Suns Future Is Bleak - ESPN Tells Us The Way It Is
I generally like going into a season with the knowledge that the Suns are underestimated.
We all know about lame summer articles on the dormant NBA, but this is getting ridiculous. And I'm even a fan of numbers, and using them to help predict the future.
But what I don't like is when a writer, in this case Chad Ford of ESPN (with the help of John Hollinger), come up with these crystal-ball-on-steroids predictions of gloom and doom for teams' futures.
This work screams of desperation. And it's filled with total crap.
The writers, reportedly, are predicting the on-the-court success of all 30 NBA franchises, starting 1 year from today, for 3 years after that.
Somehow, they've ranked the Suns 27th overall. They are saying that, starting a year from now, the Suns will perennially be drafting in the top 5 of the lottery.
27. Phoenix Suns | Future Power Rating: 399
The enthusiasm over the Suns' terrific run to the Western Conference finals was seriously dampened by a pretty crappy June and July.
When team president and GM Steve Kerr resigned, owner Robert Sarver took over front-office operations and managed to do a great deal of damage in just a few weeks.
First he lost Amare Stoudemire in free agency, and then he took on Hedo Turkoglu's huge contract while also overpaying Josh Childress (who plays the same position as Turkoglu), Channing Frye and Hakim Warrick. Sarver eventually brought on respected player agent Lon Babby as the team's new president, but at that point, most of the damage had been done.
Sarver's moves will help keep the Suns respectable for the moment, but for the future, the picture is bleak. As Steve Nash ages, it's hard to imagine how the role players Phoenix has put around him will be able to prevent a Suns slide into irrelevance.
(Previous rank: 25)
I can see them ranking the Suns' management team low, due to the turnover. But 23rd? Really? This is the Suns, with the 3rd best winning percentage in the ENTIRE ASSOCIATION for the past 6 years since Sarver became owner. Does that not count?
And somehow, there are 23 teams with a better roster than the Suns going into next summer (sans Richardson and Hill, and with everyone else a year older)? Really? On what basis are the Suns suddenly a lottery team?
Of course, if you look at the note in parenthesis at the bottom of the section, you see this:
(Previous rank: 25)
Given the one-year-ahead nature of this prediction, this means a year ago they expected THIS UPCOMING SEASON'S team to be worse than all but 5 other teams in the league.
Can you see our current team, heading into the 2010-2011 season, winning only 20 or so games? Neither can I.
If they were so wrong a year ago, how can they make the same mistake again?
What do we make of this numbers game, when we put it all into context of REAL LIFE?
Is it rocket science, or a smoky cauldron of cooked pigeon droppings?
I can't wait till Sarver, Babby, Nash and Hill lead this team deep in the playoffs again, and every year for the next 4 years. And by doing so, rub this prediction in the faces of those pencil-necked geeks at ESPN.
How do I know this will happen? Because the Suns have done it for the past six years, despite the turnover and changes. The Suns have the 3rd best winning percentage in the league for the past 6 seasons, and been to 3 Western Conference Finals in that time.
How many other teams can say that? Certainly not 24 of them. More like a single handful.

how many times the suns will be covered by national TV ths season?
hmmmmmm… fewer than last year? fuckkkkkkkkkkk
NYK VS PHX
Hopeully it will look like this.
NYK VS PHX it will be on TNT or ESPN. 2 games.
LA VS PHX, 2 to 3 games on National TV
what else?
PHX vs RAPTORS?
SUNS VS CELTS, MAGIC?
hmmm..
hopefully NYK @ PHX on XMAS day…
well there's still
national TV-worthy games against the Mavs, Spurs, Blazers, Warriors (always high scoring), Rockets, OKC, etc. All the West playoff teams.
Plus a game against Miami (everyone will get one, at least, on national TV), and prob Orlando (Turks old team), Atlanta (Childress’ old team), memphis (warrick’s old team), and prob even Boston.
Suns still get viewers thanks to Nash
in addition to what you already mentioned – Knicks, LA

Don't forget....
They often play Phoenix vs Golden State games fairly often on TNT and ESPN. If you don’t like seeing two teams score a combined 250 points or more then you shouldn’t be watching basketball.
That’ why I really wanted a Orlando/Phoenix finals…That would just be plain entertaining. Maybe I’m not a “basketball purist” but those defensive match ups where at half time each time is barely at 40 just bore the hell out of me. There is no brand of Basketball more entertaining than the Phoenix Suns. Well, The JailBlazers…but for other reasons.

