Better value: Richard Jefferson or Hedo Turkoglu?

Who would you rather have?

Both are getting $40 million in the next 4 years (4th year partial guarantee)

Richard Jefferson is 6'7" and 30 yrs old, Hedo Turkoglu is 6'10" and 31

NOTE: This is NOT a trade post, simply a comparison of value.  I just saw that Jefferson signed for the same money as Turkoglu gets for the next 4 years.  It was an interesting comparison of value, is all.

Hedo, no question

Especially considering the Suns. The team has enough slashers … they don’t need another slashing small forward.

I’m really shocked the Spurs did this. Richard Jefferson gift wrapped them a chance to get out from under his big contract when it was obvious he fit poorly. But no, they went right back for more.

there MUST have been an agreement

that he would get this contract. Otherwise, it made NO sense at all to opt out of 15 guaranteed million. I remember Tom Gugliotta, the summer before his final player-optoin guaranteed 10+ mil from the Suns, being asked about opting out. He playfully laughed at the reporter, and said he wasn’t stupid.

Are we basing this off of last season's numbers or the bulk of their careers...?

I guess we have to take Hedo…Theoretically he can play PF……

Why wasn’t their a Carl landry or J.J Hickson option there…?

Jefferson stunk against the Suns

Is anyone remembering that Richard Jefferson had an awful series against the Suns this summer? In light of that, why are we bothering to discuss him?

by 8472species on Jul 21, 2010 8:47 PM MDT reply actions

simply the size of the contracts

they are both the same, and people thought Hedo’s contract was “untradeable” and couldn’t understand why we got him.

Theres no potential trade at all. it was just a ‘who would you rather’ question

Jefferson started faded into obscurity right after the Bucks traded for him.

He’ll be like Vince Carter here, the difference is that his contract gonna run longer.

Hedo, not even close. As it was said on AZCentral.com, Hedo's ball-handiling ability is something that we haven't had since JJ left;

this will allow the Suns to better use nash as a shooter and take some pressure off of him in crucial moments of an intense game. In other words, not only do we get a Mr. Big Shot but also a Walking Mismatch. RJ would not only ruin the spacing but I read somewhere that RJ used the turnaround mid-range J as his main go-to option; also, in said article, (That I unfortunately not remember the name of) the Go to option of Richard Jefferson had the least used/ most ineffective jumpshot at such a high rate in the NBA. In other words, RJ’s jumpshot is rather useless, but also, we can’t play RJ at PF like we can with Hedo.

F*ck you Rob Sarver!

by Grockcubs on Jul 21, 2010 10:40 PM MDT reply actions

it would be nice to have someone

expecting to take end-game shots. I can’t count how many times the Suns have flubbed a last-second shot attempt, either by Nash failing to get himself open or Amare drawing an offensive foul…

Blogging Suns Basketball at Bright Side of the Sun

by Alex Laugan on Jul 22, 2010 7:57 AM MDT up reply actions

In the Nash era Suns are money in the 4th quarter
  • Mike D’amntoni and Alvin Gentry are both great at drawing up out of bounds plays
  • We have had great 3pt shooters on our team
  • Our shooters are clutch:

Nash, Barbosa, Tim Thomas, J Rich, Raja Bell, Jared Dudley to name a few in the Nash era.

Although it is always nice to have another player who can make a big shot, (especially one who can create his own shot) I think it is unfair to say that the Suns need someone who can make a game winner.

Recently, the Suns have not been short on shooters with ice in their veins.

by Nash Ramblah on Jul 22, 2010 2:51 PM MDT up reply actions

well I've seen the Suns have trouble with last-second shots

sometimes, and its nice to have another option who can create his own.

On that list, only JRich (once) actually created a last-second shot with the ball in his hands besides Nash. The others have done the catch-and-shoot thing, but only on a Nash assist.

Have we already had a post about Robin Lopez’ withdrawal from the Olympic team? His back is hurt again. I’m dismayed. So apparently he is injury-prone. Damn.

In an article on ESPN, it said Robin was off the Worlds team to rehab his back.

by Dropkick434 on Jul 22, 2010 9:01 AM MDT up reply actions

Of course the organization is going to say that.

As much as I hate to inform everyone on here, Robin Lopez’s back is going to ruin his career. This is something that I have been keeping in hoping that it would go away, but I want to get it off my chest, and burden you all a bit. A man his size with a bulging disc is a HUGE problem. I mean HUGE! Here’s an example that hits close to home…Any Cardinals fans in here? Gerald Hayes just had back surgery for a similar issue. The Cardinals organization has been saying all offseason that they were holding him out for precautionary reasons. Nope. His back is jacked up. And so is Robin’s. I know you don’t want to believe me because we have such high hopes for the guy, but this back issue is here to stay. Operating on a bulging disc is a last ditch scenario. The disc(s) sits perpinducular to each vertical vertebrae in the back. The discs act as a buffer/cushion between vertebrae. When you have a bulging disc it’s NOT CURABLE! Ask anyone who has similar back problems. They don’t go away. A buging disc is debilitating, but something that can be played with albeit with lots of pain. His back is not fine, but he can play with it. Robin Lopez will never play a full 82 game schedule ever. Why doesn’t Robin go under the knife like Hayes did? Like I said it is a last ditch scenario. Surgery to repair a bulging disc involves removing the disc, in which case there is no cushion/buffer between vertebrae. Im not sure what they replace the original disc(s) with in that case, but surgery for such issues can prove to make the injury even worse. So for now, Robin Lopez will play with varying levels of debilitating pain EVERY time he is on the basketball court. Im getting tired of doctor talk, but there is more of this to come. The day this situation was explained to me by a world class medical equipment development back specialist, Dr. Sontag, I was sooo upset. Sorry Suns fans.

