Lakers Lost. Suns Possible Gain?

Hi everyone,

This is my first post but I been following this forum for a quite a while. Okay, I am going to get straight to the idea I thought of.

As you guys know Lakers decide to not resign Mbenga. I know he is not exactly the "best" center out there but there is still a lot not known about him. He was never given any mins ever. I think he could be an excellent fit behind Lopez.

I think his strongest asset is definitely his defense skills. He has pretty good shot blocking abilities. His big and strong body would also be good against any big centers. He will prove to be useful in the Western playoffs when we are going to face some big center such as Bynum, Yao, or possibly Jefferson.

I understand his main weakness is his offense. However, I honestly think that people don't give him much credit for it. He seems to be able to hit his 15 ft jumpers pretty constantly. I am sure that he will get a couple pound and hustle pts too. That should be good enough since he will only be a back up. He will mostly come off the bench providing Lopez with some rest and maintain the defense presence that the Suns need to win.

He also seems to be very supportive with his team. He has never cause any trouble within the Lakers and has never publicly complain about his playing time. Actually, now that I thought about it, he did get in a fight with Sasha in practice but that only happened because Sasha is a douchebag so that incident doesn't really count.

My last point to possibly get him is because of his cheap salary. We would only probably have to pay him 800 - 1.1 mil a year. That is a reasonably price for a 7 ft footer that get defend well, score a couple, and give valuable rest to the still injury venerable Lopez.

On yeah, he might also provide the Suns with some valuable information to beat the Lakers the coming season during the Western Conference Finals. (For people don't think that is possible for the Suns to make the WCF again: We can always dream and aim high? Haha)

Well, that was just something I thought about when I saw the news of Mbenga today. I hope that could possible provide some useful insight.

Not a bad idea if he's willing to spend most of his time riding the pine

He just won’t get any minutes unless Frye or Lopez get injured, or we play Frye some at 4 (which isn’t my preference, but isn’t out of the question). I’d think Mbenga will end up on a team where he’ll have more opportunity to play. Athletic 7 footers are hard to come by. Makes me wonder what fatal flaw he has that caused the Lakers to let him walk.

If his past is any indication

he should have no problem with limited playtime.

True

I just think another team might offer him more opportunity and money.

What I understand is that if he doesn't play, he gets rusty.

Of course, that will happen with anybody, but Jackson wouldn’t bring him in, because he hadn’t played enough recently, which is kind of a contradiction in terms – but it’s also cautionary – whoever ‘rides the pine’ isn’t going to get many minutes, and is going to have to take it on himself to be ready to play.

I also thought this was funny

Saw it on the Jazz SB blog when I was looking for Mbenga information. He’s a guy they’re talking about too.

Any list where Jarron Collins starts to look half-bad (as opposed to his regular full-awful) is a bad list.

Mbenga ...

“…he did get in a fight with Sasha…”
Thats only a PLUS !!!
Get Mbenga and create anti Sasha Front !!!

His lack of offense...

Actually is not that big of a deal at all. We don’t need him to score, just be a big body, grab some boards, foul hard, and play some defense.

I like his sense of humor

He posted this to his Facebook page:

“(LeBron James + Chris Bosh + Dwayne Wade)x2 = DJ MBENGA!!!!

(0+0+1)x2 = 2
1×2 =2
2=2"

Addition Reasons to get Mbenga

Lets not forget he has a black belt in Karate and a Phd in some degree.

This means he can back up any teammate in a fight and also help out any teammates’ kids in their studies. Plus and Plus.

Where else can you get that kind of combination in an NBA player?

This isn’t a bad idea. On the other hand, maybe the Lakers dumped him for a reason other than money.

Because he had character issues that hurt his draft stock, Derrick Caracter’s name is funny. I wonder whether his middle name is Lowe.

Mensah-Bonsu

This reminds me: what about that other African center with a hyphenated name, Pops Mensah-Bonsu? I’ve heard vaguely good things about him.

I'd say get him

For a vet’s minimum. Robin can have a playmate at practice.

Steve Nash can only give 100 percent. The other 10 percent he donates to his families.

I believe in the destiny of the Suns. We can prevail.

He's gotten into fights with 2 of his teammates in practice...

Vujacic is totally forgiveable, but he had another one last year with one of the Lakers’ other centers. Whatsisname?

Mbenga's problem is his foul rate.

In an uptempo system, you can’t depend on guys like him for very long. His energy is great, but that style of play penalizes the team. Opponents get to the line and into the penalty very quickly. And you can’t allow opposing 2nd units to score efficiently. They’re not supposed to do that. That’s usually why they’re on the 2nd unit.

If he can be coached into playing with a lot more self-discipline, even then, I’m not sure if he’s worth it. He’s got a good motor and is very athletic for somebody his size. That’s it.