Dude relax, quit being a SCATTERPANTS! This team will be fine! Hedo will be a great fit for this team, a guy who can take the ball to the rack who has an AWESOME shot. He can make the big shot at the end of a game and has great passing skills. Hedo can lead a fast break and run the floor with the best of them and he can play some “D”. His rebounding should also improve too with the fast tempoed Suns. Check him out on youtube. Don’t worry about his numbers from last year on a crappy team look at his numbers on the Magic an uptemp team. Put this guy on the floor with Nash and this guy will be DYNAMITE. Childress is going to be a lot like Marion a slasher who can run up and down the floor on fastbreaks and can pick up the garbage in and around the hoop. Once again, his numbers will improve with Nash. Dude, Dragic is only going to get better and HE CAN PLAY “D”. For that manner, the entire bench improved (which was already the best in the NBA) with Childress and Warrick joining Dudley, Dragic, and Frye. The starters will be well rested for the 4th quarter. This team should win around 50 games and will make it to the 2nd round possibly the WCF again.

Josh Childress (who plays the same position as Turkoglu), Channing Frye and Hakim Warrick.
I can understand this, but do they not realize that the Suns have played undersized for years? Do they not realize that Josh’s natural position is actually the 2 which he will play? Do they not realize that Frye plays the Center? Do they not realize that Warrick has always played PF? The only thing they got right is Turk.
Well, will just have to prove them wrong and if they’re right we’re still in a pretty darn good position because we can easily fix it. We have plenty of pieces, a trade exception, expiring contract which we could use to make the necessary move to make us better. That’s just talking about this season though. A few years from now we will have Dragic, Dudley, Lopez, Josh, Frye and hopefully a good PF.
Don't trade Dudley!
"and hopefully a good PF."
Hakim Warrick would like to have a word with you…
Don't any of those idiots at ESPN realize that Childress is originally an SG?
He just played SF because Atlanta had JJ at SG. Seriously, ESPN pays these guys? I guess we’re all not qualified since we actually know something about basketball.
Steve Nash is my mancrush. But Goran Dragic is the 2nd coming of Manu Ginobili, which makes him just as tasty.
Lebron James could play the two or the four if the coach asked him.
I guess Riley signing him to a team with Wade and Bosh already on it was also a bad idea.
I'd like to see miami play something like 2 centers, bosh at SG, dwade and lebron at SG/PG,
or vice versa. wade and lebron can both handle the ball, lebron can facilitate, wade can guard any 1-2, lebron 1-3, bosh 3-4. I’ll bet they could pull it off
Couldn't Agree with you more
You are so right! Couldn’t have said it better myself. They have quite a good group of young guys who are only going to get better. How can ESPN overlook the future outlooks of Goran, Dudley, and Lopez. Let’s not forget about the emergence of J Rich.

Tempered expectations...
I’m a big Suns fan, but I also tend to temper my expectations quite a bit. However, I agree whole heartedly with Alex on this one. To put the 4th best franchise in NBA history at the bottom of the this list is to ignore a pattern of success that has followed decades. While the Suns have yet to win an NBA Championship, they are perennially one of the better teams in the league because good players want to play here. The reason Minnesota, Memphis, Cleveland, Charlotte, and New Orleans stink on a general level is because they have to fight to get decent players there. Phoenix is a desirable destination. (see Hedo waiving is trade bonus, Childress taking less money to play here, Warrick commenting on playing in Phoenix). This is a “my bad” on the part of Chad Ford and Hollinger. An anomaly in the statistical analysis.

