How important is Steve Nash to you?

Recently Wil Cantrell asked if you would, hypothetically, commit to ten years of the Suns sucking like a Timberwolf for a single championship. The subsequent poll showed that most people would. It brought to mind a different question, one that might hit a little closer to home for some of you. It has to do with our beloved face of the franchise, two-time MVP and lifetime Canadian goofball, Steve Nash. Here's the question.

Would you trade Steve Nash for a guaranteed Suns championship in 2011?

Here are the specifics. The hypothetical question that I'm posing would ensure at least one Phoenix Suns championship upon the trading of Steve Nash. Whom he would supposedly be traded for is irrelevant, just use your imagination and keep it at that. There are no strings attached to the deal that stipulate that they must suck eggs for the next ten years, after their one title they are free to compete for more but only one is guaranteed.

On the flipside, if you choose not to trade Steve the Suns can still try to win a title with him on board, so theoretically you can have both the championship and Nash in one tasty combo meal. Logically we are looking at two or three more chances before Steve calls it a career and his number 13 goes up into the rafters.

Star-divide

Just to make it clear what you are wagering, I thought I would provide some visuals.

This picture collage that was provided by our own waxmonkey will do quite well to remind you of the awesomeness of Steve Nash. This is who we're talking about trading.

But if you trade him, you will prevent the following display of disgusting, vile filth from happening:

I agree.

For me it’s a no-brainer, but I’m curious to see what the consensus is.

So if Steve Nash was a Raptor or Knick you wouldn’t be a Suns fan or you wouldn’t watch the Suns?

by Scott Howard on Aug 21, 2010 6:32 PM MST up reply actions

No, I won't bail.

But I want to see Nash retire as a Sun.
I moved to Harrisburg in 1987, at the end of Mike Schmidt’s career. I was always impressed that they didn’t force him out, they let him decide when he was done, It was a display of class on both sides. I REALLY though it sucked when the D’backs let Gonzo go. I don’t want to see that happen to Nash. He’s given up blood and bone for this franchise, and it matters how his loyalty is rewarded.
I don’t think I’m more right than the people who want a championship now – I haven’t suffered as long as others. But it’s not just the championship that matters to me – I love the regular season, I love the class of guys like Nash and Grant, and I don’t want to win with a bunch of players I don’t like. I’ve said it before – if I had to root for Kobe, I would probably bail. But then, I didn’t like Raja after he clotheslined Kobe – I thought it was a cheap shot, and I lost respect for him. I also realize it made him very popular around here. But how we win matters to me.

I became a Suns fan when he came back to Phoenix, though i’ve come to love the team (itself) more.

People love the Dunk, but i'll rather see a skillful athletic shot, a super 3-pointer from another area code or seeing players get Dragic-ed

by jatrex4suns on Aug 23, 2010 4:35 AM MST up reply actions

I'm with haremoor.

The day Steve Nash retires will be the day I cry myself to sleep and buy a Goran Dragic jersey to try to calm myself down.

Steve Nash is my mancrush. But Goran Dragic is the 2nd coming of Manu Ginobili, which makes him just as tasty.

by NashMV3 on Aug 20, 2010 3:53 PM MST reply actions

Steve Nash symbolizes Suns basketball for me.

There’s no way I could do that.
I moved to Phoenix in 2001 and went to my first game in December of 2004. He’s all I can remember about Suns basketball.
There’s absolutely no way.

The point is getting rid of Steve for the Suns organization to get a ring.

No single player is bigger than the team

Even Steve Nash. He’s been the face of the franchise through arguably our most successful stretch (although, not even a Finals appearance in that stretch), he’s a 2-time MVP and there is a strong case that he is the best player in franchise history. But, we have had great players and teams before Nash, and we’ll have great players and teams after Nash. A championship is what it’s all about, and the Suns have tantalized us by coming close time after time through the years, only to let us down. Feel free to call me a heretic, but the probability of them winning one in the next two years or so with Nash is not high. I’d sacrifice the last couple of years of Nash to guarantee a championship.

by East Bay Ray on Aug 20, 2010 4:55 PM MST reply actions   1 recs

Same here

I don’t know if the Suns will even win a championship in my lifetime, I want to see it though, even if Nash leaves. If Nash was in his prime and young, then I would not do it, but since he is only and is expected to retire in the next 2-3 seasons, I would do it.

