...senior vice president of basketball operations David Griffin – to New Orleans on Friday night to watch the Sixers play the Hornets in person.

From Marc Stein

There's not much new here other than Griff going to see Iguodala in New Orleans.

Why would Griff need to see Iggy in person when there's oodles of film and high-tech advanced stats available on him?

The Suns are being awfully public about their interest in this deal. Makes you wonder if they aren't playing a game of Chicken w/ Amare and his agent - making it clear that Amare doesn't have them over a barrel in hopes of him taking a smaller extension offer.

Btw - I still don't see how this deal makes sense for Philly unless they want Amare to opt out which they've clearly said they don't want to do. What are they going to do with the long term contracts of Amare, Brand and then they've also got Speights coming up and showing promise?

It only makes sense for Philly if they view Amare as an expiring contract but of course Amare's threatened to opt in this season.

What a convoluted mess this is turning into...

Even if they have to pay for Amare thru next year, they’ve essentially halved Iguodala’s deal (taking 2 years of STAT and getting rid of 4 years of Iguodala) and gotten rid of Dalembert, someone they obviously don’t even really want around.

Not my favorite deal out there because of Dalembert, but I do think Iguodala would be good here as a 2 guard.

right

if Amare doesn’t end up staying there which is what the 76ers claim they want. Of course they could be full of crap too…seems like everyone else is

better defense, worse offense

I only reluctantly support this trade, because I want Andre Iguodala but not Samuel Dalembert. He’s superfluous—just Robin Lopez with more experience; and who would replace the offense, especially if Jason Richardson also goes? Not Barbosa, because he’s recovering from an injury. And we should wonder why the 76ers don’t want Dalembert,

Contract, I'd assume

He’s owed $11.3mil this season and $12.2mil the season after that. Maybe trying to dump costs?

by Trevor Paxton on Feb 7, 2010 8:21 PM MST up reply actions

why not Brand?

If they want to dump a contract, dumping Brand’s would be more helpful.

by species8473 on Feb 7, 2010 8:34 PM MST up reply actions

because Brand sucks

and his contract is a HUGE burden…why on earth would the Suns take that on. They would be FAR better off paying Amare a tad more than taking on Brand’s contract.

You’ve brought this up about 12 times now and keep getting the same response.

I actually don't mind Brand that much

I just think he sucks for this team, unless we’re willing to undergo an entire facelift and change our style of play.

Brand needs to get into shape

Here on the East coast, I see him enough. To me he looks heavy. Of course his knee surgery did not help. He would not run the floor that well in Phoenix.

by Grockcubs on Feb 8, 2010 6:54 AM MST up reply actions

A bit much

to say that Brand “sucks” his contract may not be ideal, and may indeed suck, but as a player Brand is pretty good.

Reading is good...

by N8lol on Feb 8, 2010 12:55 PM MST up reply actions

Even if Amare opts in

His contract is still two years shorter than Iguodala’s.

by jburning on Feb 7, 2010 8:23 PM MST up reply actions

The suns may not trade Amar'e if we continue playing well, according to that article.

This is what worries me, becuase the motives for trading him aren’t for wins/losses this season, its becuase he could opt-out this summer and we’d lose him for nothing. I think most suns fans would prefer to see him stay around with a reasonable extension, but unless an extension is signed or Amar’e formally agrees to opt-in this summer before the deadline i really think we need to trade him now because losing him for nothing in the summer won’t even leave us enough cap-room to sign a decent replacement.

Obviously any trade we make this season will negatively affect us this season because of the difficulty of integrating new players on the fly, but it really hope Kerr doesn’t overlook the long-term future of the Suns and keep STAT without an extension simply because he doesn’t want fan backlash for trading him during a successful streak.

by DaveJD on Feb 7, 2010 4:31 PM MST reply actions

Pretty good chess game...

Seems like some serious manuevering going on here…Personally, I think the Suns want to retain Amare, but get him to extend as cheaply as possibly I also think Amare wants to stay. but wants to Suns to shell out for his services….Is there a reconciliation point…Only time will tell…

Well put.

Middle ground is what the Suns are looking at. This team could ill afford losing Amare for nothing but a roster space.

by Grockcubs on Feb 8, 2010 6:55 AM MST up reply actions

Iguodala could have been a Sun six years ago

Oh, and if they had wanted to spend some money, the Suns could definitely have drafted Iguodala in 2004. He was available when they decided to draft Luol Deng for the Bulls and take the second-round pick Jackson Vroman, who had a neat name but who must have been unremarkable in every other way. (He disappeared from the NBA quickly and was never heard from again.)

by species8473 on Feb 7, 2010 4:35 PM MST reply actions

YEAH!!!

I hope this trade goes through soon…….

by Suns R Us on Feb 7, 2010 6:27 PM MST reply actions

I think the deal makes perfect sense for Philly. Whether he opts in or not. If he does opt in Philly can play (rent-a-center(or pf a guess)) with him to see if he pans out before they sign him to a longer deal. It would only cost them an extra $5M to keep Amare for his final year of his contract after Dalembert and Iggy were traded (assuming they get Rich in the deal).

