Suns Blown Out By Rockets In 1st Summer League Game, Time To Panic?

First Amare leaves and now this 100-82 beating by the Rockets. Is this what we have to look forward to? OMG!!!!

Seriously, though, it was a pretty straight-on ass whooping thanks in large part to a Summer Suns roster that was over-matched by the raw talent of two Wildcats, Jordan Hill and Chase Budinger, along with Pat Patterson from Kentucky and last year's 32nd pick, guard Jermaine Taylor. Taylor led all scorers with 25 points and showed off his strong frame and quickness by getting to the rim and finishing with contract. He overpowered Matt Janning and finished with a team-high 7 rebounds as well. Nice player.

It was interesting watching Gani Lawal match up with Hill and Patterson, and by interesting I mean unfortunate.

Lawal spent most of his time battling with Jordan Hill's hair and came out on the losing side as those dreads had their way. Hill was simply stronger and quicker on both ends of the floor and pushed Gani around the paint. Lawal did have a couple of nice aggressive moves late in the game, but by that point Hill was on cruise control. Hill finished with 16 points on 7-of-10 shooting.

"I feel I did pretty good," Lawal said after the game in which he went 4-for-8 (14 points) and grabbed 5 rebounds. "It was the first game. Still have to work out some kinks. Just getting used to everything. I've got to work on my free throws and little things of the game, but I feel pretty good for my first time out."

The most impressive Summer Sun was clearly point guard Zabian Dowell. He's got a great presence on the floor and a smooth mid-range game and nice touch with his floater. Dowdell was in Phoenix last year working out before training camp when he went down with a strained groin. That kept him off the court until December when he played 10 games for Tulsa in the D-league before signing with a team in Spain.

If Zabian keeps playing like he did today, he has a good chance to find himself in Phoenix again this fall for camp. 16 points and 4 assists for him.

And then there was Earl...

Oh, Earl. You might think that his 4-for-14 performance was a result of the pressure he might be feeling coming into his second summer league with the expectation that he's going to contribute to the Suns this season.

"All I've got to do is play hard. Everybody knows my talent, knows I'm on the team. I'm just here trying to get better, but I've got nothing to prove," Clark said.

At least Earl understands what he's got to do better, "I think I did alright. I think I did some good things. I settled for a lot of jump shots today. I think I could have went to the basket more... tomorrow should be better."

Clark continues to struggle playing multiple positions. He says he still feels more comfortable playing the small forward, but is also playing a lot of power forward. He admits his post game is weak and defensively likes to match-up with small forwards. Learning plays for both positions is a goal of his here in Vegas, in addition to getting into basketball shape.

I would say that mental aspect of the game is still his biggest challenge. We'll see how he looks over the next few games, but so far, no bueno.

Taylor Griffin's biggest strength continues to be his effort. And strength. And hops. But as far as the ability to play the three at the NBA level... not so much. I will say he had a very impressive crossover move, so his handle might be better and he's let his hair grow out a bit which is having a kind of comb-over effect that's pretty decent.

Scottie Reynolds wasn't able to play due to an Achilles injury. It's uncertain whether he will play at all. Dwayne Collins continues to have the biggest hands I've ever seen, but he's not going to play here this week. He starts working out next week and hopes to come to Suns training camp ready to battle for a spot. It's a shame, it would have been fun to see Collins in this environment and certainly against bigger guys like Hill and Patterson who out-muscled Lawal.

the game was very close up until that 4th quarter, (which, coincidentally, was when I stopped watching.,lol)

Griffin had a nice all-around game, which was very surprising. Clark had an absolutely atrocious game; he looks scared to play the middle and settled for way too many jumpers, which is not very encouraging at all. To be fair though, Clark did look awfullly nervous and I suspect that “having to fill in amar’e’s shoes” played a lot in his mind. His arms looked thicker which was a good sign and he was pretty aggressive at the start; I expect Clark to get used to the spotlight and have a classic last game as he gets used to being in the spotlight and meshing with his teammates. Houston’s team had some very good chemistry as tthey were experienced and a lot of them had played with one another before, so I don’t think this is that big of a deal.

F*ck you Rob Sarver!

There was a sequence when I thought to myself -

“Matt Janning looks like an NBA player”. Then, on the defensive end, I said “Oh. Not so much.”

C'mon Earl

Drove me crazy watching him dribble then immediately pull up for a contested J. Good things happen when he aggressively drives to the basket.

"as [Patterson] over-powered Matt Janning"

Shouldn’t this happen anyway seeing as how Patterson is much bigger and outweighs Janning, who’s a SG, by 40lbs?

how well did Sideshow & Dragon play in their 1st SL games, last year ??

chillax..

If I remember correctly

Robin had a double double last year during SL
10+pts and 10fouls

But I see what you’re saying.

by sunfire0112 on Jul 9, 2010 8:07 PM MDT up reply actions

Rob had a bunch of bad games last year in SL, as did Goran..

I’m not worried at all about Earl.

All I want us to get out of this is for Gani & Collins figure out the level they need to play at to be in the NBA.. hint.. it’s a higher level than SL.

Goran did have a poor 1st game

and finished strong. Robin was the opposite. He killed in the first game and coasted.

We’ll see how Clark does although I am not encouraged to hear him still talking about learning plays.

