Daily Links - Barnes, Lawal, Lou... And Suns To Miss Playoffs

Welcome to my first Daily Links post.

I went searching for some reports on the Suns' GM search and found nothing. This is surprising to me, but Childress and Turkoglu dropped out of thin air so I guess the Suns' GM announcement will do the same.  The only reason Demps hit the rumor mill was a source close to him, not the Suns.  Sarver does not seem to suffer leakers in his new front office.

But I did find some good nuggets of info, anyway.

Will the Suns really miss the playoffs?  Update on Suns PF options, and is there one more really good PF option out there for the Suns?  What's left the FA market?

Kobe Bryant, Lakers still poised to be class of West and NBA - Ian Thomsen - SI.com

Here's an early look at the top of the Western Conference, focusing on teams that can win 50 games or more next season. This list does not include the Phoenix Suns, who won 54 games last season and reached the Western Conference finals. My view is that adding Hedo Turkoglu and Josh Childress will not be enough to make up for the loss of Amar'e Stoudemire. (my view is that Ian Thomsen is playing par for the course. He's always discounted the Suns)

How the Suns can use Hedo Turkoglu on offense| Valley of the Suns

Hedo Turkoglu may not be a prototypical power forward but what he brings to the Phoenix Suns outweighs his lack of power forward skills.

2010-2011 NBA Season Preview: Eastern Conference - Gack Sports

Here's one interpretation of Cleveland's chances next year, and it's pretty bad. They have not signed a single player this offseason. Next year's projected top pick is Harrison Barnes, reported to be a LeBron type player. Might Cleveland want to dump players to start over next summer? Anderson Varejao would be very, very good in a Suns uni.

Free Agency: Who's Left? - Basketball News & NBA Rumors -

Man, there are SLIM PICKINS left on the free agent market. I mean really, it's bad when Jarron Collins is rated (here) as the second-best Center left available. And remember, Cleveland has not yet signed anybody this offseason... Oh, and check out the Lou sighting.

NBA Rookie Rankings: Summer league wrap - ESPN

Our own Gani Lawal ranked as the 13th best rookie in summer league, but Thorpe is not as high on Gani's immediate transition to the NBA.

Matt Barnes signs 2-year deal with Lakers - BostonHerald.com

Barnes to LA. I smiled when I saw this. I love what Matt Barnes brings, but I'm also thinking that the Lakers will win at least 2 fewer games next season with him in the rotation. Suns and Magic fans know what I mean.

I just dont F%&*ing get it!

I mean, the Spurs gain an unpoven Euro-player and resign the most ineffective player in their line-up and that boosts them to playoff style 50 wins???

Dallas lets their main center go (Dampier) and resigns Haywood but they are expecting Beaubois to be to massively improved that they break 50+ yet again? Not a word about their consistent troubles in the playoffs or that obviously Jason Terry and Jason Kidd are totally over the hump leaving Dirk with Caron Butler as a backup?

And why the heck should the Thunder be considered contenders? They made NO moves in the offseason and if anything will only take a step back. Durant may have not reached his ceiling yet, but he is damn close. And Jeff Green certainly has and likely so has Westbrooke. Players continue to evolve over their careers but the first few years are always the biggest gains. They won’t be that much better. Maybe fractionally.

The Rocket have a case for getting better. Yao returns. Budinger looks really good. Kevin Martin has a revitalized role. And they have finally shed themselves of McGrady’s issues both on and off the court.

Portland is the same. They made no big moves, but they will get back all that they lost over the year. Still, I can’t see how two players with serious knee injuries will play the same as they did. However, if they stay healthy, Portland will be formidable.

Nugget? Who can tell. With Carl back things will go more smoothly but with Melo’s impending departure don’t be surprised if they crumble under the weight.

Jazz. Against all odds the Jazz actually came out pretty good this summer. They lost Boozer but gained Jefferson. A fair trade I think. But losing Korver will be bigger than I think they realize. His shooting was really good for them. Also, the impending departure of Kirilenko will cause some chemistry issues.

