Suns Beat Clippers In Bleh Game, 116-108
Anyone feel good about that win? Probably not. The Suns locker room certainly wasn't a jubilant, happy place. This team acted like they understood very well that the way they played tonight, especially on the defensive end, isn't good enough to beat many teams.
The Clippers are talented but young team and they played the night before. Even so, they closed a 25 point first quarter lead down to within 4 points in the third quarter. The Clips out-scored the Suns 27-18 in the fourth -- that's winning time and the Suns held on but didn't feel good about it.
"We had opportunities to step on them in the second quarter and we just didn't do it," Steve Nash said.
On the positive side of things, Jason Richardson shot the ball very well tonight, 12-19 and 5-8 from three which gave him 29 points. Channing Frye's defense and overall level of play continues to improve. He's scoring inside more and playing with energy and effort in the paint. He finished with 16 points and 5 rebounds but those numbers don't do justice to what he has been giving the team this season.
Hedo Turkoglu only played 15 minutes and didn't score. He was frustrated with picking up two quick fouls and then sitting for a long time and not being able to get into the flow of the game. When he did get back in he picked up two more. He mostly blamed himself for the fouls and seemed disappointed that he wasn't able to help the team more.
Nash (15 pts, 10 ast, 5 reb) and Grant Hill (12 points, 5 ast, 5 reb) were their usual solid, veteran selves and Warrick continues to be very impressive off the bench. He finished with 25 points and 6 rebounds and most importantly he got to the free throw line and hit 13 of 14.
Here's a lot more from Nash, Childress and Dudley talking about why the bench unit is struggling and what they can do about it:
Phoenix Suns Bench Unit Not Getting It Done, And They Know It - Desert Dirt - SB Nation Arizona
Their sub-par play has shown up in the blown leads over the last two games against the Chicago Bulls and Los Angeles Clippers. In both games the Suns had tremendous first quarters only to see the bench come in and let the lead slip away which gave their opponents confidence that they could get back in the games.
The point there being, the Suns are small and have disadvantages. They can't afford not to have their bench bringing the hustle to each game. They seem to be down on themselves and in a slump. They need to get out of it.

