Ex-Suns: Where are They Now? Casey Jacobsen Edition

Wuzzzup.  Here's a random meandering for you purple and orange summer site stalkers.

Let's play a little game if you're as bored as I am at work or as desperate as I am for Suns Basketball diggs - it's called Ex-Suns: Where are they Now?

Yhu_medium

Pick your favorite Ex-Sun and do some research.  In the comment section below let us all know Where they are now and why you chose the player you did.

I'll start it off.

Star-divide

I stumbled across this article about an hour ago that announced that former Phoenix Sun Casey Jacobsen is re-signing with his German team Brose Basket Bamburg in their BBL.

23jacobsen6x9_medium

Eutychus... who cares?

I know right?  Well I do.  Casey may not be a well remembered fan favorite for all - but he was definitely one of my favorites when the Suns drafted him back in 02'. I'm not saying he's my all-time favorite or anything crazy like that... He was in the news and it brought back some fond memories.  I have a tendency to root for the underdog - and that was Casey. His stats (as seen below) weren't/aren't eye popping, but his character is off the charts and he was a likable guy to root for - a Goran-like guy who you wanted to play well.

Yga_medium

So things didn't pan out very well for him in the NBA so Casey has been back forth between here and Europe but he still plays. Besides being the underdog dude - another reason I was a fan is because when he played for the Suns he lived in my neighborhood and we actually went to church together, so I got to talk to him every once in a while and that is always fun.   I'll never forget one Sunday when he was having one of his babies blessed in church -  I rolled into the parking lot and saw Mercedes after BMW after Cadillac on huge custom rims and sleek paint jobs, and when I walked into the building I saw nearly the entire Suns team on the back row there to support Casey on a big day for his family.  It was really cool.

Besides all that - Casey is probably one of the better basketball player bloggers I can think of - check out his work at SLAM online.

Here's an excerpt from a blog about gaurding MJ and LeBron - He's got good imagery and whatnot - but he did go to Stanford...

Yhi_medium

If you're still bored -  Here are some of his more memorable moments in the NBA

And just to see a little more what his personality is like check out this little feature he did with the Memphis Grizzlies.

Alright, enough man-love for a mediocre Ex-NBA player - it's your turn.   Light it up in the comment section.

Eutychus, you can't say your bored at work because some people may get offended...

But it is a great thought about former Suns…I could have sworn I seen Stephon Marbury under a Bridge off Mesa…or maybe he was the guy coming off the off-ramp…Dude, I don’t know how I get so confused these days…

He was there with what I assume was his wife and his mom.

He and his wife we’re oblivious to my awestruck look, but his mom noticed and was beaming with pride. I don’t think the two employees had any idea who he was.

I know he’s not the most thought of on BSotS nowadays, but at the time he was as loved as Nash.

The D'Antoni years aren't that far removed.

And while he may not have ever led us to the proverbial promised land, where Larry O’Brien trophies grow on trees and ESPN writers respect you, he still holds a place in my heart.

Those teams were some of the most fun I’ve had watching basketball in a long time.

I loved him

until my wife commented on how big and white his teeth were. From that day on, the honeymoon was over. She ruined it for me.

Does this Count...

I’m from NY and I met Q-rich right after the summer we traded him to the knicks for kurt thomas… I believe it was early october 2005. I was talking to him for a little bit …and said something along the lines of that he can come back to phoenix now since amare was going to miss the entire season or something like that. he just chuckled it off and then gave me an autograph for my friend who wasn’t there but was a knicks fan. then we did that head thump thing that he always used to do and said bye. I was like 24 back then…also around that same time maybe a little later I met/saw the entire knicks squad which included former sun marbury and future sun frye was there but the only one I talked to was Renaldo Balkman and Isaiah thomas, Herb Williams…wierd huh

note that was at some knicks fan day I was valeting…yeah I know right I didn’t know the Knicks had fans lol

Sure - he's an ex-Sun

Good times – I met Shawn Marion back in the day when I worked at Discount Tire on Camelback and 18th St. He was nice… but he didn’t even tip me. I know – I just fixed his flat tire and the service was free… but still, at the time he had some huge-A 20" low profile Giovanni’s on his Mercedes SL and those things are some of the harder tires/rims to deal with. I’m not bitter…

I do remember that when I got in to drive the thing my feet barely could reach the pedals – he had ‘Trix" embroidered into everything and there were some sweet self-help/motivational cd’s in the door compartment.

I've heard whispers that Amare and JRich

Used to go to Lolo’s on Central around 1 or 2am on Friday nights. Rumor had it that JRich would always leave a huge tip and Amare would leave a pretty terrible one. Doesn’t make sense, as Amare seems like one of those guys who would tip very well, but hey, s’what I’ve heard.

