He's our team leader. He's without question the greatest Sun to ever offer up a quick-witted quip to a room full of media types hungry for quotables. He's a two-time NBA MVP. He's simply awesome. He's none other than..... Steve Nash.
The quote in the headline was uttered by our coach Alvin Gentry. Coach Gentry also not so subtly referenced Nash's toughness when he talked about "hockey night in Canada" in the Suns locker room. I don't know whether it came before or after his quote from the poem Invictus by William Ernest Henley ("My head is bloodied, but unbowed."), but I do know that it was true inspiration from coach Gentry. He understands that winning in the playoffs is, more than anything else, about toughness. The team that cracks loses. The team that rises to new heights in the face of long odds is the team that acheives greatness. By alluding to the sport of hockey coach Gentry is praising the courage and determination of his floor general, and simultaneously, he is urging his troops to follow the lead of Nash.
In order to beat the big, spoiled bully on the block the Suns will have to muster all the fierce determination of David wielding his deadly slingshot. In fact, Nash makes a good David, weighing in at only 178 lbs, driving the lane against the like of Gasol (250 lbs), Artest (260 lbs), and Bynum (285 lbs). With a cut and swollen shut eye and now a broken nose as playoff battle wounds Nash remains undeterred. He plans to play in Game 4 on Tuesday night. And we shouldn't be surprised if he again plays well. Nash epitomizes what a leader is -- he leads by example more so than with words. And if this team is to slay the Lakers it will take the entire 12 man roster playing with the the will and determination of Steve Nash, sports anomaly, a basketball player with the body of a soccer player and the heart of a hockey player.
In fact, it seems William Ernest Henley could have been describing Nash with the last stanza of Invictus :
It matters not how strait the gate.
How charged with punishments the scroll.
I am the master of my fate.
I am the captain of my soul.