Steve Nash talking about Dragic and what he's seeing and telling his young understudy.
"I think sometimes he gets caught not taking care of little details and it puts him in a bad position so I try to talk to him in that respect. I think he's one of our best players so it's going to be good when he fights through this; he'll be better for it and make our team a lot better."
SNB AZ Recap:
Phoenix Suns Not Impressive In Win Over Los Angeles Clippers, 116-108 - SB Nation Arizona
Fortunately, the Clippers were not nearly as good as the Chicago Bulls and couldn't take advantage of the Suns lapse and in the end Phoenix won the game 116-108. It was still a disappointing loss for the Suns who should have been able to put a tired three-win team away but couldn't.
Game Notes
1st Qtr
- Clippers first attack they go at Frye in the pain with Jordan. It worked
- Suns getting wide open looks in the paint by moving without the ball. Clips defense horrible
- JRich all 9 Suns points. Timeout Clips
- Not really sure why the Clips aren't running plays for Blake (yet)
- Clips try and post up Blake on Frye. Hill blitzes and forces the turnover. They are not going to give Blake space
- Blake posts up Hedo and turns baseline before help can come
- 2nd foul on Hedo. Tough call. Warrick in
- JRich w/ another three
- Another fast break layup for Suns off turnover off double team on Blake. 24-8
- Clips 5 turnovers. Suns 0
- Thinking I might have my first half time ice cream tonight
- Ducks up 20-19 on UofA. No way the Wildcats win this game
- Another three for JRich. 29-10
- JRich missed an open three in transition. That's news. He's now 3-4 from three
- Clippers have their heads down. Suns bench needs to blow this game open...33-13 with 3:00 to go in the 1st so I guess it's already blown open. Still, they need to blow it more. Dragic about to check in
- Brian Cook is in the game...I guess Jarron Collins is worse option?
- 42-19. Earl Clark time yet?
2nd Qtr
- Would it be a jinx if I start writing my recap now?
- Earl Time!! Barron that is
- Oregon Ducks up 27-19. Only a matter of time
- There you go, Earl. Nice hustle play from the big guy to retain possession
- Suns taking advantage of Clips switching. Run a quick screen to create the mismatch and then attack the post. That time was Josh Childress on a smaller guard
- Good decision by Dudley to not force anything on the drive and then let Goran drive and kick back to him for the open corner three
- 49-29, 8:22
- Not thrilled w/ defensive intensity by Suns bench. Gomes getting wide open looks and nailing them. Cook as well
- Earl Barron is not a very physical player. Would like to see him bump guys coming through the lane much harder. He's just giving them love taps
- 34-22, Oregon
- Blake back in, scores right over Warrick
- Suns going w/ small line up. Hedo, Warrick, Josh, Dudley, Dragic
- 53-36, 5:59
- Warrick doing his thing in the post. I have to say that he's been far better than I expected. More consistent and more of an inside player than advertised. He plays hard and tougher than his size indicates
- Gentry leaving Dragic on the court w/ the starters as he said he would
- Nash coming back in now w/ 3:20. 59-45. Suns offense has been fine, defense has let up
- 4 pts, 8 reb for Blake. Clips 4-9 from three and shooting 55% from the field. Suns 6-11 from three and 53.8% from the field. DEFENSE
- JRich torched Gomes on that back cut to the rim
- Blake w/ the face up bank shot ala Tim Duncan. Went to the bank a second time but was denied
- Dragic -8 in his 10:34 stint. Wanted to see that unit do more, especially on D
- Sick, Blake. Sick
- Clips move the ball around and end up with a Gomes 17 foot turn around fadeaway
- Suns starters playing better D than the bench. I think we have to start talking more about Channing Frye's defense
- 67-51, half. Ice cream time. brb
3rd Qtr
- 52.% shooting for the Clips. That's not acceptable. They were 8-19 in the 1st qtr and 13-21 in the 2nd.
- Good news, the Clips only had 1 OReb and 24 points in the paint
- 67-57. Way to blow the lead. Ugh
- Nice. Dude just won $7,777 by hitting a three-point shot!
- You can see the Clippers confidence increasing...damn it
- Second time out for Gentry in the quarter. 73-66. He's pissed. Me too
- Kiss Cam
- Frye turned down an open three which lead to a 24 sec violation. Clips hit a three in response. Lead down to 4
- Who is Willie Warren and why does he have 5 points in this game?
- Clips not attacking the offensive glass at all. They just shoot and retreat
- Nice job by Warrick attacking Gordon in the post and getting past the help defense as well
- Frye's three puts Suns back up 14
- Nash's three puts Suns back up 17. That was fast
- Damn, Cook is on fire tonight. That one at least was contested
- JRich misses at least one easy layup per game. I think it's in his contract
- Suns back up 18, 98-80. Normally, this wouldn't be a big deal - blowing a big lead and then getting it back - but the way the Suns have been playing they really needed to stomp on the Clips throats early when they had then on the ropes
- I am not sure there's any one person to blame, but in general the bench is lacking that energetic spark. More minutes? Tired from this stretch of schedule - 8th game in 14 days? Whatever it is, it's not pretty.
- 98-81
4th Qtr
- Cook now has 16 points. That really shouldn't happen
- Earl Barron in and misses an open 17fter. That's his shot though, has to take it. He's got the Blake Griffin assignment
- 98-84, 10:42
- Good job by Goran to get the ball to Channing in the post on the switch
- Nice cut by Goran and nice pass from Warrick
- Better job by the bench this time. Not great, but better
- Goran looks tired, but still attacking aggressively and getting hammered. Missed another two FTs though
- Can't leave Frye on an island against Griffin in the post
- Crowd gives Suns a hand for two OReb in a row
- Warrick tries to dunk on Griffin but he would have none of that. Met him at the rim with an rejection
- Time out Suns, 106-96. 4:52. Nash, Hill and JRich surely coming back in now. Clips have had their big guns on the floor all quarter. They are young but they have to be getting tired
- Childress really isn't giving the team much right now. 15 min, 0 points, 2 reb. Dudley better but not much - 9 pts, 1 reb, 22 min. Dragic 18 min, 9 pts, 4 ast, 5 reb. Suns - 15 with him on the floor
- Nash air balled a three w/ Blake backed off him giving space but Suns make two hustle plays to get extra possessions...scratch that, 24 sec violation but effort was nice
- Brian Cook fouled out! Never thought I would be happy to say that.
- Nice D by Frye on Griffin that time. Suns up 110-99, 2:23
- Warrick takes a beating in the paint. Literally, people just beat on him like a drum
- Well, that's one way to stop Blake. Bear hug on the catch. Effective, but not sustainable
- Gordon rams into Hill, send him flying and draws the foul. That kid is strong
- 24 sec violation as Nash dancing around in the paint too long. Poor clock awareness, Scott Howard says in my head
- 112-103, 1:20
- Fake noise FTW!
- Gordon hits a wide open three
- Frye hits a two. Game over