Its not like Philly is out of the Eastern playoff picture by any means, a team with Brand, Amare, Iverson can most definitely make the playoffs in the East this season. And after they make it its only a roll of the dice, they could probably push Hotlanta or Boston to 7.

For the record I do not want Sammy I’d almost rather the Suns buy him out his final season like they did with Wallace for 50 60% whatever so he doesn’t eat into ANY of Lopez’s minutes. Dalembert averaged like 6/6 over the first half of the season, we don’t need to pay a guy 12M for his spotty play and 6 hard fouls.

by SSOHOWARD on Feb 7, 2010 9:20 PM MST reply actions

Maybe we should get a 3rd team involved?

by Beavis 25 on Feb 7, 2010 11:22 PM MST up reply actions

You guys are all ripping Sammy but before the Haiti catastrophe which he had alot of friends and family involved in he put up pretty decent numbers in limited minutes this year.

If we had Ragin Robin start and Sammy D as a backup we would always be solid defensively and with rebounds in the middle and both centers are pretty mobile but lopez of course more athletic, Sammy blocks shots and rebounds. The two of them would make great centers for the team. You could still play Channing at the 5 at times as well.

Then on top of that you have a nice expiring contract next season for a player that could actually help a team before the trade deadline.

I still like this trade the best but if we find a way to give up amare and jrich i want an unprotected pick with iggy and sammy then maybe kapono for filler. good trade for both teams and out of everything out there in the rumors this is the best.

Oh yeah and if we do get Iggy we need to play start him at shooting guard. Then hopefully if Clark responds better as his minutes get better and in the offseason he could start at the 3 for us next year. We need draft picks to get a pf though,

Dalembert didn’t start playing decent until about a month ago, giving 10/10/2 over the last 20 games probably, and before that he seriously was a 6/6/1 player for the rest of the time. I would really hope they don’t plan on playing him next year and trade him in the offseason as an expiring contract.

by SSOHOWARD on Feb 8, 2010 5:12 PM MST up reply actions

What IF

What if the Suns are trying to sign Amar’e to an extension and the trade with philly for Iggy is not for Amar’e?
What if the deal is for
1) JRich for Iggy (totally for caps)
2) JRich+Barbs(+TGriff+Money) for Iggy+ Dal
This is just a big IF scenario. Its root is not strong enough but it is possible bcoz d Suns are hoping to sign Amar’e and also seem to be in love with Iggy, the 76ers have nothing to play for this season, even next season (even if they get Wall and another top 5 pick). So, what they want is cap space. The whole we want Amar’e to extend is just crap.
Why do this trade;
Philly
The get back 20mil players (combined) in place of 24mil, LB could be in their future as the build a new team (of course, JRich goes off in 2011 when the money means more).
They get rid of Iggy’s contract.

Suns
We get Iggy (and Dal), keep Amar’e for say 17,14,14,15. Dals contract is similar to that of JRich (no lose in terms of contract). We go from a team that make the playoffs to a team that contend for the title. We keep on building while playing good ball with Dragic, Lopez, Dudley, Clark (hopefully), and since they are young, Amar’e, Iggy and may be Lou and Frye (it depends).
Of course, this is all an IF…

just maybe this could work

this is my 3 cents. works on trade machine

Phoenix Trade: J Rich to Philly and T Griffin to OKC
Phoenix Get : A.Igoudala and T.Sefolosha

Philly Trade : Dalembert to OKC and A.Igoudala to Phoenix
Philly Get: J Rich and E.Thomas from OKC (expiring this year)

OKC Trade: T.Sefolosha to PHX and E.Thomas to Philly
OKC Get: S.Dalembert and T.Griffin

Works for Phoenix because we get to wing players who are young and atheletic.resign amare for $15m for 5 years ($75m) and last year being a team option

Works for Philly cos they get rid of 2 big contracts and are $55m and 9 players on roster for the following season.

Works for OKC because they get a defensive presencse at the 5 in Dalembert.
rumors that D.Lee would sign for them in the off season but Dalembert is more of a defensive 5 with his defense an rebounding and his contarct eneds next year 2011.
starting lineup of westbrook harden durant green and dalembert and have a bench of Maynor griffin Ibaka kristic and they have 2 first round picks in 2010 draft where they can draft some firepower for there bench.

The really sad part to all of this is if the Suns had been smarter with Shaq’s expiring contract they could have landed a ton of pieces that could have contributed. They would have had to keep him on the roster for part of the season… instead they trade him for Wallace and then buy him out. I believe that was a 10 million dollar buyout of Wallace, they could have used that cash to pay for Shaq for part of a season (and let him sit the bench who cares) and then trade him off to say Philly for example to land Iggy and Dalembert…

It’s just frustrating to see the front office so eager to shed salary they are willing to do it and get absolutely NOTHING in return. Shaq was a valuable piece to this franchise (and no I’m not talking about his play on the court) — his huge expiring contract every team wants to shed space right now how could the Suns front office not have known this?

by SSOHOWARD on Feb 8, 2010 8:51 AM MST reply actions

interesting question

I will speculate that one reason they didn’t do this was they felt that by trading Shaq to Cleveland they were “doing the right thing” with him. Keeping him around for part of the season and then dumping him at the deadline as an expiring contract is kind of a shitty way to treat one of the greatest players of all time.