I remember plenty of panic on this board, last year, too..

my recollection from this board was of some bad games from both of them.. so I guess I’ll make the same point: summer league really doesn’t mean much, except for those players who are d-leaguers, and otherwise not on rosters.

there are plenty of players who kill in SL, who have no chance of making the show, and vice versa.

Still, your point re: Earl is valid.. he should be more advanced than he is, and be more prepared to contribute.. not sure who to blame on that score, him or the coaching staff.

It’s easy to blame Earl, for some lack of work ethic, immaturity or something, but since he doesn’t know anything, the coaching staff should really be on his case, guiding him very closely, getting him to hit milestones of one sort or another.

no one is panicking

we are making fun of the panic…ha ha

as for Earl, we’ll see. Like I said (and like he said) his issue seems to be learning plays which is disappointing after spending the entire season on the bench…I think that’s got to be on him.

We’ll see. I would not be surprised if he does find a way to relax more and play with a bit more instinct and not worry so much about where he’s supposed to be on the court. But at some point, he’s going to have to learn to fit in both as a 3 and at the 4.

More than anything, that’s my worry w/ Earl.

How long have these guys been practicing together?

Two weeks tops? I can understand struggling with the plays when you’re playing in a glorified pick-up game.

It has to make it tough for guys like Earl who are trying to play within the system and practice what they’ve been learning when other guys are trying to stuff the stat sheet (which seemed like everybody besides Z tonight.)

Summer League is the perfect place to evaluate two things: hustle and flat out talent. Earl should still play better, but it’s reasonable that he’ll struggle here.

you know

I’m thinking Earl’s biggest problem is that he wishes he was smaller. I read a great article on him last year where he said he learned to play guard at 6’2" and loved it. Dribbling, shooting, defense, etc. Then all of a sudden, he grew to 6’9"-6’10" and his coaches wanted him to play in the post and he didn’t want to.

He still fancies himself a guard. So maybe he’s “forgetting” the plays at the 4 spot subconsciously, pining for the 2/3 position.

If this is true, he will eventually fade off into the sunset without ever getting good, or one day embrace the fact that he’s 6’10" 240 and accept that he’s a damn monster and play the 4. the LEAST likely is that he becomes a 6’10" shooting guard.

He should turn it into an advantage

There aren’t a lot of 4’s in the league that has the court vision and dribbling skills he possess. Still for me, the best way to make use of this is to slide him as 3 and try to up his minutes and maintain it even if he makes mistakes. Let’s say make him play for a consistent 10 to 15 minutes.

I think everyone else wants clark to be a 3 eventually

but right now he has to take whatever minutes he can get. and if those minutes come playing PF he has to realise that he needs to focus all his effort and ability into playing those minutes. There are a lot of ‘true’ 3s who play pf successfully: Rashard Lewis, lamar odom, shawn marion etc, so why can’t clark.

The Suns had better sign Zabioan Dowdell before some other team discovers him. A cheap replacement guard for Barbosa.

Uh, yeah

Clark has a whole lot to prove, seeing as how he was a lottery pick and has so far shown us something between “diddley” and “squat”.

by East Bay Ray on Jul 9, 2010 8:42 PM MDT up reply actions

I, uh, don’t think so.

by 8472species on Jul 9, 2010 8:43 PM MDT up reply actions

I noticed that, but didn’t bother to say it. I’m really not sure what to say about Clark. I hope he can succeed in the NBA, but I don’t have a good feeling about him. I have a better feeling about Lawal and Collins more than I do Clark.

I kinda cringed when i saw that too.

did I say cringe? i meant shudder.

How about proving that he deserves the minutes?

Looks like amar'e had a negative influence on his protege; very disturbing/dissappointing to hear him say that he has nothing to prove.

Someone needs to get him to focus, channel his attention on domination; something he never did in college despite having the tools to. I hope Clark wakes up before the season.

suns put clarks locker next to grant hill for a reason

but who knows if he was watching and listening. maybe Grant needs to be Earl’s constant escort…reminds me if babysitting a 3 year old or something.

in the meantime clark shouldnt be talking to the media

Dwayne Collins continues to have the biggest hands I’ve ever seen, but he’s not going to play here this week.

Huh. Well, that could be an upgrade over Lou.

Definitely, panic time :)

Wanted to come talk trash with you guys while this was going on, but I was scared of the banhammer. Not really :)

Had to play family tonight. Going to watch the game on DVR. Gotta see how Patterson looks since I am really hoping for good things from him.

Hey Spider...From what I seen, Patterson has some nice all around game...

He can probably play 3 or 4 depending on who’s out there…This was a nice pick-up…I had seen him a few times in college, but I was enamored with the 6’’’" man-child down there so I didn’t pay much attention to him…I think Houston got a potential starter here with Patrick Patterson…

STAT may be gone but the Suns will rise....!

by Daryl Ray on Jul 10, 2010 11:45 AM MDT up reply actions

He does look promising.

I watched the DVR. I am really hoping he is a diamond needing not much polish. I would love to keep the team as it is with a healthy Yao and see if we can do the Dream, one star contender thing or the Detroit team wins title model.

I am pretty sour on superstars these days. Steve Nash as the exception of course :)

I BELIEVE!!!

My best bet is Terrence Williams and Clark.
