El Dragon Spits And Sputters Against Team USA
All it takes is a little foul trouble to get Goran Dragic off his aggressive game, and Slovenia lost by 22.
Chauncey Billups induced a couple of backcourt fouls on Dragic through a combination of his veteran wiles and Dragic's over-aggressiveness. From then on, Goran was hardly a factor. He finished with 7 points on 2-for-8 shooting, 4 assists and 2 rebounds.
Frankly, Slovenia looked mentally overmatched from the start. It doesn't help when your 2-time Euroleague MVP and backcourt mate barely shows up for the game. Who is this guy, really?
Anyway, on a positive note, Dragic made some nice passes but his teammates refused to make any shots, even the ones that were open (which was rare). In my opinion, he was not outplayed by the opposing guards (Rose, Westbrook, Billups). Kevin Durant and Kevin Love were the big difference-makers.
What's your take on the game?

Turkoglu meanwhile, is shooting a lousy 27% (6/22) over 60 minutes in 2 games. He leads his team with 10 assists. Hopefully, he's just warming up in these early games.

Well, if Chauncey Billups is the one who schooled Dragic, it’s not much of an embarrassment. Billups is bigger (I think), stronger, more experienced and, based on this, probably smarter at this point. I would be more bothered if he’s been schooled by Rose and/or Westbrook.
I agree with you there.
Rose and Westbrook didn’t seem to be huge factors for Team USA. Although, they could’ve been and I just didn’t notice. Seeing USA run out and dunk every five seconds was starting to get frustrating, lol.

No
I was cheering for both teams though and it’s hard to watch a team fall apart no matter who it is. Im proud of USA for being a good team this year and I will always cheer for my country, but sometimes I just feel like the USA can get a bit obnoxious at times.. Totally just my own opinion though and I would still be very happy to see them win.

Rose was alright, and Westbrook played well. he came in and energized the team with aggressive defense and athletic lay-ups.
"athletic layups"
that just sounds funny

I woke up at 6:00 AM to watch this game so I could see Goran
and unfortunately, as you said above, he did not play well…
I had just been saying to my sister that Goran made so many nice passes but his teammates just weren’t finishing so im happy to see you mention that.
Honestly, I don’t think Goran played terribly. I think it was just the foul trouble (which was a little frustrating). Would it have been his best game had he not gotten into foul trouble? Probably not. But 7 points is actually better than I thought he would end with the way he looked in the beginning..
It’s unfortunate because that stretch ,in the 2nd quarter I believe, where the U.S. kept turning the ball over was a great opportunity for Slovenia but they just weren’t capitalizing off Team USA’s mistakes…
Although it wasn’t a great game, I am glad I woke up early to watch. Seeing Goran play again was so nice, regardless of how he did, and it made me even more anxious for the season to start!

I thought Billups guarded him expertly and used his size, strength, and smarts to outplay and overmatch dragic.
I think Dragic looked nervous for some reason; he was all over the place, and team USA forced him to his right alot, so that must’ve thrown him offf his game as well

I didn't notice Billups outplaying Dragic
I just noticed a couple of veteran moves to draw the foul when Billups had the ball.

that is how i saw it. Dragic looked very frustrated in the 1st Q

remember this
that Dragic’s best floormates were Jaka Lakovic and Primoz Brezec.
While Rose, Westbrook and Billups had some slightly better teammates to help them out…

Then again the second foul called on dragic as kinda BS
"Remember this sh*t at christmas!"-Terry Crews, The Expendables
and the 3rd
but still, he seemed a bit over anxious for the challenge not to mention his understanding that he’s the best player on his team and was balancing his new role.
It’s something he’s going to need to improve to go to the next level…that and his FT%

Yeah, Goran really needs to improve that ft shooting; 73% from last season is unacceptable.
Oh and the second Westbrook came in during the second Q he hit teams U.S.A’s first fg of the quarter and had a nice dish to love, he broke their cold streak.
"Remember this sh*t at christmas!"-Terry Crews, The Expendables
very true
he looked tight from the start, and Billups took advantage of that with setup fouls. Kudos to Billups for making it happen.
Dragic needs to learn to sply agressively without fouling.

