Josh Childress To The Suns?!?!

Paul Coro has even better info!

Suns getting Turkoglu and Childress for LB, second round pick and trade exception...

Childress: 5 yr, 30-34 million.  Sweet deal!!

------------

I was just trolling the net and saw THIS on ESPN:

Suns to make offer to Josh Childress

I have said recently I've got an unhealthy obsession with this guy. He's a SG/SF at 6'7" who can defend and score and is a VERY good player. He's been overseas the last few years because he didn't want to re-sign the Hawks

As far as contract, it would HAVE to be a sign-and-trade, using some of the 12.5 mil TPE from Amare. Hawks just overpaid Joe Johnson, so may be willing to give him to the Suns for very little going back. If they want assets, LB would be a good fit. They need PG help, with Bibby dying a slow death over there.

I think this would be a VERY good signing. Probably 8 mil a year. But this guy is a good fit.

Wow.

UPDATE: Added more on Josh Childress.  Very good stuff.

Draft Express write-up:

http://www.draftexpress.com/profile/Josh-Childress-1988/

May 6, 2008
Overview:A long, lanky swingman with a solid all-around skill set. Does not excel in any one particular aspect of the game. Possesses solid athleticism, but his great work-ethic and feel for the game makes this less conspicuous. Has put on some weight since coming into the League. Remains very skinny, which makes him a bit injury prone. Owns a huge wingspan. Displays high-character off the floor, something that became very clear during his collegiate career with the Stanford Cardinals. Won the PAC 10 Player of the Year Award in 2004. Inability to add significant bulk has limited his durability and effectiveness around the rim. Versatility, smarts and finesse make him a valuable asset. Is a restricted free agent this offseason, and should find a number of suitors around the League.

Offense:Has a very smooth offensive game, but is the owner of one of the League’s most awkward jump shots. Displays a major hitch in his jumper and releases it with minimal elevation. Knocks it down consistently enough not to not have to fix it. Scores efficiently, which is the result of great shot selection. Shows a deceptive first-step. Is able to attack the rim off the dribble, and sets his man up by moving well off the ball. Isn’t the most efficient finisher due to his lack of vertical explosiveness. Does a good job of using his length and crafty footwork to beat defenders to the rim or get to the line. Doesn’t pull up off the dribble very often, since he connects with those kinds of shots at a pedestrian rate. Shows range out to three-point range, but his form gives him a very small margin for error, which is represented in his three-point percentage. Finds his offense in transition situations and drives off the dribble, both of which embody his desire to run the floor and his capacity to handle the ball well. Has good court vision, passing ability, and decision-making skills. Doesn’t play all that much point-forward sinceJoe Johnsonfills that role. Won’t light up the scoreboard, but is a consistent contributor that gets his baskets in the flow of the offense. Provides a steadying presence on the floor in Atlanta, despite his age, and is a valuable asset in half-court sets.

Defense:Atlanta’s most fundamentally sound defender. Doesn’t have ideal foot-speed, but has tremendous defensive intangibles and a great wingspan. Reads ball-handlers extremely well, and creates turnovers by getting into passing lanes. Length and effort make him a very good perimeter defender. Lacks the bulk to defend strong players in the post, but makes an effort to deny entry passes by working hard to take away angles. Gets beat off the dribble periodically, but doesn’t give up anything easy at the rim. Does a good job of rotating with the ball. Isn’t reckless when closing out his man off of skip passes. Still manages to block a few shots due in large part to his long arms and good timing. Has great timing and knows how to get his team extra possessions.

Blogging Through the Euroleague Final Four
May 2, 2009
The most high profile American player in Europe,Josh Childress, fared pretty well in his first ever Euroleague Final Four, posting 11 points, 4 rebounds, 3 steals and 2 turnovers in 28 minutes. He was hampered somewhat by foul trouble, which he was very visibly frustrated by, both during the game and afterwards in the locker room:

“I feel like a rookie sometimes here, or a freshman in college,” Childress told us. “I never get any calls. It is what it is. I can’t be mad about it. I guess it could be more even.”

Despite the foul trouble, Childress was a major contributor in this contest, doing an excellent job being aggressive with the ball both in the half-court and in transition, notably standing out with his excellent athleticism, but clearly playing within himself and looking very intelligent and unselfish. Defensively, he guarded multiple positions, and did an especially good job on combo guardVassilis Spanoulis, helping slow him down after a very hot start. He had one especially impressive putback slam off an offensive rebound with about four minutes to go, and managed to get a hand on a last-second desperation tip-back that would have sent the game to overtime, but unfortunately rimmed out. “I hit it a little too hard” Childress lamented.

Childress knew exactly what question was coming next, and was ready to answer it by the time the third word came out of my mouth.

“I don’t know what I will be doing this summer. It’s too early to decide.”