Not saying you are wrong – just putting that out there.

You could also argue that having Shaq on the team at all would have been disruptive to this year. You don’t “bench” Shaq without ramifications. It would have been a huge circus. So they would have ended up playing him which as we know changes what the Suns do and are and would have slowed Robin’s development as well.

It’s an interesting idea though and similar to what they did by paying the Sonics to take Kurt Thomas instead of waiting until the deadline to get something back for his $8m expiring. That was extremely short-sighted.

by Seth Pollack on Feb 8, 2010 9:09 AM MST up reply actions

I agree they couldn't have benched Shaq

Although they may not have had to wait until the deadline to trade Shaq. I’d imagine (only speculation here) that there probably were teams looking at the big picture (and looking into the 2010 free agent off-season), and would have traded for Shaq’s expiring contract in the 09 off-season even though they’d have to keep him on the books for the 09-10 year. There had to be something better than getting a 10 million dollar buyout of Wallace in the market, I suspect they were just so eager to dump Shaq that they took the first offer made. That’s some unfortunate business planning.

by SSOHOWARD on Feb 8, 2010 9:36 AM MST up reply actions

that trade for nothing was so frustrating. We should have at a minimum gotten JJ Hickson in that deal but our owner is cheap

ANYTHING would have been helpful,

We had to pay out Ben Wallace for 10 million, I’d rather have paid Shaq his quota of 20 mil and let him play off the bench this season than to have done that.

How do you you guys feel about Lopez starting at the PF if Amare gets traded? I heard he did it in college. He also seems to be mobile enough; kind of like Gasoft on the Lakers.

If J-Rich gets traded over Barbosa than who would you rather have included? Green or Kapono?

I'd rather Lopez play center.

While mobile for a center, he’s not mobile enough for power forward. I’d rather get Willie Green, I guess, because he’s cheaper and has had better production this year.

yeah...

Why take away from Robin’s (suprising) development? Bringing in Dalembert is bount to have a psychological effect on Side Show Rob…There has got to be a third or fouth team we can rope into this deal t get us a more complementary player for the 4 than Dalembert…

If this deal happens

The Suns could pursue Tyrus Thomas in the offseason, since he’ll be unrestricted. He’s not going to be a start, but hey, if he wants to take the MLE, it might be worth it.

by jburning on Feb 8, 2010 12:10 PM MST up reply actions

I hate Thomas as the center of any Stoudemire trade

But if he’s gotten for the MLE, a line-up of:

Nash/Dragic
Iguodala/Barbosa
Hill/Clark
Thomas/Frye
Lopez/Dalembert

Could be pretty swanky.

by jburning on Feb 8, 2010 12:12 PM MST up reply actions

Sure

I like that idea. There are a couple of other FA this summer that I would be marginally interested in but Tyrus is definitely up there. He would be a nice filler for Amare. Not too offensive but decent solid play all around.

Reading is good...

by N8lol on Feb 8, 2010 1:06 PM MST up reply actions

It might be kind of fun to watch the Suns run with that lineup: throw Iggy at the 4 he is 6’6 and pretty stacked so he could guard some 4’s

Nash/Barbosa/Hill/Iguodala/Thomas

That would be a very tiny lineup but there’s not a single team in the NBA that could run with us!!

Hmm

Read somewhere today that Thomas will be a restricted free agent this summer. I could have sworn he was restricted last summer and the Bulls gave him his one-year qualifying offer, so he could become unrestricted this summer.

by jburning on Feb 8, 2010 9:10 PM MST up reply actions

It says his salary is 0 next season so that would make him a completely unrestricted.

by SSOHOWARD on Feb 8, 2010 11:20 PM MST up reply actions

Nope

Robin isn’t mobile enough to guard most of the good PFs and he doesn’t have the range to play PF. He’s a center. He defends the biggest, slowest guy on the other team and plays near the hoop

by Seth Pollack on Feb 8, 2010 12:13 PM MST up reply actions

Why play both at the same time? makes no sense. Robin starts sammy is backup. We got Frye, Lou, and even E. Clark to sometimes play the 4.

i thought i read sammy expires after next year. that would be a nice piece to trade around the deadline next year.

Yeah thats why I hope we keep JRich.

Jrich and Dalembert’s expiring would be about 25M we could definitely get some interest in those two.

by SSOHOWARD on Feb 8, 2010 5:15 PM MST up reply actions

Begs the question, why trade for Dalembert?

The more I think of it, this trade sounds like a panic deal because they think Amare will walk for nothing… Bottom line is that there are a lot of young power forwards out there that could help the Suns if Amare won’t resign reasonably…..Mr. Giffin & Kerr, please consider all options and the impact to the team and fans before you have a panic attack trade!!!
