Around SBN: Nevin Shapiro Vows To Bring Down Miami

David Lee Very Unlikely In Phoenix

Don't get your hopes up for David Lee in a Suns uniform.

With Chris Bosh and Dwyane Wade committing to Miami today, and LBJ leaning back to Cleveland (I mean, can you imagine the horror of not only leaving his home town but rubbing it in their faces via an hour-long nationally televised announcement?!?!?), there are a number of teams left holding the money bag.

Chicago spent a year clearing cap space for this summer (Hinrich, Salmons, Tyrus Thomas, etc.) and now has 30 mil in a briefcase ready to spend.  NJ Nets have a new billionaire owner and 30 mil to spend.  NY Knicks still have 20 mil or so to spend.  Minnesota has been courting Lee, as well. Hell, if Cleveland DOES lose LeBron (likely second choice being Miami with Wade and Bosh), then throw them in the mix, too.

David Lee and Carlos Boozer are the next best free agents left.

And they are salivating. They can smell the fear and desperation in the air. They can smell the money about to be laid at their feet.

Why would Lee's agent drop out early, and take less money to sign-and-trade with the Suns tomorrow?

Cleveland can't do anything even with Lebron gone

unless they’re trading away LBJ via sign and trade, which Dan Gilbert said he won’t do. CLE is so far over the cap/tax line that even after losing James they’ll only have MLE to play with.

Grant Hill is totally the next MJ!!

Well, the Suns COULD offer the same money as those other teams

Since it’s via sign-and-trade. They’re just not likely to, and they shouldn’t.

I'm really dissapointed in the suns if they can't get someone in return for Amare.

I agree with you the Suns could offer the same money. I heard a comment from that Walters guy saying that they would be all for giving back to the Suns. But I guess this is it. David Lee will upgrade the Warriors big time. I think its down to 3 teams for Lebron tonight. Miami, New York and Cleveland.

If your agent is good, you can probably also get incentive bonuses for staying alive and a 500% trade kicker and an opt out clause after each day and coupons for foot massage..

One thing we can't rule out.

Though this is not commonplace in todays free agency, but maybe a player signs somewhere because he wants to win. We saw our star player speak these words with his mouth but totally contradict them with his actions. Looks like the Bulls are going to loose out on any of the big 4-5-6 so they are not going to be a contender. Miami has their guys locked up and NY literally has nothing but Amare and will continue to suck even in a weak Eastern conference. So, if Lee wants to go to a contender, his only choice seems to be to go to Phoenix. I have said this before but I think Lee at 5/70 is a good deal. Lee may be considered a step below these other players and that contract shows that value. I would even consider higher, especially considering this could be Nash’s last year in a Suns uniform.

If Nash was a free agent now, imagine what kind of offers he’d be getting. 2 years and $22M? Ha.

That is only 65% of what Amare is getting. Considering that Lee is at least 90-95% of Amare that is a heck of a deal.

And it could be out there. No official offers have come about Lee, but most accounts has him at 11-14 million. So “within” our budget.

Like the GMs that gave Drew Gooden the MLE and Darko Milicic 5/20. So Miami is the only one that could semi improve itself but that also requires getting some guys taking minimum to play with Bosh and Wade. If Lebron stays in Cleveland, they are the same. The Knicks may win 5 games more with Amare. The Nets same team but overpaying some mid level players. Chicago stays the same and would do the same as the Nets.
With all said and done, I would rather be the Suns, with some cap space moving in the new CBA rather overpay for some midlevel players that we all will regret and give out I wish scenarios of how to trade him like we did for Jrich initially.

What if Boozer and Ray Allen go to Chicago?

Or if Lebron goes to NY, they pick up a point guard – NJ still has a lot of money to spend, as well. Things aren’t done moving around. The East could be a lot more competitive this year.

totally agree

and chicago/nj/ny will also overpay for people since lebron doesn’t go with them….i think he stays in CLE…but wherever he goes the OTHER teams with cash to spend will get left out and overpay for talent…..but back to yyour point: the east will be ALOT more competitive adn fun to watch this year…

by Los_Suns on Jul 7, 2010 10:59 AM MDT up reply actions

True

Their best perimeter defender Hinrich is gone though, Rose, Noah, Boozer and/or Ray Allen could be competitive. Allen is inkling more towards resigning with the Celtics. Tom Thibodeau speciality is defense with only Noah being the defensive guy in the team. We have no idea about Thibodeau’s offensive pedigree. Lots of questions with that team if Wade and/or Lebron dont sign with them.

by atkammoh on Jul 7, 2010 11:02 AM MDT up reply actions

Well

so far only one big name west player has gone east. All the players you are talking about are already in the eastern conference so how do they get that much better by keeping their own players. And if Lee moves west what does that mean?

by Suns Fan For Life on Jul 7, 2010 11:10 AM MDT up reply actions

Well the Wolves are the only west team interested in Lee and I heard rumors about SnT for Boozer and Lee. But with Amare already in NY, they dont need Boozer unless Amare is ready to play center again.

so Miami isn’t better today then they were last season?