Let me emphasise one of your points -
Players come to Phx and PLAY. Since I’ve been watching the Suns (granted, not nearly as long as most of you) there’s only been one true bust – Marcus Banks. There are plenty of good things to say about Shaq and Diaw, even though they didn’t lead us to the promised land, and no, Scott, Taylor Griffin doesn’t count.
Gentry is one of the top coaches in the league, and he’s the best coach for this team. He’s going to love this assessment – how low pressure can you get? It will motivate him, and motivate this team. Everyone on this team has something to prove – now they have a little more.
I have no idea what else ESPN has to say – I won’t pay for that crap. I guess, like Cowherd, that they figure it’s better to be controversial than right.

How can you say that the Suns will be one of the worst on-the-court teams in the NBA when they lead the league in NOT being that? When they lead the consistent playoff seasons?
Blogging Suns Basketball at Bright Side of the Sun
Those silly stat geeks...
Have you guys ever heard Chad Ford or John Hollinger in interviews? The only thing they can spit off are PER, win shares, plus-minus, and salaries. They fail to realize the effect that Nash can have on any warm-body in the league (Tim Thomas, James Jones, etc). Guys like Hedo, Childress, and Warrick are able to maximize their potential with Nash. I expect some young guys to contribute way more than these ESPN talking heads can anticipate.
When I think of Hollinger I think of this:

Well if they were to use historical evidence

ESPN3.com is the shizzle
Other then that there is nothing that ESPN offers that isn’t vastly surpassed by other more specific sports web sites. Oh yeah, that 30for30 series is sweet too, but it took 30 years for them to get to that point.
Predictions, opinions, humor, insight, fantasy games, breaking news … ESPN is waaay behind the curve. So behind in fact that they are getting sucked into the tabloid side of journalism just to compete.
The other point I want to bring up is that journalists are never held accountable for their predictions. It is just a cheap way to get mouse clicks.
ESPN=BSPN
This always happens...
No matter how good the Suns are or could be, ESPN and the rest of the sports world will always look down on us. It’s a sad shame that we always have to work to prove ourselves. We have one of the highest winning percentages as an organization in league history even though we don’t have a championship to show for it. The media just looks at our high scoring, lack of defense, and dry facts and puts it down. I don’t listen to them at all because the Suns have been able to surpass expecations almost every year in recent history. Suns fans should not be dismayed by the people who don’t even watch our team’s every game analyze every single move by our organization. We know them better and we believe in our team through thick and thin.
We overpaid Warrick and Childress?
With their talent and skills, I’d say we got those 2 guys at a steal. I think we overpaid Frye a bit but the other 2 guys were steals. ESPN really blows. I guess they’d rather be rewatching the Decision instead of doing actual research on the Suns.
Steve Nash is my mancrush. But Goran Dragic is the 2nd coming of Manu Ginobili, which makes him just as tasty.
Of course we did.
And I’m sure Miami took up the top 15 positions on the list, anyway. Amar’e on the DL is worth more than Warrick, Dragic is a fluke, Childress was playing in Europe (isn’t FRANCE in Europe?), Grant and Nash are old – they’ll need walkers this year. And Turk – oh, my, he couldn’t even lead Toronto to the promised land.
I hope this pisses Nash off – I like when he’s mad.

If the Suns. . . .
re-sign Dudley & Dragic and exercise their option on Earl Clark and keep their next 2 draft picks (none of which are sure things but play along here), the Suns will have roughly $50M committed in 2012-13 to the following 10 players: Turkoglu, Childress, Frye, Warrick, Dudley, Dragic, Clark, Lopez, mid-teens draft pick #1 & mid-teens draft pick #2.
If they re-sign Lopez & keep thier 2013 pick & counting Turkoglu’s give-back, they will still have roughly $50M committed to those 10 plus the 2013 pick.

Blogging Suns Basketball at Bright Side of the Sun
If ESPN's aiming for the Suns to be in the bottom tier of the league
why not go farther than that and say they’ll make a push for the worst record ever in the NBA? If our team’s gonna suck that bad, they might as well suck with style.