There’s opinions, there’s strong opinions, and there’s saying things are certain when they’re not. To say that a bulging disk is NOT CURABLE is going a little too far. Sure, Robin’s injury may linger, but you hurt your argument by overstating.

by Stanley B on Jul 22, 2010 1:04 AM MDT reply actions

Wow...good research Alex!

To be honest…I already loved the Hedo signing, even more so that acquiring Childress. Don’t get me wrong, I loved both of them, but have always thought Turkoglu was a perfect fit for this team….and now he’s actually here!

Add that to the fact that we were able to trade Barbosa, who we all knew would receive very little playing time in our new system, and effectively add only $3mil more a year than we were paying LB for a starting PF who can do it all!

However, seeing that the Spurs are paying Jefferson the same amount makes me love this signing even more. Not that it benefits us in any way, but just that I love seeing us get the upper hand on the Spurs in any way possible…since it happens so infrequently.

Richard Jefferson was the most overrated player in the NBA for several years

I first met him at ASU summer camp. Don Newman, ASU’s coach at the time, was recruiting two valley players, Donnell Knight from St. Mary’s and Richard Jefferson from Moon Valley. Imo Knight was the better player at the and he never became more than ASU’s 6th or 7th man. I happened to be on Jefferson’s team and of the 8 games we played that week he only played in 3 of them, 2 we lost. Ever since then I have always followed his career closely and it always surprised how well his game has been received over the years. I’ve always hated his game. He’s never really improved/changed his game since then. He still has an extremely slow release on his J, he’s still soft, doesn’t defend particularly well and has no killer instinct. His game is going to continue to diminish year after year as his athleticism gets worse with age. That said, he’s made tens of millions and done well for himself and he’s deserved whatever he’s been able to get, but the player the Spurs will be getting over the life of that contract is not worth more than MLE $. I can’t think of one reason how someone could argue he’s worth over the MLE. I would rather have CHildress than Jefferson.
Hedo is very similar in that he too just came off a abhorrent season in which he didn’t earn his 8 figure salary. He’s either going to play like he did in Toronto last year and be the same underwhelming 10 million a year slouch that Jefferson is going to prove to be with the Spurs. I desperately hope that doesn’t happen, but I know he can’t get any worse than that at least. Or he’s going to come to camp in shape, slightly refreshed from not having to go thru playoff basketball, and in game shape from playing for Turkey in the World Championships. I will be trying to catch every Turkey game to see how Hedo looks, and anyone who wants some advanced insight into what we will be getting from him next season should be trying to do the same.
Answer to post: HEDO

NO COMPETITION

Richard Jefferson said himself that every team has an asshole and that he fills that role. that would not work in this system. Everyone knows T-Griff is the team asshole.

wait..back up, what the F* is a "chris duhon"?

by DustinAe on Jul 22, 2010 8:54 AM MDT reply actions

Jefferson's Is Washed Up

Jefferson’s game is based completely around his athleticism. Everyone knows, that’s the first thing to go as a player ages. Just look at ‘Trix. I wouldn’t touch Jefferson with a ten foot pole. I’m ecstatic that he will be killing the Spurs’ cap for the next 4 seasons.

Hedo will age nicely as he can shoot the J and has great court vision. Both are attributes that don’t diminish with age.

I wouldn't have RJ on my team

because he unnerves me. I have never seen a single hair on his head. Not even stubble in the beard area or anything. I don’t trust him. He’s disruptive to team chemistry because when everyone is in the film room or in shootarounds, RJ is meticulously shaving every inch of his head and face, and probably his arms and legs and who knows what else.

The Spurs have commited to $40 mil for him, but that doesn’t include all of his shaving utensils that he goes through every day that the Spurs will have to keep stocked in the clubhouse. Those Schick Quattro and Mach 3 razor cartridges are like $20 for a pack of 4! SA will go broke, RJ’s head will always be smooth as an egg, and he’ll shoot 41% will the Spurs hover around mediocrity.

I say no thanks, RJ. No thanks indeed.

RJ

I think R J and Hedo had similar seasons in that they both didin’t live up to expectations. RJ has been working out with Greg Popovich personally and was the best sf on the market available to them thats why we resigned him (plus all the new spurs suck there first season according to Tony Parker). Hedo had to be traded because of his poor attitude and bad relationship with the fans and the team.
