Suns Still Searching For Back-up Big Man

I'm not going to lie: I am not all that excited about what I am about to write.

The Suns are still looking for a back-up big (so I've been told), so I suppose I owe it to you to go through these names and have a chat about it.

But seriously, when you see the names I am about to list, you will see why there's so little to be excited about.

Here's what's out there (in no particular order):

Shameless Plug for a couple of really good reads:

In Arizona, We Root For Balance Sheets - SB Nation Arizona - by Dennis Tarwood (aka Tuffy)
Arizona sports fans cheer for solvency, debt service, tax avoidance, and lockouts. Just like when we were kids!

A Letter To The D-backs Front Office - Desert Dirt - SB Nation Arizona by Justin Burning
Dear D-backs Front Office Guys, I liked watching Dan Haren pitch and now you've taken that from me, you jerks. And now you want to trade Edwin Jackson, whose no-hitter was about the only positive thing of note this season.

Yo Stat Geeks, Put Down The Calculator And Talk To People - Desert Dirt - SB Nation Arizona by Seth
I'm not against the advanced stats movement in sports. Win Shares. WAR. All that stuff has value and is what you get when you bring smart people and their slide rules to the sporting world.

Star-divide

Mark Blount. 7-0. 34 years old

Mark didn't play at all last season and only saw the court in 20 games the season before. There was a time when Blount was a pretty decent player. Take, for example, his best season (06-07), when he put up 12 points and six rebounds in 31 minutes as a starter for that memorable Minnesota Timberwolves team that won 32 games. On the other hand, he's big and he's made $44 million over his career, so he must be worth something to someone (family not included).

Didier Ilunga-Mbenga. 7-0. 29 years old.

You certainly remember DJ from the 12 (total) minutes he played as part of the LA Lakers 2009-10 championship run. One thing you can't take away from Didier, he's a two-time NBA champion and you are not. And he's big, too.

Oleksiy Pecherov. 7-0. 24 years old.

Oleksiy is probably most known by fans for his resemblance to the Family Guy cartoon character, Stewie. See for yourself. He is kind of skilled, too, and has decent range for a big man and allegedly rebounds the ball well. He also looks like a cartoon character according to the Washington Post, which none of the other guys can say.

Unfortunately for Pecherov's fan(s), he is rumored to be close to returning to Europe where his brand of 7 footer is coveted and not mocked mercilessly.

Rasho Nesterovic. 7-0. 34 years old.

Rasho (aka Radoslav to his mother) is another former NBA champion. He's not known for his shooting touch, or rebounding or defense, but he is known for being Slovenian, which has obvious advantages to the Phoenix Suns, who are well on their way to becoming the Former Yugoslavian Suns. He's also big.

Josh Boone. 6-10. 25 years old.

What does Josh Boone bring, aside from his experience playing 16 minutes per game for one of the worst teams in NBA history, the 2009-10 New Jersey Nets? Cool hair, and Suns fans know how valuable that is. He is more athletic than the other guys, but he's also shorter. That's all I can think to say about Boone.

Kwame Brown. 6-11. 27 years old.

He might have hands of stone, but he is a former number one overall draft pick and he's big.

Shaquille O'Neal. 7-1. 56 years old.

Just kidding. Shaq isn't coming back to Phoenix.

Trade?

There's not many better options out there. In fact, I am not sure there's any other options out there for a back-up center. Not unless the Suns were willing to give up some assets to try and get a guy like DeAndre Jordan from the Clippers, Nazr Mohammed from the Bobcats, or Hilton Armstrong from the Wizards.

The reality is, there aren't a lot of good options out there even if the Suns were willing to trade Jared Dudley, whose rookie contract and Twitter fame make him a prized asset. If you told me that Suns could trade Dudley for Marcin Gortat, I would say, "Yes, please".

But what else is there on the back-up center market? Not much is the answer. Not much.

Note: Anyone who suggests Eddy Curry will be immediately banned for life.

Could we have Lou for the minimun salarie?

No one has made an offer so why not come in an try to get him. He likes the Suns so why not?
I know he is not a “true” center but we are talking about just in case or few minutes. If there is an injury i would feel better with Lou than most of the guys above. In case he wants more money or minutes then I go with Mbenga

I’d also rather Lou than any of them.

that was too low for him to accept. So, Suns did make an offer. Lou wants more money.

For more options

I suggest Mark Deeks’ recent column on 59 big men available.

From that list, I think I’d throw in guys like Chris Hunter, Pops Mensah-Bonsu, Etan Thomas and maybe Stromile Swift.

Sure, those names are hardly impressive

But we’re really only talking about a guy who will play the Jarron Collins role, right? And, that role isn’t much more than “guy who will take up space”. I know. Let’s shake thing up and bring in his twin brother Jason to do that for us this year!