I like our future with Goran Dragic and Robin Lopez alone. Not really worried. Even if we did suck for a few years sometimes that’s what it takes to get a couple good draft picks several years in a row. Then your future gets much brighter.
Either way we do much better as the under dog.

What do they say about the Knicks and Stoudemire?
They are saying we “lost him”, when we actually made a calculation (a smart one, I think) not to pay him max guaranteed for 5 years like the Knicks did. Do they ding the Knicks for overpaying him? They should, because the Knicks did.
I bet that...
they say that the Knicks will be a playoff contender just with addition of Stat alone.
So like last time amare signed a contract, he was gone for a year with a sudden case of microfracturedness
in his knee. And he didn’t start playing $100m worth of basketball until that contract was basically over. Then he proceeded to get dominated by lamar odom. Haha knicks, haha.
Amare, we loved you when you tried, and those couple of times you blocked shots and the end of games, and were very optomistic. Gonna miss ya.
we should all try to go to a game together and get some tickets in the same section

To be fair...
They last did the rankings in February or March, I believe.
But someone with insider please dig up how they ranked us during the last offseason?
Stay frosty my friends!!
I love ESPN
And I think Hollinger is a genius. Most of the work they put out is great.
But this, I don’t understand it. How can you predict the future? I don’t know where to start with this.
Let’s assume Sarver has made a mess of the front office as they depict, let’s assume the Hedo deal is terrible, and let’s assume Nash is as finished as they claim (and he will be in two seasons I think). The Suns still have the up and coming Dragic, and a bunch of useful young players and useful trade chips (the contracts incoming this year so far) to play with.
Don’t the Suns have the 4th highest winning percentage in the entire NBA over history? Aren’t they almost never a lottery team because they rebuild and retool along the way? Didn’t Sarver say, when introducing Lon Babby, that this is the way he envisions to run the franchise (i.e. like the Colangelos did)? And yet ESPN wants to ignore all that, all logic, and simply say the Suns are doomed based on their opinions on the roster the Suns have and will have (to an extent) a year or 3 down the line.
It’s just stupid.
One more thing
Doesn’t the fact they keep adjusting it defeat the entire purpose of it?
“Yeah, so we think this team will be here in a year’s time….but in three months we might change our minds about where that team will be in a year’s time.”
Such a pointless exercise.

Didn’t Sarver say, when introducing Lon Babby, that this is the way he envisions to run the franchise (i.e. like the Colangelos did)?
if that’s the case, why not a) keep them around b) take their advice when they were and pay joe johnson, thereby improving on “the 4th highest winning percentage in the entire NBA over history”, and finally win that elusive championship for them.
it was all there.

Um, right...
Because Joe Johnson equals championships.

ESPN
for awhile now has become a channel I turn away from. The E-60 and Outside the lines are decent, but other than that it has become “Not watch TV”.
Screw them. The Suns should be fine. Turk is the key to this team. If he adjusts, plays hard, and doesn’t bitch, this team will make a deep run into the playoffs.
Note to self
“i hate john hollinger and all of ESPN” ….DONE.
I think Gentry wrote that article just to pump his team up.
i love articles like this because it serves two purposes.
1. it makes espn, yahoo look like the ignorent asses they are
2. doesnt over hype the suns so they come out cockey.
they do come out cockey because they know the truth that we know and it has set us free from all this mass media bullshit.
bartender, another shot please.
wait..back up, what the F* is a "chris duhon"?
and another thing
is amar’e going to change his name when he realizes in hebrew there are no commas or other pronounciation marks???
He is going to have to revert back to just plain old Amare.
wait..back up, what the F* is a "chris duhon"?
All the vowels in Hebrew are diacritical marks
So he’ll now have 3 of them instead of just 1.
And yes, tattoos are forbidden by the Torah. Even cool Star of David tattoos.
Actually that is wrong...
Hebrew itself doesn’t have apostrophes but English transliterations of Hebrew words do. So technically, his name is fine.
Reading is good...
What a joke
ESPN is lacking a clue here.
STAT wasn’t “lost”, we decided that we couldn’t put all the money on one player and fail when (inevitably) he had a bad day. We still like STAT, and I think that adding J-Chil, Turk, Warrick, and a TRUE Center (yet to come) with the same money is a brilliant steal—
The Suns have replaced everything that STAT gave us, and The SUNS have things we didn’t have last year. It’s gooood that we have Lawal now. We should sign Dwanye Collins next.
One last thing: Poor STAT is going to be double teamed so much, and he won’t have enough help in NYK. STAT will find it frustrating in NY, but I wish him the best.
I do feel a little sorry STAT
even though he’s laying in the bed that he made.
Damn Knicks made it glow and distract him from the Suns’ comfy bed.

