Around SBN: NFL Owners Vote to Change Trade Deadline

JOSH SMITH

If we are to believe the comments from BSOTS fans, Josh Smith is one of the favorite players to play the PF position with the Suns. Why not? Is it possible? Do we have the right players to try a trade? I think so.

http://games.espn.go.com/nba/tradeMachine?tradeId=26xyn3n

Hollinger's Analysis: +10 wins

With this trade you have increased this team's projected wins by 10.

Woof!!!  10 more wins; that means 64 wins in the 2010-2011 season, or what is the same, court advantage all the series.

Why did the Suns should make this trade? For obvious reasons, there is no need to explain.

The problem is Atlanta. They have resign JJ, but I get the feeling of being a very unbalanced roster; from my point of view there are many guards and PF, and few SF and C. For the SF position they are very week: Marvin Williams and Maurice Evans, that’s not much. They may play with Bibby – JJ – Williams – Turk - Hordford.

It’s clear that the Hawks aren’t dumb. What else can we offer? 2 first  rounds, 2011 and 2012? Clark? Why not?

It seems that 2 first round are too much, but they would be very low, in fact, they would be the n º 30

Suns' roster. A strong starting lineup: Nash-JRich-Hill-Josh Smith-Robin. Off the bench:: Dragic-Childress-Dudley-Lawal-Frye. My bet for the PF position is Lawal. Why? There are 96 minutes available for four players in the front court. Josh Smith played 35' last season; Frye played 27’ and Robin should be important this year and play 25-30'. If Robin plays 25' there are 9' for Warrick. I think these 9’ should be for Lawal and see his progress.

Then we can use Warrick to get a future first round and cut the payroll.

The current payroll is  61,846,737 m$ with 13 players. If the trade is carried out successfully we have a payroll of  63,330,887 m$ with 13 players. But what is more important, we have a younger roster, more balanced and the possibility of using players (Warrick, Clark, JRich) to improve the team via trade, or getting future first rounds.

You know I'm a big fan of how Josh Smith would fit on this team

and I’d love to see a trade go down. And I know we’d HAVE to move at least 1 rotation player out, in order to fit him into the minutes equation.

However, there’s no way the Suns trade away 2 of their 3 summer acquisitions before they even play a game with the Suns. And if this trade happens at the deadline next Feb, its an indication that the season has been horrible so far. Otherwise, we wouldn’t want to mess with chemistry at that time to such a degree.

Quick tip to you (future NBA GM)

Don’t trade 2 future 1st rounders. Ever.
1 injury/suspension will derail your franchise.
Also, Hollinger’s +/- win total is based on PER, not team chemistry.
I don’t know Josh Smith very well, but he seems to have the Amar’e “me-me-me” attitude.
Oh, and he can’t palm the basketball – hands are too small.

The Lakers traded 2 future 1st rounders for Pau Gasol and that sure worked out for them

I agree with you about Josh Smith and about this trade overall, but disagree that it’s a hard and fast rule to never trade 2 future 1st rounders.

by East Bay Ray on Aug 25, 2010 10:35 AM MST up reply actions

Hm, so it could be considered a rule

with a few exceptions. Also, I think the league prohibits trading back-to-back first rounders. The Lakers gave up 2008 and 2010, but again, I would’ve pushed for the exact same thing for the Suns.

It was Marc Gasol, Kwame Brown and Greivis Vasquez, Jarvas Critterton and Aaron Mckie for Pau Gasol

Well, that’s how turned out. At that time, for all we know Marc Gasol could have ended up being a bust.

Correct. We have former Cavs owner Ted Stepien to thank.

Yes to Josh Smith

No to giving away two first rounders. Who are we, the Jazz?

I don't like the idea of giving away draft picks

but honestly, in this rotation, are they going to get any PT? Or just another Earl Clark?

funny, that's what

bryan Colangelo probably, most likely, said before the 2004 draft.

The Suns had Marion (22), Amare (21), Joe Johnson (21), and LB (20) in their rotation heading into the summer, plus a number of other youngsters 22 and under (Maceij Lampe, Zabarkaba (sp?), etc).

Thinking there wasn’t room for another youngster and that they needed veterans, BC traded away the #9 pick (which turned out to be Iguodala) for cash and #31 (jackson vroman). Then the next 2 yrs, they traded out of the draft as well… and this was before the salary cap caused financial constraints.

So, still think we should trade #1s because, at this moment, we don’t see where they’d fit in the rotation?

Exactamundo.

(and it’s Zarko Cabarkapa, by the way)
Draft picks are as important as ever right now. We have the 1 and 5 positions locked up, but aside from that our only other young guys (reserving the mention of Lawal until I actually see him play) are Dudley and Clark, the former being a role player and the latter being Earl Clark. We need one more piece to carry us into the post-Nash era, and that piece could be found with a late first rounder.

I don't think we need vets or youngsters

we are stacked atm, let’s see where this team takes us first, then we’ll make changes.