I think the west will still be better as a whole…but atop the east those teams are legit and if their players don’t come west but reshuffle to make their teams better, then they are better.

by Los_Suns on Jul 7, 2010 11:16 AM MDT up reply actions

If Lee moves west, and Boozer stays in the West, not so much of a power shift.

But the money, and the cap room, is mostly in the East. Besides, there will now be much better teams in the East than last year. Boston is trying to keep it together, but they have injuries, retirements, and another year of age – NY and NJ were jokes last year, but probably not so much this year. Chicago will improve, and Miami? Powerhouse. Orlando will be a lot different – maybe better, maybe not, but certainly dangerous. Milwaukee should also be very good this year.
The exodus isn’t over, either. Miami, NJ, and Miami still have to fill out those rosters, so there will be more players moving west to east – maybe not marquis players, but lots of role players.

Not all doom and gloom

I know this may only be asliver of light, but there is some talk that teams are preparing for the harsh realities of next years renegotiating (i.e. the Suns). I am not sure teams are just going to throw all there money away. Only one player has gotten the max that some weren’t thinking of (Gay). Amare and Johnson were figured as already getting them. I know this is not good consolidation, but there may be some form of decency left in the NBA. Lets hope Lee is one of those guys.

by Suns Fan For Life on Jul 7, 2010 10:02 AM MDT reply actions

Steve Kerr on Colin Cowherd this morning

Did anybody catch this? I tuned in late to it, so missed him talking about the Suns. However, I did hear him discuss Amare and the rest of the league’s activity. He said the following notable things:
Regarding Amare, he thinks Amare’s attitude and leadership have greatly improved over the last couple of years, but still thinks Amare might struggle some in the face of the pressure of the New York media, especially given that there is nobody else there to share the heat with him.
He also said that the Knicks need to pick up another big who is a good defender, implying the obvious that Amare is not a good defender.
And, then he let out this gem when talking about Dwyane Wade. He thought there was a good chance that Wade was going to go to Chicago, saying: “I thought Wade was going to be the only real superstar (my emphasis) to jump ship.” You think it’s safe to assume that Amare would take offense that Kerr doesn’t consider him to be a real superstar? Cowherd made no note of this when Kerr said it, but I picked it up right away.

by East Bay Ray on Jul 7, 2010 10:23 AM MDT reply actions

I'm glad to hear this, as I want no part of David Lee

It would seem counterproductive to tie a big contract to a guy like him. If Sarv is going to spend a bunch of money on the frontline, it needs to be spent on size, esp after the Warrick signing.

It would make much more sense to bring in either Petro or Etan Thomas. Unfortunately, the frontline is starting to get ridiculously crowded and there are too many undersized players in the mix, esp if Clark plays at the 4.

Also, a David Lee signing would mean Nash, Lopez and Lee in the starting 5. We would look like the Indiana Pacers West.

Agree

Even with losing Amare, we still have a solid roster. Unless Lee comes in for cheap, there is no need for him to take up most of the cap space thereby hindering any future moves. Lee wants to get paid, he and his agent have been posturing with teams like the Nets and Wolves for god sake. Let him be happy getting paid elsewhere then say he wants to win initially, get paid less with the Suns and then cry about it in the future. After Nash and Grant retire, our greatest assets, mentoring will be gone, let the team grow up together and continue from there on.

Lets follow the OKC formula they started with Durant and Green.

The creature Hakim Warrick has been dubbed "Amare-lite"
That means less scoring, less-scoring, less-defense, less effort on crashing the glass, less-basketball IQ and less swagger.

by Grey_Hound on Jul 7, 2010 11:30 AM MDT up reply actions

Well thats 6 rings to equal Jordans legacy and 7 top it.

If Lebron has 10 years left in the league, he has to win 6 out of 10. His last years of wear and tear would make him slower, so give or take a year. So thats 6 or 7 rings in 9 years.
The first year with only Lebron and Amare is not going to win the chip so take that out, unless they get a third piece in their second year or a defensive big man and a semi competitive PG. That would make 7 rings in 8 years. You think that is possible?