It is a stupid comment, but
The jury is out on the new suns .
Can Nash play at this level for another year, and another year, and another year?
Can Tuk play like his old self?
Will Dragic keep getting better?
Will Lopez stay healthy?
Will Grant stay healthy?
Can all the new players play together?
These kinds of questions can only be answered real time, not ESPN time. When we see this team pull together.
True
You could throw these same types of questions at every team in the NBA… So why do the Suns always get the short end of the stick??
Because when we are really good, like last year, it's a built in story.
It’s done in all sports, and in politics, too. It’s much more fun to talk about the Suns, NOT EVEN PICKED TO MAKE THE PLAYOFFS, and here they are in the WCF!
Don’t worry about it – it’s more fun this way, anyway. With these guys’ track records, believe me, the worst thing that could happen is if these yo-yo’s pick us.

Yeah, it never ceases to amaze me how we always get counted out year after year. I never understand it, and it makes me laugh.
I just remember after we made the playoffs that like you said, we were not supposed to make, every game the commentator were like “the suns have no chance, blah blah.” all the way to the end.
I am mostly angry at the type of ranking this is
they take the all-time 4th highest winning percentage team (and since Sarver came in its gone up to 3rd overall) and predict them in the bottom 4 of the league over the next 4 years. Something is wrong with the “model” when that happens.

why is ESPN "desperate"?
Mr. Laugan, you say ESPN’s article smacks of “desperation.” I agree that it’s nonsense, but how does it show desperation, and why is ESPN desperate? Is ESPN failing or losing everyone’s respect (possibly because it won’t stop being LeBron James’s lickspittle)?
Probably lack of material to write.
Since there’s no LeBron or Kobe news, what better stuff for them to write about than how bad the Suns will be?
Steve Nash is my mancrush. But Goran Dragic is the 2nd coming of Manu Ginobili, which makes him just as tasty.
oh please don't call me Mr Laugan
good god, I’m not my father. Alex please.
I’m just guessing the NBA pages are losing a little traffic during the summer, so these two guys decide to put together some really elaborate thingy to prove how smart they are… and they forget to vett it with realism. How do you rank Cleveland at 28th overall when they’ve been successful with LeBron and before him, and they have an owner willing to spend. And how do you rank Phoenix as low as they did? it just doesn’t make sense.
Blogging Suns Basketball at Bright Side of the Sun
Suns won't get very many national games this year I think,
before their most exciting player according to national fans was probably Stoudemire, not Nash. They’ll say Nash is old, who cares. But yeah ABC is usually 2 games each sunday plus christmas and thanksgiving. TNT 2 games each thursday. I don’t care when the Suns are on espn, i can’t stand listening to their commentators at ALL. ESPN, for whatever reason, just plain hates the Suns. I always watch the games on FSN instead.
I think, just maybe, Nash and his style of play
gets a few viewers. I’m guessing 25 national games. Last year was supposed to be an even worse season, and Amare wasn’t supposed to be able to come back from the eye thing, and the Suns had set.

Definitely sounds like something Kenny Smith would say.
Kenny Smith invented it. Tom Leander simply played it out by repeating it 40x per broadcast. That is definitely why I thought he invented it.
Al McCoy says “Nash Rambler” on the radio over and over. I doubt he invented it, but he might as well have.

