Suns 2nd Round Picks: Who Are Gani Lawal And Dwayne Collins?
Were you forseeing this?
So here's the deal:
Player: Gani Lawal
Specs: 6' 9" 234 lbs. Norcross, GA
School: Georgia Tech (3 years)
Numbers:
2007-8: 7.2 PPG, 3.5 RPG 1.0 BLK
2008-9: 15.1 PPG 9.5 1.5 BLK
2009-10: 13.1 PPG 8.5 RPG 1.4 BLK
From Draft Express:
"Sporting an excellent physical profile highlighted by a 7'0 wingspan, Lawal has always been lauded for his athleticism and tremendous work ethic. While those two attributes have afforded him quite a bit of success on the NCAA level, Lawal's post footwork, jump shooting, and passing lagged behind his ability to impose his will on lesser athletes in the paint.
"Away from the block, Lawal remains limited. He rarely attempts a jump-shot, taking less than one per game according to our data. He has improved from the foul line, upping his percentages more than 10% from last season. Continuing to improve his range will be a key for him as he moves forward in his career."

Gani Lawal Draft Combine Interview (via DraftExpress)
So the Suns go with a pretty raw, big bodied guy who can't shoot free throws. I'll admit, I know nothing about Gani, but he looks to me to be a guy who could be a beast, a defensive specialist. But he came out of GT early, and with his deficiencies....Well Gani, enjoy the D-League if you get that far, welcome to Planet Orange.
Dwayne Collins, 6, 8", PF, Miami
According to Chad Ford, Collins has the largest differential between wingspan (7' 4") and height. He also has the largest hands I've ever personally seen. Bigger than Amare's and probably as big as Shaq's. He said they measure roughly 10 inches from thumb to pinky and about about 9.5 from palm to tip of middle finger. His standing reach is 9' 1.5". For comparison, DeJuan Blair's standing reach is 8' 10.5" and Lou Amundson is 8' 7.5".
Todd Quinter calls him a physical paint player, a good rebounder and post defender with underdeveloped offensive skills. He loves to attack the rim and dunk the ball. He sees himself as a Ben Wallace-type player who takes pride in defense and rebounding, though there are some questions about his motor.
Collins had his knee scoped on June 18th to repair a slightly torn meniscus. He thinks he will be ready to play in the latter part of Vegas Summer League (mid-July). He was in Phoenix for interviews and meet-and-greets. Before having his knee scoped, he worked out for New Jersey, New York, Miami, and Oklahoma and expects to be drafted in the middle of the second round.
At 6’8 with a chiseled 232-pound frame, Collins has adequate height for an NBA power forward, but is severely undersized for his natural position of center. He is able to compensate somewhat with a tremendous wingspan (rumored to be 7’3), terrific frame and solid athleticism. Though he does not possess elite explosiveness or quickness, he is clearly above average and has the length and aggressiveness to compete at the next level.
On the offensive end, Collins has progressed slowly throughout his time at Miami, even if he still has a raw post game. He shows average footwork but looks more comfortable receiving the ball with his back to the basket these days, able to resort to a drop-step, a variety of hook shots, and even, at times, a turnaround jump shot. He is shooting a spectacular 60.4% from the field, which ranks him tenth among prospects in our database. This is indicative of the excellent position he’s often able to establish around the basket, as well as his very good finishing ability. Similarly, he continues to get to the line at a nice rate, averaging 8.9 free throw attempts per 40 minutes pace adjusted and ranking in the top 20 of our database in free throw attempts per possession, even if he shoots just 56.9% from the line.
Thoughts?

I read on some mock drafts that he was a projected first round pick around the 20s
Possibly a steal for the Phoenix Suns?
In Nash I Trust! Steve Nash DOES play defense, foo!
I think he's a steal
Probably one of those guys Kerr mentioned that might fall like what happened to Budinger who was projected from middle to late first round.