I am just thankful for a win...
Losing to this team would have been tough to sleep through…
STAT may be gone but the Suns will rise....!
The Clippers just shot crazy from downtown tonight.
If it weren’t for those this will be a blowout.
Steve Nash can only give 100 percent. The other 10 percent he donates to his families.
Extend J-Rich. He's the real deal.
Yeah, but that just like saying
If it weren’t for us shooting crazy from downtown vs the Lakers, they would have blew us out.

Damn straight, a win is a win.
Lakers and San Antonio lost. We’re 5.5 games from first place. We’re a game out of the sixth seed, 3.5 from the fourth seed. Every win counts.
Nice showing from Frye, Warrick, and JRich. Grant had a nice game, too, and only had to play 25 min. Dudely played very well. And yes, I meant Dudely.

Don't have to be happy with the way we played to be happy we got a win.
Wins matter, especially if you think this team will get better later, which I do. You don’t think the Lakers or the Spurs have let a big lead slip away, or stolen one they should have owned? We’re still trying to find ourselves, and getting a win out of a wake-up call is a bonus. Especially if it wakes us up.

It was only against the Clippers
But the Thunder and Hornets lost to the Clippers. No complaints here. It’s +1 in the win column just the same.

well I'll be damned
you sure told me…good job
If the "hustle energy role" vacated by Lou can supposedly be filled so easily
Our bench guys are doing a good job not auditioning for that job…
IMO, the culture of the 2nd unit is different than it was last season. I hope with more time to gel(Lopez back as a starter, Frye back in the 2nd unit), it’ll resemble last year’s unit that seemingly outplayed our starters many a time.
Steve Nash, the league's MVP, is a longhaired Canadian who spoke out against the war in Iraq and reads The Communist Manifesto. Quentin Richardson declared after a game-winning shot that it "was like Hamlet. It was a suspense thriller, and I killed them at the end." Amare Stoudemire, when asked to comment on a 22-point third quarter against the Kings, said, "I've got a tendency to jump over some guys' heads and throw it down."
Well, Frye is now starting. Hakim played starters minutes. I thought they played pretty well.
Their backups just started draining threes – which is our game plan. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn’t. They adjusted.

Gomes and cook wont be able to reproduce those numbers EVER!

Cook certainly did not have many wide open looks; he hit threes from nearly everywhere tonight
I doubt that if the clippers wee to play this one over again cook and gomes would even have half of what they combined for
Driving the Earl Clark bandwagon with Larfleeze as we welcome EricSun89 to our roadtrip. Extend Jason Richardson!!!!!!!!!!!!
By the way the Suns are playing right now... any player can flat out shoot threes. .
We just give teams that kind of confidence with our repertoire of letting teams back in the game.. our defense is well – not there.

and this was the focus of my post game questions…stay tuned.
As for the win is a win thing…true, but the Suns team certainly didn’t have that attitude. They were not in the least bit pleased with their performance. They know the way they played tonight isn’t going to beat too many teams.