ABC usually starts on Christmas and then Sundays after.
But I seriously despise ESPN. The postgame coverage and the halftime show. Jon Barry, Michael Wilbon, and Stuart Scott? Please. TNT’s much better overall. I seriously want EJ, Kenny, and Charles for every national game. Plenty of entertainment and they actually talk about other teams besides the Lakers and Celtics, which has now been replaced by the Lakers and the Heat.
I don’t mind Kenny looking down on the Suns because Charles’ favoritism for the Suns cancels it out. ESPN is all negative towards the Suns except for their courtside announcers.
Steve Nash is my mancrush. But Goran Dragic is the 2nd coming of Manu Ginobili, which makes him just as tasty.
Even their courtside announcers give some Suns hate.
Jon Barry is the worst. The Suns were up by 18 in a game against the Rockets (I think) and he was still, even with maybe 4 minutes remaining, saying that he wouldn’t be surprised if the Suns fell apart and lost the game.
Then there’s Jeff Van Gundy. I’m not sure if I hate how little he actually says when he talks or if I think he’s hilarious for being so idiotic.
All in all, ESPN is full of winners. As we have been reminded of with this article.

the espn announcers are the worst part imo,
they’re honestly the ones i can’t stand the most. when they’re not telling the play by play everything they say is idiotic, and then espn goes off on some random tangent while jrich is swiching a fastbreak 3 or dunking it. but yes, more chuck is always good. the world needs more chuck. i think he can be pretty fair both ways regarding how good the suns are, he’s very realistic when he talks about them.
In the history of the Phoenix Suns how many times have we drafted in the top five?
We’ve been around 42 years. Just off the top of my head I can’t imagine us drafting that high more than maybe five or six times.
Also, why are so many analysts bashing on our signings this past year? I mean, we really didn’t overpay anyone. I mean, sure we might of overpaid Channing a little but I’m sure there was a team out there looking to pay him just as much if not more.
Thirdly, why are they not taking into account how good of shape we are heading into the next CBA? I could see maybe ONE Top five draft pick in the next handful of years, not every year.
I’m just so damn confused, everyone says Amare is a huge risk and was grossly over paid and isn’t a superstar. So what happens? lose him and all of a sudden we’re not even a playoff team next year. Can anyone think of a analyst out there who isn’t a total Sun hater? Marc Stein maybe?