When asked what factors will play into his decision regarding whether or not to opt out of his contract and return to the NBA, a very solemn looking Childress offered few specifics.

“It will come down to personal feel. How I feel at the time.”

Regarding how much financial considerations will help decide that, Childress didn’t think they would be the main one:

“Money isn’t everything. I’m going to make a good living regardless. It will come down to personal preference. Money is money—it’s cool, but it’s not why I live my life.”

Josh Childress

by beastattack3000 on Jul 11, 2010 7:00 PM MST reply actions

I have no idea who will get, but I would like the Suns to stop thinking about getting a star player from another team. All of the Suns’ four carpetbagging superstars in the past (Charles Barkley, Jason Kidd, Stephon Marbury, Shaquille O’Neal)—they all brought at least one kind of baggage with them. Huge egoes, arrogance, laziness, selfishness, bad attitude, or inability to fit in the Suns’ system. Let the Suns grow their own stars and let Goran Dragic be their future leader.

by 8472species on Jul 11, 2010 7:01 PM MST reply actions

Who the Suns will get, that is.

by 8472species on Jul 11, 2010 7:02 PM MST up reply actions

Where does he play?

He’s a tremendous talent, but if he’s going to play SF he’ll never get off the bench. Is he a good enough jump shooter SG to play with the Suns? Some years he has been great, some years not so much. He’s consistently inconsistent. If they trade LB to get him, I think it’s worthwhile…just kinda weird.

He had a contract squabble with them and was one of the first to play overseas instead. he’s been there 4 yrs. his team played in the Euroleague Final Four (might have won, can’t remember) and played an integral role. Well, I forgot that we’d probably trade Barbs for him, so that means we’d only use about 1mil from the TPE. Still, 8 mil is too much for a bench player. Barbs is even now overpaid and that’s why were trying to get rid of him. Well, I haven’t seen him play though, but right now I’d be a bit scared if we offered more than 5 mil.

by TheRza82 on Jul 11, 2010 8:04 PM MST up reply actions

That’s what I thought at first, but what I think would happen is an SnT. We give them Barbs and they give us Childress, so if he wanted 8 mil we would only have to use about 1m of the TPE. Still, 8 mil is too much for a bench player.

by Beavis 25 on Jul 11, 2010 8:07 PM MST up reply actions

well lets not go crazy.

I’m thinking of taking the 8 mill out of there until there’s more info.

8 mil was speculated, based on recent FA deals to others. Childress is actually ranked pretty darn high. great bball IQ, plays perimeter defense, passes, rebounds and scores.

but that could also be the average over the course of the contract, meaning more like a 6-7 mil to start. But again, all speculation.

with regard to LB – there was no mention that he’s included. He’s just a piece the Suns have to COULD fit a need that Atl has. If Atl only wants salary relief, the Suns could just take Chil and walk away. Then they’d send LB to anyone with space (Celtics, for Wallace’s retiring/expiring?). the overall net diff would be LB for Childress, which is a great trade IMO

The move is intriguing because Childress fired Lon Babby as his agent and Babby is being considered as the Suns’ next GM.

Does this mean, the vegas club drink is going to be on the Suns FO in some form and Grant will need to fire him too then.

Slumdog Millionaire without the million.

by atkammoh on Jul 11, 2010 8:06 PM MST reply actions

Somewhere between Tayshaun Prince and a young Grant Hill

That’s how I would compare Childress. As a lanky wing defender with a nice shooting touch, he’s like Prince. Seems to have Hill’s smarts and leadership, but isn’t as athletic as pre-injury Hill. But then, pre-injury Hill was a league MVP type, so you can’t expect that. If we get him, I’d think he and Dudley would back up J-Rich and Hill almost interchangeably. When Hill retires, Childress would step right in.

If we can unload Barbosa for him, at a little more salary, sign me up for that.

by East Bay Ray on Jul 11, 2010 8:09 PM MST reply actions

You should know some things about Josh Childress' time in Greece.

a) Josh Childress is averaging 15.8 PPG in 27.5 minutes. Impressive, right?
b) Josh Childress is the Greek league’s leading scorer.
c) Childress carried his Greek team to the Greek A1 Finals, where they lost.
d) Childress is averaging 15.2 PPG in the whole of Europe league (Euroleague). His teammate, former Nugget Linas Kleiza, is the leading scorer in the league.
e) Kleiza and Childress advanced to the Euroleague finals, where they also lost.

In short, it seems Josh Childress has gotten quite a bit better. We know based on recent European projects such as Brandon Jennings that statistics over there are pretty deflated, the competition is still really great, etc. This sounds like a really great signing. What if Childress came out and averaged 18 PPG, 6 RPG, 1.5 SPG? That would totally be worth $8M a year, to me.