Agreed..
But I do think a big part of is that Dudley and Dragic aren’t shooting well. I argued the same point last game, that the 2nd unit was tentative, but watching them tonight I think a lot rests on the big shooting slump of those 2. Dragic in particular was effective last year because he was fearless, and combined with Frye and Dudley for a very lethal 3 point attack. (Barbosa also always played fearlessly). This year with out that (As in addition Frye is not with the unit) I think that really creates a sense of tentativeness and I think that also infects the defensive energy.
But loosing Lou is also a bit of a factor as he would always bring it, and created a bit of a back stop even when they didn’t shoot well.
Tonight, it was still not there, but I felt they made a small step forward. It was good for Gentry to leave them in. And Dudley was a bit more effective. So maybe it will slowly come back. Getting Lopez back and moving Frye back to the 2nd unit should help.
the best way to get them out of a slump
is to play them more minutes and let them figure it out together (Chill, Duds and Dragic together)

I don't get it either.. I guess Gentry wanted a "traditional" center for the second unit.
I am very disappointed at Gentry. He did play Goran more but still I wanted to see Clark play dammit.

I dont understand why gentry limits the oppurtunities in which clark can play in; I mean I really wnt tounderstand the concpet of benching clark repeatedly when he can provide at least a little bit of defense and rebounding.
I mean barron looks about as tall or shorter than warrick.

I know Channing deserved to start, but if the Suns wanted to see what Barron can bring we could have went with the Jarron Collins rotation. You know start Barron for a couple of mins then swap in Frye. Rotation wise this is good because we are still aiming for Rolo to get back at the starting position, right?

Idk, but is there a possibility that there might be something going on behind closed doors; possibly that the FO gave up on clark
the second kerr resigned? I know, very dumb question. But what else is keeping gentry from playing clark in garbage time?!
Driving the Earl Clark bandwagon with Larfleeze as we welcome EricSun89 to our roadtrip. Extend Jason Richardson!!!!!!!!!!!!
god i hope not.... the Suns did not really gave him a chance.
Our bench was sooo good last year that he never had PT. Now, our bench is meh but still did not get any PT. Rolo is out and still did not get any PT. Rolo and Nash was out still no PT. Hedo had a early foul problem tonight still no PT. We played the Clippers and was ahead the first half – still no PT.

I think there's
something to the fact that Kerr and Griff drafted Clark and probably would have stuck with him longer, but at the same time these are Gentry’s decisions on who plays when
He’s seen a lot of Earl Clark and I think had a good idea of what he can/can’t bring. He’s trying to get a sense of what Earl Barron might have as well. Remember he played Siler a few times to test him out and hasn’t played him since.
We could see some of these rotation changes you guys talk about but I doubt they will come immediately. That’s not Gentry’s style. Remember how long he took before putting Lopez in the starting lineup last year? While in the short term, you can say that he waited too long, in the long run that worked out.
I am guessing he’s more concerned w/ showing a lack of confidence and faith in his proven guys then he is in experimenting with this new/younger guys. He’s a coach who’s loyal to his players and that works for him and he gets a lot out of his team b/c of that.
Messing w/ things over a few bad games is a good way to lose that trust and faith.

"I feel younger almost every year. I feel like I'm getting better every year. I feel like the season gets easier for me the last two years." Steve Nash
Clark is not getting it
It seems rather obvious why he does not play. We have always played undersized at many positions. One could argue the Nash is undersized, and nonathletic .
Clark does not play not because of his athleticism, no he does not play because he cannot understand the game, or at least our game plan. He has been practicing with the team for 2+ years and is still out. In practice, I bet he is out of position a lot and does not rotate of D. The few times I have seen him on the floor, he looked awful.
Gentry needs to figure out how to make him look good for a month, then trade’em.
Obviously you did not see him against th magic or any point last season where he had more than 7 measely minutes; clark has played well when he has
gotten more than spare minutes, and clark is also an athletic monster so I have no idea what you are talking about
Driving the Earl Clark bandwagon with Larfleeze as we welcome EricSun89 to our roadtrip. Extend Jason Richardson!!!!!!!!!!!!
Just for reference:
I tallied the numbers for games in which Clark played 10 minutes or more (subjective number, I know) to see how he did when he got “rotational minutes.” There were 15 games total in his total career – a very small sample size.
In those games he averaged 15 MPG, 6.5 PPG, 3.1 RPG, 0.7 TO, 0.3 BPG, 0.1 SPG, 0.7 APG while shooting 50% from the field (41/81), 1-3 from 3 and 58% (15/26) from the line.
It’s also important to remember that for most of these minutes he was probably on the floor with scrubs. Scrubs on the opposing team and scrubs on his own team. Factor that in how you will.