Post 2010 all star break (finally), Charles Barkley.
Though in Chuck’s defense, all he ever wanted was for the Suns to play defense. Once he saw that, he was right on board.
He use to give us a whole lot of crap before that though while Kenny was sticking up for us back in the SSOL era. The first year of that era, Barkley wasn’t too bad saying, “Well lets just wait and see”. After the first two years he started giving us a lot of crap until last season when we started playing defense and toughened up. Now Kenny is the one talking smack about us and making up all these lies, " their bench isn’t that good, their defense is worse, they won’t beat the Blazers, nor the Spurs".
Don't trade Dudley!
27th overall, then we will have a good pick next year
If these wise and experienced people see it like that … then we will have a promising draft next year. I am watching PHX since the early nineties and I feel, that we have finally have some tougher guys with the new forwards ( I would like to have Mr. Irrelevant as well). I really like Amare, but honestly we can live without him. Phoenix is (was) great because of great chemistry and intelligent basketball and not because of a one man show. Turk is a a player with high level of bball IQ, there is a good chance to have a great team.
hang on
It’s always been Nash’s team. Don’t they remember the year Amar’e was injured or when Jason Terry said “We should score on these guys”. Amar’e sat the entire 4th and the Suns came screaming home to win. The more garbage they write the more fuel to our fire. I’d love to know what teams trail us.
further adding to the hilarity
apparently, the Knicks are ranked 11th overall for the next 4 years, with their roster ranked 15th (compared to the Suns’ 27th and 24th respectively).
Ridiculous
11. New York Knicks | Future Power Rating: 523
PLAYERS MANAGEMENT MONEY MARKET DRAFT
200 (15th) 97 (15th) 140 (4th) 77 (3rd) 9 (29th)
The Knicks didn’t hit the home run they were hoping for this summer in free agency, but they still significantly improved their roster. In fact, the Knicks moved up a whopping 12 spots in our player ratings, the most of any team this summer. Of course, the fact that they ranked 27th out of 30 in March puts the major move forward into perspective.
Last season, the Knicks didn’t have a lot going for them as they tried to keep the payroll lean in an attempt to lure two superstars to New York. The addition of Amare Stoudemire, Anthony Randolph, Raymond Felton and Ronny Turiaf to holdover Knicks Danilo Gallinari, Wilson Chandler, Toney Douglas and Bill Walker should make a significant impact in the win column.
But the summer rebuilding effort wasn’t enough to propel the Knicks into the overall top 10 in our future rankings. Knicks fans might have been hoping for more after years of waiting, but ranking fourth in the East (11th overall) means that fans should eventually get to see their team win a playoff series for the first time since 2000.
The good news for the Knicks is that the team will retain some cap flexibility in the future. Once Eddy Curry comes off the books next summer, the Knicks should have enough money to make another significant addition (assuming the new CBA allows it) or could use Curry’s expiring contract as a trading chip at the deadline.
The bad news for the Knicks is that they paid a high price to get Amare and Co. this summer. The team lost All-Star forward David Lee in the Anthony Randolph swap and traded 2009 lottery pick Jordan Hill in February to create cap space (as part of the Tracy McGrady deal). The Rockets now have the right to swap picks with the Knicks in 2011 and own the Knicks’ 2012 first-round pick as well (though it’s top-five protected). That has pushed the Knicks to No. 29 in our draft category.
(Previous rank: 16)

“Add Amare Stoudemire, Anthony Randolph, Raymond Felton and Ronny Turiaf to holdover Knicks Danilo Gallinari, Wilson Chandler, Toney Douglas and Bill Walker”

Losing Duhon for Felton is an upgrade. Losing Lee for Amar’e is an upgrade, but not by much. Losing Harrington for Randolph and Turiaf isn’t an upgrade, but not a downgrade either. Overall, I think the Knicks have improved, but just a little(add 5 more wins). However, if Danilo Gallinari can continue to improve than the Knicks won’t be so bad(add 5 more wins). He’s a similar player to Joe Johnson. I think they will win 35-40(This is the Eastern Conference were talking about) games next season barley making the playoffs as the 8th seed and than getting swept by the Heat.
They’re not better than the Suns, that’s for sure. I still think our team has the potential to remain a contender barring any major injuries and assuming Turk can fit in with the team and step up his rebounding.

I'd say losing Harrington is addition by subtraction

But, the good news is that it doesn't matter
I’m thinking along the lines of “stick and stones may break my bones…..”, “talk is cheap”, that kind of thing. (Although, since this column was an ESPN Insider exclusive, it managed to be both cheap and overpriced at the same time, and that’s not easy.) This isn’t college football. It doesn’t matter where “experts” rank us, we’ll settle it on the court. I actually don’t even think Suns players will use this as any kind of motivation because I bet they simply don’t care.

Oh wait - Did you say Chad Ford?
I stopped listening after that.
They say "don't swim with the sharks", but I'm faster than sharks so it's not a big deal...
Couldn’t agree with you more, but it’s nothing new. They (the talking head writers) aways seem to downgrade the Suns. Sure, this summer didn’t start off very good losing their GM (which they are still looking far and Amare, but the Suns did pick up Turk and Childress. Turk will give them another “GOTO GUY” with hitting big time shots which will take a little pressure off of Nash. He can create his own shot which is dynamite, and take the ball to the hoop. Turk has GREAT passing skills and can kick it out to the open man and he can play “D”. Childress will give them a lot of stuff that Marion gave them a slasher to the hoop garbage man and a guy who can run the fastbreak. Lets not forget the young talents of Dudley, Frye and Dragic whom will be part of the GREATEST Bench in the NBA. The starters will be well rested in the 4th quarter of most games.
Sure, this team will miss the inside presence of Amare, but Turk will allow this team to spread the floor which will allow him and Nash to take it to the hoop. I think this team will win around 50 and get to the 2nd round if not the WCF if Richardson can step it up and become the third star on this team. So go ahead and count us out again.

