Goran Dragic Update: Slovenia Vs. Croatia (3rd game in FIBA Worlds)
It is not easy to come back home from a vacation. It is even harder, when you go from, enjoying a warm sunny weather, enjoying the sea, the scenery, multiple cold beers and basically just relaxing, to a cold, rainy city where people are not wearing bikinis all the time.
What makes it little easier tough, is the fact that i can actually watch a basketball game that does not involve Croatia. It would have been a perfect trip, if i could only watch Slovenia beat Tunisia and then get trashed by USA.
And in a way, today's game is a perfect circle of life. I come home from vacationing in Croatia, not being able to watch games involving Slovenia, to watching Slovenia beat Croatia 91:84 on my sofa, enjoying cold beer.
First...
Quick notes:
Weird, unusual starting 5 introduction. Forgive me, if this was mentioned before, but since this is the first time I am actually watching a game from Turkey, this is the first time I am seeing this: During the introductions of a starting lineups, they first introduce starting guards for each team and that kind of introduction continues thru small forward position, power forward and then end with a center position. If I was in the audience, I wouldn't know when to cheer. Then again, I am simple minded folks.
Latest update is that about 5 thousand Slovenian fans came to Turkey to support the team. Arena looks nice. I guess green is sexy. What?!
Anyway, Uros Slokar will be playing with a knee injury, while Sani Becirovic re-injured his shoulder against USA and took an injection before the game to relieve the pain. I can tell, since his hair is done perfectly.
Hopefully, Goran Dragic will have a better game. He had a serious performance anxiety against USA, if you know what I mean. If you don't know what i mean, 2 things: 1) Watch Whois line is it anyway 2) Lucky bastard
And remember guys, it's 'this and that', not 'this or that', so feel free to pick both options.
Starting 5:
SLOVENIA: Zupan, Brezec, Udrih, Nachbar, Dragic
CROATIA: Tomic, Zoric, Tomas, Kus, Ukic
1st Q:
-
Jump-ball goes to Croatia who then commits an offensive foul with a moving screen
-
Dragic with a bad pass to Brezec under the basket, almost intercepted, but Brezec comes away with it, misses a layup, but then tips it in finally. Slovenia leads 2:0
-
Zoric with a tough offensive rebound and tip in
-
Minute and a half gone and we all saw this coming. Let's say it all together: Goran with a first personal after a turnover
-
Croatia scores, Slovenia another turnover, Ukic with a 3 and Croatia leads 6:2
-
Anything you can do, I can do better, Goran returns the three pointer. It's 6:5
-
Poor boxing out by Slovenia, Croatia looks aggressive
-
Dragic with a missed jump shot from a free throw line
-
Some sloppy basketball played by both teams. Dragic drives, passes to an open Slokar who misses a three pointer.
-
Nice drive inside by Tomas that ends with a foul. Croatia playing well, Slovenia playing not so well.
-
Fast break Slovenia, Dragic running the floor, sweet spin move and he is fouled. That spin move drew ohhhhsss from the home crowd. Well not exactly home crowd, but you know what I mean.
-
Croatia with a 3, they lead 13:9
-
Dragic with a missed shot in the post, Slokar tips the ball to Dragic who is lying on the floor and he passes to Nachbar, who drives inside, passes a back door pass to Slokar who slams it home. 13:11
-
Dragic misses a three pointer, Brezec gets the rebound, but since he holds a ball like a little girl, somebody pokes it away
-
Dragic passes to an open Slokar who drains a 3. Croatia leads 16:14
-
Sweet drive inside by Tomas, it's 18:14
-
Dragic with a great drive inside, bounces a pass to Slokar who lays it in. 18:16
-
Tomas misses at the buzzer
2nd Q:
-
Dragic rests, Lakovic playing
-
Tomas hits a 3
-
Vidmar banging inside the paint, making things difficult for Croatian defense, of course he then commits an offensive foul. Refs quickly make a similar call on the other side
-
Becirovic drives inside, passes outside to an open Slokar who drains a 3. Croatia leads 21:19
-
Time out Slovenia. Bad defense by Slovenia, Croatia hitting everything as their fans are enjoying themselves. Croatia leads 26:19
-
Dragic back with 7 minutes remaining
-
Lakovic misses a 3, Vidmar gets an offensive rebound, slams it home and is also fouled.
-
Dragic almost loses a ball, then he commits a travel and well...loses a ball for Slovenia
-
Croatia playing with Slovenia, they lead 32:24
-
Becirovic with a drive inside just to see how it feels to fly high, if you know what I mean. He scores, so I guess he likes it
-
Great play by Slovenia, Dragic who is running around screens, takes a cut to the basket, receives a nice pass from Becirovic and scores on a layup. Croatia leads 33:30
-
Dragic tries to drive inside, trips and loses a ball. He is too excited. He needs to relax
-
After a time out, weird offensive set by Slovenia. Dragic drives inside, passes to Brezec, who quickly gives him the ball back. He is trapped in the corner by 2 defenders and with a shot clock buzzer ready to buzz, he shots a tough 3 pointer that of course misses. Lakovic comes up with an offensive rebound. Becirovic drives inside, sweet pass to Brezec who misses a consecutive layups (WTF!!!!!), Becirovic gets a rebound passes to Lakovic who hits a 3
-
Bad defense by Slovenia last couple of plays, no defending, no boxing out
-
Tomas hits a downtown 3 at the buzzer, Croatia leads 44:39. Halftime
3rd Q:
-
Dragic starts the 3rd Q

