Playoff Practice Report: Nash's Eye Healing and Looking Forward to the Lakers

Man, it's going to feel good seeing this guy get on the court again. Here's hoping he's ready to go for game one. (Photo by Max Simbron)

As fun as it was to watch Steve Nash go 4-8 from the field (including 1-1 from three point range), dish out 5 assists, and overall just look like the manifestation of all that is man, it's good to see the eye healing up just fine. As opposed to looking like he should be saying, "Cut me, Mick!", it simply looked like Steve was on the wrong end of a bar fight. So, I guess that's progress.

After most of the focus on Steve's eye subsided, the players went on to talk about the Lakers. While the mood of the practice seemed to be pretty low key, there was still a sense that the Suns know just what kind of giant they're preparing for. Say all you want about how the Lakers barely outscored a Jazz team that relied on Kyrylo Fesenko to provide quality minutes, but this team knows how to win.

Robin Lopez Update!

Robin was seen practicing on the court and Gentry confirmed that he did, in fact, run through a full scrimmage today. Lopez has been medically cleared to play, and Gentry said that he has been moving well, but is still taking some time to work up his conditioning.

When asked on the availability of Robin Lopez, Gentry said, "We'd just like to have him. He's played well for us. It's obvious that having been out this long, it's impossible to come back in and play at the level he was playing, because he was playing very good basketball. But just to have him out there, and that's up to him: if he feels good enough that he can give us 15, 17, 20 minutes, whatever, we'll do that. But we're not going to put him out there until he's convinced that he can help us."

Not exactly a confirmation that he'll play, but it sounds like he's moving well, and knowing the competitor Lopez is, I'm sure we'll see him suit up against the Lakers.

Star-divide

Everyone seemed to be in a generally happy mood. The practice went longer than I had anticipated, but it didn't feel as if it was a super intensive practice. Nash, Hill and Richardson were all held out of the majority of practice, and were mostly on the court at the end shooting a few jumpers. Everyone seems to have already put the Spurs series behind them, and the main focus was on their next opponent: the Los Angeles Lakers.

For the most part, the questions were directed about Nash's eye, Lopez's back, and the lengthy, week-long break that both the Suns and Lakers will enjoy before beginning the series. When asked if the break would do anything to throw the Suns off their game or cause them to lose momentum, everyone offered a quick and resounding "no". Most are looking at this as a chance to nurse nagging injuries and discomforts, and perhaps no one will be appreciating this break more than the Lakers' Kobe Bryant.

While there were players held out of practice, there's no need to worry about Nash, Hill or JRich. All have been playing as well as they have all season. Giving some old bones a few days off usually works wonders, as we saw with Nash going 1 on 5 against the Spurs in the opening minutes of game one. And that was only off three days rest. Imagine what seven will do.

Also, there may or may not have been (there was) an eye patch floating around practice today. Keep your ear to the ground (or your visits to the site often) for more information. Your diligence will be rewarded, I promise.

Quotable!

Alvin Gentry

On Nash's eye:

...I mean, Barry said it best: He's Canadian. You're not allowed not to play because you have a face laceration. They take your citizenship away.

On whether or not LB's past success against the Lakers will affect his playing time:

I hope so. You know, he has played well against them in the years that I've been here and we'll give him an opportunity to do that. ... Yeah, Leandro's played good against them, and it's because we've been in the open floor. I think in the open floor, he's really good against anyone. That's what happened in San Antonio. In the third game, we got the game in a situation where we didn't run a lot of half court stuff. It was really more of an open floor, kind of a secondary break thing ... so he ended up playing against much bigger, obviously slower guys and he was able to penetrate and make hoops for us.

Amare Stoudemire

On how it feels to play against the Lakers for a chance at a championship berth:

LA against the Suns, the rivalry that there is, how Raja choked up Kobe. It was great to watch, I was enjoying that one. I might send Raja a text and say "We're back!" It's going to be an amazing, amazing feeling.

Grant Hill

On his role as defensive stopper:

I don't know, that label kind of just came, I don't know where it came from. But it's really a team effort and we've had really good game plans. We're just trying to win.

On the Suns' chances against other opponents:

You know, we're confident. I mean, we think we can beat anybody. You don't get to this point unless you're confident in your game and what you're capable of doing. It's weird, we kind of looked at the playoffs before it started, the seedings and everything, I kind of felt, you know, if we could get to the Finals, whoever we play in the Western Conference Finals, we feel pretty confident just knowing what it took to get there. I don't think we'd be as confident if we faced that team in the first round, but I think we've gotten better during the playoffs. We were better in the second series than we were in the first, and one of the things we've been saying all year is ... it's really about playing to our potential and looking to get better.

