Suns Look to Showcase Improved Defense Against Golden State
Well with a three day break at the beginning of a week just coming off of a Thanksgiving holiday, not having a Suns game to tune into at night has made returning to work as usual even that much more difficult.
I don't know about you - but I'm tired of hearing all this jibber-jabber about trust/communication/defense/rebounding and gellin' like a felon. The time for talk is over. It's ‘go' time. Time to put your money where your mouth is. Put your ‘game-face' on and go to war. Man-up and grow some - you get the idea.
Redunkulous clichés aside, we are all waiting eagerly to see the fruits of this recent abundance of extra focus on defense. It's been written on the wall... about a bajillion times - defense and rebounding. I could think of only a few better teams to put that to the test against besides the Golden State Warriors who we will face up tonight.
You wanna test your dribble penetration and avoid giving up a zillion AND 1's? How about we bring in my boys Monta Ellis and Stephen Curry. You wanna test your cajones on the glass homes? Meet my little friends David Lee, Andris Biedrins and Looooouuuuu Amundson! Okay, so Lou might be sidelined still and we're getting lucky since Brandan Wright is questionable for the game tonight, but for everything else I think you need to know about the game - jump it fools.
So which defense will show up tonight? Will be broken like it was Sunday night in Denver? Where despite the season's best offensive performance with 133 points on 51% shooting outscoring the Nuggs 60-48 in the paint (whoduthunk), the Suns managed to crap out their worst defensive performance as well against a Carmelo-less squad. How's that for bi-polarity?
Now I'm done ranting about the disappointing D because you all know we've beat that horse to death, and in fact - you all know I'm still a big believer that this team will make the proper adjustments necessary to right the ship. Let's move back to the bright side.
Match-ups
Now the official game notes still have Hedo in the starting line-up, and to be honest I've heard Hak will start again so let me know if anyone hears an official word out there. Also - we'll see what happens with Grant Hill's infected toe, dude is a gladiator so I'm sure he'll play.
Nash v. Curry - Always a treat to watch Nash school one of the best young PG's in the game, conversely it's always a treat to watch Steph Curry period.
JRich v. Ellis - Two guys that know how to score in spectacular fashion. I'm expecting Ellis to have AT LEAST 10 FTA tonight if not somewhere around 40,000. But still Rich ‘the Man' and the team's leading scorer and despite a slow start on Sunday was still able to drop a 39 and 10 bomb on Denver's guards. In the horribly mumbled and easy to ignore words of Scott Williams, "He is a man on fire - you know - like that Denzel Washington Movie..." Cool Scott, yeah.
Hill v. Wright - Hill has been playing out of his mind as of late and has been doing a little bit of everything, especially the type of everything that includes guarding everyone. Get it? Again tonight he'll start out guarding Wright who's hot and cold but in the Warriors last game was definitely hot (pause) and dropped 30 points. I think it's safe to assume that if we are going to see anyone step up and take all the ‘defense' talk to heart it will be made manifest in a Grant Hill display of passion. If his toe isn't a huge issue he might have 10 rebounds and have taken 3 charges by half-time.
Warrick v. Lee and Frye v. Biedrins- This will be something to watch, even if Hedo starts - whoever plays against Lee and Biedrins will really need to keep their focus and find out where they are at all times. Get physical - box out, use your rump - sell the foul, secure the rebound, MAKE SOMEONE BLEED.... Maybe that's taking it a little far. I know for a fact that an easy way for Hak and Frye to get the upper hand on this duo of Warriors would be to attack them in the paint on the offensive end. Lee and Biedrins aren't exactly the best defenders in their own right and can easily be taken out of their game if they get into quick foul trouble.
Other Notes
I'm going to rip this off of Vince Kozar (the Suns' statistician extraordinaire) straight up - but I give him all the credit. I know many have been moaning and groaning about the Suns record and how the team has been playing so far this year, but consider the following before we continue to slop on heavy the negativity:
- Twelve of the Suns' 17 games have come against a playoff team from 2009-10
- Phoenix has played 10 of 17 games against a 50-win team from a season ago
- Phoenix was the ONLY NBA team to play its first four games against a 50-win team from 2009-10
- The Suns' 17 games have included four meetings with Western Conference division leaders (LA twice, SA, UT) and six overall against a division leader (Orlando, Chicago)
- Phoenix just completed a four-games-in-five-days stretch in the midst of an eight-games-in-13-days span. Phoenix had not had two-straight days off since Nov. 9-11.
- The Suns' seven home games are tied for the fewest in the Western Conference, second-fewest in the NBA overall.
Now I'm not making excuses - but with the roster and chemistry experiments very much in full developmental stages to be right around .500 at this point isn't like the failures of some other local sports team who also lost some pretty good players and needed to make adjustments for this year... I'm just sayin'.
Another things to watch - TURNOVERS. The Warriors are numero uno right now in Steals in the whole NBA, and with Steph Curry and Monta Ellis as your ridiculously fast and crafty backcourt there's no mystery as to why they are. Let's hope the Suns can protect the ball.
Earl Barron - put up 7 boards in 10 minutes on Sunday and IMO had some pretty ‘enforcer-ish' fouls. I liked what I saw. Maybe we'll see a little more of @earldee tonight.
Planet Purple a.k.a. the Bench - Let's hope Hedo can once again provide better offense coming off the bench like he did for a short while in the Denver game and also lets hope that these guys collectively can pull it together. Much has already been written about their struggles so we'll see if they can work out some more of the kinks - communicate better, and hopefully shoot a better percentage from the line... I'm talking to you Dragon.
Now for some linkage and here's to a positive win and getting back to .500.