After 2 minutes of play, Slovenia looks aggressive and better. They tied the score at 44
-
Dragic with a 2nd personal on Tomas.
-
Ukic with a 3. Awesome.
-
Dragic passes to Lakovic who misses a 3 pointer, but Vidmar rebound and lays it in
-
Vidmar again with a basket. Slovenia leads 48:44
-
Tomic with a 3 pointer. It's 48:47
-
Ukic with a 3 pointer from a backboard. I am about to punch somebody
-
Some questionable calls against Slovenia as they go to a timeout. Dragic wants to talk to a ref, Lakovic does not let him. Croatia leads 52:50
-
Croatia playing zone, Dragic hits a jumper
-
Dragic with a downtown 3 pointer and he gives a kiss to the crowd, Slovenia leads 55:52
-
Good defense by Dragic, Croatia turnover
-
Dragic to Nachbar for a 3 pointer, 58:52
-
Popovic returns the favour, 58:55
-
Slokar with a 3 pointer. If he plays like that injured, he should not get well. And I mean that in a most positive way possible.
-
With little less than 2 minutes to go, Dragic goes to the bench for a rest, animates the crowd to cheer even louder
-
Zupan with a 3. Slovenia leads 64:55
-
Slokar with 4 fouls, goes to the bench

4th Q:
-
Dragic starts. Nachbar with a basket while he is fouled
-
Dragic get called for a 3rd personal while rebounding a defensive rebound. Weak call

Just as I am about to say better defense by Slovenia as they are rotating and guarding the outside shooters, Popovic scores another 3. Slovenia leads 67:62
-
Dragic with a turnover, aggressive defense by Croatia
-
Ukic with a 3 and it is 67:65. Time out Slovenia. Is this a joke. Guard a 3 point line!!
-
Popovic with a downtown 3 again. Ah. I mean. Ah.
-
Dragic drives inside in the crowd, loses a ball, Brezec picks it up and lays it in. Slovenia leads 69:68
-
I am flabbergasted. Tomas with a 3 from a backboard
-
Zupan with a 3. Slovenia leads 72:71 with 6 minutes remaining. They do know that one can shoot inside the three point line right?
-
Dragic with a steal, spins, passes to Lakovic who passes to Udrih for a nice fast break finish. Slovenia leads 74:71
-
Lakovic with a step back 3! 77:71
-
Dragic with a sick Ginobili drive-is it ok to use his name here :)-Slovenia leads 80:71. I think there was travel there, but like Ginobili he wasn't called for it
-
Popovic with a jumper. Why is he not playing in a starting 5 for Croatia?! He looks like he hits everything
-
Dragic rebounding well in defense
-
Dragic goes 'overboard', commits a turnover while driving, but Croatia loses a back just as quickly. Dragic cursing himself out for that play. There, there Goran
-
Udrih misses a 3 pointer with 50 seconds to go, Zupan commits an offensive foul which is beyond ridiculous since Slovenia is in penalty and Croatia gets a chance to get closer without wasting any time. Popovic hits both. Slovenia leads 84:79
-
Quick foul on Lakovic, He hits both. 86:79
-
Ukic misses a layup after a timeout, Lakovic is fouled, he misses both. Of course