Watched the game
And Dragic was a non factor, simple as that.
The US defended hard and well, as a result he couldn’t drive the lane much, when he did, he missed the shot or his kick out was missed by the outside shooter.
I'm all right with Goran's performance.
It was pretty much what I expected- he was a target of a lot of good guards, but he has the moves, he has the court vision, and he has the desire.
What he needs now is seasoning, maturity, and experience. He needs to have that Nash quality of reading the floor and knowing which of his many moves will work. He needs to play with intensity, but his emotions can unbalance him – he needs to keep them in check. He needs to control his hands more – I think the competition he has faced up to now has been the kind he can defeat with athleticism – and that’s not always possible in the NBA. He will grow over the next two years, and hopefully he will come out of that ready to lead the Suns.

I know we all love Goran
But are we gonna get some focus on Turkoglu in Turkey’s game againt Russia later today?
anyone can make a post
I’ve got family in town, so I can’t watch that game. I was fortunate to catch the 6:30 game today, before they got up.
In fact, I’m sneaking time right now to see what others thought of his game.

The refs weren't great by any stretch of the imagination.
I woke up a little late, and so Goran was already on the bench when I turned the TV on. But the fouls totally killed his game. He wasn’t abler to play aggressively, and coulkdn’t find a rythm. His shot struggled because of that, but his playmaking was fine. He just had his teammates blow the passes a lot (like you guys mentioned). I remember him setting up a big guy for a wide open dunk, but the guy traveled. 2 plays later, Goran did the exact same play and the guy flushed it. At least he still had trust in his teamamtes. Goran really needs to work on his right hand. He was forced right all game long, and he struggled a bit.
Agreed about the right hand - but I've seen him make those shots, too.

Yep.
I know he’s capable of making those shots, but he needs to be able to do it consistently. He also struggled to get all the way to the rim going right, and he mishandled the ball a few times as well (one of which resulted in a fastbreak layup for USA).
that was the only real mishandle I can recall (that giveaway)
but otherwise he just seems to not have any lift going right, when he gets near the basket.
All that is learnable and correctable. LB couldn’t make a layup his first few years, and even now still can’t finish with his left hand (he gets to the rim on either side, but always uses right hand to lay it up)

NO
he’s just tall. That’s all. Not strong and not athletic
on 3 easy attempts at the rim (courtesy of nice Dragic setups), he only converted 1 of them. And this against a short US team.

The milwaukee Bucks. He is a soft european that plays away from the basket.

I don't worry a lot
about what happens in international ball.
As I recall, Nash didn’t get much of anywhere with Team Canada, but he turned out OK for us.

Anyone see this pic off ESPN's front page?

Looks like he’s really enjoying Durant’s scented shampoo.
hey guys
Well i’m back from my vacation and am up to date with scores. But you guys probably know more about how Slovenia played during those first two games that i. I was not able to watch the games, since there was no broadcast of the game where i was, nor was i able to access internet anywhere. That sucked. My friend had to give me updates of scores with a text.
Anyway, probably won’t watch the replays, since i have some studying to do, so will only current games (today against Croatia – ironically this is where i was on vacation) and give me take on it. It’s great that you guys can watch any game you want on ESPN3 tough!
Blaz
are you going to make a post on today's win?
make sure it’s a new one. Your old post is now archived.

Nothing to worry about
It’s not like he had and all star cast out their with him. I’m an aussie and i’m looking forward to seeing Patrick Mills play but i’m not expecting much from Oz because the rest of the team is meh!
I'm at work so I can't watch it
the Slovenian coach and Goran both seem intent on keeping the ball in Lakovic’s hands. He’s a former 2-time Euroleague MVP whose led the Slovenians in int’l play for a long, long time. It’s the main reason Beno Udrih isn’t playing with the team this summer – because he wasn’t assured minutes ahead of Lakovic.