And, the projected +10 wins for the Suns

Is based on win amount projected from the current roster, not the number of wins they had last regular season.

by East Bay Ray on Aug 25, 2010 10:23 AM MST reply actions

lol wtf

why would the hawks want to take on payroll an older player that is redundant in their system. I personally don’t think the hawks would even remotely consider such a trade. The two first rounders are good but if they wanted to go strait into rebuilding by picking up a sf instead of a center, then they might as well go after jason richardson and his expiring contract. Besides, how much are they going to have to pay harford next season? From my limited information on hawks basketball i would think this is a ridiculous proposal.

Jamal Crawford demands extension or trade

http://blogs.ajc.com/hawks/2010/08/27/atlanta-hawks-jamal-crawford-wants-trade-without-contract-extension/

If the Hawks extend him, then the Horford/Smith possibilities become real. If they trade him, then the lottery is probably over.

by waxmonkey on Aug 28, 2010 11:26 AM MST reply actions

Yeah, he's looking for some pretty big bucks, too - $12-13 mil a year.

Can you say “Luxury Tax”?

He's worth it.

Stats are very similar to J-Rich’s for (currently) $4.5m/year less money – and he does it off the bench with Bibby and whoever they have at the time behind Bibby as his PG.

If the Hawks don’t extend, I’m betting someone out there will pay up $12m/year in a heartbeat.

by waxmonkey on Aug 28, 2010 1:40 PM MST up reply actions

I believe he was the PG playing behind bibby.

The Hawks offense was mainly 1-on1 anyway, so they didn’t really need a PG. Crawford replaced Bibby, and they let JJ and jamal split the ball-handling duties.

Anyway, the Hawks are in trouble. JJ was locked up for 6 years at $20 mil a year. Horford needs a new contract. Now Crawford is calling for them to fork over the dough. Thy still need to bring in legit C to challenge for a title. They might have no choice but to get rid of J-Smoove.

The problem is they would need exporong contracts in return. J-Rich and Grant are really all we have to offer, and I don’t think it would be worth it to ditch them for Smoove.

by Omaha Sun on Aug 28, 2010 1:52 PM MST up reply actions

Yes, technically it was split between him and Teague.

But my point was that he put up J-Rich numbers without any help at only 70% of the cost.

Fun fact: the offensive game plan in Atlanta is known as the “Iso-Joe”.

By the way, you may have missed some of our previous (and painfully in-depth) discussions on this subject.

It is unlikely that the Hawks will trade for any expiring contracts, as that would look bad after maxing out JJ. They are much more likely to move Crawford or Smith for a half price center and maybe a point guard, and use the savings to resign Horford. However, they still seem to be desperately looking for a way to keep all of them and add a center without going too far into the luxury tax.

It’s not a straight up option, but I’d trade Richardson for Smith.

by jc79 on Aug 29, 2010 9:08 PM MST up reply actions

Of course he's worth it - if the Hawks don't give it to him, another team certainly will.

But that’s the point. This is what we were hoping for – Atlanta can’t pay 4 players max money.

This is only what we're hoping for if Atlanta pays Crawford.

I’m afraid the real choice was always between Crawford and Smith. Smith is more of the fan favorite and “franchise” player. Crawford coming out like this publicly makes it easier for Atlanta to choose him to be the one to go – though it’s probably a choice they didn’t want to make yet.

This feels like bad news, as I suspect Atlanta is going to trade him once they find something worthwhile, and ignore him in the meantime.

by waxmonkey on Aug 29, 2010 8:35 AM MST up reply actions

I hop you're wrong. But you may be right.

I’m hoping that in the wake of the JJ signing, they won’t be able to let Crawford go. But if it was me, I would surely prioritize Horford and Smith. Oh, well, we’ll see.

by haremoor on Aug 29, 2010 10:56 AM MST up reply actions

Me too.

Crawford is technically a backup to JJ, while Smith (will be) a backup to Horford. Both of them are really expensive for backups.

One thing we have going for us is that lots of the offense runs through JJ in crunch time. Omaha correctly pointed out that often Crawford will be put at point guard on the floor with JJ at the end of games, even though he’s really just playing as a second shooting guard. This might be seen as versatility that Smith can’t match, as Smith doesn’t fit well at Center or at Small Forward when Horford is on the floor at the four.

Still, Smith is much more popular than Crawford in Atlanta, and the fans are already angry at the ASG (Hawks management), so if it’s a wash then the fan reaction might be enough to make them decide to keep Smith.

Most likely scenario to me – both Smith and Crawford are quietly shopped, and the one that hooks the biggest fish will be the one let go.

by waxmonkey on Aug 29, 2010 1:42 PM MST up reply actions

Well, it's good that they are being forced to deal with Crawford before the season -

they were going to have to do it this year, anyway. I hope they keep him. They also have Marvin Williams, Bibby, and Pachulia under contract for a long time – they can’t possibly keep all of them. The timing might work against us, but it might work for us.
They will make a qualifying offer of $7,143,652 to Horford, or they will negotiate an extension. I’m hoping we get a chance to run that up to max.