Goran Dragic from a Slovenian's perspective| Valley of the Suns
The first time I saw Goran playing basketball I was 15 years old. We were playing against a small basketball club Iliria from our capital town of Ljubljana. Before the game our coach warned us about some of their players, especialy about one player who was not so very tall, but extremely quick and dangerous for the basket. His name was Goran Dragic.

Phoenix Suns General Manager Steve Kerr finds success
A brief twinge of hesitancy always has preceded my criticism of Steve Kerr. Even during the Suns' darkest hours, it was tricky reconciling the head-scratching personnel decisions with the integrity and knowledge that defines his reputation around the NBA. Bottom line: Good guys make mistakes. They also can learn from them.

It's a big deal, and the Suns aren't big enough to handle the Lakers - latimes.com
In terms Nash will understand, this wasn't just a sweep, it was a sandstorm. As trailers go, this one previewed all the good parts. The Lakers were nothing the Jazz could handle. The Lakers were everything the Suns are not.

Lakers wanted Suns, but may regret it - latimes.com
The Lakers just got a Western Conference finals matchup they didn't expect, facing the little Phoenix Suns they have dominated since they went from tall to taller, instead of the San Antonio Spurs, of whom they remained wary.

Nice to hear about Lopez

It would be nice to have him on the court again. I remember the chat we had here on BSotS. He wanted another chance at Bynum, and had some ideas on how to limit Bynum’s rebounding even more.

I like that lineup since it gives four 3 pt shooters on the floor, along with Amare.

Leave atleast one of them to double team Amare, he kicks it out to one of the shooters, make an extra pass and boom.

That lineup could work against the Lakers also. Frye has been playing real good post defense, the Amare against Pau Gasol is the only real concern defensively, thats why its important for Amare to get in early and get Gasol in foul trouble.

From Lakers wanted Suns, but may regret it - latimes.com
Amare Stoudemire, once the Suns’ biggest starter at 6-8½, is now a power forward alongside 6-10 Jarron Collins, standing in for 7-0 center Robin Lopez, who is expected back, backed up by 6-10 Channing Frye.

Isn’t Amare 6-10 and Frye 6-11??

Are the Suns really so much smaller than everyone keeps saying???

You are right, those are probably their listed heights – commonly inflated a bit, but I think Amare is probably closer to 6’10 than 6’9

But everyone is shouting from the rooftops how buch bigger the Lakers are with Gasol, Bynum, and Odom. What the Heck? We have Amare, Frye, Collins, and Lopez (or some percentage of him I hope)

If Lopez plays at 50% he is atleast as good as Bynum on one leg

Amare is as good as Gasol – albeit different styles

Frye also has a different game, but he and Odom roughly even each other out

Then we have Collins… Ok. that doesn’t mean much, but you get what I am saying

We have as many bigs as they do!

Question about Leandro Barbosa from a Lakers fan

Is he healthy, or close to 95%? I have not heard much about him in the national media. If he is able to play like himself, he may be an x-factor in the series.

He's healthy, but his role with the team is outdated.

In some contexts, like any bench player, he can be lethal, but in other cases he doesn’t fit as well with a more complete bench that involves better ball movement.

In Seth’s words, LB can be a ball-stopper.

Here's the thing ...

If he takes 30 shots, it will be because the rest of the team is stinking it up … so what you’re really saying is “if the rest of the Lakers stink it up so bad that Kobe has to take 30 shots, we win this series in five games”.

Or you want him to take 5 shots, because that would mean the rest of the team is REALLY stinking up the joint.

lakers are bigger, sure, they will get some offensive boards and easy buckets down low… but why isn’t anybody mention that it may hurt them on their defense? with frye in, gasol must go out to defend him, leaving lot of room inside for amere one-on-one with bynum… plus, we spread the floor and with their two big I am sure they cannot rotate that fast…

Look at the first line: he had doubted the Lakers could beat Utah. How someone could think the Jazz, without two of their starters and a banged D. Will, could beat the Lakers? And this guy calls himself an expert? Oh, my.

In the article, he talks all about the greatness of the Lakers. He refuses to talk about our greatness. And, come on, why would we fear them? We beat Portland and San Antonio, who are much better and tougher teams than Oklahoma and Utah. We swept the Spurs, they swept the 50%-Jazz. Bynum is playing injured, Robin is just coming back. Amare and Gasol can both dominate inside. They have Kobe, but we have Nash. They have Artest, but we have Grant Hill. We have the better bench. Now tell me: who’s playing better? and who whas the better chance?

Now let us carry the underdog title to the NBA Finals.

I admit I haven't seen his other stuff...

But just based on that article, it seems he supports the Lakers an awful lot now. An AWFUL lot.

They're trying to take my tortillas!

If Robin plays 15-20 minutes of good ball..