I was sooooooooooooooooooo happy they drafted lawal; i called it on the kings draft. he was a better stats all around than favors at georgetown; he is def. a stealI was sooooo damn
happy and i still am
Draft Day 2009: I was in a Detroit theater about to watch the Hangover when my cousin texted me telling me who the Suns had drafted. I texted him back asking him who the F*ck that was. I shed a tear and told myself: The Suns are going to suck next year and Amar'e is going to be traded and my life ruined. 12 Months later to the day I am looking back at the Suns incredible playoff run to the Western Conference Finals.
There are reasons for that.
Favors had to play high post (when his low post game is best), against double teams consistently at Georgia Tech. I thought Monroe was from Georgetown? Because GT had such poor shooters, defenses didn’t have to remain honest, and simply collapsed when Favors got the ball. Lawal saw some of the benefit of that, but I’m still stoked the Suns got him. Lawal was projected lower first round, but I think Kahn’s slander of Favors did more damage to Lawal, as Favor’s understudy. Just one more thing the OTHER teams of the NBA can thank MN’s GM for…

Let the Nash-Lawal pick and roll commence!
Just don’t give the ball 10 ft away from the basket though.

lawal imo is stoudemire esque in his atleticism and judging by what espn said so is collins
why did we draft two sf’s that is my only question otherwise, I’m stoked

the lawal pick is perfect in every sense of the word; he is basically lou but with an offensive game and way more athleticism
perfect player to be coming of the bench after stoudemire. I expect colins to get scrap minutes and get solidified minutes when hill retires and clark enters the starting lineup; I love our draft day. Best in in years by far. One great player, superb steal; while collins i dont know much about but their description of him is very encouraging. I have faith in the banker; he will sign the right gm that will push our team in the right direction to overthrow the lakers. Re-sign amar’e, sign pritch/barkley, and we are set. Finals here we come

I like the Lawal pick
But couldn’t we have drafted a center for the 60th?

yeah, i would have liked zoubek, but what are you guna do, embrace the fact that the suns
stole the best georgetown player; favors is years away from being an impact player

according to draftexpress, center is Collins' natural position
but wtf are you going to do at #60.. seriously.. if Collins even ends up just sitting on the end of the bench, it will have been a successful pick.

But Collins is severely undersized for a center
Maybe the Suns plans to use Jones for a backup center

It's probably an indication that the front office is strongly assured of Frye's return.
In Nash I Trust! Steve Nash DOES play defense, foo!
Two words: Dave Cowans..
won an MVP and two titles, playing against Kareem and Walton.
Don’t expect your #60 pick to be a new Dave Cowans, though..

but the other guy that we drafted dwayne collins is a sf; why do we need two more sf's if we already have clark and hill?

Coz they will send him to the d-league and possible bring him back when Hill retires.

That too or make Clark realise there is competition behind him.
So better get his head into his game.

mocking Clark
Yeah…if he doesn’t play more assertively, we should start calling him Earl Cluck.

In the draft express interview...
he said he expects to go in the first round and if not he will go back to school? School as in back to his university or back to basketball school.

I didn't get to see much of him during the year but...
He looks great. The weaknesses in the footwork and shot are something that clashes with the Suns’ philosophy. He is raw though. Looks fearless. That much I will give him over a guy like Earl Clark. I definitely think this guy qualifies as a steal.

wow gani lawal
i’m hearing his name so he must be good. much like of dejuan blair type of steal.
Steve Nash can only give 100 percent. The other 10 percent he donates to his families.
I believe in the destiny of the Suns. We can prevail.
good picks
I was just thinking that Lawal can be our version of Serge Ibaka( great leaper and rebounds and block shots) maybe can’t even tell.
His first name is dwayne and he is from Miami
That is ehy you should like him

and both were great passes; large hands and court vision equals success; I had huge hands growing up playing b-ball

why did you say he will go to the D-League?
Most Suns 2nd rounders reach the team. This guy was drafted specifically to replace Amundson. He will be on the team.
So both Lawal and Collins will make the team?
I can see that in the future but they still have to develop which means NBA D-league. Lou was a D-league player also and it helped him a lot so its not a bad thing.
Slumdog Millionaire without the million.
maybe not Collins
Lawal will be on the team though. Whether he takes the roster spot of Jarron Collins or Amundson or someone else, he’ll be on the team.
we'll probably send him down to the d-league during the season
but i think he makes the team
Oh…thanks for the information. But why is everyone so sure Amundson will go??

No, even before the Suns got Lawal, people have seemed to think Amundson will be let go.

