New Twist In Amare Stoudemire Trade Drama Involves The Chicago Bulls
Based on reports from Sports 620 KTAR, the Suns are trying to get a third team involved in a trade for Amare Stoudemire. We've heard for awhile the that Suns want Andre Iguodala. Today we learned that the Suns are also interested in Luol Deng from the Chicago Bulls or possibly Kirk Hinrich.
The deal would work like this:
Suns would send Amare to Cleveland and J.J. Hickson would come to the Suns. Zydrunas Ilgauskas with his expiring $11.5m contract that has 75% of his salary already paid would be moved to that 3rd team with that player coming back to Phoenix.
The 76ers have made it pretty clear that they are not interested in taking back an expiring deal in return for Andre so that seems like a long shot to me.
The Bulls however, are very interested in getting further under the salary cap and so a deal like this would be of more value to them. All reports are they would love to dump Kirk Hinrich who's owed $9m next year and $8m in 2011/12 and would probably do this in a heart beat.
I like Kirk a lot but I don't see how he fits on the Suns team. He's a great defensive PG and would be a solid backup for Nash but for that salary why would the Suns want to add him to back court bench that already includes Barbosa and Dragic?
Luol Deng is a more interesting option despite the $51m he's owed over the next four years. He's an aggressive wing player who can both defend and put up points. At 6'9" he can also play the PF at times. 18 points and 7.4 rebounds from a guy that can shoot the three and shore up the SF for years to come...not bad.
The Bulls however, are going to want more than just Big Z's expiring.
Perhaps the Suns make this deal with the Heat that sends Amare to Miami, Beasley and an expiring to the Bulls and the Heat's 1st round pick to Phoenix and the Raptors 1st round pick to the Bulls.
- Chicago replaces Deng with Beasley and saves about $6.8m going into the summer and leaves them with about $18m under the cap. They unload a long term contract which gives the more room for Rose and Noah when it's time to pay them and they also get to see how Beasley works out and still have cap room to go after Bosh or another free agent.
- Miami gets Amare to help try and keep Wade and they give up Beasley, expirings and two 1st round picks.
- Suns get Deng and a 1st round pick maybe some filler to make up about $1.5m.
This looks better for the Bulls but worse for the Suns than a Cleveland deal where:
- Cleveland gets Amare
- Suns get Hickson and Deng
- Bulls get Big Z and...Dudley? Clark? It would take something else to get the Bulls to give up Deng
Bottom line, the Suns are trying to find a way to get more than just Hickson and the Cavs draft pick and this will likely go down to the wire. Stay tuned!

The worst thing we can do at this point
is take back a cap-clogging contract we don’t need. Deng and Hinrich are both cap-clogging contracts we don’t need.
I do like Deng on the Suns
But his contract is so … ugly. I don’t support sending Dudley or Clark away just to get Deng. I guess if I had to choose. I’d prefer the Cavaliers/Bulls trade, where we get back Hickson and Deng.
From Cavs beat writer Brian Windhorst's twitter:
“There are some indications out there that the Suns are getting close to giving Cavs an answer on Amar’e. As in very soon.”
Bad from a luxury tax perspective.
If it’s important to the Suns to avoid paying the luxury tax, this deal does nothing on that end. Deng is owed a ton of money through 2013/2014. If they traded directly for Z, they could avoid the luxury tax this year.
Depends what’s most important to Sarver.
Hold Up
If we’re talking Deng why not just trade him to the bulls for Deng+Gibson+Jerome james (+ pick). I’d much prefer gibson to hickson.
The only one of those contracts that is expiring is James
effectively the Bulls would add $4million to their books next offseason but already have one of the guys they were going to pursue.
Hickson can jump through the roof. He’s probably a more explosive leaper than LeBron, with a lower basketball IQ.
When he develops a jumper, and he will, his ceiling is easily as high as Amar’e’s. No joke.
That all depends on how low his basketball IQ actually is.
ROdney Carney is very very fast and can jump really really high.
That doesn’t make him a good basketball player
by jemagee on Feb 17, 2010 2:54 PM MST up reply actions
Hickson has no upside at all. He’s the same kind of player Gibson is, it’s just that the guy is the 5th offensive option on a team that has always one/two guys with two defenders on them (Lebron and Shaq). Of course he scores more than Taj, he’s being left alone every single play.
Everything else is pretty much the same between these two.
I don't like any deal that gets rid of Clark
I think we drafted a diamond in the rough. Stick with the kid and he will pay dividends.
They say "don't swim with the sharks", but I'm faster than sharks so it's not a big deal...
Agree
But Dudley’s the type of role player every good team needs. So I’m really hesitant to get rid of him, too.
If you feel you can add a start at some point – you don’t let a role player hold it up – role players are easier to find than stars and sometimes they just shine for a moment and then burn out (see James Posey, stealing money from New Orleans)
Role players are like middle relievers in baseball, they are much more abundant and often fungible

