Man…What is up with all of the instability that seems to be surrounding this team? Do the players know something we don’t?

First Reynolds bounces to Italy, crushing my visions of a capable backup for Dragic once Nash retires. Then Collins (Mr Irrelevant) jets overseas rather than attempting to make our roster as a possible PF/C hybrid and a third big man we are hoping to acquire. And now even Dragic is hinting that he would rather go back overseas when his contract expires…What gives?

At this point, we will need to hope that Nash plays until he’s 40. Just when we think we are geared up for the future…the rug comes out from under us..

Don’t do it Dragic!!!

Lost in translation

Don’t worry Suns fans Slovenia was playing in Greece and local media probably asked him if he would play there(lockout or maybe at the end of career) and of course smart people would say why not who knows because maybe at the end of his career or in case of a lockout season he would indeed play there.

during a lockout

players can’t jump ship to Europe. But completely agree with you

I wouldn't use Reynolds and Collins

as examples of players “jumping ship” since they would have been fighting for 14th on the depth chart (13th at highest)

On the plus side

I now have an understanding of TPEs that I didn’t previously, specifically that whole simultaneous vs non-simultaneous thing – pending confirmation from Coon. Though I don’t know if I did it right. I’m not a tweeter.

See what happens when I don’t get a regular heated argument? I f-ing read. Shameful.

by waxmonkey on Aug 21, 2010 10:08 PM MST up reply actions

I would...and did

because I was pointing out the relevance of the time frame…not the importance of the positions. In the last two months, we have lost two prospective players overseas, and now our rising star, Dragic, is also hinting at his wishes to eventually return to Europe.

I can't believe this! ;(

This is only a rumor, right? I mean, I just can’t believe he would do something like this! After all the success and support he had after this year, after they came so close to going to the Finals, why would he throw it all away? He is supposed to be the future of this team!! ;( ;(

Yeah. Hopefully we get some official word from Goran soon..

I cried when I saw the headline. And then my mom asked why I was crying and I showed her the article and she said hmm, he might change his mind.
Then I tried to get myself the article and I read the article and only felt a little better… :(

I feel bad, my friend doesnt know. She didnt answer her phone or her Facebook wall post.
Ever since I read the entire thing and calmed down a little, I felt a lot better.
He was talking to a European paper.
And even if he wasnt leaving, we would have had to shell out the cash when this contract was done anyways so another NBA franchise didn’t grab him.

If this is true...

We need to offer him a contract extension as soon as possible. No games, no messing around…We know what Dragic is capable of, and what he will continue to progress into. Let’s lock him up right away for the longest period of time as possible and make him an offer he can’t refuse!

Agree 100%

We can’t take any chances!! I invest a lot of time and sometimes money into being his biggest fan! I love him so much! He can’t do this to us! I can’t imagine what I’d do if he left! Once he’s back, maybe he’ll remember that he loves it here and then money will make him stay!

whoa hey

the Suns have exclusive rights (here AND Europe and anywhere) for 2 yrs. No rush on the extension. Suns rushed on Diaw and Barbosa, and look where that got us.

Blogging Suns Basketball at Bright Side of the Sun

by Alex Laugan on Aug 21, 2010 9:39 PM MST up reply actions

Dragic is no Diaw or Barbosa...

Maybe you aren’t convinced, but I have seen enough to know that Dragic is the real deal. Why wait around and gamble with his future? The NBA is quickly losing the monopoly it enjoyed over the premier talent in this world, and European teams are quickly becoming a feasible option for many of the players who face either uncertainty or a lesser paycheck to play here.

I’m not saying it’s full on panic time either, and I realize we have him for at least two more years if we want him. However, I wouldn’t think it would be wise to wait until the last minute to try to get something done with him, I would make sure he realizes his importance to our team and our future going forward, and begin the process of securing him to a longer term contract once it is fiscally reasonable to do so.

I was wondering

How he was adjusting culturally and how he likes the US, whether he wants to live in the US forever, become a citizen, etc. It sounded to me like some of his struggles in his first year were due to being a young guy in a strange land and not feeling comfortable.

I hope he stays in Phoenix for the rest of his career, but it wouldn’t totally surprise me if there is some truth in this, that he might at least be considering leaving.

I don't know....

