The Pemp Babbys - A look At The Suns' Front Office Prospects

This week, the Suns look to fill up the big positions in their new restructured front office: President of Basketball Operations, and General Manager (and maybe assistant GM or VP of Ops as well).

Let's talk about the Pemp Babbys...

According to rumors, the Suns are about to announce long-time NBA player agent Lon Babby as President of Basketball Operations.  In addition, the Suns are rumored to be interested in former Portland Assistant GM Tom Penn and current San Antonio VP Dell Demps for their vacant GM position.  Sarver hinted he is filling mutiple positions in a restructured front office, complete with an analytics department.  So I've speculated he might hire both Demps (a talent evaluator) and Penn (a capologist and numbers guy).

A little background on these guys...

Star-divide

Hence, the nickname: the Pemp Babbys.  Catchy, huh?

Unfortunately, there's not as much internet info on agents and front office people as there is on players.  But I'll give you what I've heard on these folks.

Lon Babby is a long-time and very well-respected player agent.  Here's a hoopshype link to his NBA client list, and a link to his professional web page.  Here also is a writeup on Babby on bleacherreport.com - not bad, actually.  His NBA client list is full of guys who are high in character.  Just look at this list: Grant Hill, Tim Duncan, Shane Battier, and Ray Allen.  He's going to have to pass these clients off to someone else in order to take a job with the Suns.  Recently, he was agent for Hedo Turkoglu, before handing him off before the Suns trade, and Josh Childress (though he'd split from Chill a while ago).  This is a high-class guy who is VERY well respected in the NBA.

Tom Penn was an up-and-coming Assistant GM in Portland before his unexpected firing last spring.  Since then, his GM Pritchard was also fired (on draft day, no less!) and a few others have left abruptly as well.  And we thought the Suns' situation was bad.  Those guys were kicked out the door.  Hard.  And didn't seem to deserve it.  (Another aside: Jeff Bower in NO was kicked out as well... as was Rod Thorn in NJ.  Only Thorn had presided over a terrible team.  Strange summer indeed).  Back to Penn.  Recently, he worked for ESPN during the draft and free agency, and really shows his ability to talk 'capology' with the best of them.  Penn is currently being considered for the New Orleans front office as well.

Dell Demps is more unknown.  He is getting credit for San Antonio's success in drafting, but so have many former/current San Antonio Spurs employees, like Sam Presti (now OKC's GM) and Dennis Lindsey (an early favorite who pulled out), along with the actual GM RC Buford and GM-like coach Greg Popovich. So there's really no telling just how qualified Dell Demps is, since he was surrounded by such other proven talent. Still, he's being interviewed a LOT by New Orleans, so he must be okay. According to ESPN, Demps is scheduled for an interview today with the Suns.  Last week, Sarver said he'd wait on the GM process until Babby was officially in place.  So I assume Babby will participate in this interview.  My money says he finds out if Phoenix wants him (Suns are a better proposition than New Orleans) before taking any other offers.

I'm all for the Pemp Babbys!  Lets get 'em in place.

Something smells around around here,

And it smells like…. progress. A far cry from the purported destruction and Sarverization of the franchise a couple short weeks ago.
And good call pointing out the contrast between Portland’s front office mayhem and the Suns’. Our organization is being handled with care, rejoice.

And New Orleans' as well

not only did they uncerimoniously fire Jeff Bower, they withdrew a contract offer to a player Bower had wanted to sign (Luther Head).

Heres the link: http://www.nola.com/hornets/index.ssf/2010/07/agent_mark_bartelstein_disagre.html

They have been the ugliest organization in the league since their inception in Charlotte.
They tried to leave New Orleans in the wake of the Katrina destruction. Disgusting.

Do you know whats amazing

Sarver has emerged from this summer with seemingly more approval than hhad before the summer began, even though he lost the teams leading scorer and fired the GM who orchestrated a turnaround from Lottery squad to western conference finalist

by DaveJD on Jul 19, 2010 10:16 AM MST reply actions

Well he drew a lot of attention from the Kerr departure.

A freakout was initiated and most people jumped to conclusions and tried to turn him into Donald Sterling before the smoke even settled.

I see what you’re saying, but when I speak favorably of him, it’s mostly a response to the freakout brigade… a subtle message to everyone to chill out.

Kerr left at the height of his supposed genius, making it look as though he was unfairly jettisoned. If he had departed at the All-Star break, Sarver wouldn’t have caught any heat for it. Timing can be a very funny thing.