The post I read had Grant out tonight and the immediate future with a sprained foot from practice.
Anyone have any updates on that. This could be an interesting opportunity if that is correct. Hedo could start at his natural three position and Hak could still start. Or, we could give Duds the start in hopes of breaking his funk and letting Hedo bring his firepower off of the bench.

Great stuff, Eutychus...
You shore ‘nuff call it with attacking Biedrins and Lee…Poor defenders are an understatement with these two rebounding fiends….Let’s get JRich and Hak attacking the rim quickly and put them on the bench..With these two glass cleaners out the game and/or being non-factors…… I definitely like the odds in favor of the Suns…
STAT may be gone but the Suns will rise....!
Manufacturing fire?
DId anyone hear Nash’s comments that the Suns “chore” is to “manufacture” fire. That the team doesn’t have enforcers… That they need a personality transformation….
Not that I necessarily disagree with this, but I don’t know how this change is supposed to take place…
I will say this much, last year when the bench came on the floor they were scrappy and tenacious (if not terrifying), but this year it just doesn’t seem to be there. Something’s missing.
Doesn’t sound good when the team leader is calling for a heart transplant…
Never confuse activity with achievement.
you mean this?
It’s not good, which is why he’s saying it. What’s worse is it needing to happen and not being said.
Nash is very impatient this season. He’s not gonna tolerate a let down and he’s setting the tone / sending the message early in the season.
Btw – the Lakers lost to the Grizz (4th in a row) and the Spurs lost to the Clippers. These are LONG seasons.

Fire in sports much like in real life needs to be fed and maintained. Not news here – the identity of last year’s bench in itself seemed to motivate and give them the fire they needed. It didn’t happen right away / early in the season either.

True enough about the long seasons...
Right now the Lakers seem on the cruise control the Spurs normally take in the early season…As for the Spurs losing to the Clippers…Every dog has it’s day….
When we play hard, and smart, we can play with these teams and win…We don’t have the luxury of playing on cruise control and still making the playoffs with a 2 seed…

EXTEND JASON RICHARDSON!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Absolutely
Maybe it’s not the make up of our team, personality-wise, and so sometimes you have to manufacture that. Right now, I think that’s our chore — to manufacture a little fire and find a way to make it contiguous and find a way for guys who maybe aren’t naturally the most energetic or outgoing people to lift each other up and make everyone feel like we can do it together
It looks like some very astute fellow is already on top of keeping the Suns faithful well informed.
For some reason it seems even worse when I hear the sound byte than when I read it.
I have a question (for the sake of argument) – why do the Suns have a team made up of people who don’t collectively have energy or “fire”? Why is the construction of the team such that it has a personality disorder?

I'm not sure what you're keying in on
that is leading you to feel the issue is so profound and mysterious?
I think the testiness we are seeing in Nash and Grant Hill (who remember are the leaders of this team and who are trying to be more vocal) really are a combo of a few things – first like Seth said, Nash is impatient probably because he knows he’s at the end of his career and can see the proximity of potential in his teammates and himself – couple this with the notion that a team takes on the personality of the coach and you can see a little bit of Gentry in things the players have been saying. There is an urgency no doubt but I wouldn’t call it a crisis or a fundamental character issue at all.