Really? Did you never watch Clark play?
I wouldn’t say Clark’s the antithesis of Griffin but they’re pretty much as different as you can get for players that play the same position. Clark playing a perimeter oriented game using his high all around skill level and talent to score and distribute, Griffin with a game that doesn’t leave the paint using his athleticism, strength and hustle to score and rebound.

sorry hc but eric is right
clark would be griffin lite…but as this guy develops, who will be better then griffin lite. clark has the size and ridiculous athleticism similar to griffin…we hoped he could finish and find his spot in in our offense. es clark has proven to be no where near comparisons to griffin or amare, but has very similar phyiscal skill sets…
just imagine a griffin nash pick’n roll

Blake is like
10 times stronger than Earl Clark…and about 100 times more skilled at the game of basketball. But, they both can jump real high (Blake higher) and are both about the same height.

like i said ...griffin lite
but size, (both height and strength) and hops are in the same ball park (blake better on all)
griffin more skilled is a no shit moment, I’m just agreeing with eric that clark has the tools….and as far as two players being as different as they can be while playing the same position; I think that award goes to turk and griffin/stat.
"I feel younger almost every year. I feel like I'm getting better every year. I feel like the season gets easier for me the last two years." Steve Nash
Well what I meant by what I said
is that we hope Clark would turn out to be our guy at the 4. Turk is clearly not cut out as our power forward and many people here, myself included, was hoping Clark would step up and become our PF of the future. We all hoped Clark would come in, play with energy, defend and rebound. If he drops in 10-15 ppg, that’s just a bonus.
I said nothing about them having similar skill sets or whatnot.

What if we still had Taylor?
Taylor on Blake?
Steve Nash can only give 100 percent. The other 10 percent he donates them to charities.
I too have wondered why Gentry hasn't used the Jarron Collins method
But with Silo in the role of Jarron.
Frankly, I think that rotation was our best basketball of last year.
Silo’s bigger, and I think ultimately, better than Barron, who seems to kind of stand around a lot.
Silo sets a mean screen and doesn’t seem to share the rest of the team’s aversion to banging with the bigs down low.
He’s also a decent defender in man on man on a 4 or a 5, though he does seem a bit slow of foot to guard cutting 2’s and 3’s in the zone defense.
Frye would give the reserves a little extra defense and scoring ability, which they sorely need with Dudley shooting cold and Dragic seemingly kind of indecisive without Barbs running alongside.
by suns68 on Nov 26, 2010 11:24 PM MST via mobile reply actions
I just think Goran isn't shooting the ball very well. and that is hurting his confidence a lot
I remember him just torching guys with insane 3’s and really was dangerous all over the court. I do tend to agree that there are subtle chemistry issues all the time, and losing Barbosa may not have been as small a matter as many would have liked to make of it. But, Goran also killed last year during that long period when Barbosa was injured, so I don’t think that is too big of a factor.
Nothing said it louder and clearer to me when in the 4th tonight, Goran missed a key and amazingly easy lay up and a huge wide open 3 from the corner plus missing 2 key ft’s early in the 4th. And since you can sense he is uncertain about his shot, you can see the tentativeness in his play. I am beginning to be a bit of a broken record on that, but sometimes its just about hitting shots, and watching the ball go in the hoop creating a confidence and relaxation which breads success. I think something similar is true of Chill and Dudley. And if Dudley and Dragic aren’t supremely confident and Chil is injured and struggling a bit, and Hak is a new guy and not a leader yet, and Turk while sometimes effective seems to need the game played at a much slower pace, then the team becomes uncertain about who is going to score the ball, where they go when things aren’t playing out well, who the “go to is”, what set do they run in any particular situation…….
And while I hear you about Silo/Barron appearing as guest stars in the role popularized by Jarron Collins, we had Amare last year and a more cohesive and clearly set up offence, so I can understand the reluctance to put an offensive stiff on the floor, when there is a guy at the floor (whoever that is playing the 4) who doesn’t have a clearly defined role in the offence yet.
goran and LB did play very well together
with their speed and shooting, it was really hard to guard that 2nd unit with them and 2 or 3 shooters on the perimeter..they were also able to interchangably play the 1 and 2 causing match up problems…
I Dont think goran will that that same dynamic with chill since he’s not a shooter, but hopefully they’ll work out something similar
leandro let us crank up the pace with the 2nd unit
Turk is a good player, but this trade just screwed the pooch in terms of keeping the team balanced.