Giving credit to Sarver

for the post-Kerr/Griffin moves doesn’t fully absolve the fact that went down at all.

I still have a hard time thinking the organization is better for pushing Kerr/Griffin out but they certainly seem to be recovering well.

So what was the final word on Kerr's departure?

Is there one? Did he really get pushed out, or did he leave his post completly of his own accord?
It was verified that he was offered a 3 year extension, right? Doesn’t seem to be in keeping with a force-out.

I was more concerned by David Griffin leaving than Steve Kerr

Kerr I figured wanted back into a sexier TNT job. Less work, more time with the kids, no one’s ever mad at you… might even pay better.

Now was a good time to go, since he his approval ratings had rightfully turned around and he could leave as a success.

But when David Griffin said he didn’t want to be considered for the big chair, and up and left the organization after what, 16 seasons?

Red alert.

by waxmonkey on Jul 19, 2010 1:22 PM MST up reply actions

we don't know what came first, though

Sarver letting Griffin know he wouldnt be considered for the GM, or Sarver letting him know he’d be hiring a President of BBall Ops to oversee him anyway… or if Griffin beat him to the punch.

I don’t want to crap on Griffin here, but Penn and Demps are more widely sought after this summer….

Could we maybe wait to praise Sarver too much...

Until we see this team he assembled, you know, play basketball games? There are lots of knowledgeable basketball people who think our taking on Turk’s fat contract was a bad call, especially when we plan to play him out of his natural position. You have to at least consider that they might be right. I’m reserving judgment until we see how this team plays.

by East Bay Ray on Jul 19, 2010 6:05 PM MST up reply actions

in another way to look at it

the Suns traded a 10 min per game backup guard who couldn’t play defense for a 30+ minute per game starting-caliber forward who played a key role on a NBA FInals team just a season ago, and won MIP the year before that.

GM searches just aren't sexy.

Losing a GM on the other hand will send people into a conniption fit.

RIP Seasons of Discontent

by Scott Howard on Jul 19, 2010 11:43 AM MST up reply actions

That is true and I find it interesting.

I mean in Houston, we may love our GM as well as we do any player. At least any player not named Yao.

Losing a GM is potentially much more destabilizing than losing any given player if the player is non All Star level.

Most teams are the product of the GM as much as they are the players on the court. The philosophy and acumen of the GM determine the future of franchise success.

But, most of them can’t dunk or throw a no look pass so they are not as eye catching.

by Alex Laugan on Jul 19, 2010 1:23 PM MST up reply actions

Wasn't really an argument.

It wasn’t really clear about why Kerr left, was it? Fairly clear Kerr wasn’t getting a raise, but Sarver dodged the pay cut question. I don’t buy that Kerr wanted to leave to spend more time with family, I think he and Sarver differed on a lot of things, or maybe Sarver wanted to clean house.

I don’t think anything’s been documented for certain…So, I’m wondering if the next hire will expose any truth behind the departure.

Blogging Suns Basketball. Twitter: @willcantrellphx

by Wil Cantrell on Jul 19, 2010 2:16 PM MST up reply actions

I'm curious too

my own opinion is that, since Sarver is expanding the front office (Kerr used to be both pres and GM, and he’s adding an analytics dept), then it wasn’t about money in terms of total expenditure.

but I do get the impression that Sarver sees periodic turnover as a good thing rather than a bad thing. I don’t envision any “lifers” under his regime.

Blogging Suns Basketball at Bright Side of the Sun

by Alex Laugan on Jul 19, 2010 2:33 PM MST up reply actions

I think there were just enough philosophical differences for them to split -

Of course, it’s just my opinion, but Kerr probably did want more money, and he wanted more money for Gentry and the staff. I think Kerr kind of wanted to be a hero. Sarver, on the other hand, didn’t see Kerr’s actual job performance as totally deserving, perhaps rightly so. Pair that up with differences of opinion on direction and control, and Kerr’s other options in broadcasting, and I just think they didn’t want to keep it together enough to work it through.
Kerr was looking at being the GM that let Amar’e go, – instead, after this last year, Kerr could kind of go out on top. And I think Sarvers ambition is to develop the organization to the point where it can keep finding sleeper and surprise players like we had last year consistently – that’s what the analytics is all about, and that’s what a canny and shrewd businessman is all about, too – getting the most value for the money. Fortunately for us fans, the playoffs gets the organization more money, so he’s motivated.