It always hurts trading away fan favorites. I’m a Bulls fan and I tell you its just not the same without Nocioni. It took me a while to get over Q when he got traded from the Suns.
I’ve always worried more aout the health of the team – i wasn’t sorry to see Iverson leave philly – i was just sorry they didn’t trade him when i thought the should have (2002 after brown jumped ship) and gotten morevalue for him.
Many fans miss reggie evans in philadelphia – i’m not sure why – cause he sucks

But if we move Clark to other team/s
then he’ll probably reach his potential just like any other picks the Suns have traded and then he’ll be added to the list of players that turned out to be good when we should’ve had more patience to develop him.
Then after 2 or 3 years I’ll probably bitch about it here in BSOTS that the list of those players are growing and we should have kept him…

Loul Deng is the Bulls Iguodala – good luck trying to get him :)
As for Hinrich – if his contract didn’t so totally blow he’d be on the lakers already.
I’ve read rumors today that the cavs are more interested in a wizards deal and that the heat are desperately looking for a 3rd team cause the heat have nothing the suns want (including the positionless beasley)
by jemagee on Feb 17, 2010 2:52 PM MST reply actions
Its too bad about Iggy. I heard that there was already an offer made by the Heat in a 3 team deal that would have landed the 76ers Beasley, the Heat Amare and the Suns Iggy. That wasn’t the whole deal just the main parts. It got turned down by Philly because they got cold feet. They didn’t want to build around Beasley. I hear the 76er fans were pretty mad.
Yeah
i’m sure both of them were upset about that trade not going through
by DaveJD on Feb 17, 2010 2:58 PM MST up reply actions 1 recs
I’m not sure who you heard it from – but no – they weren’t very mad – cause Beasley is over rated and not ‘cheap’ cause he was the second pick in the draft going on to his 3rd year…he’s not inexpensive, and he’s not a core player…
The sixers also turned down a ‘better’ offer of T-mac and budinger (because of t-mac’s hugely expiring contract) for Andre/Dalembert.
The sixers GM is kind of a moron

I think..I don’t have strong feeling but both have similar contracts
Deng is a true SF that can play PF and is 6’9" which is much more valuable than a SG
Deng can shoot the three better

But I’ve also heard bad things about him settling for jump shots, etc

So you don’t follow baseball – like the draft – very closely do you?
So – baseball players who get big money after being underpaid for years – it’s ok

Of the major names that aren't on rookie contracts
LeBron James, Dwight Howard, Kevin Garnett, and Kobe Bryant are a few.
Compared to what he produces this year – and his age – and injury proneness – KG is probably grossly over paid this year – he’s barely contributing – but hey fans still voted him into the all star game (and no one talked about that injustice)
Dwight Howard – The defensive rebounding machine with no offense game and worse FT shooting than Fat Shaq ever had?
by jemagee on Feb 17, 2010 3:24 PM MST up reply actions
I'll maybe agree about Garnett
But dude gives 150% all the time. With Dwight, it is a bit of a case of supply and demand. Not many big guys out there that average 15 rebounds a game. Plus, he’s a leader on that team. Leadership, passion, effort, and culpability go a long way with me. That’s what separates max players from good players, imo.
But dude gives 150% all the time.
Dudes a punk, dudes a front runnner, dude punched a team mate acorss the face cause he was beating him in a game of one on one and his (KGs) friends were laughing at him.
And this ‘150%’ garbage is one of the more tiresome things sports fans say its liek saying ‘he wants to win’ – please show me athletes who want to lose.
KG is a punk – a broken down punk – and an over paid punk
And the only reason the Celtics win is because they are so physical when playing defense that the refs ignore all the fouls or the game would never finish

