Phoenix Suns Practice Report: What Does Hedo Now?
One thing my friends, that I can promise you with 100 percent confidence is that today is not the last time I will make a dumb joke using the name "Hedo". There are not many things in life that I can guarantee, but this is one of them.
On to practice reporting. I mean reporting on practice.
And for once, the big story from practice is actual about practice. This weird day continues.
You might recall (you better recall) that I wrote this morning about Nash's tired legs being the cause for his poor shooting last night against the Spurs. I maintain -- and challenge any of you who disagree to a duel at sunrise -- that Nash HAD to take those shots based on the way the Spurs were insulting him by putting puny Tony Parker on him and staying home on both the shooters and roll men.
What has made the Nash pick and roll so deadly over the years isn't just the amazing bounce passes or the incredible hands and slams of Amare. Teams were FORCED to double cover Nash rolling off the screen which opened up those passing opportunities. If teams are going to simply follow Nash around the screen and have the big man stay with the screener, then Nash must take those shots to open everything else up. The entire Suns offense depends on Nash taking exactly those shots in those circumstances.
The problem comes when Nash doesn't make the shots and he didn't last night and he blamed tired legs just 4 games into the season coming off 4 days of rest. WTH!!!
Here's what Gentry had to say about that.
"I think what we've got to do is that we monitor practice a little bit more with him...I don't think Steve needs to be involved in an hour and a half practice. I think he needs to be involved in about a 40 minute practice. We scrimmage a little bit and keep their timing down but he and J Rich and Grant you know, guys like that, I don't see where they have to be out there 90 minutes in a practice."
If only there was someone Gentry could talk to about limiting Nash's minutes in practice....hmmm.
OK, that's wasn't fair.
Gentry later said that they've been practicing more here early in the season to build chemistry but there's a plan to fix all that. Gentry said he would flip-flop practices so the scrimmages and timing work was early and he could get his vets off the court and then do more teaching stuff with the younger players in the second half of practice.
Problem. Solved. Right?
As for Hedo (the butt of today's headline joke), if you re-watch the game you will see that the Suns went to him early in the first quarter to get him going and, as Gentry said, to take advantage of mismatches against Blair and Duncan. Hedo didn't hit those early shots and then continued to pass up open three's (a Phoenix Suns Cardinal Sin) later in the game. Benching him in favor of Warrick was simply a matter of riding the hot hand.
Hedo did some things well in the game despite the unfortunate box score. He had his first real finish off a solid roll on a Nash pick and roll. He was the ball handler for several pick and rolls with Frye and even Siler. On his best play, the Spurs switched a pick and roll and Hedo attacked Duncan and drew the foul.
I still think that in a few months Hedo is going to figure this all out. I like that he's staying late and working on the practice court and reportedly is also coming in at night to get in some extra cardio work. I see the basic skill sets that he brings and the potential of how that fits on the team. He even had a solid steal on Duncan while guarding the "best big man in the universe" in the post.
I think he's getting better each game and eventually will hopefully be decent. In the mean time, the Suns are treading water without him adding much which is a positive sign for things to come if you believe that Hedo will do. I could turn out to be wrong and Hedo could be a bust, but if you're giving up on him already I have two words for you...Goran. Dragic. I am more worried about Steve's legs than Hedo's play.

Game #4 Recap: Spurs outshoot Suns, the Ghost of Corner Threes Past Comes Alive - Pounding The Rock First big win of the season, yes? I know the Suns aren't as potent as they were when A'm'a'r'e' was still turning Nash's glorious passes into buckets, but as the famous line goes, they still are who we think they are - lots of running and creating havoc on offense, especially those dreaded pick and rolls.
- Is It Just Me Or Is Goran Dragic Really Good? - Desert Dirt - SB Nation Arizona Goran looked very decisive, both when he wanted to score and when he wanted to pass. Although he only played 16 minutes, he had eight points, eight assists and three rebounds. He finished with one more assist than Nash, who played twice as many minutes. And some of those assists were Nash-esque things of beauty.
- The Heat And The Hopless, Week 1: Where Our Dueling Heroes Battle For Supremacy - SBNation.com So hold on. We'll dig in to the Heat and Wolves as individuals in due time, but first we must pause and appreciate the basketball eclipse that took place in Miami Tuesday night. If you put a hand over your right eye, the T'Wolves' disarray might completely obscure the Heat's dominance. Truly a twice-in-a-season event to remember.
- NBA Scores And More: Brandon Jennings The Weak Link In Bucks' Loss To Celtics - SBNation.com In the end, Richard Jefferson was the difference. Last year, Jefferson struggled because he wanted to be more than a spot-up shooter. This year, he's accepted that role, and it's paid immediate dividends. His production has improved, and tonight, he showed he can master the Spurs' "corner three" role. Jefferson hit four threes from the left corner, the last of which gave the Spurs the lead for good. If he can hit that shot consistently, the Spurs' offense will suddenly regain the spacing they didn't have all of last season.