-
Dragic is fouled, he hits both. 88:80
-
Zupan slam at the buzzer, Slovenia wins 91:84
Quotes after the game:
Primoz Brezec: We played poor defense in the 1st half, regrouped in the 2nd and played better. This game was important. We all know games against Croatia and Brazil will be the ones that will decide who takes the number two spot in the group. I believe we can play better.
Gasper Vidmar: We feel great getting a win in front of a great 'home' crowd. But we must focus and prepare for a game against Brazil. Croatia has some great guards, but we manages to get their big guys in foul trouble and win this game.
Bostjan Nachbar: This was our best game so far, yet at the same time, it was only a 3rd game. It was important to get a win against a team, that we will be competing against for a 2nd or 3rd spot in the group. We won, but we have a lot of hard work left, if we want to ensure a 2nd place.
Coach Becirovic: First, i would like to thank a great crowd who is continuing to support us in great numbers and energy. We are pleased we won a game against our neighbours. I am not happy with the 1st half. We played soft, poor defense. During halftime, 'i had a little talk' with the players, and they responded with better, agressive defense that gave us the win.
Croatia coach Josip Vrankovic: We wanted to play hard and a tough game. My team played very well, especially the first half. In the third quarter we had problems with fouls with our big guys and that is why we lost. We didn't get rebounds and we made some mistakes. We tried to play faster in the fourth quarter but we missed some shots and that was the difference.
So the win against Croatia still has 'us' on a pace to be in a position to get the number two place in the group. It is even better to see, the team can respond positively after a bad first half. I have no idea how Brasil is playing, but i am sure, Slovenia needs to play a lot better if they want to win the game.
Goran Dragic played 35 minutes, had 14 points (3pt M/A: 2/3, 2pt M/A: 3/7, FT M/A: 2/2), 4 assists, 4 rebounds, one steal and 5 turnovers. If it weren't for turnovers and the way they came, i would say he played well, but with 5 turnovers and with my expectations higher, i would have to say, i want more from him. It just seems like he wants to help his team so badly, he often puts himself in a such a hard position, that often results with a turnover. He is over agressive, but then, when in foul trouble, he needs to cut the agression back and with that he sometimes doesn't know how to respond defensivly. He feels at home when on fast break, but when playing within an offensive scheme (not sure if that's entirely his fault), he needs to pick his spots better and not force it so much. To me, It almost looks like he thinks that he only has a certain amount of time in which he has to do something and that forces him to do some silly mistakes. I'm not sure why.
Jaka Lakovic did not start the game, but had a solid game. He scored 15 points in 28 minutes (altough his 3pt shot was only 2/6) and had 4 assists with 2 turnovers. The reason i am mentioning him here is because it may well be that Jaka and Goran are not meant to play together and that's why each of them is not performing as well as they could. Which is understandable. They are both point guards, altough different breeds and they are both "out of position" when playing together.
Anyway, maybe i'll write more on this next time, but USA-Brazil game starts shortly and i need to fix me something to eat. Cold beer is optional. Let's enjoy it guys!
Slovenia' next game is on Wednesday against Brazil.

thanks for the play-by-play, Blaz!
Yeah, I’ve been wondering about the Lakovic/Dragic pairing. Goran can play SG, but its not his natural position. Yet, those are 2 guys the coach wants on the floor as much as he can get.
We’ll see how they progress throughout the tourney.

interesting quote from coach Becirovic in today's newspaper
He said, that the reason he started Goran and sat Jakovic vs Croatia is, that Slovenia starts a game slowly and if both of them are playing, the both look for a ball to start the offense after a rebound/out of bounds, when one of them should be running upcourt. He said he talked to Jaka, he understands and that Jaka responded very well in a game.
It is interesting to see if this was only against Croatia or is this a pattern coach will follow. Remember, Beno Udrih left the team because coach told him, Jaka has a starting spot. We’ll see.

Didn’t Slovenia, Croatia along with Serbia and some various other countries use to be together as YugoSalvia? I think they did and the reason I mention it is because Slovenia, Croatia and Serbia are all participating in the World Championships. They would be one good team that could possibly challenge USA if they combined.
Don't trade Dudley!
'92 team by yugoslavia
would include kukoc, radja, divac, drazen petrovic, paspalj along with some other great players that didn’t play in the nba… that team was killing us college team with zo mourning and kenny anderson, not to mention all other national teams… sure, they wouldn’t have won over dream team, but would make it much more competent than any other team in that olympics
Serbia won in 98'
They played as Yugoslavia back then ( but that Yugoslavia is not the same as Socialist Federal Republic Yugoslavia zeze999 mentioned ) but changed their name from Yugoslavia to Serbia and Montenegro in 2003 and then when Montenegro announced independence, Serbia.
Blaz
back in the 80's and begining of 90's
Yugoslavia, and later Croatia and Serbia were killing teams like Spain, Turkey, Italy, France, by 30-40 points… Russia and Lithuania did so as well… basically those 4 teams were guaranteed to be 1-4 spot in european or world championship (without dream teams of course)… that all has changed from 96-97 onwards…
thanks zeze!
Your coastline is still beautifull :)
Blaz
but you have goran dragic!!!
well, I wouldn’t trade him for our coast, maybe for Piran bay :-))))))))))))))))))
Wow, did you guys watch the U.S.A/Brazil game? USA won 70-68! What a game! Barbosa nearly tied it at the end. It’s sad to say that he too had a bad game. He missed way too many open threes. Brazil would get the offensive board only to miss another open three. Odom just can’t play center. Props to the Brazilians for putting up a pretty good fight. USA’s players are just too hard to guard, its why Brazil got in foul trouble. Both teams really struggled to hit anything in the 4rth quarter. It was intense. I actually enjoy seeing teams being able to compete with US. However, if Kobe was there than there would be no competition.
Don't trade Dudley!
Billups really knows how to induce fouls
I had to chuckle when he got called for an offensive charge at a key point.
Blogging Suns Basketball at Bright Side of the Sun
Ha, i remembered your post about how Billups caused foul trouble for Goran
when i was watching tonight’s game and Brazilian point guard got into foul trouble. I said, damn Alex is totally right :)