He worked at the Finish Line store at Metrocenter before he married my sister, and said some vague thing about Marbury being unpleasant. I’d have to ask him about it to know exactly what the problem was.

and you are too lazy to do the research – go ahead and post the name and I’ll see if I can scrounge something up.

How about Haratio Llamas...

I’m not sure if I spelled his name right but he was just a bench warmer back in like 98. I just liked hearing the name, that’s the only reason I even remember him. I don’t think he played much if ever. Have fun with this one.

by NSU Stud on Aug 10, 2010 4:07 PM MDT up reply actions

He's been playing for the Suns...

or should I say Los Soles de Mexicali!

Horacio’s been all over the Mexican Latin ball league – his recent stats are here.

He actually just signed this year with Los Pioneros de Quintana Roo (the Official Team of Cancun) and is very focused on winning a championship in their league according to this article.

I also found this blog written a couple of years back that expresses some disappointment In Llamas for his lack of conditioning – sounds kind of like a Sheldon Williams situation with him trying to stay in shape and whatnot – though more recently he looks pretty trimmed down and his stats have improved a lot, so maybe he’s found some new motivation or something.

So though he only played 28 games in the NBA and averaged something like 3 minutes a game… He’ll forever be a legend because he was the first Mexican NBA player and He’s doing pretty well for himself playing basketball in his homeland.

Dang -

I didn’t realize how many different Teams O-MILL has played for since the Suns… Check out his Wiki page – he’s played for 17 different teams in various leagues (including a stint with the Globetrotters) and get this, he’s still playing.

He’s on the roster and winning PBL championships with the Lawton Fort Sill Cavalry of Oklahoma… I read here that during one of this past season’s championship games,

Oliver Miller [was] ejected and suspended for the remainer of the series for entering the stands to confront the fans.

HAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!!!!! Now I can’t confirm this because I can’t find any other sources… but if it’s true it’s hilarious. So good old Big O is still alive and kickin’ and throwing it down on court and apparently in the stands.

Tom Chambers was standing behind me

at Sky Harbor security line. He looked like a giant homeless guy – grungy look with a backward had and beard – but he had NBA socks on (comfort beyond belief) and a nice watch. So, in my starstruck stupor, I asked him if he was indeed TC. He said ‘Yep’ with a nod. Then I quickly followed with “AretheuhhSunsgonnamaketheplayoffswithoutAmare?” He kinda looked like he expected a Suns question, so he said “Yea, they’re still good enough to beat anybody” with a dry smile. I nodded and threw a small fist pump, and then turned to see I was next to have my boarding pass checked.
Oh, as for the “Where Are They Now?” portion… Tom Chambers has a little gig with the Suns.

by ajotanelsona on Aug 10, 2010 4:13 PM MDT reply actions

yeah I see him at Suns games all the time

he has seats right behind the backboard at the end of court by the Suns bench. I’m a section over, 12 rows up.

He always looks grungy. I know what you mean about homeless-looking. Even in a suit, he does.

Ok, how about this story

My wife and I are eating at the Pancake House in Scottsdale one morning, a couple yrs ago.

I look up and notice Dan Majerle sitting in a booth with his kids across from him. I point him out to my wife, who of course doesn’t recognize him. She says, and I quote, “The only player I’d probably recognize is Michael Jordan.”

I roll my eyes. We watch Suns games all the time, and she wouldn’t recognize anyone but Michael Jordan. Whatever.

At that moment, she looks over my shoulder, chuckles, points and says, “See. There he is.”

I ignore her, but she doesn’t stop tracking the person across the room. So I finally have to turn around and look and, holy shit. Its him! It’s really fuckin him.

Fuckin wife.

Here's an obscure one:

Alvin Sims.
Played four games with the Suns in ‘99 as an emergency backup to Kidd. He was notable to me because he played in a game the same day he was signed and he didn’t even have his name on the back of his jersey. Just a blank spot where the name should have been and his number. I hadn’t seen that before or since, and I guess that’s about as obscure as you can get.
Played college at Louisville, I couldn’t find any info on what he’s done since his nameless appearance with the Suns.

Perhaps it was the same reason why JR Redick didn’t get much playing time his first few seasons? Just a shooter who was too slow to defend other SG’s. Eventually, as you know, Redick developed into a decent defender and can now hold his own against other guards.

These chance encounters with NBA players that several people mention are another reason I would never want to be an NBA player, not even a marginal one. I hate getting attention from strangers, and would be extremely uncomfortable if someone stared or pointed at me in a restaurant, airport, tire store, or what-have-you.