SUNS: Suns Practice Interviews - Nov. 4, 2010
Suns.com TV caught up with Alvin Gentry, Goran Dragic and Josh Childress to get their thoughts on the start to the 2010-11 season and what fans can look to going forward. - azcentral.com blogs - Coro's Orange Slices - PaulCoro - 3 Suns questions to ponder It is not that the Suns being 1-3 with losses to the 4-1 Blazers, the 5-0 Lakers and the 3-0 Spurs is cause for panic. But there are issues. Otherwise, Coach Alvin Gentry, GM Lance Blanks and owner Robert Sarver would not have been leaving a postgame meeting in Gentry's office at 11:20 p.m. after a 112-110 home loss to San Antonio.
- Suns shoot cold late to give Spurs victory in Phoenix "We fought for it, didn’t have a great game, but I feel really good about our team" Nash said. "We’re playing hard, we’ve been in every game and we just aren’t quite clicking yet." The strange thing? It looked like they were clicking. But the missing piece was the ability to finish plays, finish defensive matchups and finish the game.
- Hollins to miss Phoenix game " The Commercial Appeal Grizzlies coach Lionel Hollins and assistant Johnny Davis will not be with the team for a road game Friday against the Phoenix Suns. They will instead be in Portland, paying their final respects to former teammate Maurice Lucas, who died Sunday at age 58 after a long battle with bladder cancer.
- Steve Nash Responds to 'Hoax' Published by Phoenix New Times -- NBA FanHouse But whatever the outlet's intentions, someone in charge really needs to take a much closer look at any content that's published on the topic of sports. Because apparently, people see this publication/web site as a legitimate news source of some kind, and take the words that appear upon it as being actual, reported journalism, when it's pretty much the exact opposite.
- Remembering Luke | Phoenix Suns Blog - Blogs from the Phoenix Suns Organization Luke was just past his prime when the Suns got him from the New York Knicks for another power forward, Truck Robinson, in 1982. Luke was not a prototypical Suns player, as I think of them. The prototypical Suns player, over the years of the team’s existence, has been a graceful, finesse-oriented player, precise and under control, creative and streamlined. I think of Connie Hawkins, Walter Davis, Alvan Adams, Paul Westphal, Larry Nance, Jason Kidd and Steve Nash. In some ways, the history of the Suns has been a long quest to find a bona-fide dominant power player to complement those prototypes, and when the Suns have found some good ones (Paul Silas, Charles Barkley, Amar’e Stoudemire), the team has come awfully close to championships.
- Maurice Lucas – Gentleman Athlete | Phoenix Suns Blog - Blogs from the Phoenix Suns Organization Maurice Lucas was meaner than a junkyard dog with an impacted wisdom tooth. Maurice Lucas was as so soft hearted he wouldn’t hurt even the most annoying fly. No, there weren’t two Maurice Lucases. Trust me, there was only one. And the Suns were fortunate to have him for three of his 12 NBA seasons.

We were horrendous defending the P&R and the only thing that saved us was A) Pop having to play Dice far more minutes than he would’ve preferred, B) the Suns attempting to use goofy Robin Lopez as their roller on some plays instead of Hakim Warrick, C) Nash having an off shooting night , and D) RJ going bonkers in the fourth.”

Wathing NY vs CHI and boy does amare look lost; he is just looking around. It looks so wierd seeing him wear something other than purple and orange; both nash and amare are having tough times getting into a smooth flow of things and it has affected both of their games.

If this keeps up, the NY Press will eat him alive…if he desn’t figure this out quick, about the only thing that could save him is if the Suns season went unbelievably south, and Nash requests a trade to New York….
STAT may be gone but the Suns will rise....!
A'm'a'r'e' is struggling, but..
remember last year, he really didn’t get going till the end of January and the benching in the Dallas game. So its early.
Having said that….Kobe, Lebron, Wade, Dirk…and the other max players, NEVER struggle like this multiple games in a row. It just proves, again, that he wasn’t quite worth what he was demanding. And the thing is, Championship teams don’t pay good players, great money. Look at the Lakers, for e.g.. Kobe and Pau are max contracts, but they deserve it. Others who aren’t max players aren’t paid that way.