One of the best international games I have ever seen
Its good to see Barbs do well.
Durant is an absolute monster and if I was Miami I’d trade both Wade and Lebron for him today.
This was the first real look at Splitter vs real competition and boy let me tell you its a sad day for all of Suns Basketball because Splitter chewed the Americans up on the post and boards although he only played limited minutes. They threw a lot of looks at him on the post with a constant double team, that kid is just too strong. If he hadn’t gotten in foul trouble and not able to play much of the 3rd and 4th the US surely would have been beaten. Because they had plenty of chances to do it without him!
nice strong comments but
Durant is an absolute monster and if I was Miami I’d trade both Wade and Lebron for him today
is a little too far, since Durant missed most all of his 4th quarter shots
and regarding Splitter
If he hadn’t gotten in foul trouble and not able to play much of the 3rd and 4th
Isn’t that part of the requirement to be a great player that teams fear? Ability to stay on the court in critical moments? Also, he played the last half of the fourth and didn’t score.
Blogging Suns Basketball at Bright Side of the Sun
yeah Odom was running the offense
Durant didn’t see the ball once in the last few minutes. The kid is 22. There would certainly be some argument to trade Lebron and Wade for Durant no question.
lol NO argument
Lebron is 24! Even though Durant has slightly more potential Lebron is still a level or two above him.
I would trade Wade for Durant in a heartbeat though because of Wade’s age, but talking about trading both for him is ridiculous

Bron is 26 in December and a self proclaimed “Robin”. From an investment standpoint he would be the better option because he’d fill the stands but as franchise cornerstone I’ll take my chances with the skinny 22 year old who has limitless potential.
by PandRisDead on Aug 30, 2010 10:43 PM MDT up reply actions
Wow he is 26! my bad
Still hes the best player in basketball. Wade is arguable the 2nd. (Id put him 3rd or 4th) No way you trade that for a kid who has the potential to be better then one of them.

I was just thinking
If Brazil plays anything close to this on Wednesday, Slovenia will lose easily.
Blaz
its all about different matchups though
the Brazil/Slovenia game won’t resemble this one, I don’t think.
Blogging Suns Basketball at Bright Side of the Sun
? what's your beef?
I don’t pretend to know anything about anything, but I certainly have an opinion which is why I’m here.
Splitter looked good in limited time against a smaller Lamar Odom. His opponents on Slovenia (Slokar, Vidmar and Brezec will likely defend him) are all bigger yet slower than Odom. Splitter might be better, but might be worse. All I know is that it’s a totally different type of opponent than USA was.
Also, Slovenia scores outside-in (hitting 3s) like crazy, while Team USA is more of a midrange team with Kevin Durant and dribble-drives by the USA PGs.
Also, Slovenia knows the FIBA rules like the back of their hands, while Team USA struggles with them. In the 4th quarter against Brazil, several times they lost possession due to rules infractions (“travelling” is called differently on the dribble-drive, and players can take the ball off the rim, and so on). So, Slovenia will play a bit smarter in crunch time than Team USA.
Anyway, there are a lot of factors that lead me to what I said in the previous comment.

Considering LeBron and Wade are both better than Durant and only a few years older,
that trade would be completely idiotic.
I don’t think its unanimous that Lebron and Wade are both better than Durant.
I see many more flaws and limitations in Lebron’s and Wade’s games than in Durant’s.
Wade and LeBron are both just as capable as Durant of scoring 30, and they are better all around players. Durant may have a wider scoring arsenal, but that’s about it.
I’m not sure what your basis is for saying they are better all around players. At his age we’ve seen glimpses of a killer very Kobe-like. Fact is the kid is a humble worker and you know his game will evolve every Summer. This is more than I can say for Lebron who should have a post game at this point in his career and a jump shot he can rely on consistently. Lebron hasn’t really added anything to his “scoring arsenal” since he got to the league.
Give the Durant / Westbrook combo 1 more year and we will see a contender out of this team.
by PandRisDead on Aug 30, 2010 10:18 PM MDT up reply actions
They are better distributors, better defenders, and better rebounders than Durant. Durant has a better jumper and a wider offensive arsenal, but that’s it. Durant is a very good player with a lot of potential, but I really don’t see how people can say he is the best overall player in the game or even close to it. He’s one of the best scorers, but that’s about it.
As for LeBron not improving, what are you talking about? Both his defense and his jumper have gotten better every year. He doesn’t have a post game yet but so what? He is a perimeter player and hasn’t really needed to use a post game thus far in his career. I’m sure that he will add that in the next couple of years.
I’d say that since he relies so much on his outside game you’d think he’d be able to be a knock down shooter by now. Scoring in the post I would think would be the most natural place for him since he’s bigger than most every forward in the game, he could create some havoc.
Its pretty clear that since he fled and gave up trying to win on his own there clearly some issues he’s finally realizing. That he can’t be the number 1 option.
by PandRisDead on Aug 31, 2010 10:01 PM MDT up reply actions
You can defend Lebron all you want but truth is he doesn’t work on his game over Summer that has always been one of his biggest flaws. I just don’t see him wanting to get better. I’d hardly call his jumper improved over the 7 years he’s been in the league.
Lebron is not a better rebounder and Wade definitely isn’t. Defense is something that is learned in this league and will come, along with muscle.
clearly you see Durant in a better light
than some of the rest of us. He is not better than LeBron in overall game. He’s just a better shooter.
Blogging Suns Basketball at Bright Side of the Sun
I think you are underestimating everything about this kid. I’m ecstatic about watching the Heat play its only a couple hour drive for me but a lot of the sentiment here is the same that I have about Lebron.
After Lebron, CP3, Melo drama of fleeing town to be on a contender, Durant could have done the same thing and demand a trade to be on a contending team and nobody would think negatively about it because we’re so used to it by now.
He would never do this, he signed a long term deal with his current team so they have assurance of him being in OKC to attract other talent to play with him without the uncertainty. Lebron didn’t do this nobody wanted to risk going to Cleavland with Lebron signing only a 3 year deal. That says a lot about this kid, he wants to build something on his own.