Even so, I still don’t think I would, though it’s less cut and dry. I figure the last six years of fun we’re courtesy of Steve Nash, and moving him and then winning a title would be about the biggest “F-you Steve” he could get..

by waxmonkey on Aug 20, 2010 6:15 PM MST up reply actions

To respond to your point on a personal level...

I’ve been a Suns fan since ‘90, when it was KJ, Horny, Thunder and TC running the show and the Blazers were the “hump team” that PHX couldn’t get past.

Since then I’ve experienced the jubilation of the Barkley trade, followed by the Kidd years and finally the mundane Marbury years before the return of Nash. I can say without a doubt that no player has meant more to me as a fan than Nash, and I was a huge fan of Barkley and Kidd during their respective tenures as the franchise player.

Past players may have been better, but no player has had such a combination of excellence on the court, charisma, and league-wide relevance as Nash, and I doubt we’ll ever see it again.

OK I’m starting to feel like a creeper now, I’ll save the rest for his HOF induction. I hear ya though, Ray.

Nash is a fantastic player,

but are you telling me that you wouldn’t take 2 years without Nash to finally win a championship in Phoenix after 40+ years? I would trade him for a ship’. We have Dragic to take Nash’s place, and I hope to see the Suns go out on the court and be presented the Larry O’Brien trophy by the commissioner in my lifetime. Let’s be real, unless Earl Clark gets LeBron James talent overnight, we won’t win a championship with Nash. Nash is fantastic on the court, he has playmaking skills like no other player, off the court..let’s just say he has his fair share of articles on thedirty.com. ;)

Until Nash gets that restraining order against you

I think you’re good. It’s funny, but as I think about it those KJ/Chambers/Hornacek/Majerle teams are high among my favorite all-time Suns teams. We all knew the deal, that they’d win 55 games or so, then not make it past the conference semis or conference finals, but it would a helluva fun ride! Loved the Barkley/KJ teams, but they broke my heart the most because I felt like they should have won at least one championship. The mid-2000s Suns broke my heart in the same way. They coulda/shoulda/might have won one. I’m not a “championship or bust” guy but, damn, I’d like them to win just one, at least!

And, I rec’d this because I’m eager to see the conversation that ensues. Thanks for posting it.

The line for me is a little blurred. I started Watching Basketball and the first thing I noticed was NASH.

I saw many talented players and read a lot about gretaness / legacies / Championship quests and I still chose Nash above all the rest.

The Suns are my Fav Team and the primary reason for that is NASH. He has made this journey as a fan wonderful. We may not have reached our goal yet. We may still have a long ways to go. But with pals (Players) like these, the distance does not matter.

Amare Stoudemire, when asked to comment on a 22-point third quarter against the Kings, said, "I've got a tendency to jump over some guys' heads and throw it down."

The Suns don’t need to make a deal with the Devil to win a Championship. We will do it on our own terms with or without Nash(depends whether he retires by then.)

No player is greater than a franchise and I understand basketball is a business. Nash has been loyal though almost too loyal. It wouldn’t feel so good if we traded loyalty for a Championship. I’d rather have the first championship feel great. Having patience will result in deeper happiness.

I like Nash and when he retires I will still be on here rooting for the Suns.

by Beavis 25 on Aug 22, 2010 12:36 PM MST reply actions

You're using the word loyalty in reference to the word franchise...

Given how many teams relocate, it’s clear that any loyalty is one-sided, and that it’s really not possible to have the same emotional investment in a team that one might have for a college team, for example.

You can see that when you visit a live game, and a good chunk of the people are simply there to be seen. Or what happens when a team starts to slide (like the Suns did the year before) such as season ticket sales plummeting. The character of a fan base is determined by it’s support during the lean years, and it’s not clear that any team, except for the Knicks and maybe Portland, has that.

is any one curios on how 2NASHTY will weigh in on this.....?

