Struggling Suns Looking For Big Win Vs. Detroit Pistons
In some ways I feel like this is a statement game. The Phoenix Suns have been humiliated twice in the past few days and it would suck to end the year on a bad note with a loss to the (11-21) Pistons. I'm with a lot of you in that I feel like the Suns just need to get a win, any win to stop the bleeding. Another loss would just add salt to the wound and with what appears to be a now shaky, chemistry they can't afford much more of those.
The former "Bad Boys" are coming off of an impressive win vs the Boston Celtics in which their starting PG Rodney Stuckey didn't play(probable for tonight's game- flu). Tracy McGrady utilized the point for them and collected 8 assist to go with his 21 points on a 7-11 shooting. He's been playing better recently and so has Chris Wilcox who collected 10 points and 8 rebounds on 4-4 shooting to follow up his 15 and 8 the night before in Charlotte. Not to mention Austin Daye who came off the bench for 12 points on 5-7 shooting. He's a nice, young big-man who can hit the three. These are guys that can hurt the Suns if they don't come prepared, or read the scouting reports...
I was quite disappointed with the Suns the other night as most of you were; mainly the defense. According to Nash they were trying, but were quite hesitant due to not really getting the scheme. I thought Dudley said something interesting-
"Maybe it's film, maybe it's calling people out, maybe showing them what we have to do...We could defiantly talk a lot more, were over-thinking"
Originally, I thought this was something they already did? I'd expect that they'd watch the film and the coach would call out specific players for their mistakes and show them how to fix it. I guess, that's not how all coaches are; I never played organized basketball, so I'm not sure?
According to Dudley, he believes the awful defense is due to mental mistakes more so than effort. Nash kind of said the same thing. I think this is due to over-complicating the schemes. Whatever Gentry had them doing was just too much and the team just isn't ready for it. Apparently, he realized that too and has simplified his defensive plan. Hopefully, that works because they can't continue to expect to beat anybody if they let them shoot open jumpers, rebound missed shots and drive to the line with no fear. They played like a bunch of softies and they need to toughen up.
Maybe it's just me, but I want to see more emotion, more fire, more passion, more yelling, scrapping, banging... in their play and not the kind that comes from frustration, but the kind that comes from the heart and desire to win? The Suns need to get back that intensity they use to have last year. Lets face it, the starters miss Amar'e the bench misses Frye, but too bad, things change. They've officially got their backs to the wall and now everybody is calling them out-
The Suns are even worse on defense than you think- "I'm not sure people truly understand just how awful they've been this season"- Matt McHale
Sad thing is that it's true, no argument there. Things are going to get tough for the Suns now that the Media has finally noticed their historically, awful defense. However, they can't let that get to them. They have to be strong emotionally. They have to go out there and prove the doubters wrong. They need to play with an edge! Lol, I feel like they need to get a bit more "bad" or "rebellious". Somewhere a long the lines of this-
Well, I still have hope that they can turn things around and I believe they will.

Phoenix Suns New Year's Eve Plan Includes Some Detroit Pistons In A 'Need A Win' Game - SB Nation Arizona
The Phoenix Suns feel like they need to get this win tonight over the Detroit Pistons. They are right.
[Note by Seth Pollack, 12/31/10 12:39 PM MST ]
Some quick notes and quotes from shootaround:
Vince Carter:
"One game's not going to do it, I feel like I still need a few more but I feel more comfortable because of the practices but it's nothing like going through it at game speed. I feel like quarter-by-quarter I get more comfortable."
"Just playing against (the Suns) for so long you kind of have a feel for it. It's nothing like actually running the ins and outs of it, then you kind of see the big picture of what they're trying to accomplish. I say that because that's how I break down offenses. You can see plays run and be like, 'OK, fine. It's for him, it's for him, they're going to do this.' But when you see the big picture and reasons you're running it and why you have guys in particular positions, you (understand) it's a pretty good play. I've said that a couple of times."
"Just watching him (Tracy McGrady) the last couple of days he looks pretty good so he's back to his old self. I'm sure there's going to be some trash talking out there tonight," Carter said. "I'm just glad to see him back out there."
Alvin Gentry:
"Intensity level was a lot better yesterday. Not that we've not been playing hard, we've just been doing a poor job of containing guys and having guys drive by us. And it's not one guy, it's a couple here and there and a few more and a few more and before you know it it's too much for us to win a game on."
"I think we're playing hard. I think we're competing. I think we just have to do a better job of guarding the ball and keeping guys in front of us and doing a good job on screen and rolls."
"As I said to our guys, we still have a ton of game left to play but it's something that we need to get corrected because we're already trying to put three new guys into the mix and so that's going to take some getting used to. But defensively, we have to be better. We have to improve in that area right away."
"I wouldn't say frustrating. I would say I'm a little bit disappointed. But in defense of the guys too, we've tried to change a few things and do something differently because with the personnel that we originally had here we thought that would work best. That didn't work out so now we're going back to what we did originally with different personnel so it's been a little bit of a trying time for them too."
"I don't totally blame the players. I have to take some of the responsibility on that too because I changed what we were doing and thought it would work best for the guys we had here before we made the trade and now we're going to go back to what we were originally doing because I think it will help the guys that we have here now."
"I've been really happy with the focus and effort we've had down here (on the practice floor) but that's still got to translate to doing the job in the game. We'll get a gauge of it tonight."
"We're at simplicity where accountability is pretty easy to gauge. We're going to be a simplistic team that tries to be proactive. That's what we're going to be."
"We've got one thing thing we're going to do on screen and rolls, and post defense and isolations and things like that and we're not going to try and do three or four things."
"We've got to get back to keeping (teams) out of the 50 percent (shooting) range. It puts way way way too much pressure on the offense. If they're scoring every time it puts pressure on you to score every time. Somewhere along the line if you're getting stop it takes some of the pressure off your offense. We're very good offensively but we can't be that good."
"We've got to develop some consistency on the road and at home."
Will take a look at playing with a small line up with one big and three small guys and Steve.
Not certain the Warrick and Childress won't play. Go by feel based on match-ups. Those guys need to keep themselves ready to play which is difficult to do.
"I think he's (McGrady) played great. I watched the Boston game the other night and obviously he played really well in that game right there. He seems to be feeling a lot better and he's not an old guy. He's 31 years old, I think, so when he's healthy he's got a lot of basketball left in him."
Ben Gordon when he goes well, they go well and he plays well in this building.
"They've got five guys averaging in double-figures and that's all you need to know about them. There's not one guy you've got to zero in on, there's a bunch of guys you've got to do a good job on."
"We've got to keep working on that situation right there to get the right people out there with (Dragic) and stuff. As I've said, he's got to play a little better but we're going to have to try and surround him with some guys that's going to make the game a little bit easier for him too."