I'm not as hyped on Durant as most people are.
I think he has plenty of potential, but I’m still skeptical. I’ll believe it when I see it.
Steve Nash is my mancrush. But Goran Dragic is the 2nd coming of Manu Ginobili, which makes him just as tasty.
You're not as hyped? Ha. Good thing youre not a GM. He's one of the top 3 talents in the NBA at 22 and you're skeptical?
What do you have to see exactly? I’ve read your posts and its obvious that Nash has got you hyped…but what has Nash done to get you hyped? Nash hasn’t won a thing, Durant hasn’t won a thing. Nash isn’t going to lead a team to a championship, but Durant will. Can’t stand people on this site. Give some credit where its due instead of arguing for arguments sake. That’s all I see on this site. If I wasn’t crazy for the Suns I wouldn’t ever come here but I can’t help my crazy frandom.

His contempt for this website is bottomless, and he seems to dislike Alex more than anyone. His opinions are the only ones that matter – we should just refrain from posting, and let him rain down his wisdom upon us. We have nothing to say worth reading, anyway.

Blogging Suns Basketball at Bright Side of the Sun
I'm not trying to argue about anything. It's just my opinion.
I saw some of his college games and I actually thought Portland was going to draft him because Durant was a better pick IMO. I’m sure Durant might be one of the top 10 best players in the NBA. But to say he’s top 3 when the league has the likes of Kobe, Wade, LeBron, and CP3 playing the game is just something I can’t accept.
Well clearly Steve Nash is my favorite player. A player doesn’t have to lead a team to a championship for me to like him and pull for him. A good amount of the NBA’s top 50 greatest players didn’t win championships for their teams either. It’s just a matter of preference I guess.
Steve Nash is my mancrush. But Goran Dragic is the 2nd coming of Manu Ginobili, which makes him just as tasty.
just a comment on loyalty
LeBron resigned with Cleveland the first time, and was lauded for his loyalty. It’s the second time, after still not winning a championship and realizing that his best #2 option was Mo Williams, is when he buckled and changed his tune. I hate the buckling/running as well.
In contrast, I must say that I LOVE Durant’s demeanor. He certainly is a guy you can hang your hopes on, for sure.
But back to who’s a better overall player,
LeBron at 21
PER 28.1 true shooting % .586, Reb Rate 9.8, Assist rate 32.0, Stl Rate 2.0, Block Rate 1.5, Win Shares 16.3. Team Wins: 50
Durant at 21
PER 26.2, true shooting % .607, Reb Rate 11.0, Assist rate 13.0, Stl Rate 1.6, Block Rate 1.7, Win Shares 26.3. Team Wins: 50
So, Durant is a better shooter and rebounder at the same age. Thanks for pointing out the rebounding – I was unaware of that. LeBron was overall more effective (PER) and had a higher assist rate and steals rate.
Blogging Suns Basketball at Bright Side of the Sun
I’m not worried about the assist rate… the Cleavland offensive scheme was to let him dribble around and create, OKC has a true point guard for that in Westbrook. If Durant can put on some pounds with some PEDs his wingspan has probably 2 feet on
Lebron so you could slot him over to the PF spot on Defense as well. I’m not sure Lebron can hold PF’s in check on the defensive end considering he is only 6’8 but we will see this season…
I’m saying that Cleavland couldn’t build around Lebron because he only signed a 3 year deal with them, superstars were hesitant to play there because of his lack of loyalty to Cleavland in the first place. You can’t possibly try to build around a guy who you only have locked up for 3 years, so in that sense Lebron didn’t want to have a team built around him and possibly was going to run all along.
all good points there
Seems like Bosh, Wade and LeBron had this planned for years, since all did 3-yr deals and all none of their front offices could put together a team in that time to win a championship because of that. Very good point.
Not sure you can go so far as to say “so in that sense Lebron didn’t want to have a team built around him and possibly was going to run all along”. I’m sure he would’ve enjoyed winning a ring or two in those 3 years.
Lets go back to TIm Duncan for a minute though. Duncan came thisclose to signing with Orlando when his deal was up in the early 2000s. He’s admitted as much in interviews since. At the last minute, he stayed with SA on a fairly short deal. SA’s front office did more with less than Cleveland had. They got him a team to win rings before and after that date. Cleveland’s FO didn’t help their situation as much as SA’s did.
In the end, we’re talking about 2 of the 3-4 best players in the game today in LeBron and Durant. Both could win multiple rings before they’re done.
Durant’s the better overall person and more loyal. I hope for his sake that means he will win one or more rings.
Blogging Suns Basketball at Bright Side of the Sun
I may have mispoke about the Lebron signing of 3 years ago. Its not that I didn’t think he didn’t want to win a championship in that time frame but that he didn’t do ALL he could do to win one.
Most players want guaranteed money for 5 years. Lebron is the exception to this because he knows he will be getting max no matter what happens to his health over those 3 years. He could blow both ACL’s and still get a max deal the next day.
But as a non superstar you wouldn’t risk signing with Cleavland for 5 years knowing that Lebron could bolt in 3 leaving you with at least 2 years left in Cleavland without him. Furthermore it is difficult to build in 1 off season making Lebron’s 3 year deal even less attractive. So other stars wouldn’t want to come in at the start of year 2 of his 3 year deal only to be stuck in Cleavland 3 years without him.
By holding a gun to Cleavland’s head and expecting them to do miracles in limited time and under uncertain future possibilities is absolutely ridiculous. So in that sense I see that he may not have actually wanted a championship and valued friendship more than winning, which is not a trait you want to have in your superstar player.
LeBron was in Cleveland for seven years. I wouldn’t call that a limited time. He gave them a fair chance, then moved on with his life.