Amare had very little to do with the win..
he had 8 To’s and only scored like 14 points on 5-21 shooting with 8 rebs in 37 mins, and had one of the poorer +/-‘s on the team. They won because they had insane outside shooting. (16-24 from 3’s).
And Toney Douglas had a career-best shooting night at 30 points.
When any of your players does that, it does tend to fish out a W.
maybe its just cause I am a lawyer, but..
on the other hand, is it possible that the spacing that Amare helps create, is why the teams he plays on shoots so well from 3’s?
and..
that Nash while still great, is not quite what he used to be, and not quite up to carrying the load in the same way without his connection to Amare, to cover for his very slightly deteriorating energy and the easy opportunities that he used to get that he now has to force/create?
Maybe it's just because I am a cocaine dealer, but...
the year Amar’e was injured we still did well from three. It always helps to have an inside presence, but it’s not necessarily required.
And Nash is still great, but that may be the drugs talking.

From Posting and Toasting
Posting and Toasting is SBNation’s New York Knicks blog, where the “other Seth” routinely kills it by the way. If you’re interested in keeping up with Amar’e, you could do soooooooo much worse than P&T. Anyway, his take on Stoudemire’s performance last night (emphasis mine):
- Another major storyline was the plight of Amar’e Stoudemire, who sputtered amid the Knicks’ success, notching an ugly 14 and 8 on 5-21 shooting, 8 turnovers, and all six of his fouls. There’s no question that Stoudemire played a clumsy, sloppy game. He made poor decisions, stepped way out of his comfort zone, and wasted numerous possessions. That said, I think those of us that were calling for him to be benched were missing something. See, the Bulls are terrific at defending the pick-and-roll, and they crammed the lane to prevent Amar’e from knifing to the rim. Gallinari, Raymond Felton, Douglas, and the rest of the shooters owe plenty of their open shots to the fact that Stoudemire is a defender magnet. THAT said, just because Amar’e is a defender magnet doesn’t mean he has to be a ball magnet. I think the seed needs to be planted in his head that he can be incredibly effective on offense without scoring or even handling the rock. Just by picking, rolling, and attracting help, Amar’e can open up the perimeter, allow wings to sneak backdoor, and generally wreak havoc.
None of this sounds familiar whatsoever.

I remember when we used to do that. Sigh.
I’ll bet a lot of those threes were wide open looks because the defense had to respect Amare down low.
by suns68 on Nov 4, 2010 9:10 PM MST via mobile up reply actions
The Suns right now are
36-90 from three (40%)
Last season adjusting the per game over four games the Suns were
35.6 – 86.3 (41.3%)
So not sure yet if Amare being gone is impacting the three point shooting. The biggest difference is worse defense but again, not sure how much of that is Suns and how much is the opponents. Suns opponents so far have shot 42% from three compared to 35.5% last year.
Is this a result of the Suns having to help more inside and leaving shooters open or is this just small sample size and playing good teams? Ask again in a few weeks but that will be fun to watch.
Raising Arizona Sports at SB Nation Arizona twitter: @sethpo
Good stats, Seth
I didn’t realize we were shooting that well from outside this year. Can you tell from the stats you have at hand if we’ve got more or fewer attempts?
He had a poor game but he's doing pretty well for the season offensively
His TOs are horrendous though.
Steve Nash, the league's MVP, is a longhaired Canadian who spoke out against the war in Iraq and reads The Communist Manifesto. Quentin Richardson declared after a game-winning shot that it "was like Hamlet. It was a suspense thriller, and I killed them at the end." Amare Stoudemire, when asked to comment on a 22-point third quarter against the Kings, said, "I've got a tendency to jump over some guys' heads and throw it down."
They were early in the year for us last season, too.
Holding on to the ball is part of getting into shape for Amar’e, and slapping at the ball is the game plan for defending him.
Auntie Em: Hate you, hate Kansas, taking the dog.

