can back up Goran when Nash retires (or compete with him for the starter’s nod) … But the only way the Cavs would even consider it is if they got a prospect in return with Hedo’s heavy contract.

Anyway, while Hedo remains, I’ll root for him. :)

by rocketdog6 on Nov 25, 2010 10:20 PM MST up reply actions

That's what I was thinking, too

I was hoping we could add a 4 while subtracting one of our 3s to ease the logjam. I guess the value of Turkoglu to the team will be greater after Hill retires so we can slot him in as a starter at the small forward and we can have either a Warrick/Lawal combo at the 4 or find someone to put there for the MLE or the trade exception or something. Thanks, jc. :)

I think JRich for Jamison was brought up

In which case no thanks would be the best answer.

But Hedo for Jamison? I like.

to get hedo off the books

Im almost certain the suns will have to throw in q first rounder in any deal, may be worth it if the right deal comes along

by stevedavis_ on Nov 27, 2010 10:49 AM MST reply actions

How about this...

http://games.espn.go.com/nba/tradeMachine

We trade Richardson, Clark,. part of Amare’s TE and a 1st rounder for Javale McGee and Gilbert Arenas…

I know, the gilbert contract is horrible but he is young and may be motivated in a young system plus we have Nash and Hill to keep him in check but the real winner of this trade is McGee…the dude is a monster. His scoring is developing, he can rebounding and block shots like nobodies business. I know Wash would prefer not to get rid of him but that would be part of the price they pay for getting rid of Arenas. Plus, with J-Rich’s expiring deal and a first rounder it would ease the pain of losing McGee.

turk

you made me try it in trade machine.

How about this then:
Richardson and Turk for McGee, Arenas and filler (K.Seraphin) + 2 second rounders or something.

That’s pretty close to a good deal for all. Babby needs to get his arse on the phone or twitter or whatever with Washington.

Turk and Richardson fit fine in Washington and they get rid of Arenas to restart with Wall.

Suns will be more than solid with McGee/Lopez holding down the C spot and Arenas/JChill can hold down SG.

Suns even lose some Salary in the long run, kind of since they’ll probably end up overpaying 30 something year old Richarson out of sentiment and Ancient Turk’s got forever left on his contract. I’m not on the JRich bandwagon after watching Lebron block his silly 360 dunk attempt a couple years ago and another dunk, failure to block out Artest in the WCF last year etc.

Washington gets some quality players they can let Richardson expire if they want, Turk is a quality 3 man if he gets solid starters minutes and isn’t playing at the position behind grant hill. (he’s turrible as a 4 man as we’ve seen). And they will have to be happy to be Arenasless.

by eagleheart on Nov 28, 2010 6:55 AM MST up reply actions

McGee and Arenas?

I floated this idea last week, and it was soundly poo-poo’ed by one and all. Don’t tell me it’s gaining traction now.

And I doubt you would get to put Turk’s contract into that deal. You would hopefully move 2 wings, thereby moving Turk to SF, where he’s actually good.

by jc79 on Nov 28, 2010 9:45 AM MST up reply actions

sf

While that sounds good in theory, there is a certain mr. grant “my favorite basketball player ever according to a quote by Alvin Gentry” manning the 3 and he’s going to get teh lion’s share of the minutes there.

by eagleheart on Nov 28, 2010 3:38 PM MST up reply actions

We didn't give Amare a fully guaranteed contract because we were worried about his injuries

With that in mind….why would we trade for Arenas?

dump

To get better balance and player when healthy and dump Turk and Qrich’s contracts

by eagleheart on Nov 29, 2010 8:57 AM MST up reply actions

Few things wrong with that IMO

1) Jason Richardson is an expiring, so we don’t need to “dump” his contract
2) Trading Hedo for Arenas does not alleviate any log jam at all. One wing for another.
3) Arenas’s contract is the worst contract in the NBA right now….so trading Hedo’s contract for Gil’s is not an improvement.

I admit, the idea of a Nash/Gilbert backcourt is very exciting, but A)not at that money, B)not after Gil’s injuries, and C)not after Gil’s problems.

McGee, however, is someone worth thinking about pursuing, even though Washington won’t give him up very easily at all.