Plus, they still have Richard Jefferson on their team.

Yep Jefferson is gonna f*ck that team for the next 5 years
And we’re gonna sweep them every time they meet us in the playoffs!

He has yet to play in teh NBA, european ball is much different that NBA ball, imo, yeah he is good but transcendent. Basketball is a team sport and a european export is jnot going to change a franchise simply over night.
He has yet to prove himself on the otehr side of the border where the competition is the best in the world, where there are more games played, and where each game is longer and more brutal than the european style of play. if tim duncan was a couple years longer than I would have said, yes, this acquistion wcan give SA teh chance it needs to win more chips, but tim duncan is on his last breathes as an NBA player and there are way more teams still better than the aging cadre of the san antonio spurs.
"Remember this sh*t at christmas!"-Terry Crews, The Expendables
I’m not worried about SA next year or the year after while Splitter is developing because he will still be 2nd option to Timmy either on the floor or off the bench. A few years down the road he will fit perfectly into that SA offense once Timmy is gone and they COULD be scary. 7+ feet tall with a solid post game center don’t come around often.
Still not to intimidating when you consider that Parker may be on his way out and Ginobli is getting old
"Remember this sh*t at christmas!"-Terry Crews, The Expendables
Agreed
But I’m not excited they will potentially have another great big man in the league. I’m like an abused dog when it comes to SA, beaten so many times I’m broken. No matter how good my next owner treats me I will always be that same old abused dog.
Lopez without a doubt, because he has shown that he can keep up and play in the NBA; something Splitter hasnt yet.
"Remember this sh*t at christmas!"-Terry Crews, The Expendables
I also would take Lopez because of superstitious reasons; teh last player we got with the fifteenth pick was a young, canadian pg name steve nash

interesting quote by goran
Slovenian second place in the group could be jeopardized only by Brazilians, led by Tiago Splitter and Dragic’s teammate Leandro Barbosa. “LB was a great friend,” Dragic said. “I know him well since we were the second unit on the Suns tem and we communicated a lot when we played together, so I’m ready for it. Only difference is that the Suns are playing pure run-and-gun, and here things are much different,” concluded the 24-year-old bekić.
:-)
Great recap! Thanks!
Im glad to see that he had a better game today. The 5 turnovers are a shame but hopefully that will be okay. It seems like he is so desperate to help his team that he gets over excited. Much better game than yesterday though, and improvement is always a positive! Thanks again for always posting these. I would’ve loved to watch the game today, but unfortunately, I was in school.