Amare's been a traditional slow starter his whole career
His second halves have always been more impressive.
An argument could be made that Nash and Amare miss each other through 4 games. Still too small of a sample. The rumors of Nash to the Knicks have already started though.
Nash
17.8 points
6.8 assists
5.3 turnovers
45% field goals
Amare
19.5 points
7.8 rebounds
6.3 turnovers
39.4% field goals

"I feel younger almost every year. I feel like I'm getting better every year. I feel like the season gets easier for me the last two years." Steve Nash
I recc'd waxmonkey above to get him to green
Because it seemed appropriate given his choice of career…
That said, I disagree that the proper analogy for this year is the 05-06 Amare-free season.
Actually, it’s the 1996-97 season (also Amare-free).
That year, we started 0-13 and still made the playoffs.
The turning point was when we dumped Robert Horry after he got in a fight with then-coach Ainge and threw a towel at him, and in general acted like an unrepentant a-hole.
So I propose we bring Horry out of retirement, sign him to a short contract, and then very publicly fire his ass.
I don’t know if it would make the team any better, but for me, it would be the feel-good story of 2010-11.

Hedon't
I think he’s getting better each game and eventually will hopefully be decent.
Not exactly a ringing endorsement. The Suns can’t afford a whole lot of players who might someday aspire to become tolerably competent at a $10 million a year clip.
The best thing about Hedon’t so far is that at least the Suns still have a player with an apostrophe in his name.
I was half joking w/ that wording but
you made me wonder, what would a decent clip be for $10m / yr. Not in averages but name me some players not on rookie contracts around that price range that Hedo should be comparable to. Boris Diaw makes about that much but I am sure you didn’t have him in mind.
Just curious.
The way this Suns team is built they don’t need consistency from all there guys. They need a few to step up each game out of the Frye, Dudley, Warrick, Childress, Hedo, Robin, Hill pool of scoring potential.
The guys that needs to be consistent are Nash and JRich.
Consistency is what sets super stars apart. There’s guys in the league that can do what Kobe does but no one but Kobe does it every night, year after year. That sets him apart from other two guards that can shoot and drive and score.
Raising Arizona Sports at SB Nation Arizona twitter: @sethpo
$10 million should fetch a solid contributer
Spurs – I would take McDyess over him @ $4.9 million
(Ginobili only makes $11.8 – he’s a guard though – I’ll just list forwards and big men)
Utah – Millsap makes $7.6
Okur – $9.9 (that’s real close)
Portland – Aldridge – $11.2
Camby – $11.7
Przybilla – $7.4
Hornets – Okafor – $11.5
West – $8.3
Thunder – nobody on that team makes $7 million this year
Lakers – Odom – $8.2
Denver – Nene – $11.3
Golden State – Biedrins – $9.0
Clippers – Kaman – $11.8
That was just a quick stroll through the Western Conference. Obviously another search could be done to dig up egregious contracts that would at least to some extent counterbalance the evidence submitted above. With that being said, I still contend that $10 million dollars should be worthy of an average to above average starter. It can be hard to overcome wasting that kind of cap room on an unproductive/unecessary player.
by Jim Coughenour on Nov 5, 2010 10:00 AM MST up reply actions
If he turns out to be unproductive/unnecessary
then any contract is a waste…
As for those listed
Milsap and Odom are probably the best. Not sure I would take Biedrins — those guys were desperate to unload that contract the minute they signed it. Camby’s is good but too short term to compare, Okur was paid $70m by the Jazz as opposed to Hedo’s $50m, Nene I love, and Okafor is making out like a bandit on that deal.
We’ll see. You might be right but there’s nothing that can happen in the next 30 and probably 60 days that would convince me of it unless he brings guns to the locker room and gets suspended.
Too many guys have come through he and shown that an adjustment period is needed to pass judgement after four games and a preseason
Raising Arizona Sports at SB Nation Arizona twitter: @sethpo
HAHAHA LOL @ the apostrophe
That was funny. I don’t get why doesn’t Gentry start Warrick already. i do believe he’s earned the starting PF spot already. Hedo would so much better as a bench player. if we take all our starting 5’s out at the same time, we’d still have a very decent, and very good actually, lineup on the floor. Goran JDud Childress Hedo Frye. I think that’s a pretty deadly lineup. Shooters all around!!! Come’on Suns…We have the best damn bench in the NBA!

Same thing is happening with Hedo as a starter IMO
The switch would help both of them out. Warrick is Nash’s best pnr partner, and Hedo never touches the ball when Nash is on the floor.

that's what i'm taling about
Both Hedo and Warrick are new on this team…but it seems that Warrick has adopted much better and faster to the SUNS system than Hedo. Hence, why i think starting Hackim would be much more beneficial to us. Hackim can be our 20/8 guy…which is exactly what we need right now. This will allow Hedo to do whatever he wants with the bench players. Goran Jdud and Childress are great playing off the ball…And Frye giving picks and our spot up shooter. easy Basketball.