No player can challenge Jordan's legacy.

He will forever be the known as the greatest player in NBA history, regardless of whether Kobe has 6 or 7 rings or if LeBron gets 6 or 7. He’ll just be up there as one of the greats but Jordan is in his own class because Jordan is the player that brought the NBA to prominence.

All players today can do is shape their own legacy, which Kobe has done. Now LeBron needs to shape his because Wade is already ahead of him in that regard.

The only way...

There is one way he could hold the special and still leave Cleveland. It would be a brilliant PR move too.

Make the 1 hour special about the difficulty of this desicion. Focus on the behind the scenes negotiating, the weight of the choices, his "inner turmoil". Basically, spend the entire hour humanizing James and showing everyone how difficult it was to come to this choice – a choice other than his home.

Now…THAT special would make him apear a lot less like an egomanical jerk. It would certainly keep his rep in Cleveland in tact, allowing the fans to save face from being ditched by giving them a "I understand why he did it" out. It would make the press fawn like little schoolgirls about how "mature" he’s become, and how wrong they were when they made comments about it being about the money.

Now…that said, a special like that would probably be flat out bullshit on every level. But I said it would be a brilliant PR move, not an honest one.

Either way, that’s the only way I see the special being able to end with James leaving. Any other way, and he’s going to look like the biggest asshole on the planet. I’m hoping he goes to NY (I like the Bulls too much to see his ego take over Chicago) and I hope the hour special is nothing but highlight clips and interviews about how great he is. If that’s the case, the backlash will be hilarious.

I'm fine with the TPE. I'm fine with Lee. I'm fine without him.

I just want the freakin’ season to start, already.
I have to trust that there is a master plan. If Lebron goes to Miami, it’s hard to imagine they wouldn’t win a few – there are always injuries, they still have to fill out the roster, egos could clash, but chances are good that they would win the East. If Boozer and Lee end up in the East, there will have been a major power shift, and the East could be the dominant conference. OKC, Portland, and Memphis are poised to make a move in the West – I think the Spurs, if they get Tiago, may be better than last year, Houston will be better…
It might be better to wait, stack up the assets, develop some young players, and see what happens.

If i'm pat riley

the second lebron signs with the heat, i’m on the phone to orlando offering d-wade for d-howard. Wade and Lebron are too similar imo to be truly effective together. Lbj-howard-bosh would be much better as howard/bosh don’t need the ball in their hands to be effective, there is a clear alpha dog (lebron) rather than risking a kobe-shaq scenario with two alpha dogs fighting over the team which would happen with lebron/wade.

He’s at a level that maybe 5 players a decade get to. I’d take him in a heartbeat – he’s a franchise player. Dwight is, too, but he needs more offensive skills. He can’t shoot, he can’t hit free throws, and he’s a liability late in the game. He may be great someday, but he’s not right now (defensively, he is)

Nobody cared about Lee last season

and he played for a weak little 1 year deal because that is all NY would give him.

Why would Sarver overpay for anybody this year when he can just wait one season for all the contract lengths and max. amounts to go significantly down?

it just put us below the luxury tax

so, for the first time in 6 yrs, the Suns are not paying 100% tax on 5-8 mil of its salaries…

but that doesn’t mean the Suns have room to spend. They are still AT the regular cap. They can only sign someone more than minimum in a Sign-n-Trade.

I mean, he made solid, any-other-summer bids

on Frye (4 yrs, 20 mil) and Amare (3yr extension at max) until all the other owners went crazy and started overpaying. Sarver had to adjust and raise his offers.

Example 1: last summer, Drew Gooden couldn’t get anyone to sign him until end of summer, and that was a 1-yr deal only. This summer, he gets 5 yrs, 34 mill on day 1 !!! And he didn’t even play well!

Example 2: last summer, Warrick couldn’t get anyone to sign him until end of summer, and that was a 1-yr deal only. This summer, he gets 4 yrs, 18 mil on day 1 !!! And he didn’t even play well!

Good lord, this is crazy stuff. Maybe, just maybe, Lee will see 55 wins on the horizon playing with Nash and will accept a lower salary. But that’s just a pipe dream. Ths might be his only payday. The Warriors are on the selling block right now and you’d have to think the new ownership will clean house. But, no matter what, a team seeking a fresh start shouldn’t have much use for a 70 year old head coach.