I’ll believe everything our players say when they DO everything they say they’re going to do. It’s all about action. We need this win tonight to stop the bleeding, as Beavis so rightly put it. I’m definitely tuning in tonight. I’ll join the game thread late, but hopefully when I do, our team is doing well.

Seth, any insight on practices as to...
If they’ve been working with Dragic on how to beat the double-teams, traps, and pressures?
Also, any info on that trade idea you tweeted this morning (VC for Murphy & Farmar)? Was that just your opinion or was this something that you’ve heard rumblings about in the organization?
by 7footer on Dec 31, 2010 1:00 PM MST via mobile up reply actions
Gentry refused to get specific on what he’s trying to do w/ Dragic other than having him play better and having him surrounded by the “right guys”.
As for the Carter to the Nets trade, that’s all my and my rosterbation.

I think I did :)
But seriously, not sure on the Farmar part, but I really think Carter to the Nets for Murphy as the core of the deal makes a lot of sense for both teams. This can’t happen until the Nets are truly out of the Melo sweepstakes but once they lose out on him, why wouldn’t they take Vince back for the rest of the season w/ an option for next?
Actually, as I thought about it, Murphy and Farmar probably isn’t enough. I would think they would need to throw in a pick or two.

Atta boy...Aim high!
Though secretly, I think Murphy and Farmar alone would be more than fair. This gives us both a viable PF with range, a back-up PG to help while Dragic is trying to figure things out, and solves our log-jam at the wing.
by 7footer on Dec 31, 2010 2:03 PM MST via mobile up reply actions
VC for Farmar and Murphy leave them about 3 mil short - they should give us a pick.
VC for Harris and Murphy leaves us about 3 mil short, so we should give them a pick.
VC for Murphy and Favors should work out about right – throw in Warrick, and we’re golden!
It is, after all, rosterbation.

and why wouldn’t the Nets do this if they can’t get Melo?
Carter is the biggest name they could get their hands on and he would at least make that team better and bring in fans for the rest of the season. If it works out, they can keep him another year so it’s not like with Melo who is only under contract this season.
I am not a big rosterbator but this one makes so much sense to me.

I tried rosterbating a few times...
But it was messy and left me feeling ashamed. You seem to have a knack for it though.
It could actually help them get Melo.
Denver is looking for Murphy’s expiring – VC’s is much bigger. Depending on which way they went, they might even get another pick to sweeten the deal, and clear another 8 mil to sign other players with. The Harris option is probably the best for them – I doubt they’d give up Favors if they were still going for Melo.

but it’s still a disappointment that the coach has to put him on the floor with guys that make it easier for him…normally, it’s the point guard’s job to make it easier for his teammates.

Dennis Rodman should have been elected to the Hall of Fame long ago. He was the best rebounder of his time and one of the best defenders,. His idiotic personal life is irrelevant.

And to boot, not only was his basketball IQ obviously very high (probably worthy of Steve Nash), but he was very wise about the state of the NBA, and refused to be under David Stern’s thumb.

