Daily Poll: Do you blame Jason Richardson's missed dunk for Suns loss?

My immediate reaction was to ignore this blunder from Jason Richardson. I will never know what it fees like to miss a dunk since I will never know what it feels like to make a dunk. It's all part of my philosophy to avoid criticizing people for not doing things that I couldn't begin to understand. Like dunking the ball in transition with 40 seconds left to tie the game.

But who are we kidding. This is sports and if we can't be critical (and cheerful) then what's the point?

Star-divide

Here's the Dunk Fail. You decide.

Yes! Suns were on a roll. He CAN'T miss that

Nope. Mistake for sure, but not the reason Suns lost

Curse! Doesn't matter. Even if he made it the Spurs would have won anyway

I was at this game. The missed dunk was surreal. Crazy. Just crazy.

We specialize in misinformation around here. Facts and stats just get in the way.

Well, our team defense could have been better, but the Spurs weren’t that great either. Both teams played really well and evenly matched. When that happens it just comes down to hitting clutch shots and taking care of the basketball. Obviously we got a good Defensive stop and J-Rich blew a wide open dunk that could’ve tied the game, sucked the energy out of the crowd and gave a huge boost of energy to our team. It was a tough loss and it happens, but I won’t get too upset at J-Rich seeing how he hit the game winner against the Thunder.

by Beavis 25 on Feb 28, 2010 6:58 PM MST reply actions

We just need to get back on track and if anything turn this loss into motivation that can give us some more aggression for next game.

by Beavis 25 on Feb 28, 2010 7:01 PM MST up reply actions

Where was the stops in the 4th quarter for both teams?

by Leonard Sarten on Feb 28, 2010 7:01 PM MST reply actions

Yea, there was none except for that one stop by Phoenix that gave J-Rich a wide open Dunk in which he missed.

I searched YouTube

and I found videos of Kobe missing four breakaway dunks. One two handed and three one habded. MJ missed one too. What I’m trying to say is although it happened in the most inopportune time, shit happens.

Yes, and we should expect these things to happen against the Spurs.

05-JJ gets hurt, Manu hits a game winning three in OT
07-Amare and Diaw get suspended, Bowen knees Nash in the groin, Bowen hits game winning three.
08-Tim uncharacteristically hits a game tying three, Manu hits a game winner.
09-Roger Mason hits a game winner.
010-J-Rich uncharacteristically misses a dunk.

These things just happen when we play the Spurs. However, it’s not as bad as when the Rockets beat us two straight times in the playoffs coming back behind 1-3 in the series to win it and 0-2 the following year to win the series.

Dang it and I thought I had it all!

Gosh, its amazing how many unlucky things happen to us when we play the Spurs.

I think you’re right: There was probably more shame in the Barkley-Johnson Suns losing to the Rockets twice and blowing series leads. Except for Hakeem Olajuwon, the mid-nineties Rockets were not particularly good. They were full of CBA nobodies, and I heard “They don’t rebound. They’re about as deep as The Richard Bey Show.” The Spurs are surely a better team than those Rockets, and the Charles Barkley-Kevin Johnson Suns were probably better than any version of Nash’s Suns.

It hurt

But come on can’t place all the blame on him.

How about the lack of defense in the second half? Or the missed free throws?

by AcucracK on Feb 28, 2010 7:49 PM MST reply actions

All the blame can’t go on him, but you just don’t miss a wide open game tying dunk with 40 seconds left to go right after you finally got a defensive stop. Missed free throws did hurt too and the bench didn’t step up.

by Beavis 25 on Feb 28, 2010 7:57 PM MST up reply actions

You can't blame JRich...

but that’s tough. I remember one game I was playing and I missed a dunk in the second half – we ended up losing by 2 – easy to think what if and I’m sure he’s blaming himself (as I did and still do) but that’s not the only blown opportunity the Suns had just the most prominent.

I’m still baffled by both Steve and Frye for that last play…just bizarre.