Lawal and Collins
They are both listed as PF and very athletic, energy guys, with Lawal to be said he is more polished of the two,I like them both and hope free agency goes as good as the draft went for our suns or even better. GO SUNS
Now I feel the Suns absolutely need to sign Amare and bring him back.
Having Lawal as his back up would be awesome plus Lawal can learn a lot from Amare. If they say Lawal is just like Lou with better offense then that it just the best scenario possible.
Slumdog Millionaire without the million.
You have no idea how crazy i went on the str blog when it got to the somewhere around the 40h pick and lawal was stil on the board
I was so damn excited; lawal had a better year than derrick favors; sorry for repeating that, but favors is the third pick and lawal the 46th. This is a steal of epic proportions

Collins looks like a beast too; favors standing reach is 9-1. So we just got the best value for our picks; hopefully we can play collins at the sf; hopefully it isnt like a marcus fizer type deal, undersized pf that busts out of the league
even though it wouldnt be THAT big of a deal

Collins is listed as a PF
and his natural position is C.. why on earth would you put someone with a 9’ 1" at the 3?
It must be that time of day, the time to focus on sports.
because he wont ever get time at the 4 behind lawal and stat?

Collins = Chuck Hayes?
So Collins is a natural center but is severely undersized. Does that make him like a taller Chuck Hayes?
As opposed to...
Earl Clark interviews.

Or as opposed to Robin Lopez interviews? The way we describve Lopez’s interviews, they remind me of the Dilbert cartoon in which Dilbert says to the PHB, “Hold on. I have to get an interpreter who speaks mumble.”

He said cliche in an interview
grant and steve will like him
and holy crap i just watched the collins highlight reel again
the dude looks BEASTLY. his game looks really physical and u can tell that he just loves dunks, dunks, and more dunks. i think with the suns system he could learn some skill and finesse. if either or both of these guys make the team, i could see our interior defense and rebounding being quite good with fropez, lawai, collins, earl. hopefully we retain at least one of Amare, Channing, Frye (im hoping for Amare but i think Frye will be the one to stay)
I really like these picks
Both were projected higher in terms of talent than their draft position and both will continue the trend of hard-working, scrappy, defense-oriented second unit. I really like Lawal’s talent especially – he’s got more skills than Lou. Bye Lou.
I read that Mikhail Torrance (who I also liked, and was not drafted) had a heart condition that scared teams off. Other players have had that condition too and played through it – not really a big problem – but any little thing can bump you right out of a draft.
I’m hoping we bring Torrance in for summer league to play the PG spot. Clark, Lawal, Collins, Griffin (snicker), some SG fill-in and Torrance would be fun to follow for a few games.

Too late to change the stupid twitter name. Did it as a joke to my teenager, but now I'm hooked on the news-feed aspect of twitter.
Word
I want Torrance!
Steve Nash, the league's MVP, is a longhaired Canadian who spoke out against the war in Iraq and reads The Communist Manifesto. Quentin Richardson declared after a game-winning shot that it "was like Hamlet. It was a suspense thriller, and I killed them at the end." Amare Stoudemire, when asked to comment on a 22-point third quarter against the Kings, said, "I've got a tendency to jump over some guys' heads and throw it down."
This Collins kid likes to dunk...
If he can develop a 10-15 foot jumper to go along with that athleticism, he could be a keeper. Wow, it seems like anything close to the rim he is going to throw it down…
This scary could be a potential beast…
"The art of war is simple enough. Find out where your enemy is. Get at him as soon as you can and slap the crap out of him before he figures out you are there...."

I say we bring in Torrance and Scottie Reynolds for summer league. Can't believe nobody picked up reynolds. That guy is a baller.

The 60th pick won't play
This guy’s probably just one with great work ethic who will make everyone work harder in training camp.
Most impressive play of Collins' highlights?
When he dunks over the obviously much larger center of UCONN. You can tell he is only 6’8 in that, but his arms go on forever….
Reading is good...
I like these picks.
Lifelong Arizona Cardinals/Chicago Bears fan [I have always lived in Arizona, dad is from Chicago].
I can't stand fair-weather/bandwagon fans, stick with your team, throughout the good and the bad. And don't switch to whichever team wins the Super Bowl each year.