PS – effort doesn’t always equal ability.
This from a fan of Bobby Abreu who had to listen to idiots bad mouth him while he was a phillie for ‘not playing the right way’ or ‘not trying’ – cause when you’re watching through a tv you can determine effort.
And dealing with many of the same fans who loved the ‘effort’ of reggie evans – who cares if he has no talent an no positive impact on the game – at least it LOOKS like he’s trying.
Believing you can determine effort level by watching a guy on tv (or even in person) is just a fools errand
by jemagee on Feb 17, 2010 3:37 PM MST up reply actions
But you’re egotistical enough to think yo ucan determine what player is giving max effort and what player isn’t because you watch a game on your television?
by jemagee on Feb 17, 2010 3:47 PM MST up reply actions
Everyone critisizes Amare's effort on Defense
in the same way.
They see him miss defensive assignments or whatnot and they automatically say he ’doesn’t try’ or he shuts down – but in my opinion the guy leaves it out there. the problem is his defensive awareness. Great D not only requires effort but anticipation and a knowledge of player tendencies (not only your opponents but your teammates as well) so you can place yourself in a position to act instead of react when it’s too late, which is what Amare does an awful lot. .
Amare works as hard as anybody and effort isn’t the problem – maybe it’s more time in the film room and hitting the scouting reports that will continue to help his defensive improvements. I say this because every time he is interviewed after a great defensive game he specifically mentions watching tape and preparation as keys to his success.
Sorry to change topics a little – just had the thought – and many here are the same who place the ‘no effort’ misnomer on Amare’s shoulders.
They say "don't swim with the sharks", but I'm faster than sharks so it's not a big deal...

by jemagee on Feb 17, 2010 3:18 PM MST up reply actions
Hmm….mostly the NBA – i wonder why that might be.
So what your problem truly is with is society and how professional sports are valued, which is kind of funny as most people who post on sports blogs are not the ‘average’ but the more dedicated sports fan, so the suns are important to you, the nba is important to you but you have a problem with the wage scale that has its basis in economics and ‘scarcity’?

I just see more potential and explosiveness in Gay – also he’s only 23 and in his 3rd year whereas Deng is a year older, has an injury history, and already has a large contract tattooed on him. With Gay at least we can take a part in his contract negotiation if we do pursue him.

It was that he wasn't playing for the bulls towards the end of the season
but was planning to play for the GB team in the summer.
I’m a Bulls fan as well, but I’ll admit that I have seen much of their games since the 07-08 season. I liked Deng, he is a good shooter that doesn’t take many threes. Skiles told him to stop shooting the threes when he was the Coach. I don’t know if Deng has changed his game. Deng is good, but his contract isn’t worth it. I prefer Iggy over him because of his play-making abilities.
Deng is a better outside shooter, Iguodala is a really bad perimeter shooter, but defensively he’s quite good and his court vision is kind of incredible.
You have to factor health into this and Iguodala has missed less than 10 games due to injury his entire career and he was a starter from day 1

I don’t really want him, anyway. Something has to happen. Paxson isn’t a good GM. I believe if we wanted Deng we could get him for a reasonable price. The Bulls are no where in the position to be demanding a lot of value back for Deng when they over payed him big time.

Although Hakeem was definitely a great talent, as well.