Hey guys, this is Goran Dragic interview done by Jaka Lopatic. I just quickly translated it.
After 3 games, you have 2 wins (Tunisia, Croatia) and one loss (USA). Looking back, were you nervous when the championship started?
We are all experienced players. We have played a lot of hard games in the past, including European and world championships, so we were not feeling any kind of nervous energy. And with our first win against Tunisia, we also gained some confidence. We knew, game against USA will be tough, but I think we put up a decent fight. Game against Croatia was practically ‘to be or not to be’ and we could not find the rhythm in the first half. We showed some character at the start of the second half and had a 10 point lead. We then successfully finished the game. I am happy we made it thru some challenging minutes and proved to ourselves that we can play well.
Will winning against Croatia make things easier in future group games?
We were aware this was going to be a tough game. We made progress with a win, but we are still far away from what we want to accomplish. Our next opponent is Brazil and we have a good chance to finish 2nd in the group. That would be great for us. We must continue playing aggressive and well. I predict a victory against Brazil as well as Iran.
What should you correct in the game? There is room for improvement in both defense and offense.
We have too many turnovers. Ball occasionally slips out of hands, but I think that’s just poor focus. We are lacking communication in defense and we must improve defensive rotations. We should play better one on one defense. Croatian players were easily penetrating and then passing to an open player on a 3 point line. Each player should do everything he can to defend his player better and only then expect help defense from teammates.
What is the ‘vibe’ in the locker room?
We have great chemistry. That was felt even more against Croatia because of certain things going on between the countries. We were motivated from the start. If you see a player giving it all, that automatically pulls you forward in wanting to do the same. If we play the way we are capable of and together as a team, only USA can beat us. We are starting to ‘gel’ together and when more players are ‘feeling it’, it makes it that much harder for opponent defense.
In the past season, Barbosa who plays for Brazil, was your teammate. What can you can about him?
Barbosa is a great human being and a good player. He is so fast and he somehow creates his shot easily. He gets his points mostly with penetration. He likes to finish a play by himself. We need to pack the paint when he’s having a ball.
What can we expect from Brazil on Wednesday?
They have a very good front court. Splitter is better offensively than Varejao, but Varejao is a good pick’n’roll defender. Their guards are very fast and they play differently than European teams.
What’s your perspective regarding the high number of Slovenian fans that travelled to Turkey? How is their cheering felt?
Honestly, I feel like I am playing home and not in Turkey. They are of great help to us, so I would like to thank them one more time. Their energy inspires us.
That’s it guys. Also an interesting note: Goran promised a young Slovenian fan his sneaker before the game against Croatia and after it, he delivered on the promise.

Great stuff
They say "don't swim with the sharks", but I'm faster than sharks so it's not a big deal...
What a great interview!
I don’t think it’s possible to not love him. He gave his young fan a sneaker? That’s so darn cute, I don’t even know what else to say!
I also like what he had to say about the improvements that were needed and I like his confidence in predicting victories against Brazil and Iran, while giving them credit. There’s a fine line between sounding arrogant and sounding confident, and he knows how to walk it.
This is all so great Blaz. Thanks again!

Hi,
I didn’t know where to post this to direct message you, and I was lazy to find it.
But I went on the locker room tour today!
And I took so many pictures of it its a little ridicolous!
And I thought I could send you some maybe if you wanted me too?
There are so. many. And I was not allowed to touch the lockers, but I did sit in his seat on the bench. :)
I went on one of those once and apparently I ventured too close to his locker
and the security guard was like miss, you are too close to the benches. That’s so cool! You’re so lucky you got to take pictures!! I was only in there for like 5 seconds and then they moved us along!

It was like a personal tour somehow?
OH MY GOD HIS T MOBILE BILL WAS IN THERE.
Since were not allowed touch, I wanted to like take a picture but I was afraid I’d trip!
I have all the pictures.
They said we werent allowed to go to the Mercury one cause its the season, so that may have been it.
I do know Matt Janning walked right by us in the hallway, and I was like ‘and thats…’ and then i stopped myself, i didnt want to sound like a stalker, and I was like startstruck.
So pathetic.
hahaha that's amazing! When I saw his locker there was an open Gatorade can in the locker. It was pretty awesome!
If I saw Matt Janning in the hallway, I probably would’ve flipped. Not as much as if I saw Goran or something but still. I followed him through both of his summer leagues and nearly gave my mom a heart attack when I ran downstairs to tell her he’d been signed when I first saw the news on Facebook! lol
That is really so cool! I bet your pictures are awesome, haha.

Was it during the season?
Because today there was a banner for one of his old teams, two bills and a bunch of CD’s. Like old games & movies and stuff.
Um I was like silent. We walked away and I was like ‘MATT. JANNING.’ They haven’t stopped making fun of me yet D:
If it was anyone like Grant or Steve or Goran or anyone I think I probably would have been so in shock I would have been normal.
Oh, me and my friend wrote Goran love notes. They’re in an envelope, and they’ll be delivered when get gets back apparently?
I actually took like four, my friend and mom took the rest.
If you can go during the offseason, its so worth it (:
Sorry, I totally don’t mean to sound like I’m bragging or anything! D:
Yeah,
I went to a viewing party where we were able to watch the game on the “Suns Vision” inside the arena. Before hand they took us on a tour of the locker room and the practice court and stuff. It was pretty darn cool. But we weren’t allowed to take pictures. That’s pretty awesome that you got to write him love notes though!

I finished it in the Starbucks at the court and I went on a whole rant about David Stern…and then realized I was out of paper.
Hope Goran likes complaints!
It’s so nice, I was like I should get into this NBA thing.
Hahaha
at least you know he’ll read something you wrote! :)

I’m suddenly very worried about how I come off in that letter.
Im sure you came off fine, hahaha.
At least you didn’t stand starstruck in front of a table while he signed an autograph for you and giggle like a giddy schoolgirl! And then almost faint when you finally were able to say “thank you” and he looked directly at you and said “you’re welcome!” And then watch him laugh while you walked away triumphantly holding his autograph in the air like a trophy! Don't even worry about it.
Before we even started the tour, the tour man said ‘we won’t see any players, they practice in the morning.’ Yeah, he lied. We were walking and we were just past the practice court and Matt Janning walked out of some room and I was midsentence and I was about to say ‘and thats Matt Janning’ but I didn’t want to sound like a stalker. So I stopped at ‘and thats.’ and then shut up and he gave me the weirdest look and made the hello nod and walked away. I’m still in shock.
He doesn’t look as eleven in person.
Hahahaha
“He doesn’t look as eleven in person”
That made me laugh!

