Phoenix Suns: Draft Day Open Thread

Yippie! It's finally here! With the 46th and 60th pick, the Suns have a chance to change their destiny fore ... well ... ok. But still, draft day is fun.

Rookies are fun and with this particular draft you never know what kind of gem you might find at 46. Remember, Jeff Hornacek was a 46th pick. Goran Dragic was a 45th pick. And our buddy Alando Tucker was a 29th pick.

Paul Coro is reporting that if he's on the board, the Suns are targeting Stanford SF Landry Fields. For more on Fields, read this stuff and here's what Steve Kerr had to say about Fields when he was in town for his workout last week:

"Landry's a good player. Versatile. Does a lot of things out on the floor, always seems to be in the mix. Got a little bit of Jared Dudley in him in  terms of taking charges and making plays and creating extra possessions and he's a pretty talented offensive player too, averaged 22 points a game at Standford. Rebounds well. Very nice player.

He's a bright kid. Obviously, you don't get into Stanford unless you're a pretty smart kid so he's very aware and understands the game well. We saw him a lot in college being out here in the Pac-10 we saw him quite a bit."

From a positional standpoint, you wouldn't think the Suns would be targeting a small forward with Hill, Dudley and Clark all on the books, but if they clearly see him as a guy with the most upside then why not.

And it goes without saying that this is just a report. A lot can happen between now and about 8pm tonight, so stay tuned. We'll be on-site at USAC starting around 4pm for all the good stuff.

2010 NBA Draft: The First Round As Seen Through The Eyes Of SB Nation - Ridiculous Upside
Mock drafts, over the years, have often turned out to be exercises in futility, no matter the sport. Even the most seasoned professional journalists, the type who can sniff out a lie and sneak a peek at a closed workout, get these things wrong on an annual basis. ... and that's before factoring the inevitable draft-day deals.

That's what makes the SB Nation NBA Mock Draft a treat. It's a labor of love orchestrated by Scott Schroeder, the editor at Ridiculous Upside and an SBNation.com contributor, who cajoles, corrals and threatens our NBA team bloggers into selecting players for the franchises they write about.

Where the hell is Standford?

(Yes making fun of spelling makes me feel like a big man…where’s that Blazer fan who got into it with Trevor over being a grammar nazi)

So probably Fields if available and then some Euro to stash at 60?

Does any NBA player have a brother available in the draft this year?

actually its probably

Fields at 46 and then we well the #60 for cash (if anyone wants it). For some reason, Sarver has never actually spent a draft pick on someone who stays overseas. Not sure why, since that’s a great way to save money on that pick in the short term.

my mistake

I would just like to observe that I was apparently mistaken in saying this draft class is weak. Steve Kerr said it’s deep. I don’t see that, but unlike me, Kerr knows.

Kerr said this the other day:

“We’re always looking at possibilities, so we may try to move up if there’s somebody on our list that we like that we want to try and get to. We’ve done that in the past. So we’ll just kind of monitor things. It’s tough to move up. You saw Portland just moved up yesterday ten spots and paid 2 million dollars. So it’s not easy to move up, but we’ll be working the phones for sure.”

I’ve not heard a single peep from any other source that the Suns are actively trying to move up. I would say it is highly unlikely, but you never know…

How do the rookie salaries work for second rounders,

I know Dragic was an exception but is it the higher you go in the second round the higher your salary? If so then, I dont see us moving up if we could pay less for our 46th pick and a Euro stash 60th.

they are all non-guaranteed

so basically what happens is they get picked, go to summer league, then either get cut or get invited to training camp.

Anywhere in that process if the team likes them, they usually get an offer for a min contract for one year (around $500k) with a team option for year 2.

If they go over seas, the team holds their NBA rights.

On the subject of potential trades into the first round

It looks like the bidding for first-round picks includes also taking back a player to lower the other team’s cap number. The Suns are over the cap themselves, and so are ineligible to participate in that kind of trade.

NO wants to give their #11 to anyone who can absorb 6 mil on their cap (Posey, etc). Miami gave away #18 to OKC because OKC would also take Cook (2 mil). Overall, that saved Miami 3+ mil.

If only we were the Thunder. They’re young, strong and under the cap so they can take those deals and come out ahead. If only… all it takes is 3-4 straight seasons of 20 wins while letting every veteran leave for nothing in return but draft picks or cash…

by Turambar on Jun 24, 2010 12:06 PM MDT up reply actions

He's not left yet

so right now, the Suns are over the cap

It kind of makes it hard for the Suns to be aggressive moving up as well since they don’t know what the real needs will be until free agency settles. That’s another reason why they might hold on until after the draft and after free agency and then could target players (including newly drafted one’s) with trades, etc.

I'm actually liking Mikhail Torrance (6'5" SG/PG)

but apparently he’s got a problem with his physical and dropping fast.

Here’s what ESPN says on him:
Positives -
Combo guard
Great size for his position
Excels at getting to the basket
Quick first step
Good athlete
Is an excellent passer
Has good potential as a defender

Negatives -

Streaky shooter
Could be a bit of a tweener
Production at Alabama wasn’t off the charts

I loathe the term “streaky shooter.” Shooting is always streaky, unless you’re Steve Nash or Larry Bird or Walter Davis.

He can't be traded away today, or at least it'd be very difficult

Since he hasn’t officially opted out yet or signed an extension yet, his future is very uncertain and no team is likely going to want to trade for him. I suppose they could work out a last-minute sign and trade, but it’s unlikely they’d be able to put together such a difficult deal with such limited time.

Number 6 is up for grabs but Ellis is attached to the pick

http://espn.go.com/blog/truehoop/post/_/id/17022/wednesday-night-draft-chatter

Ellis is a punk but he’s a good player. If the reports of the “fire-sale” for financial relief in GS are true and everyone but Curry’s available, I would look to try to get 2 of Monta/6/Randolph for something. Rich’s expiring maybe? I don’t want Richardson to go but I don’t think this team is a contender next year so going younger appeals to me.