I would not take this to heart just yet. It would be terrible news for sure, but we have not got any official word from Dragic himself, and he has not even commented on this yet.

I also don’t think the front office is going to let him walk out of the NBA.

Has anyone ever heard of negotiating? What do you think it would take to keep Goran here? I’ll give you a hint – it rhymes with ‘funny’, and has this in front ($) and lots of these (0) in back.
Believe me, we’ll see Zoran in Phoenix before we see Goran in Europe during the season.

By the way, Dudley tweeted that he might go with him.

Maybe he prefers Europe because Vujacic won't be there.

But on a serious note, it’s either a money play or the writer twisted his words. The media tends to do that.

Steve Nash is my mancrush. But Goran Dragic is the 2nd coming of Manu Ginobili, which makes him just as tasty.

nothing like this is posted on relevant slovenian portals

I see it like this… greek teams are the ones paying most money in europe, remember childress, even dominique wilkins played for Pao… so their reporters decided to bring it up during the interview and he politely answered… as he is a nice guy… my thought on euro-nba thing is that all good euro players dream about play important role in nba and most of the best euro players in last 20 years came in nba… even splitter is coming finally… those who played important roles to their teams stayed, those who didn’t, returned… I have many examples for that…

so, back to goran, after first season sure, that option was more realistis… had he played second season the same way he did first one, I am sure he would have thought seriously about coming back… now, after that breakout season, and even better next one, the chance that he will come back is slim

otherwise goran is the man of the slovenian team… they are doing so-so, winning 7 of 12 games they played so far, but all journalists are pointing out that their game depend so much on how goran plays… he pured in 27 vs serbia in 1point loss few days ago….

I have a big trouble, my croatian team is playing slovenia on day 3… so let’s put it like this, if goran puts in 40+10+10 and croatia wins, I am happy… not my friend Blaz I guess… :-)

Am I the only one who, without more evidence that he’s unhappy, supposes Dragic was merely being a good diplomat?

Well, that update makes me feel a lot better.

Perhaps I was a little dramatic and panicked too quickly..
But what was I supposed to do? I love him! The thought of him leaving is too sad to even think about! So seeing the fears I had about him leaving being addressed, it felt like, for a brief moment, everything was crashing down around me… I feel a lot better now, but I can’t help feeling slightly apprehensive still.
Hopefully, nothing like this ever actually happens.

“considering the $1 million he paid out of his own pocket to buy out of his Spanish contract to come to the NBA and fulfill his dream, it really seems unlikely that Dragic would be headed back to a European club so soon.”

Yeah I totally spaced that. Why would a guy do that, and then just give it all up right when he’s starting to get into his prime?? Doesn’t make sense. I don’t think Dragic is going anywhere.

Think for yourself fellas

Dragic isn’t giving up his top shelf Slovenian Vodka to go to the Euroleague and stay in trashy hotels, the money is here. Theres a reason Dirk stayed he was horrible for the first 3 years….

by PandRisDead on Aug 22, 2010 12:27 AM MST reply actions

Let's think about this

Goran is at a career crossroads right now. 2 yrs into a 4-yr deal, one of them a team option. He can’t go anywhere the Suns don’t want him to go, for 2 seasons.

But he still has to think of his future. He’s got to think about “what if the new management goes balls out and trades for Chris Paul next year or the year after?” In that case, there’s no starting gig in Phoenix.

But he also knows Phoenix hired his personal coach to work with him and other players all season, so he knows the Suns are interested in him succeeding. He’s never indicated he wants to leave, in fact he’s has always said how much he wants to be here.

I think this is just a case of Goran answering a question politely, using a logical brain. If he’s a free agent in 2 seasons and Greece offers him 10+ million a year, tax free and with free housing and transportation (that’s what Childress got), why already shut that door?

Doesn’t mean he wants to leave the NBA. But he knows one day the NBA won’t want him, and he can extend his career in Europe.

I like your thoughts on this. It's a very common sense approach.

It makes me feel even better than I already was. This all initially freaked me out but the more I thought about it the more I thought about all the times he’s talked about how happy he is to play with his hero, Steve Nash..

Somebody show this man all that Steve Nash has and tell him, “that can be you in a few years”.

Somebody remind him that he was the answer to destroying the Spurs whom we so struggled with in years past.
