I saw a poll on NBA.com the other day that got me thinking: Which team has been the most suprising this year? Their candidates were the Celtics, Hawks, Hornets, Rockets and Warriors (at least, I think they were, maybe someone can clarify this).
I can see where NBA.com is coming from in regards to the Hornets and Hawks. I personally thought the Hornets would suck because of all the trade talk about the 2nd best PG in the league (you know who's first =D), as well as David West getting older, no solid backup PG (hahaha YOU try telling me Jerryd Bayless is a solid backup PG with a straight face, not after Grant destroyed him in the playoffs) etc. etc. etc.
And after Joe Johnson's billion-dollar contract, everyone (including myself and the rest of the BSOTS'ers) thought they had overpaid for everyone on their roster (except for Jamal Crawford of course, who might not be getting paid at all). So it did surprise me when I looked at the results so far and saw they were undefeated. Hopefully this changes tonight/this afternoon.
For me though, I absolutely thought that the Rockets were the most suprising team. Why? They haven't got an undefeated streak? They haven't had any mind-blowing performances other than 3 quarters against the Lakers? Yao Ming hasn't performed at an All-Star level?
The thing is, this is exactly the sort of thing that everyone thought would happen. "The Rockets are back", "Houston's back baby!" and yada yada yada and so on. Many people predicted a return to the playoffs for the Rockets, myself included, so to see them languishing at the bottom of the Western Conference with an undefeated unvictorious streak, well, that certainly surprised me.
What do you BSOTS'ers think? Maybe our Phoenix Suns have surprised you with their hard-working, hustling play that you wanted but didn't think would happen? Maybe they haven't lived up to your expectations? Maybe another Pacific Division team has caught your eye; the Clippers and their new star Blake Griffin, or the Kings and their improved record over last year (I jest lol) or maybe the Warriors and Monta Ellis' commited approach to actually wanting to work with the team has surprised you?
You might even make a mention of the Eastern Conference. Has the Apostrophe surprised you with his Triple Double play (Points, Rebounds, Turnovers) ? Did you think the Bulls would be better (then again, Boozer is injured)? Maybe the Nets have impressed with you with actually getting a win?
Anyway, start posting your thoughts, tuning your radio's, unplugging your telephones, get a bowl of your favourite basketball food and drink and sit down in front of your monitor. Go the Suns! Time to beat those surprising Hawks.
