Phoenix Mercury Playoff Time
Remember back in May when the Suns swept the Spurs? That was cool.
Well, the Phoenix Mercury are set up to do the same thing to the San Antonio Silver Stars.
Here's the series preview (which clearly demonstrates how much I miss writing about basketball):
Phoenix Mercury Playoff Preview: Primed For Sweep Of San Antonio Silver Stars - SB Nation Arizona

I noticed that too.
I’m not much of a WNBA fan, but I’m not one of those guys that hate it and constantly make fun of it either. I watch a few minutes now and then, and I do root for the Mercury to win. Diana Taurasi is a great basketball player, and I’m glad she signed an extension. Good luck Phoenix and go for the sweep.
(Forgive me if I don’t read the preview though).
I'm kind of there with you.

Don't worry
I wrote it and probably won’t read it either…

The Merc would have had 7 guaranteed seats
if they’d played on Friday, Sat or Sun in Phoenix. But no, of course not.
In fact, not one damn sports franchise/team is playing this weekend in Phoenix. No, Suns, no Cards, no Rattlers, no Sun Devils, no friggin Mercury… geez. Not even any plays or shows (besides Megadeth)
I got family coming in from out of town for 3 days and I don’t know what to do with them. I wanted to take them to a local event. Yet, there’s no friggin events in Phoenix this weekend!!!! Ugh. Now I have to think of something else.

Welcome to Omaha.
The only thing we have going for us is Creighton basketball (still offseason). The zoo is great, but it gets old after a while.
We’re getting a UFL team this year, so I guess that will be something to watch.
Forgive me If I don’t feel sorry for you not being able to watch a pro sporting event this weekend.
I've seen it a couple dozen times...
It’s great and all, but you can only see a gorilla taking a nap so many times.
It was 100 in SF today
first for a long time, but trying to sleep without AC is hell, other than warm weather, nothing to do, I know, I know, it’s SF, but the Suburbs are way boring.

TURRIBLE!
Random thought
The Mercury (and most of the WNBA) at some point in the season wear pink uniforms in support of Breast Health Awareness…good stuff. We all can get behind saving boobs.
I am thinking though the Suns (and rest of the NBA) should do something for balls. Testicles. Would they wear blue uniforms in support of Ball Health?

I actually bought tickets for this!
I used to be a WNBA hater, before I watched it that is. All my life I had people telling me how lame it was so I just stuck with the NBA. But this year, I was so desperate for basketball in the offseason, that I started watching it and I realized that it isn’t lame at all and I now have incredible respect for those women. It’s amazing to see women who are that strong and competitive. Especially Diana Taurasi. She is unbelievable to me! So I bought my very first ever Mercury tickets for Thursday night! Im pretty excited; I’ve never been to a WNBA game. Go Mercury! :)

its not good
when the any fella playin at the ol YMCA could ball up all of the sports biggest stars. Thats where the WNBA is right now….
what? sorry, I don't understand
BTW: any WNBA player would kick any YMCA player’s ass, any day of the week.

Have you ever tried to "ball up" a dedicated female basketball player?
No offense, but I’ve seen some talented females take the court. None of whom you, nor I, have a chance against. Briann January (woops, there I go name-dropping again) frequented the ASU rec. center to play hoops against the boys. She was easily the most intense and gifted player there, even at a staggering 5’9".
So, forget, you’d be mistaken to believe you (or any fella at the ol YMCA) are better than WNBA athletes.

look their skills might be fine
but they are slower and weaker than every guy, its just the way it is. Its just lame that colleges continue to cut sports like wrestling in order to keep womens sports.
Wow.
So every woman is slower and weaker than every man? Sorry, but that’s not the way it is. Compare WNBA players to NBA players, sure that’s true (mostly). But comparing a professional basketball player, regardless of gender, to some dude off the street is just ignorant. Have you every watched a WNBA game? Those women are completely dedicated to their craft and are very good athletes. Sure, they can’t jump out of the gym like some guys, but so what? I’d like to see you take on Candace Parker or Tina Charles. Now that would be entertaining.
And saying a college should cut every woman’s athleteic team so that a school can keep more fringe men’s sports is just not fair. These girls work just as hard if not harder than the guys and they deserve to earn scholorships too.
no
but wrestling is one of the purest sports out there, and should not be cut from any school
Im not a feminist or anything but I really disagree with what you're saying here...
I do prefer the NBA over the WNBA. But I by no means respect the WNBA any less.
As a teenage girl, I can say that there is not a plethora of incredible female role models out there for me to look up to.
Im not good at basketball but I love it so much and to see such strong, talented, and dedicated women is motivating. Every time I don’t want to exercise, I think about how strong they are and how much I would love to be able to play basketball like them.
So, I can say that the fact that they are female role models is enough reason to not cut womens sports. But it’s not even just that. These women may not be as athletic but I can guarantee you that they could take on a lot of guys who are in the NBA.
Sasha Vujacic, for example, as Omaha Sun pointed out up above.

good points
yea i see what ur saying, but there is no way they could take an nba player, ever. Its cool that the wnba athletes give u motivation though
I understand the point you're trying to make about males having more athleticism.
I agree with you. But, I am sure that there are some NBA players that some WNBA players could take on. And “take on” doesn’t necessarily mean winning. It could just mean playing a tough game and losing by a few points. I would consider that “taking on” an NBA player.

but don't forget, forget
that you started this by saying a guy from the YMCA could beat any NBA player
Blogging Suns Basketball at Bright Side of the Sun
i still stand by that
some people that play at my gym could easily take on everyone in the WNBA. believe me, ive watched the games. All they do is chuck up threes and slowly drive to the hoop and flip up shots, its so lame.
Just out of curiosity,
How many WNBA games have you actually sat down and watched all the way through?
Because that’s exactly what I used to think until I actually started watching games. These women are hardcore.
No, they’re not men. But they are still strong and from a lot of what i’ve seen, some of those women can run pretty darn fast.

oh
i went to one, and it was one of the worst things ever! it was like watching a highschool team play
I saw one WNBA game once too.
And I also thought it was boring. But I was so desperate for basketball that I willed myself to continue watching games. As I continued watching I started learning specific things about players and teams and the more I watched, I began to gain respect for it until finally, I enjoyed it. As an ex-WNBA hater, I understand exactly where you’re coming from. I really do. You should really give it a few more chances, though. I don’t think I completely fell in love with Suns basketball after my very first game… I’m not saying you have to love women’s basketball, I just think you’ll have a lot more respect for the WNBA if give it more of a chance. That’s how it happened for me.

Oh, my apologies.
I could’ve sworn I heard Sasha Vujacic in there somewhere and it made complete sense since we are talking about men who could be beat by women…
;)

I got an email for $3 ticket deal
$3?! I’d go but I’m flying out of town for work.
I encourage everyone to go if they can.
I was able to make it to the West Finals last year against LA.
Sitting lower bowl in WNBA playoffs is thisclose to being as good as upper bowl Suns playoffs. Seriously.
Hey everyone
Glad to see the Mercury on the front page. Are we going to meet in the conference finals?

The Sparks? Nuh-uh. This ain't 2008 OR 2009. Storm all the way, baby!