Their bench killed our bench
And our starters murdered their starters.
Ugly, unpleasant win. This team just kind of is what it is….horrible at defense/rebounding, capable of scoring points, and prone to blown leads. It’s going to be a relatively frustrating year….but we all already knew that.
Griffin’s numbers were 10 times as impressive as his performance tonight. Brian Cook had a bigger impact on the game. I can see how people would think he was awesome by looking at the stat line. That 360 spin in the air in the 4th was LOL stupid. (PS…he’s had an awesome year…not an indictment of his year)

Also Griffin had 2 years in college and basically a professional redshirt year (which I think matters since he had a chance to adjust to how being an adult works). Puts him 2 years in front of the 3 guys you listed.

But yes, I was just going to add that his red shirt season last year was a super edge. Durant in his rookie year wasn’t all that good though. You could see his potential but he didn’t impact the way you played against his team that much.
Durant’s rookie numbers: 20.3 pts, 4.4 reb, 17.1 FGA, 43% shooting (28.8% 3P%)
Blake (so far): 19.3, pts, 11.3 reb, 14.4 FGA, 51.1% shooting

I think that dude should be seeing floor time with Robin out. I like that Earl Barron is big, but Silo has shown that he takes up real space on the defensive end. So he’s not quick, he has a few nice post moves and he’s keen to learn, to be molded.

His defense is pretty poor, and he needs experience before he’s ready for more court time. I’d like to see him in the D-league if they plan to play Barron in front of him in the rotation.

It's a win thank god
I don’t care how we get them or if the game was Bleh. We don’t have a starting PF and I was waiting for Blake Griffin to have a 40pt 20rb game. It’s not fair on Turkoglu to expect him to hold down the PF spot. We have to throw Clark or Lawal in there or trade for one. This season maybe a struggle but i’m with these Suns all the way.
A win.
But it appears the movie is a re-run. Maybe shake the lineup a bit. Get Clark some minutes. Hell start Clark and bring Hedo off the bench. I think it is time to get creative and also time for the Suns to defend like they did late last year.
LOL (and I really dislike that acronym)
at all the “why aren’t we playing this loser more minutes” talk after a tough start to the year.
Guys and gals, there’s a REASON Clark, Siler and Barron are not getting big playing time. It’s not necessarily that they can’t play NBA basketball, it’s that they can’t play it better than the 9 guys ahead of them in the rotation. Gentry is not stupid. He’s not going to bench a “sure thing” on the hope that one of those guys plays above their head.
There’s only 240 total minutes in a game. Duds, Chill and Dragic are already playing too few.
I know we’re all desperate for better PF and C play. But that doesn’t mean anyone with a big body can play better than someone with a smaller body just because they’re bigger.

Went back and watched
the bench guys - Childress, Dudley and Warrick mostly — are making a lot of mistakes in their rotations. They are not communicating well so they end up repeatedly confused. For example, on a baseline screen in the 2nd quarter, Childress tried to fight through the screen and Barron switched it which left Cook wide open. That kind of thing happened numerous times in the past few games.
Other mental mistakes, like Warrick giving Cook space at the three point line instead of getting up in his grill. That dude can’t drive a car, let alone the ball. Going under screens for Gomes after he was hot instead of denying him space to get a shot off. Little stuff like that adds up. The good thing, is that’s all very fixable.
They just aren’t on the same page right now.