Turkeyglue, I am kinda iffish about, he could thrive in a system playing with a true point guard, but it doesnt improve our defense any much then with Amare. by DaveJD on Jul 12, 2010 1:14 AM MST up reply actions

Turk and Chill...

2 great nicknames. Chill can provide the bench scoring that Barbosa gave, but with length and better D added. Turk thrived with Orlando as a point forward type (remember him orchestrating the pick and roll for ORL 2 years back in crunch time? He was really good in that role. Then he went to TOR and Calderon controlled the ball and Turk sulked and had a down year. Question will be can he play next to Nash…).

My big question now is this: Hill, Dudley, JRich, Chill, and Turk (with Clark running a distant 6th on the depth chart) are all quality swingmen who can play SG, SF, and a little PF with Turk in a smallball lineup. Still, that’s crowded, even with Barbosa gone. Is the next logical move turning JRich into a quality big? I think Don Nelson is itching to put Lee at C in his traditional small lineup, and Biedrins (who occupied Nelson’s doghouse all of last year) could be had. He’d be a rebounding/shotblocking backbone for an otherwise offensively stacked team. I know we hope Lopez can be that guy, but Biedrins IS that guy, now.

He's all of those...

still, (and not to belabor my point, but) he and Childress IMHO make Richardson’s big salary very expendable, and with no accomplished rebounder on the entire roster, I vote for a big man like Biedrins coming back in a JRich deal.

our team has such good chemistry that he’ll be the outsider if he starts making trouble. Chemistry problems happen when the locker room gets divided, when one guy is making an ass of himself it usually gets laughed off and it should stop.

Talk about a surprise, sucks LB will be gone but he will be better off somewhere else where he can get more minutes, also Childress is a solid player and young also a great fit with the Suns, Hedo is pretty good when he isn’t a 2nd option, remember in Orlando he did pretty good being a 3rd option he has good skills and can defend just like Childress, I really like how Sarver is doing this offseason, he should of included Griffin in one of those trades, with these moves we probably already replaced Amare’s #’s, and we are probably going to be facing the Lakers again in the West Finals, I think with this roster we can definitely take them and even the Heat. Confident

I just got confidence in the team that’s all, I know i’m aiming pretty high but thing about it we almost had them with last years team, losing Amare sucks but with Frye, he will present Gasol with alot of different problems like having to guard him at the 3-point line and Frye got better D wise last year.

No way can this team take down LA.

They have the most talented bigs in the NBA, no contest. Warrick matching up with Gasol? Not gonna happen.

Confident

Not Warrick, he would be better off on Odom, I think Frye might do better, he will give Gasol different problems also he is getting better D wise and also at rebounds, gotta admit losing Amare sucks but with the players we are getting we may be able to get by the Lakers, also we almost had them last year. GO SUNS

If that happens

Well if it does the Suns can trade him also with the Nash effect his numbers will be better and we might be able to load him off on a desperate or dumb team.

Nash Effect

Also Nash will make both of them better and you never know just like last year.

I just read

That its Lb and Dwayne Jones for Hedo, solid move.

Very cool.

Always been a fan of Turkoglu. I saw some talk on AZcentral about him being too weak to play the 4. That might be true, but he’s capable of playing Point Forward. He did it a lot for the Magic, especially when Nelson was hurting. He’d be able to be on the floor as a 2 or 3 at the same time as Frye and Lopez, or Childress and Clark, etc. At least that’s my take on it. I’m really excited if this gets done!

by Lime on Jul 11, 2010 10:37 PM MST reply actions

would this be our line up then?

pg – nash / dragic
sg – richardson / childress
sf – hill / dudley
pf – turkoglu / warrick
c – lopez / frye

i would think hedo would play since we are loaded on the wings. plus, gentry would always want to have a good shooting pf/c on the floor. as with last year’s team which either had frye or amare on the floor, look for either turkoglu or frye to be on the floor at all times. its actually hard to gauge right now who will start at the pf/c positions. what do you think?

Need more size

They should trade J-Rich for Al Jefferson. Move Turk up the chain to where he’s comfortable.

by JAndrewClark on Jul 11, 2010 10:55 PM MST up reply actions

yeah that might work

Hmmm i wonder what the odds are that J-rich will last the season?

Very Nice.

I was wondering who was going snap up Childress. I really like his play. He should thrive in the Suns system. He is decent on D. Turk could also do well with the Suns. He did in Orlando. It is a system that fits his talents much better than the Raps. Think Orlando, fast pace, reliant on the 3.

Great additions, great possibilities.

Dwayne Jones

Is it true that Dwayne Jones was unloaded? Was looking forward to seeing him play. His rebounding was unbelievable in the short amount that he played and thought that he was a good recall from D-league.

no to turk please

his attitude last year, and in turk national team is terrible!!!! and his contract, as well… too many similar players… I’d rather keep LB…