Steve Nash, the league's MVP, is a longhaired Canadian who spoke out against the war in Iraq and reads The Communist Manifesto. Quentin Richardson declared after a game-winning shot that it "was like Hamlet. It was a suspense thriller, and I killed them at the end." by rsavaj on Nov 29, 2010 11:16 AM MST up reply actions

Oh, and if you start Gilbert at the 2, our backcourt defense gets even worse

And finally….Gilbert is a high-usage player. Let’s see how he does with Wall before we assume he can just become an effective off-ball player.

benefits

Gil is 6’4" he can play the 2. And JChill at 6’9 backing him up we would be fine at the 2 on an night when opposing teams had a giant 2 (uh none I can think of). Gil has proven he can hit and isn’t scared to take the big shots. McGee, Baron, Lopez > Lopez and Baron by far.

It’s a “fair” trade both teams would see it as gaining something meaningful and giving up something meaningful.

by eagleheart on Nov 30, 2010 5:53 AM MST up reply actions

Chilly is not 6'9

And as far as it being a “fair” trade for Washington, let’s just look at some feedback from WAS fans I proposed this to for the lulz:

I think many people from outside the area greatly overestimate how much we want to dump Arenas.
Torches and pitchforks would be the response of a lot of Wizards fans. They don’t have to dump Gil, and they’re certainly not going to use McGee to do so.
Especially when this “dump” involves the Wizards taking back $60M in salary. Sorry, the Wizards aren’t going to give up McGee and Gil just to save $20M in 2014. It’s laughably bad. I wouldn’t do it even if we didn’t have to include McGee. THAT’S how bad it is.

Hedo is essentially untradeable

Quentin Richardson declared after a game-winning shot that it "was like Hamlet. It was a suspense thriller, and I killed them at the end." by rsavaj on Nov 30, 2010 11:30 AM MST up reply actions

Untradeable

Hedo is not untradeable. Sarver just traded FOR him after all the terrible press he got for last year. Shaq and his 20m contract was thought to be untradeable and the suns traded for him and then traded him away after he was untradeable from us.

by eagleheart on Nov 30, 2010 3:11 PM MST up reply actions

trading partners

The cavs and bobcats have been trading buddies in the past. New Orleans seems to be in tradehappy mode as well now. Rockets might trade something to shake things up since they are sucking.

by eagleheart on Nov 30, 2010 3:15 PM MST up reply actions

I think that's the reason we got so much flak for the trade.

We traded for someone that the entire league thought was immovable. That doesn’t make the rest of the league look bad, you know what I’m saying?

I mean, Hedo’s helping us right now, but I don’t see anybody who would take him in a deal that improves us.

Maybe the fans don't want to dump Arenas

but MANAGEMENT does. I mean, it’s the NBA anything can happen but I just don’t see a team pulling a trigger on Arenas alone with the salary he is making. Washington would have to part ways with Blatche or McGee to even make it happen or else they’re stuck with for 3 more years after this one.

My idea I floated out there didn’t involved Hedo. You guys are right, the man is untradeable.

It was J-Rich+E.Clark/Draft Picks for Arenas/McGee…While, I don’t think Washington would do it…they would be tempted.

Pros:
1. Gain a ton of cap space going into next season
2. If they decide to keep Richardson, they could have a viable wingmate for Wall who is a classy, veteran guy that Wall could learn from.
3. Earl Clark…Lots of talent there, maybe a change of scenery, and solid playing time could unleash his true potential.
4. Draft picks-Even with this trade, The Suns would be clinging for a low playoff seed, with all of the moving parts they could be lottery bond. With Howard coming off books, along with trading Arenas the team could pretty much build rebuild itself in one year in the mold of John Wall

Cons:
1. Losing McGee

I have no idea why I’m trying to psyche myself up for a trade that is never going to happen. I suppose I don’t have much optimism for this year’s squad….It’s going to be a LONNNGGGG season.

Management just shot down a rumor

that they were talking trade for Arenas with the Magic, and called Arenas “the best player on our team right now.”

by jc79 on Dec 2, 2010 4:38 PM MST up reply actions

Forget Hedo in the deal

That’s not happening. You would be trading Richardson and Dudley/Childress to make this work.

Also, McGee has made himself untouchable in the week and a half since I originally suggested the idea by going out and having a couple 20/15 games.

by jc79 on Nov 30, 2010 8:49 PM MST up reply actions

If you were willing to just get Arenas

You could maybe do Hedo + Chilly for him. I would do that deal, but I doubt all of you would.

Additionally if Nashie gets hurt, we could use Gil as backup to Dragic instead of Jared Dudley.