Good Point...
I noticed our bench guys, and even Turkoglu for some reason, making quite a few mistakes on defensive rotations.
One play in particular that caught my attention last night was in the 3rd quarter when Gordon had a clear path to the basket and Frye, who already had three fouls, was forced to move over and foul him to stop the easy basket.
Frye then yelped out an F-bomb and yelled at Warrick “Pay attention!” You could hear it clearly over the TV, so many of you may have heard the same thing and no exactly the play I’m referring to.
Two things about that…One, that type of defensive breakdown can’t be allowed…The dribble penetration straight away through the lane for an easy basket is simply inexcusable. Even though Our guys are new to our system, they need to tighten up their rotations quickly. Second, Frye is really impressing me lately. Not only with his presence of mind to recognize his need to transition to being a REAL center, but now with his vocal leadership on the court. He’s doing so many good things out there now that Robin’s hurt, and I don’t know if many fans really understand how important he has been to this team.
Anyhow, our bench seems disjointed at times on offense and defense alike. I’ve seen our bench struggle to score because too many players are standing around instead of slashing and cutting, and they have struggled on defense by being late on rotations and leaving the shooters open on the perimeter. The good news is, there is no reason these things shouldn’t improve over the course of the season…This is still a relatively new group in terms of playing with one another, and I believe that Gentry and staff can help them get it together.

Agreed
Although you could also say it was Frye’s fault for allowing Griffin to establish himself in the low post to begin with, he did an excellent job of wrapping him up and stopping any attempt at a highlight-reel/possible momentum shifting, posterizing dunk.
To his credit, it’s much easier said than done to battle against such a strong/quick player as Griffin and keep him out of the paint. I am just fine with the way Frye played Blake last night, holding him to one of his least highlight worthy games yet.
Agreed..good post
I think that many of these skills were actually present last year and that Channing was consistently under appreciated/underrated as a complete bball player.
re the bench….Part of the standing around is that we have 2 post up guys now in Chill and Hak that we never had, and one guy often with the bench in Turk. who may actually prefer a slower pace. So while in theory they may be nice additions to the bench, the bench was actually more cohesive last year when they were more limited offensively. So there was only Barbosa, and Dragic penetrating and hitting 3’s along with Dudley and Frye on the 3 point line, and Lou mostly getting the garbage stuff and the occasional PNR. that required a lot less decision making and actual leadership from Dragic which probably was just fine by him, as the options were much more limited and the outcome of the decisions less dramatic.
Its almost like this unit, needs a bit of time with a more complex creative PG to kind of get them organized, and get the priorities established and the roles meshed more seamlessly..Wonder if there is anyone like that around on the Suns??
But seriously, it would be interesting if we could manage to get a few minutes where Dragic and Nash just switch, with Dragic going with the starters and Nash with the 2nd unit?

Last year, we spent 2 months giving up big leads.
Our bench wasn’t the bench we know now until February – it took a while to put that together. It was aided by the return of Lopez, which solidified our rotations and caused our second team defense to gel. It also coincided with Amar’e returning to full health.

@portland (thanks, sunequalizer)
This is a good set of games to get some things together. Denver can be tough, but it’s a good matchup for us, as they’re not terribly big. Indiana is playing some good ball, and is a possible trap game.
We played pretty well on D for stretches, but as teams will, when down by a large margin, they turn to the three, and we invite them to do that. Last night, two reserves combined to go 7-9 from 3. We held Griffin down pretty well, and Gordon had a good night that was largely ineffective. We only lost the rebounding battle by 3, 50-47, and we kept our composure, for the most part.
Dudley showed some signs of life last night – it’s definitely something he can build on. We need him if we’re going to have a bench that can take over or control a game. But it’s sure going to be nice to get Lopez back.

It’s one thing to say we can’t play defense – it’s quite another to say we didn’t. We definitely have the talent, if not the size. Lopez
Yeah, but personally, I’m sort of writing Lopez off for this season. Why? Because before the knee injury, he had two problems: recovering from his back injury, and seemingly not knowing how to play without an Amare Stoudemire on the court. He was lost. When he comes back, if his back’s not still bothering him, he might have soreness to work out of the knee and rust to shake off; and he’ll still be adjusting to playing whout Amare Stoudemire.