My point here is that all of these teams has issues that they will have to deal with be they hump issues or integration of new players. In all of this, the Suns are left out why? Because they lost Amare? Seriously? Is this guy even paying attention to what moves the teams are making? I mean, besides the All-Star moves? This type of “journalism” unsanctionable.

In the Spurs' defense (never thought I'd say this):

Tiago Splitter looks like a straight up stud. Won the MVP of the Spanish League last year, and his game should translate very well to the NBA.

Dampier and Chandler cancel each other out, unless Chandler gets injured (again). If that happens, I’d say the Mavs struggle.

I’m not going to lie, I love Oklahoma City. I’m on the bandwagon. Plus, James Harden will have had an offseason and more time to develop his game. They may not have made tons of moves, but they have a lot of assets (anyone remember BJ Mullens?) that, if they develop into suitable players, they could continue improving without making any moves.

If Portland is healthy, they could be the dark horse in the West.

Kirilenko is a chemistry issue. He got a huge contract after a few good years (hard to fault ‘em for that, I’d have given it to him as well) but is now constantly injured and starting to lose a step. He’s still a valuable asset, but my thinking is that Kirilenko thinks he’s better than he actually is. Maybe he should have lunch with Matt Barnes. I bet they’d get into a rousing match of one upping each other.

OKC now has a target on their backs

its harder to win when the other team knows you can. Last year, they got some wins by being underestimated. The just might struggle a bit more, or at least look like they are.

I like OKC

But don’t think they’ll make a dramatic improvement, one of the reasons being what you mentioned.
People tend to get ahead of themselves after a team or player has a breakout year. No one in this league figures out how to win consistently without getting knocked on their asses a few times, and the Thunderbolts are probably a year or two away still.
Plus, they haven’t had to deal with significant injuries yet. They will eventually.

Yeah that is what I am thinking..

the funny thing is that OKC is where NO went after Katrina. And with all the SuperSonics drama that happened a couple of years back I would not be at all sad to see OKC fade into obscurity and have to dump Durant because they can’t afford him.

Easy answers to your questions

Spurs: Tiago Splitter is hardly unproven. He’s 25 and dominates Europe. Jefferson resigned for cheaper.

Dallas: Dumping Dampier for Chandler is an upgrade and Haywood for a whole year is an upgrade

OKC: Media darlings and winning those two games against Lakers boosted their status. Westbrook will get better, not worse. Your first two years comment is ridiculous. Players progress at different rates. Nash and Kobe for instance. Look out for OKC if they ever DO get a FA or a decent big man.

Portland: Injuries heal when you are young. Full season of Oden and Camby could be dangerous.

Jazz: The sooner AK leaves, the better. He is weak and makes $15 mil+.

The media only knows the Suns with Amare so they are going to handicap the Suns automatically. They forget the injury year when Diaw stepped in. That is what the Suns will attempt to duplicate. Except Turk and Warrick are better then Diaw.

Jackson will use Barnes the right way

by not allowing him to shoot as much and maximizing his defensive energy. Shannon Brown played himself out of LA. No more RnB videos for you pretty boy! Too bad, he really was the diamond in the rough in that Vlad for Morrison trade.

Jefferson had an awful year, but Jefferson at 1/2 the price is a great trade asset.

Barnes

doesn’t care what the coach wants, once he’s on the court.

I really like the VOS article about Turk at PF - it gives a hint of some of the 'unconventional' ways that Gentry can use Turk.

I really think Gentry and this team are going to turn Turk into a major asset. I’m really excited to see what they come up with. I’m really looking for a fast start out of the gate – we are going to surprise some people this year.

I think OKC and Portland will be real players this year – SA will be improved, I think Memphis could be a surprise, and I think the Kings might just be pretty good. Dallas and Denver might be disappointments, New Orleans looks like it will suck, and Utah could be good, but they might suck, too. I don’t think the Lakers are going to be as good this year – Blake is great, but I think the injury bug is going to hit them hard.
Can we start already?

We’ll just have to come back again and make them eat their words!
And just for the record, there was this article on NBA.com a week or so ago that had us at 3rd for next season, behind thunder and lakers. I couldnt find the article again though sadly.