I feel for Amare too. It always hurts to play a really, really, good game and have your team still lose.

by Beavis 25 on Feb 28, 2010 7:59 PM MST up reply actions

I really want to see how our team responds tomorrow against the Nuggets. If we don’t show up and play aggressive right from the start than it shows that our team doesn’t have the mental toughness to go that far in the playoffs.

by Beavis 25 on Feb 28, 2010 8:01 PM MST reply actions

Yep

They need to be able to brush this one off and bounce back. There will always be tough losses from time to time. Tomorrow is kind of important.

by underxthebridge on Feb 28, 2010 8:08 PM MST up reply actions

I think so too. The Nuggets just lost a tough one to the Lakers and we just lost a tough one to the Spurs. The team that plays the most aggressive usually wins. What this game will say is, “who’s tougher” the Nuggets or the Suns? If they come out aggressive and stay aggressive(no giving up big leads or getting soft on the defensive end, NO BREAKS), I would be happy with our team. If the Nuggets come out and own us on our own homecourt than we can say they are the tougher team.

by Beavis 25 on Feb 28, 2010 8:16 PM MST up reply actions

I want to see our team want this game more than the Nuggets. I expect another close game that will go down to the wire(hopefully we can come out on top this time).

by Beavis 25 on Feb 28, 2010 8:18 PM MST up reply actions

You also need to blame Amare for missing so many shots and FTs

Today is a sub par game for Amare, regardless of his points and rebounds.

My man crush on Amare is his offensive efficiency, not on volume shooting

The only stat I liked from Amare’s performance was his 6 offensive rebounds

by magenta on Feb 28, 2010 8:23 PM MST reply actions

Amare did miss 5 free throws

but u can’t blame him. he missed 4 shots the entire 2nd half. You can’t point t a finger on one or two guys. This a team

Look, guys, I am a big Amare fan as you all well know.

However, that does not mean I will go easy on him.

He needs to play like this every game in the play-offs for us to have a hope of getting into the second round.

He needs to bring some trancental form of momentum into the critical games. We simply cannot afford for Amare to take a back seat just becos 1-2 other Suns player are playing well.

by magenta on Mar 1, 2010 12:04 AM MST up reply actions

theres a lot of things to blame for,and the missed dunk is one of them

by silverddue on Feb 28, 2010 9:10 PM MST reply actions

even though amare scored 41, i thought he missed a lot of shots in the first half which he normally makes.

by silverddue on Feb 28, 2010 9:11 PM MST reply actions

Blame Amare!?

The guy CARRIED US in the 2nd half! Sure, he missed 5 free throws, sure he started off slowly, but GIVE ME A BREAK! Do you realize, w/ around 2 min left in 2nd Q he was 3-12, then went 12-16 the rest of the way..how many guys woulda just shriveled up if they were off to that type of start. He scored 26 in the 2nd half alone! Finally, I hope you all notice how much of a leader he’s become. Watch immediately following JRich’s missed dunk, Amare’s clapping & yelling to his teammates to get another stop, to keep their heads in the game. To lay the blame on him for missing a few free throws shows no matter what he does, some fans will blame him for EVERYTHING..

by jma67 on Feb 28, 2010 9:23 PM MST via mobile reply actions

+1: I'm not blaming Amare, just wanting to split the responsibility of the loss between him and the vets

Not sure if the rooks played well in your opinion but I personally like Amare’s 6 off rebounds and Robin’s 6 blocks : >

A missed dunk from a two-time dunk champion...