That's why I'm glad you're not the coach.
There’s no guarantee that Lopez returns to form – but there’s no reason he can’t. He was hurt a large part of last season, and played extremely well late in the year. Maybe he comes back, maybe he doesn’t, but he is our best chance at getting much better quickly. What happened yesterday doesn’t always have a bearing on what happens tomorrow.

I recc'ed it for honesty - and obviousness.
I know that you and Beavis are down on Lopez. My point is, you don’t give up on a true 7 footer after 5 bad games. Teams wait 20 years to land a player like that, and we know he has the potential – patience is called for. Robin didn’t really perform well until January of last year, but it was worth the wait. A healthy Robin – even if that means learning to play with some limitations – makes the Suns a much better team.
Auntie Em: Hate you, hate Kansas, taking the dog.

a bit disagreed
the bench was quite good from the outset, but were a tad inconsistent…Overall, their first couple of months last year was better than this first month by this bench as I recall.
But yes that crazily dominant thing didn’t develop till later and was crowned in the nutso, Dragic game 3 vs. the Spurs, where Goran reached almost mythic proportions. So, while I take the point that they improved as the year went on, they were more consistent from the outset, and it was more about Amare and Jrich finding their game, finally, that really turned that season around.
Remember the Amare benching game, and Jrich hitting that floater 15 footer versus, I can’t remember, Houston or Atlanta, at the end of the game to really raise his confidence? To be sure, Lopez’s emergence was also key, but remember we were at our best in the playoffs when there was almost zero Lopez. Of course, this is a different year so having him effective would probably be more important this year.
this is Bright Side of the Sun...

has felt like a compressed version of last season..we’ve had our overacheiving run, then our terrible run, followed by our run of giving up big leads, all in the course of 15 games. So currently we’re tracking to about january of last season. If things continue the way they have, in a few games we’ll figure out the leads, then proceed to the awesome bench stage, then the unstoppable rampage and solid D stage..

yep, that was it...
so think of that lakers and nuggets stretch as the initial 14-3 burst from last year..
Need to play Siler for some minutes at Center, develop Barron as backup PF
Gentry needs to play Siler for 10-12 minutes a game (in 3-4 minute bursts), and have Siler simply get to the low post right outside the paint, have Nash, Dragic, and Turk spoonfeed him the ball, have Siler finish strong, and have Siler defend the low post. I call this plan the “Flick and Post”
Siler would be able to get 10-12points, 4-6 rebounds in 10-12 minutes, would get opponents’ bigs in foul trouble, and would become a double-team magnet in this system. Additionally, other teams would have trouble switching between Frye and Siler’s offenses.
Earl Barron should be developed as the backup PF (behind War Machine), to defend the perimeter against Bigs, shoot mid-range jumpers, and get rebounds.
Then, Turk can facilitate and play the 3, 2, and 1 more.

And I wonder why Warrick still hasn’t replaced Turkoglu in the starting lineup. I know I don’t know as much as Coach Gentry (or as much as any masthead member of BSOS), so I won’t say he’s wrong not to start Warrick; but…Warrick keeps having good games off the bench while Turkoglu keeps underperforming. (Notwithstanding that he got hurt against the Bulls.) Warrick is the only Suns player remotely similar to an Amare Stoudemire.

I think it’s because the bench is under-performing. You start Warrick and you’ve got nobody who you can count on to produce off the bench. When Lopez comes back and Frye can return to his back-up spot than Gentry should start Warrick.

Yes, Siler is a healthy Bynum, better than Shaq for us
Well, Shaq had a big ego, wanted many minutes, was a poor free throw shooter, and slowed our offense down.
Siler is a better free throw shooter than Shaq, a better field goal shooter as well, about 30 lbs. lighter than Shaq, and would not be playing more than 15 minutes a game in spurts.
The net result of the plan is that the Suns would have an effective “Ten Seconds or less Halfcourt offense”, for a good part of the game, which would really confuse other teams
If Siler shoots 6 shots and draws three fouls, he can reasonably be expected to get 10-12 points. Maybe he will only get 3-5 rebounds, but that is not bad for 12-15 minutes of play.
Siler will slow down our offense.