I agree with East Bay Ray's comment up above.

This would be a guy who would likely have a Jarron Collins-like roll, and although none of these guys are that impressive, I’m sure they’d be fine in that roll.

I’d take Mbenga tho, mainly just cause I don’t know much about the others. If Mbenga was good enough for the Lakers as a “just-in-case” center, then I don’t see why he wouldn’t bee good enough for the Suns.

by iwasneveryoung on Jul 27, 2010 4:13 PM MDT reply actions

He would have the advantage of having practiced against the Lakers.

Not true. Rza's right

At this point in their careers DeAndre Jordan is unquestionably better than Earl Clark. How you could even come to that conclusion I don’t know. Clark played the least amount of minutes of all last year’s first round picks. He had a horrible year no matter which way you look at it. I don’t want to look up their stats and throw them around in Jordan’s favor, but I watched a lot of Clippers game on league pass and Jordan had some monster games last year. I don’t think Clark has had a monster game since high school!

MBenga would be good in our system..

ok defensive player, poor offensive player, but can run like a gazelle…
the kind of guy for whom you design 3 or 4 plays, and make sure he gets them down, so that they become reliable options.

Inquiring minds want to know, Seth

Are we looking for a guy who we expect to get significant minutes, or not? And, my conspiracy theory of the day: is this is any way an indication that Suns brass is a little spooked by Lopez’s back condition?

suns were looking for a backup big

a while ago. Just like jarron collins last season.

I don't think so

I think they are fine w/ Robin but he did have two injuries last year so depth is never a bad thing. I also think that as much as they like Gani and perhaps Dwayne Collins, they don’t expect much from them as rookies. It takes time. They want a vet they can trust similar to Jarron. A pro.

I’ve heard one name they are high on but I’m not going to repeat it yet. In part b/c I shouldn’t and in part b/c of the Golden Rule in that I have nothing nice to say so I want to do more research on this guy.

Hey, I know a guy who's like Jarron

Jarron Collins himself! Why not just bring him back, if that’s what we’re looking for? This role player needs to be a good locker room guy, a guy who doesn’t mind spending nearly all of his time riding the pine, costs the league minimum, plays decent fundamental defense and has zero offensive game outside of setting picks. OK, I made up that last one one, but this describes Jarron. For an end of the bench, 3rd team center, what else do we expect?

by East Bay Ray on Jul 27, 2010 9:33 PM MDT up reply actions

Pat Burke anyone?

Might as well make it him because that list of guys shouldn’t do any more than what he did on this roster. Shoot garbage time three pointers to excite the fans.

what about

rod benson
or
jahidi white

benson plays great block and lower defense and has average scoring ability while jahidi white is a MAN.

Jahidi White was huge. I remember him blocking a shot by Shaquille O’Neal in one Suns game. Wonder why he vanished.

He was taken in the expansion draft, then waived, then signed by Cleveland,

and waived – because of injuries. Then he appeared as a huge alien in a bad movie.

Speaking of Oliver Miller, what do you think of the time the Gorilla did an impression of Oliver Miller by wearing a fat suit? It was funny, but David Leibowitz excoriated it for being very rude and mean-spirited.

What about a trade with LAC for DeAndre Jordan

DeAndre Jordan

I think he is a project who will stick around here in LA. That’s just the impression I get, he definitely has good upside.

Former Yugoslavia Suns

LOL… Seth you liked it here didn’t you :-)

but we miss a Croat… unfortunatelly Toni Kukoc is retired, but we have a young prospect Ante Tomic, watch him in this year’s Worlds… he plays in Real Madrid now but I believe he is drafted as a 2nd rounder by Pacers few years ago… he is Gasol-type of player and just needs to gain some pounds… great passer and shooter… he will surely play in NBA in 1-2 years

None of these centers are worth signing...

I would rather take our chances with Robin and Frye, and use one of our new PF’s like Lawal or Collins to fill in as 3rd string center in a pinch.

I think we would be better served looking for another true center to add to our roster next season.

by 7footer on Jul 28, 2010 11:38 AM MDT reply actions

hey guys, don't shoot me but..

.. seeing as how we have quite of a problem @ the PF spot, i just tried this on the trade machine and.. well, it worked.

J.rich & E. clark goes to CLE
A.jamison & A.parker goes to PHX

pros: we get a legit PF, an all-star, and another good wing man
cons: we give up jrich and our young stud, and antawn’s contract is for another 2 years @ like $14m each. and parker’s old.

pg: nash, dragic
sg: hedo, parker
sf: grant, jared, josh
pf: jamison, warick, lawal
c: lopez, frye, collins

thoughts?