But I just feel like Stephen Curry looks insanely young. It doesn’t help that he’s always sticking his mouthguard out of his mouth. That just irritates me for some reason, lol.

The beard-type thing he's probably been growing since his Sweet 16 run doesn't even help. He's just too baby-faced.

It's true.
I have a whole list somewhere. Curry does, I’m constantly like thirteen? No. Not thirteen. The mouthguard thing is my biggest pet peeve EVER. You don’t even know.
Everytime I watch him play,
I just feel like saying:
Sir, please. Just keep your mouthguard in your mouth, where it belongs!

I might do that, if i wasn't so captivated by his play. He's Steve Nash-lite, although not quite as unselfish.
Wait, how did I get drawn into this? I’m a guy, so I’m not sure I belong in this discusion.
I don't think him being a guy has anything to do with it! lol
It’s not like a conversation where we talk about how cute Goran is or something.. (At least not anymore)
I would think that the hanging mouthguard could very easily bother a male, just as much as it bothers a female… :)

Or,
we could go with how the first time my brothers best friend came to our new house (the very first night we came up with Gorgasmic) was the same night he dropped 32 in Utah, and at the start of the game he asked me ‘whos that lanky white dude?’ and I said ‘Goran, he’s my favorite’ and he was like ‘why? He’s a bench guy.’ And I was like ‘just watch!’ And by the end of the half he was like ‘damn that was a sexy move! I like this lanky white boy!’
That’s my personal favorite.
That is a good one!

So this, I don’t mind!
But he’s not Justin Bieber, he’s just Foreign Goran.
(:
… I was there in Utah. I saw that game, it was my birthday present. I had a bad feeling when we lead by 17 because I knew we would give it up and Dragic’s great performance would be for nothing. It got really loud at the end of the 3rd quarter.
Don't trade Dudley!
Even though we lost, it was an amazing game.. He had fire in his eyes that night.
I kept the cover of the sports section of the AZ Republic the day afterwards and held onto it. Then, a few months later when I got to get his autograph, I had him sign it! So I’ll never forget that game.. It is truly unfortunate that his career game was a loss. It just seems wrong.

I asked my mom to take me for his signature and she said ‘I didn’t take your brother to Canseco, and I’m not taking you to Dragic.’ So I dropped it.
On the mentions of still having newspapers, I was in Alaska all summer and when I came home the Arizona Republic right after that Spurs game was still exactly where I left it. Made me smile.
I got home from California with my choir the day after the Spurs game
and had the paper waiting for me in the car with that ADORABLE picture of him on it! But my dad, not realizing I wanted to keep it (even though I keep every article that even says something about him in it) threw it away! :(

Barbosa about Slovenia and Dragic
I believe in our team and that we can beat Slovenia. We will have to play a very good game in order to do that. We watched the game between Croatia and Slovenia and saw that Slovenia can play at a high level.
Slovenia is staying at the same hotel as we, so i sometimes call Goran to come hang out with me. He’s a good kid and a friend. But we don’t talk basketball, only soccer. Dragic is an important part of what Slovenia is trying to acomplish. Additional plus for Slovenia is their high number of fans supporting them.
Blaz
Just a thought...
I was watching the replay of the USA-Brazil game last night and LB took a ton of 3s. He made a couple tough ones, but missed most of them. How badly did he hurt his wrist? He was a knock-down shooter before, but ever since that surgery he’s been a shell of himself shooting-wise. Is he just going through a cold streak or is his wrist really messed up?
At least he still has his blinding speed though.
Yeah, on Brazil he has to create his own shot a lot rather than waiting on the wing for a certain Steve Nash to pass it to him. The funny thing was the few he made were tough shots he had to create himself. H missed most of the open ones.
Hopefully he can get it going again in Toronto. He has a pretty good PG there to feed him the ball in Jose Calderon.
I haven't seen anything on here yet,
but did anyone happen to see the Slovenia vs. Iran game today? I wasn’t able to watch it but I just looked at the box score and it looks like Goran had a great game. 18 pts., 6 reb., 2 ast., a steal, and 0 fouls with only 2 turnovers. Now, since I didn’t watch the game, I don’t want to rely on the box score, but I don’t see how that couldn’t have been a great game for him!
"If the Suns can shock the world

According to boxscores, Goran did well, LB did well (17 points), and Hedo didn't do much of anything (5 points). I'm glad Slovenia snatched 2nd place.
Me too.

they were blowing out China like crazy, up 20 pts in the first quarter and 40 by the end.

Yep, I saw that after I posted that. like I said, I only saw a limited boxscore.
He’s been terrible shooting-wise, but he’s doing everything else well.