Well – trading down isn’t always that easy – you have to find someone willing to trade up at the same time…personally – if they felt that Thabeet was the best player available – that’s fine – but did any draft service, even nbadraft.net, have Thabeet as the 2nd best player in the draft?

That’s definitely the common opinion among those who have never been. But, as a native, I run into more people who moved here from elsewhere. And a large number of those came for a visit, loved it, and decided to stay.
And while we’re dropping s/o references, my fiancee falls into that category!

I don't like Rubio
I hate the fact that some player/s that want to be included in the draft, and when drafted, tells the team they won’t be signing at least a year or two because they think they’re not ready yet. Then why the hell did they bother to include their name on that list.
We all want to fall in love. Why? Because that experience makes us feel completely alive, where every sense is heightened, and every emotion is magnified. Our everyday reality is shattered and we are flying into the heavens. It may only last a moment, an hour, or an afternoon, but that doesn't diminish its value, because we are left with memoriesthat we treasure for the rest of our lives.

Jingoist then.

No one makes the NBA draft him.
And since he has a 3 million dollar buy out – but doesn’t have 3 millio dollars – and the wolves can only provide 500K – would you lend him the 2.5 million dollars?
by jemagee on Feb 17, 2010 4:00 PM MST up reply actions
Thats why i said hindsight is a beautiful thing
that draft was considered to be griffin or bust, nobody knew Evans was going to turn out to be the PG version of LeBron, that Jennings would drop 55 in his rookie season etc. Memphis didn’t need those guys, they are set on the wings and at PG, but a 7’3 center who has the potential to completely change a game with his D is something they needed. Drafting is, after all, a gamble but they obviously considered Thabet a gamble worth taking.
Well here’s the thing…I don’t recall a single mock saying anything about THabeet being the #2 pick.
Of course, I got sixer fans who say the sixers should have drafted lawson over holiday and ignoring the massive age difference upside between the two :)

Alright, I don’t see a the possible 3rd team being Chicago or Philly. Their GM’s don’t have the guts to make big trades. If they did than the Bulls would’ve gotten Gasol two years ago.
That leaves us to the “Mysterious” team. I think its GS.

the thing about deng and igoudala for me is that their contracts is the length of their contracts. the salary cap is projected to be at about $50 -$53 mil next year. what is it going to be in 3 years when both players are under contract for $14 mil? will their contracts take up a third of our salary? a fourth? i want to avoid a situation where we have to trade two unprotected first rounders to get rid of one of them. that’s why i’m a little leery about taking either of them back in a trade.

Why pay for Deng when we didn't pay Amare

i think the following SF’s are the best in the western conference
K. Durant, C Anthony, are the top 2 and the rest R.Gay, L Odom, R Artest are the next tier down, i think if we get Deng he would be in this second tier .
His stats in the nba overall for the SFposition is 9th in scoring and 10th in efficency and 8th in pts/reb/asts.
everyone is saying his contract is bad but with the players we will get back in terms of thier bball play i personally like Deng, Hickson, T Thomas, Beasly in that order.
i guess 2mrw we are all going to be dissapointed with any deal or ok with it only way we will be happy is that if we get both miami’s first round picks in the 2010 draft

Actually
The Clip have a much better future and better players…With this trade happening Andray Blatche and Randy Foye effectively become there best players…Although the Wiz will be major players in this years free agent class….especially if they could void Arenas contract…They would have like 3 people under contract…Then Arenas can come to the Suns for cheap, get whipped into shape by Nash and Hill and go hibatchi.
But seriously….The clip have a bright future in Outlaw,Griffin,Kaman, and Davis….

I’d also be willing to throw in Earl Clark if we had too. Getting Deng would effectively make him useless.

I forget to mention we would save $19,346,657 between the trade difference plus miller and thomas’ expiring deal…But, if Thomas does good we could resign him…Deng and Thomas could be great in t he Suns system…Even Brad Miller could help space the floor…We’d be really, really deep as well.
Nash/Dragic-Barbosa/Dudley-Deng/Hill/Clark-Thomas/Frye/Amundson/Clark-Fropez/Miller