No I think he should be in the Hall of Fame
I also used to admire his play on the court when I was younger and tired to model my game around his hustle on defense and rebounding. He is a crazy person off the court but on the court he was an amazing athlete.
But he did his job with no ego. He was the ultimate role player.

There are a lot of story lines here. T-Mac & Vinsanity. New defensive scheme. It’s in Phoenix against a bad team, after losing to 2 mediocre teams… This is as must-win as any game this early in the season can be. And they better win comfortably. Go Suns! Quentin Richardson declared after a game-winning shot that it "was like Hamlet. It was a suspense thriller, and I killed them at the end." Amare Stoudemire, when asked to comment on a 22-point third quarter against the Kings, said, "I've got a tendency to jump over some guys' heads and throw it down."
I actually, have no ideal what he’s talking about.
Is he disappointed in the fans because they keep panicking and don’t realize how hard for them it is?
Or is he complimenting the fans on sticking with the team through these hard times?
Gosh, it could go either way.
Don't trade Dudley!
I think he's saying
Thanks to his fans for their support through this difficult time.

Never mind. He was talking about selecting a winner for a contest he had started previously.
“You guys are amazing” = 100s of people submitted why they are Suns fans to try to win tickets to tonight’s game. “This is really hard” = it’s hard to pick a winner.
My bad. I missed his earlier post. Nothing like lacking context!!

Rec'd. Exactly what I was thinking.
I wish we could delete our comments here. I’d like this one to just go away.

OK. I can still make chicken salad out of this.
Nash held a contest on his FB page where people sent in why they’re the biggest Suns fan out there, with the winner getting tickets to tonight’s game. The winner was Erika Hartley. She wrote:
Erika Hartley Hey Steve! My little 7-year-old with autism, Hunter, is a HUGE Suns fan and he’d LOVE to go to the game. One of the few things we can get him to say (And I swear this is true) is GO STEVE NASH! He also says, GO LB!! (He doesn’t really get that LB has been traded.) But he LOVES watching the games. It’s one place he can go and jump and make noise and be himself without people looking at him sideways. Good luck tonight!
Nice story right there.

Yeah, but did you hear about the Nash trade?
I heard that after he went off on the refs the other night, he went up to Sarver’s office and f*****g puched Sarver in the motherf*****g face.
Seriously.
Read it on the Internetz.

I wonder if Nash is a little embarassed by his F bomb-laden outburst the other night.
Sure, he’s passionate and doesn’t mind us all knowing that, but it doesn’t seem like he wants to project an image of himself as a hothead who unleashes profanity-laced tirades. I have to think he doesn’t appreciate the way that became national news.

The one using said profanity-laden outburst questions whether or not Nash appreciates it becoming a story.

Fair enough. What do you think of it?
It was a story whether I use it or not.

In fact, 6 months from now we can go back and pull out every stupid thing that you’ve said out of the archives and humiliate you once again. I won’t do it though, I’m too nice for that. Haremoor on the other hand? He’s probably been saving all the stupid things I’ve said and waiting for the right moment to bring them back and shove them in my face.

A kid in my english class is doing just that. He has a page in his notebook where he writes down any stupid quotes or crazy stories someone brings up. His last name is Dudzinski, and we call him Dudz.

Well, have Suns fans really been sticking with their team through everything? I don’t mean BSOS people; I mean everybody. Even for a metro area with four professional sports teams, the Suns don’t appear to have a rabid fan base, nothing like the people whose enthusiasm led to Veterans’ Memorial Coliseum being nicknamed the “Madhouse on McDowell.” (I won’t try to use the Charles Barkley years as a standard; that would be unfair.) And someone here recently reported that the crowds at US Airways Center aren’t very loud. Is it not true? Am I wrong? I wish.

I can't really answer that question.
Some fans stick around and some bail out at the first signs of tough times. If Nash was talking to his Facebook followers, it’s probably true that they are some of his most loyal supporters.
I grew up in Phoenix, and left there in 1994, going back to visit family 2-3 times per year now. Phoenix has changed drastically in those 16 years, and the sports landscape is one of the things that has changed. When I was growing up, the Suns were the only pro major pro team in town (AAA baseball doesn’t count), so the Suns and Sun Devils had incredibly dedicated fan bases. They were the only games in town. If you were a sports fan, you were a Suns and Devils fan. Now, the Cardinals and D-Backs are in town, as well as the Coyotes. Cable and satellite TV allows fans to watch a huge variety of games, so the sports fan has many more options now.
Attendance at games is not a good barometer, IMO. I’m more of a “watch the game on TV” fan, and not just because I don’t live in Phoenix. The game is more comfortable from my couch, I can follow along watching in HD just as well as at the game, the food and drinks are cheaper and better, the bathroom is much closer, and never a long line! And, of course, there’s the cost issue. NBA game tickets are expensive! If somebody can’t afford to go, or just wants to use their limited financial resources on something else, I can’t fault them or indict a team’s fanbase because of it, especially in this down economy.
