Sacramento Kings joining the hunt for Phoenix Suns Amare Stoudemire?

The latest rumor according to Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo Sports has the Sacramento Kings discussing a trade with the Phoenix Suns for their All-Star Forward Amare Stoudemire centered on a returning piece of Kevin Martin. The Sacramento Kings would be an interesting trade partner with the Suns and have the ability to offer young talent, draft picks, and ending contracts, all of which the Suns reportedly want back for Stoudemire.

Star-divide

The main piece in this trade involves Stoudemire and The Kings Kevin Martin. There are no other issues discussed regarding this trade but it would probably look something like this…

http://games.espn.go.com/nba/tradeMachine?tradeId=yf48xo5

Phoenix Suns trade:

Amare Stoudemire

Sacramento Kings trade:

Kevin Martin 4 years 9.7 million

Jason Thompson 2 years 2 million

Hilton Armstrong 1 year 2.8 million

Unprotected first round draft pick

Kevin Martin has all-star potential but is consistently injured and because of this has missed many games over the past few seasons. He is a great shooter and could thrive in a situation where a good point guard created open shots for him. However he is not a great defender or rebounder and is still owed a considerable amount of money over the next 4 years. (Kind of like an Amare at the Sg position, can put up points but don't expect much else on a consistent basis) The Suns would really be biting the bullet taking on Martin and would not help their lack of defensive toughness. His contract and injury history is enough to scare most away.

Jason Thompson is a young player that has shown potential to be a great power forward in this league. He can rebound, block shots, and is developing a good offensive game. Thompson would be the replacement for Amare Stoudemire in the Suns future power forward position.

Hilton Armstrong would be the filler throw in with an expiring $2.8 million dollar contract.

The other huge benefit to this deal would be the Kings unprotected draft pick in the next year’s draft.

This trade could benefit both teams and might be possible if Amare would agree to sign with the Kings or was sent there via a sign and trade. A core of Amare and Tyreke Evans along with other young talent could entice the Kings to make this change. They are a struggling franchise and are desperate to turn things around to win and generate ticket sales.

The Phoenix Suns would have to take a huge chance on Kevin Martin with his outstanding injury history and lengthy contract. Jason Thompson could be the franchise's future power forward. They could save money with Armstrong's expiring deal and the unprotected draft pick might be enough to seal the deal.

Would that be enough to trade for Amare?
I would hate to have KMart over iggy but Thompson and their very low draft pick does sound nice?

I LOVE Jason Thompson.

Dude’s a beast. I’ve wanted him on the Suns dating back to last year’s draft.

Plus

Having an unprotected first rounder from a lottery team is always nice.

KMart could be a trade piece if acquired as well. Other teams have shown interest in him even though I’m not a big fan we could trade him.

i like jason thompson too and that pick they have will be super low.

We would have to sign and trade amare though without letting him know where we were sending him

Why would we have to do a sign and trade?

Hawes has shown that he can fill it up, unfortunately, he’s insanely inconsistent.

But the real reason anyone would want to come to SacTown these days is to play with Tyreke. The kid is an absolute beast.

well now I might change my tune a bit

I DO NOT want KMart and his injury prone big contract but through in JT and an unprotected 1st rd pick and I could be sold based on the idea that JRich would be moved quickly (this summer) or even KMart could be dealt somewhere in the east for other pieces I like more…

I agree.

I don’t like KevMart. But I do love JT (yes, both Jason Thompson and Justin Timberlake…don’t judge, ha), and an unprotected first rounder makes me salivate (figuratively).

Ehhh.

The Kings definitely have some pieces I’d love to add to this team, but I’m not a Kevin Martin fan. Not with that contract and injury history. As others have mentioned, Jason Thompson is pretty solid and snagging a pick would be nice, but the idea of Martin jacking 20 shots a game and being hurt for half of them is horrifying to me.

Kmart would definately be the toughest part of the deal.
In the right situation he could avg 25+ a game.
But he seems so weak and is ALWAYS injured. There are other teams interrested in him. Maybe the Suns could turn around and trade. Especially if he can play good with Nash creating shots for him. but if the wind blows he might get injured again. JT and the draft pick would be real nice

The Kings would absolutely NEVER do this...

I would love this and would do this even if Amare was going to stay for a decent contract but the Kings would never do this… Thompson is a really really good young PF, Martin a realy realy good young SG, and an unprotected 1st from a lottery team… we can only dream =)

They definately have nice assets to offer. considering the suns want young talent, draft pick, and expiring contracts. that is right on with what they have.

Once again....picky picky

Picky…If we couldn’t agree to a contract with Amare how would you NOT want to do this deal? Thompson is a great young talent who already can rebound with the best of them, just needs to develop some more post moves and a little range to his game and he could easily be a 17/10 guy. Martin, who has some injury history is only 27 and does everyone forget we are the Phoenix Suns and have the best training staff in sports? Grant Hill and Steve have been kept healthy. Shaq was the healthiest he was in years wearing Orange. Also, you can’t pin it on Amare…He had freak injuries with the eye and the Knee which he has fully recovered from. Martin has played in a system where he HAD to be the man and up until this year (which he has been injured anyways) he has never had a great player to play off of. In our system with Steve at the helm Martin would have wide open jumpers and slashes/cuts to the lane ALL day. How would you guys not want a 30+ppg scorer for 10-11 million dollars? We save a few bucks in Hilton’s expiring deal then next year we can pawn off J-Rich, get under the luxury tax and keep management as well as the fans happy. With the revenue we make from staying competitive and hopefully making the playoffs will help pay the luxury tax anyways. Most of the time teams don’t get full price for there stars, this is a perfect deal for us…Although from I don’t think from Kings perspective this would be a deal worth doing unless they can keep there draft pick…Although I think all of that would be dissolved after the first Amare/Tyreke pick and roll or pick and pop is completed.

Amare and Tyreke would be lethal together. It could benefit the Kings as long as they could keep him.

The more I look at it its a good option for the Suns if really out there. But if it came down to it I would rather have iggy then kmart, kmart is soft but can light it up so he has his benefits.

Rumoured Suns - Kings Trade Possibility

And why would we possibly want another defensively challenged guard?

by macpagni on Feb 10, 2010 11:34 PM MST reply actions

salary matching

The problem with the Kings, besides that they don’t clearly have players the Suns need, is that most of their players have small salaries, making it hard to trade them for someone’s larger salary.

the above trade goes through the espn trade machine successfully