Dr. 2009-10 and Mr. 2010-11
Just wondering out loud about the proposition of contrived intensity…
Can they flip a switch? Did the additions (Chilly, Turk, and Warrick) minus the subtractions (Amare, Lou, and the Blur) result in less heart and competitiveness? It seems to me that maybe it did….
Lou was an energy player. Amare showed lots of emotion on the court that his teammates could feed off of. Was this what Nash was referring to when he said they weren’t “energetic” or “outgoing”?
If the personality of the team has changed I’m assuming it must lie in these changes. Did the front office bring in players with personalities that are vanilla?
I know the Suns lack in size, but do they also lack in emotion and intensity?
Never confuse activity with achievement.

All Warrick has to do is yell, “and 1!” and scream a lot. I don’t expect Turk to change. Chilly just needs to go all Tarzan jujitsu on em.
Don't trade Dudley!
Gotta remember too
Chill is playing with an effing broken finger. He normally loves and is addicted to slamming EVERYTHING hard, but with a broken flange he can’t be as expressive and demonstrative/emotional with his dunks and drives to the rim as I’m sure he’d like to
They say "don't swim with the sharks", but I'm faster than sharks so it's not a big deal...
I already knew that yet for some odd reason I forgot. It just had to be the finger on his dunking hand…
Don't trade Dudley!
You can tell he's in pain throughout the game if you watch too
remember Kobe last year had the same thing and it really wasn’t completely healed until a month or so before playoffs – he even had to resort to shooting left handed at times because of the pain and Kobe is a self-declared tough guy
They say "don't swim with the sharks", but I'm faster than sharks so it's not a big deal...
It most definitely is a switch
Who would have thought that Lou or Jared Dudley, or even Goran Dragic could bring the emotion and intensity they have at times. I don’t think Dudley once let out his primal court scream in Charlotte, it was a switch or a process that was primed and initiated throughout the course of a season.
I have seen Warrick, Childress and even Turk express that kind of contagious emotion in the past, it’s just something that will happen as the team continues to find it’s mojo/rhythm/‘cohesiveness’/whatever-you-want-to-call-it.
They say "don't swim with the sharks", but I'm faster than sharks so it's not a big deal...
Yea, I haven’t seen Dudz scream that much this year. Last year he was going crazy.
Don't trade Dudley!
Yes
these things happen during the course of a season…unless there’s something going on we don’t know about. Some kind of personal strife or whatever that is weighing on the team for whatever reason.
In 2008, I wasn’t too worried when they went through the stretch of playing bad after starting 10-2 but it turned out there were real issues going on that resulted in Diaw and Bell getting traded in Dec 08 and ended up w/ Porter being fired.
We’ll have to wait and see if they bounce back or not.

Don't trade Dudley!
my personal opinion
is that we’re making more of Nash missing Amare than Nash is. Of course Nash misses the easy buckets and talks about it all the time, but does he talk about lost leadership or defense or anything else besides easy buckets? They were never two peas in a pod except for 3-4 minutes a game of actual p-n-r action “in action”.
Just my two cents.

I reverted to the ol' standby line
“We’re still the champs!”
I will still use it during the Finals, even if the Lakers aren’t in the Finals, and if they aren’t I’ll have to retire it once the Finals are done.

as much as it pains me to say it
this is just a glitch for the lakers they’re even better then last year (blake was a great pick up)…check TBJ, they’ve been standing up for your boy

but even then you've got the

They say "don't swim with the sharks", but I'm faster than sharks so it's not a big deal...
The games themselves have not been very pretty; kobe is taking some pretty dumb shots in the clutch; shots that werent really that necessary.
La will have a day to rest and prepare for the kings; the lakers will absolutely MASSACRE the kings

So are the Warriors a good team to test your defense on, with their athleticism, speed, and scoring prowess?

not the point
I don’t know, but that’s beside the point…

Actually, I don’t think they are.
The way I look at it tonight is that the Warriors will get their points and we will get ours. That’s just how it is when we play them. I hope we get more points though.
Don't trade Dudley!
Gotcha. Then who would be the ideal test of your defense? The Lakers?