J-Rich must be feeling really down…

We all want to fall in love. Why? Because that experience makes us feel completely alive, where every sense is heightened, and every emotion is magnified. Our everyday reality is shattered and we are flying into the heavens. It may only last a moment, an hour, or an afternoon, but that doesn't diminish its value, because we are left with memoriesthat we treasure for the rest of our lives.

by Spit_Fire on Feb 28, 2010 9:46 PM MST reply actions

Ironic isn’t it? A two time dunk champion misses a dunk that could have tied the game with 40s left and two years prior a Center who never took a single three in the season hits one in the playoffs to send a game into overtime. Weird, huh?

by Beavis 25 on Feb 28, 2010 10:07 PM MST up reply actions

Duncan was schooling Rolo on bank shots, that's where we lost. Plus Ginobli flops!!!!!!

I noticed that Amare was missing his FTs and a couple of shots but Robin was not understanding to get just a little closer to defend the bank shots, the separation was felt. Add the missed dunk that made me hit the ceiling when I jumped in the air with furry and jaw dropping emotion and the weird no shot by Nash at the end to throw it away at Frye. I have to say though Ginobli got some bull$#!# flops called too!!!! and I started thinking maybe there is Referee corruption when these two teams meet. Calling it a curse is just not true any more. Those Ginobli flops were too oddly convenient for them to get the ball back. I don’t know, I think somethings up.

As great as Olajuwon was, I don't think he could effectively stop TIm Duncan...

No one really can…Injuries are the only thing that slow him down…

hey diawfan

I agree. I love the suns but after awhile of watching the nba, its easy to start thinking that the nba is fixed once in a while, or that the refs have favorites! The way tim duncan holds out his arms and complains after every fricken call would be a T on most players! Doesn’t help that the nba commissioner – stern is a snob. That he simply is trying to put a positive spin on the nba to hide the bad. I wonder what % of profits the nba donates to help people? To me, with the ridiculously high earnings, it should be like golf, where a serious amount of money is sent to charities. Hmmm…I wonder if any website has a stat on money given from nba players, I know there are some great leaders in this.

To be fair

it’s EXTREMELY hard to defend that bank shot. I don’t know anyone in the league that defends it well.

This is the sort of thing that will cost us a playoffs series

god i hope we bounce back tomorrow nyt against the nuggets. I know we can, weve been playing so well and including today besides few errors including the big one by richardson the team played really well, unfortunately so did the spurs.

We really need to be strong though, plus we cant afford to lose ne more games

Wow, great insight with that comment..

Let’s focus on what actuially happened..JRich missed a dunk he should have made…Probably would have changed the complexity of the game and would have made it easier to win…That being said, the Suns missed a lot of free throws that was the difference..

do Spurs laugh Stoudemire off?

Considering that Amare Stoudemire tends to do whatever he wants against the Spurs (even now, when it’s said that his injuries have taken some of his explosiveness, he can drop 41 on them) and they beat the Suns anyway, do you think they laugh off his big games?

by 8472species on Mar 1, 2010 8:21 AM MST reply actions

Kidding?

No NBA team laughs off being lit up for 41 points. The Suns should have won that game (like so many others against the Spurs). San Antonio knows how lucky they were to win and they will be working on a plan to stop Amare next meeting.

by da suns on Mar 9, 2010 12:11 PM MST up reply actions

Amare seems to have gotten a lot of his explosiveness back...(Ask RJ to be sure...)

Right now he is at about 85-90% of 2002-2003 Amare….Dang scary when you consider that about the only PF more explosive than him is the ultra-freaky Josh Smith…

Interesting to see how those dunking machines matched up head to head…

Great, but I would say he’s a better player now, because he rebounds more and is a somewhat less poor defender.

Actually, Amar'e rebounds about the same..

His rebound totals from his first three years was…8.8, 9.0 & 8.9 RPG…He has been around there his whole career as his average is 8.9 RPG for his career..

His rebounding is about the same, but he has gotten slightly better defensively and has a more overall game with his jump shot.. however… I like to see him banging down low. Only hit the J when the defender gives him too much space.. otherwise face him up and take it hard.

i think nash should have at least jacked up a shot with the time limit he had even though he had no control. (still love nash though)
good luck suns tonight against nuggets both teams arre probably hungry for a win after losses yesterday