I watch every basketball game I possibly can. despite never playing orginized ball I talk like i coach the game. I saw Kobe and shack and never thought “Wow I need to follow this sport to a level nearing obsession”. I remember a friend in school who wrote barkley a persusive essay on why he should not retire as his english assignment. I thought he was nuts. when I was going to ASU and living in a roach infested 1 bedroom off collage, I would be pissed when a suns game was on because it meant UPN wouldn’t air “that 70’s show” reruns. then I was at Mcduffy’s one nite, I had started to notice the suns because i had heard they didn’t suck. it was the play offs and they were playing some team called the mavericks…and thats when it all changed. I had never enjoid watching any sports before.I didn’t even know positions exisited in basketball. amare and marion were great but even I could tell it was nash making it all happen. when i set up my SBN account I thought a handle that referenced a player would be sophmoric…but then I realized, if not for that player I wouldn’t even know what a point guard is. Nash will someday retire and I will keep watching BBall, and probably rooting for the suns; but it’s all thanks to nash.
BTW…when 2 time retires haremoore and I are meeting early at the bar to play a game called “hey remember when Nash….” your all invited.

I’ve rooted for this team since I was 8. I’ll turn 50 in a couple of months.
And I can tell you honestly that it wouldn’t mean jack squat to me if some band of mercenaries in Suns uniforms hoisted a trophy.

Why would I root of Miami or LA?

I don’t root for the Suns because of Nash, or any other players. I root for them because they are my hometown team. What is the goal during the NBA season? I think it’s to win a championship. Also, please define “Band of Mercenaries” me.

A band of mercenaries

What I’m talking about here is players who have no loyalty or feeling for fans or team or city or organization — just in it for the money and personal aggrandizement.
We’ve just been treated to the quintessential example: See “The Decision” for reference.
I have a hard time stomaching a situation where three of the league’s best players meet to decide which random city they’ll choose to bless with their presence and a probable championship.
I’m not sure if this year’s Suns will be all that great or not. But I’ll still enjoy watching them a lot more than I would if we’d been the beneficiaries of the Miami Hustle.

It won’t feel so good winning a championship if you know its going to happen though. I’d rather have the first one be great.

We disagree, but that’s a helluva statement.

Sometimes its a business

Sometimes its emotional.

I have followed the SUNS only since the Sarver/Nash Era.

I know I will continue to follow the SUNS after Nash Retires. Even if we do not win ’Ship.

The Test of my Fandom would be on the day when the SUNS Organization becomes one without class. With Mercenaries for hire, no loyalties / no commitments to winning but great talents nevertheless. (Something like the Clippers, maybe)

Would I be a Suns Fan if it felt like an organization of Mercenaries ??? Players within an Organization become mercenaries after the organization itself follows that route. If the player still wants to be a merc. the organization can still purge itself.

If I wanted ’Ships – I would follow the Lakers / Celtics / Spurs
If I Wanted Class/Loyalty – I would follow the Spurs / Suns / Magic / Rockets
If I wanted Drama – I would follow the Knicks / Cavs /

It could be a great post. Would you be a SUNS fan if the Suns were run like the Clippers.

Yes

I am a fan of Arizona sports, I’m not a bandwagon Nash fan. Like East Bay Ray said, Nash would be the guy saying that you can’t put 1 player ahead of the whole team.

I feel like this thread went sideways somewhere

Apparently we’d be dealing Nash for a bunch of murderers and rapists.

The premise of the thread takes no account of Nash's wishes.

If we were out of it at mid-season, and he said that was what he wanted, maybe it would give Dragic a chance to develop as the starter, maybe he could go help a contender win a title, I’d be cool with that. I’m a Suns fan first, but I’d be less of a fan of the organization if they wronged Nash. Or Grant. Or anybody.

Keep 'em

Honestly, no. Sure, a guaranteed championship would be nice, but that would probably entail the Suns leaving their current style of basketball. I want them to win, and I want them to win with Nash, running the style of basketball that he is adept with. If anything, just to show the experts that they don’t know everything there is to know.