Pemp Babbys

I really liked Penn on his ESPN gig and thought that he did a great job of making the “Capology” more understandable. I really wasn’t that enamored with Kerr. If you can’t see that you had great chemistry and flow……you’re probably not a genius when it comes to Talent!! The whole Porter fiasco was very eye opening and one he barely lived down. Sarver is a little scary but so far not too bad, so we’ll see. Anyways would love to see how this team comes together!! I’d be more comfortable with a proven PF, but you never know.

Gentry doesn’t get enough credit for the turnaround. It’s not a coincidence that it was about a full year after he started as head coach that the team started to really click.

The only connection I can make is that,

Grant is/was a client with Lon Babby. Other than that, how the heck did he get into such prominence from a sports agent to president of basketball operations for a half a billion dollar franchise. Also did Sarver know him before the Grant connection? And if Grant will look for a position in the FO after he retires, if his agent is the president of operations.

It's one more guy with an opinion

If I am a GM candidate I wouldn’t want a guy in between me and the bank account (owner).

Does the Babby hiring mean Sarver wants to back out of the player evaluation and signings? Adding another layer of management seems to complicate things and add to the potential that the new GM could feel alienated from Sarver. It further seems like he’s kind of handcuffed to do what he wants to do, he’s got to run it by Babby AND Sarver before getting the OK.

That’s just my outside judgement based on nothing. It could be that Lon Sarver gives an acceptable amount of freedom to the next GM. Still I kind of doubt that.

Who Better To Deal With The Agents Than A Veteran Agent?

It seems to me that Babby just might be a somewhat honorable man, based on his clients over the years. If Grant Hill and Tim Duncan trust him, I say that “that” in itself speaks volumes. As far as a “player/talent” guy goes, I think an agent would be a good judge as to whether someone “knows” talent or not. Just my opinion, but I believe a car salesman knows what is and isn’t a “Lemon”. The real question is on which players were the Portland people questioning Penns judgement on. I felt that when he did his bit on the Free Agency situation, that he was atleast as knowledgeable as some of these so called “Legends”. The GM is a very important piece of the puzzle, so you need the right guy to pick the right guy or guys. I think that a dual GM situation is unique and eclectic enough to work, a little crazy can be a good thing. I don’t know anything about Dell Demps but if he is good enough for San Antonio, then he deserves a good look. As long as everyone works together for the team ……after all “TEAM WORK” has always been the secret to the best Suns teams. Hey, I’m just another Fan crossing my fingers and saying “We have paid our dues with more than our share of heartaches”.

By The Way....

The banter on money and the proper amount was extremely FUNNY!! If I ever find out what “just right” is, I’ll let everyone know.

God yes please do

because the other day I was like "shit" I’ve got TOO MUCH money so I went out on a binder and blew it all on drugs and prostitutes…Then I got caught; you would be AMASED at the consequences for getting caught in an elementary school play ground with 5 hookers and enough drugs to start firefight in Juarez. The punishment just doesn’t fit the crime, especially the fines. They are astronomical. And of course I’m very sure I don’t have ENOUGH money so now I’m out here selling drugs and pimping ho’s to pay for all the fines I got for buying drugs and paying ho’s. Which’ BTW I have found that Pimping, glamorous as it is, may be comparatively challenging (compared to something like say…spelunking) it is not inherently so…there is a inverse relationship to the relative "ease" of pimping and the attractiveness of your ho. Also sore to teeth ratio is crucial, as pimping is an exponential equation where in #sores / #teeth is the exponential factor. Example; If your ho is an 8 and has 1 sore and 10 teeth, pimping gets much less challenging

{(pimping)/8}^.10 <<< 1.0

However; if your ho is a 5 with 10 sores and 1 tooth then

{(pimping)/5}^10 >>> 1

At which point pimping indeed "AINT EASY". So I say to you, our new friend Stanley B. please find that balance of money that is not too much and not too little, and tell me or I will reach back like a pimp…and slap a ho.

"I’ve been in the league 14 years and I don’t think I’ve been called for a carry yet. It’s news to me," "I’ve never heard anyone complain about me carrying the ball. The best coach in the league Gregg Popovich didn’t have a problem with it last week."

Only thing that can come out of this that will ultimately be any good is if....

Babby convinces Tim DUncan to trash his loyalty to the Spurs and sign with the Suns as a FA next year so that he and Nash can make one last run. Spurs are over, but with what we have here, if you add Duncan, start making the rings baby.

Of course, Duncan would never actually sign here, but that would be a coup for Babby.

Otherwise, this is another example of stuff that sounds good on paper but will turn out tragic!