We win…The only way the Lakers can beat us if their bigs start playing volleyball at their offensive end of the court…Everything else points towards the Suns…Better shooters, quicker and just as good defensively as the Lakers…

Let’s do this!!!!

well I wouldn't say

“just as good defensively as the Lakers”. I mean, they’re AWESOME! Don’t you know that they have Bynum AND Gasol AND Artest AND Kobe Mamba?!?!? The Suns will be lucky to score 50 on these guys, for chrissake. Holy hell, our season is over… Kobe is pissed and wants revenge on the Suns for the ’06 and ’07 ass whuppings…

FORGET THE STATS! Just look in Kobe’s eyes!

Forget the stats that show the Lakers defense in the playoffs (103.7 pts given up per 100 possessions) has been about equal to the Suns (104.0 pts given up per 100 possessions)…
and that the Lakers opponents were worse offensive teams during the season than the Suns’ opponents…
and that the Suns offense is 10 pts per 100 possessions BETTER than the Lakers’ offense…
(courtesy of Hollinger’s team stats on espn.com)

Forget about those facts. the Lakers are AWESOME! They’ll eat the Suns for lunch… Didn’t you read the Kobe quotes? Didn’t you see the look in his eyes? The Suns don’t have a chance.

except they do… ;)

I would say a puncher's chance

Which is better than a longshot, but worse than a toss-up. The Suns don’t need to have everything fall into place perfectly to win, just a few, like hot shooting, bad shooting by the Lakers, defensive rebounding, low turnovers … easier said than done, not impossible. Crazier things have happened before, but it would definitely be an upset if the Suns won.

Personally, I didn't see why everyone was picking the Spurs so confidently

The Suns had a much better record, especially on the road. The Spurs didn’t exactly look great in the regular season, either.

Of course, I didn’t expect a sweep, but I didn’t expect the Lakers to sweep the Jazz either.

As long as he doesnt go back to his foul machine shell....

…his confidence was on an all time high especially after that Clipper 30pt game. This is where the veterans will talk to him and get his confidence high after an injury like this kept him sidelined for almost 2 months. Maybe the adrenaline of playing his first playoff game should keep him afloat till he gets his feet back.

I know is going to get his but the player that intrigues me the most on the Suns

is Frye. I’m assuming LO or Pau guard him. I really haven’t see him play but from what I have seen he reminds me a lot of the PF at Portland who always kills the Lakers. But the part of his game that the Lakers have to try and contain is his shooting.

Amare will get his as well...

Channing is streaky, but he has risen to the occasion this playoffs….Expect him to give as much as Odom, if not more…

It’s obvious the the L:akers have Kobe & the the Suns bench is way better…The real battle is going to be if RoLo & Amare keep the length of the Lakers at bay…If they do, the Suns win in 5 or six. If they don’t then the Suns get beat, fairly quickly.

In my opinion the real X factor for the Suns is which Amare shows up

Defensive minded Amare or only offensive Amare. I can’t make a call because I really have not seen him play. But ESPN is all over his jock about him playing D so he must be doing a good job.

lemarcus aldridge? There games are extremely different, aldridge is way stronger and has better post game, frye has alot more range.

Aldridge is not way stronger than Frye

He just plays 5 feet closer to the basket on offense

I'm not sure if Aldridge is stronger...

At 6’11’ 250, he is about the same phsyical build as LMA…I think it has more to do with his proclivity for avoiding the paint…

LMA is a nice player, but right now Channing serves our needs a lot better…Of course he ain’t better than LMA, he just serves our needs…

yup thats him!

its not his range that kills the Lakers its that his post up game is the type of game that Gasol cant guard. Shoots a lot like Sheed from the Celtics. Well the young pistons/portland sheed.

You

have a point there. LMA is alot like the ghost of Sheed past. Not as smart and not as tough, but his game is similar.

I don’t see Frye as being in that mold, but maybe.

frustrating Pau

is my key to the series. he has been the most consistent laker and if we can find some way, any way, to disrupt him i think it will disrupt the entire team.

i say have jarron body slam him at some point in game 1

My favorite part is when amare says that he might text raja that the suns are back at it

i remember watching that game with a couple of friends and when they saw bell did thaat to kobe they started yelling and me and asking me why he did that. They slapped me a couple of times, in my mind this is a rivalry and i want revenge for the 800’s ownage that the lakers had on us.

Steve Nash is the baddest man out there; no one, not even Robert Horry can hold him back. Oh, and Amare Stoudemire does play defense!

Bawling?

As in like… Crying profusely? Or balling as in like… being the freakin’ sweet basketball player that he is dribbling around the room weaving in and out of the other guys? :D

I’m gonna assume you mean bawling. haha! I don’t think that’s true… I remember seeing the video of the post game in the locker room.

In his post game interview you could tell he was getting teary eyed -

I think it was a real personal challenge for him to finally beat the Spurs in the Post-Season. He had never done it before in his career. I think you combine that with his genuine elation for the successes of his teammates and voila! You have an emotional Canadian.