I read that article on NBA as well...

It also had OKC as the 2nd seed, I believe… I am kind of doubting that, but we will see. Still no major low post presence and they do not play inside-out ball like the Magic and Suns do… Also, not many veterans on the team.

Portland and Greg Oden

About Greg Oden: does Portland still have high hopes for Greg Oden, or have they lowered their expectations because he’s so injury prone? If they’ve sort of given up on him, I’d want to acquire him as that backup to Robin Lopez. I’d gamble on him if the price weren’t very high.

by 8472species on Jul 23, 2010 11:28 AM MDT reply actions

They have not given up on him, BUT

They did give Camby 10 mil a season before he hit the FA market and he’s on the wrong side of 35.

Also Oden is eligible for an extension, but has not received an offer. Roy and Aldridge got HUGE extensions. Tough to say what the Blazers will do with a potential new CBA on the way, which could save them money on Oden.

Portland will offer an extension at some point and I imagine Oden will show loyalty for them sticking with him through thick and thin.

Portland is already at/over the lux tax line

so at some point they either have to move someone or win deep in the playoffs. Thats what happens when you’re younguns grow up. they go from 40 mil payroll and 54 wins 2 yrs ago to over the lux tax and lucky to match that this coming year

@ Alex

http://games.espn.go.com/nba/tradeMachine?tradeId=25qh8k4

thinking for a while and above is my trade for J Smooth, to complete it(cos trade machine does not allow me to) i would send the draft rights to Gani Lawal to ATL along with 2 first round unprotected draft picks(2012 &2014) while ATL can swap 1st round picks with us in (2011&2013&2015) and send LOU’s bird rights (if you can do that or in a sign and trade) to ATL and send HWarrick to the nets when we can send him on his own in September.

i know i sound crazy (whats new) but i think it benefits all sides especially the suns of course and of course i would miss JSPN but i would rather have J smooth than JDud and CLEE would be awesome next to nash.

Crazy enough to work YES but it will not happen.

I am pretty sure

the Hawks would do that deal… 2 first rounders and 3 swaps? They can then move J Rich at the deadline and get a solid PG

Stoudemire to the 10th floor will soon be Warrick to the 10th floor!

by SunsFanForever on Jul 23, 2010 1:04 PM MDT up reply actions

The Hawks do not want draft picks they want players.

They need to make a run at winning now to justify Joe Johnson’s insane contract.

They have no need for Jared Dudley, Lou Amundson, Gani Lawal, or Earl Clark. They won’t move one of their best players for a backup SF, a backup PF, and two less than promising rookie forwards when what they need is a point guard and a center.

Additionally, the deal phxuk suggested gives J-Rich’s contract to the Nets, not the Hawks.

by waxmonkey on Jul 23, 2010 2:07 PM MDT up reply actions

I know he suggested J Rich to Nets

But that would be a key piece that the Hawks would want to get so that they could dump him to make room to re-sign Horford and as you said, justify JJ’s contract

Stoudemire to the 10th floor will soon be Warrick to the 10th floor!

Tiago splitter>turk and childress, great to know that duncan who is their heart and soul is going to be another year older.

It was duncan that exploded on a every other game basis in the playoffs not nash or hill, who have been in teh league longer than duncan. Do they not realize that robin lopez’s rebounding numbers can only get better? and that goran is anotehr year closer to his prime? I like being the underdog b/c everyone will expect the suns to roll over and die, again. Fault me for being a homer but i think that either clark or warrick will have a major contribution to this team this season, enough so that we make it back to the playoffs. Every team has their problems, the suns included, but not every team has a two time MVP running the show.

I think it’s a good read. Chris Paul is definitely one of those guys I thought would be humble and stick with the Hornets. He built a great reputation there. If he screws it up, he’s basically LeBron 2.0.

CP3 was supposed to be the next Steve Nash or Tim Duncan of the future. He will be the superstar that stays dedicated to his franchise and puts loyalty over wealth. Don’t throw that down the toilet just because LeBron did. CP3, you’re better than that.