and he can play "D"
That’s a bit of a stretch. From what I’ve heard is that Turk’s defense is decent against other SF’s, but poor against PF’s. I’m not sure why that is, he seems big enough to be a good defender against other PF’s?
The biggest beef I have with him is his rebounding. He needs to by into the “gang rebound” mentality to earn my admiration. I expect him to have a career high in rebounding. Hopefully, he can give us anywhere from 6-8rpg. 6 is possible, but 8 is kind of a stretch as well. Although, he does have the potential to do that.
Don't trade Dudley!
5-6 is possible, 8 is a stretch
if either Frye OR Turk get 7+ rebounds a game, the Suns are fortunate. They need to rely on gang rebounding, since the wing men get more than their normal share. hopefull it all evens out.
I just hope Turk plays HIS game as well as he can, while meshing with the Suns’ game. if they don’t mesh, then there’s trouble. Rebounding is a separate issue, IMO.
Blogging Suns Basketball at Bright Side of the Sun
Boards are a concern but Turk and Childress will mesh just fine
Yeah, rebounding will definitely be a concern for this team without a dominate center or PF. Lopez and Turk will have to step it up. Turk will need to grab 6-7 boards and Lopez 7-8 boards a game. If we can come within 5 rebounds during a game, our high shooting percentage should be enough to overcome this like during the 05-06 season.
I don’t think we have to worry about meshing with the passing abilities of Nash and the run-and-gun style Turk and Childress will have no problems fitting in.
Gilbert Sportsfan
by Gilbertsportsfan on Aug 4, 2010 5:42 PM MDT up reply actions
Turk's D and rebounding
Turk has primarily defended SF’s, I can’t remember him ever defending a PF so I can’t really comment on this. I did watch him get an INCREDIBLE block from behind of Kobe during the Finals in ‘09 (look up on youtube). So, this will be something to watch on whether he is able to make this defensive transition to guarding PF’s. I do know that Turk has a very high basketball IQ and should be able to defend the 2 man game unlike Amare. As far as boards, he’s 6’10, and should grab more with the uptempo style of the Suns. He averaged 5-6 rebounds a game with the uptempo style of the Magic a couple years ago. Lopez does a good job of boxing out, this should help Turk with grabbing boards being that he will be guarding PF’s and closer to the rim. So, I don’t think it’s a stretch to think he can get 6-7 boards a game.
This will be a very similar type ball club we had in 05-06 when we ran the ball and spread the floor. The chemistry with Nash was phenomenal and we got to the WCF. We now have another goto guy and a GREAT bench to keep our starters fresh for the 4th quarter. If we can stay within 5 rebounds against our opponent our shooting percentage should help us win most games. I don’t think it’s a stretch to think this team could make it to and past the 2nd round because I think this team will have Great Chemistry. To beat the Lakers though we will need a big in the front court.

The suns arent even mentioned in passing as a team that could beat the lakers, even though they got so close this year…
The Suns over achieved massively last year
Who’s to say that can’t do it again? Sure, the roster doesn’t look better….but IMO it didn’t look better from 08-09 to 09-10, yet there was marked improvement. Who knows, maybe the Suns will “do more with less” again this year and bring in some playoff revenue again before bowing out. I guess they just have to hope to have the injury fairy on their side again if they are aiming for a long post season run.
Okay, it was a pretty bad prediction
My guess is that a lot of that is predicated on the team falling apart once Nash is done (not that I agree b/c of Dragic 23). But Hollinger is also the only one who predicted the Suns to win it all once the playoffs started and he also predicted the Suns to beat the Lakers in 6.
