In all seriousness -

I like it.

Considering what’s available and the (very) little I saw of him last year (17 minutes to be exact) he was impressive: scrapping for balls/rebounds, catching and finishing hard, and hanging around and cleaning up offensive rebounds. Tough dude. Feels like Lou-Upgrade to me.

he could be somewhere between

Lou and Jarron Collins.

I thought

that he deserved to play more minutes than Jarron Collins, heck maybe even start the games, but that’s just me. Collins to me was more like a liability in both sides of the floor.

right

I think the only reason Collins played was because he’d been with the team all season. Gentry knew what he was going to get every night. That’s vital in the playoffs where every possession counts.

I echo Scott and Eutychus's statements.

I’ve been calling for this ever since he was traded away. He’s been a rebounding beast everywhere he’s been, and he also seems to have a great motor. He’s a perfect practice player and he seems capable of filling in for short stretches if needed. He understands his role and should not disrupt the chemistry at all.

I was actually planning on writing a piece about him being a perfect fit this weekend, but homework got in the way.

by Omaha Sun on Aug 30, 2010 4:19 PM MDT reply actions

Someone on the team with a higher rebound-rate than Robin Lopez!

I was worried for a while there.

Actually, I have to say I feel “calm” about this. Not excited, but not bummed. Relieved, maybe.

He can join the pickup games right now, hopefully, and get totally ingrained into the team so he can step in as needed, like Collins did last season.

Hey, his offense didn't suck in the D League, either.

17.6 per 40 minutes, (better than 58%) to go with 16 boards – maybe with a full training camp, he’ll push Warrick/Lawal, creating MORE depth problems for us (good problems to have).

I was surprised and yet not so surprised to see this.

Im glad. Im not stoked out of my mind or anything but I think this was a smart choice.
His playtime was limited but I liked what I saw in terms of how hard he worked out there. Plus, we already know that he fits in well with the chemistry. There is a picture of the bench from Game 3 against the Spurs when Goran hit that ridiculous three pointer with the foul, and Dwayne Jones looked like he was one of the most excited guys on the bench.
The more I think about this, the more I like it.

by Dragic_is_Magic on Aug 30, 2010 6:14 PM MDT reply actions

He is probably perfect

The role he will be asked to fill is harder than some think. In the event of foul trouble or injury he could play 15-20 + min a game or get dnpcds for long stretches.Takes a team guy to fill that role.

by stevedavis_ on Aug 30, 2010 6:22 PM MDT reply actions

I didn't even know he was waived.

But I’m glad he’s back on board. I have a feeling if Dwayne Jones plays well, he’ll get some decent minutes.

Steve Nash is my mancrush. But Goran Dragic is the 2nd coming of Manu Ginobili, which makes him just as tasty.

Excessive enthusiasm aside ...

You have to admit that getting this guy back could work out to be a solid move. He works hard and he’s not hard work. During last season, there were some porous and terrifying moments (-) with the offensively minded first team until Lou, Dragon, and Duds came in stabilize the game defensively (+/-).

Jarron Collins

Well, Jarron Collins managed to stay on the Utah Jazz for years, didn’t he? I’m not prepared to call Jerry Sloan an idiot.

by 8472species on Aug 31, 2010 8:17 AM MDT reply actions   1 recs

I'm not prepared

to call Gentry an idiot either.
True, Collins didn’t put up big numbers, but he is one of a very exclusive group of men who can say he started on a team that swept the Tim Duncan-era Spurs in the playoffs.
Maturity is the key to an insurance big man. One of the things that tends to happen with up-and-coming players is they see an opportunity to play in injury relief as their “big chance” and try to do too much, which is disastrous for everybody.
I remember when Collins took over the starting role in relief of Lopez, he said if he scored 20, that meant the team would be in big trouble.
Collins did enough to let Coach Gentry keep his starting and bench rotations in order, which was pretty much the key in both the playoff series we won.
Many times in the past, the Suns have struggled and lost when subs moved in for injured starters.

by suns68 on Aug 31, 2010 9:08 AM MDT via mobile up reply actions   2 recs

people are so concerned with stats

that Collins is looked upon as a loser for not filling the box score.

Frankly, if the coach is comfortable with a guy and the team wins, then you stay with it. And the Suns had a great winning percentage with Collins on the floor.

I agree that collins did his job

and his job was not to fill the box score, but it would have been nice if he had put the ball in the bucket a few times.
although it’s hard to argue with the whole sweeping the spurs thing…but i still miss KT, IMO the best duncan stopper we’ve had.

this is a good move..

some of the summer trades had me pondering.. but this one will do nicely.

question is just how fluid will the PF position be this upcoming season? If there’s no definite starter/recognized 4, then the flexibility at this position will allow us to win a bunch of games. Moreover, we have 3 players who weigh ~250 lbs, and another who plays like it, so size isn’t an issue except vs Lakers & Celtics. If Robin can add 10→15 lbs of muscle (which would help his back, btw), then you’re suddenly looking at a team that can bang with the rest.

I wasn’t aware there even was an ESPN 3. Take that, ESPN.

by 8472species on Aug 31, 2010 7:30 PM MDT up reply actions

And after ESPN facilitated LeBron James’ sleazy stunt, I wouldn’t be sure God did make ESPN. I’d rather add ESPN to my list of things Satan might have created if God allowed him to create anything. The only other thing on the list was cockroaches.

Cockroaches are sturdy, tenacious creatures.

And a source of disease, terror and disgust to humans.

by 8472species on Aug 31, 2010 8:17 PM MDT up reply actions

Cockroaches themselves are not actually a source of disease; they only carry organisms that can transmit disease – as do all living creatures large enough to carry bacteria. However, they can and do contaminate food with excrement, but consuming their feces isn’t any more of a particular danger than consuming the feces of the majority of other creatures.

As for terror and disgust – to each his own. I am not particularly frightened by a passive, non-venomous creature 1/100,000th of my size. And while I don’t allow them in my house any more than any other creature that isn’t my pet, that alone doesn’t make them inherently evil, does it?

Yes, this is what I argue about without basketball.

by waxmonkey on Aug 31, 2010 9:29 PM MDT up reply actions

I am completely unsold on Earl, but a late lottery pick entering his second year should surely fetch more than old, white and hairy Fabricio.

Most likely scenario is that Earl ends up as a throw-in, a la Joe Alexander (the lottery bust of ’08) when he was packaged in the John Salmons/Hakim Warrick trade.

did Suns always plan to re-sign Jones?

Does anyone else think the Suns were prepared to get Dwayne Jones back all along? That would explain why there was never any indication that they were looking very hard for a backup center, why we never heard that they were doing any of the things we thought they could do, such as bringing back Kurt Thomas.

by 8472species on Sep 1, 2010 11:23 AM MDT reply actions

the signing of Jones

is a no-risk, potential-reward scenario. He is cheap and willing to ride the bench.

Paul Coro on azcentral.com wrote today that the Suns wanted to bring him back all along. But that doesn’t preclude the Suns from signing/acquiring a better option at a later date. At the very worst, he’s just another non-guaranteed asset to include in a bigger trade (like LB for Turkoglu). At the very, very best, he’s a bigger Lou.

Yep.

I’m sure the FO looked around to see who was available, but they had Dwayne in the back of their minds the whole time. They didn’t find anyone they thought was worth signing, so the brought back Jones who seems to be a perfect fit.

I personally thought and hoped they were going to re-sign him the whole time.

I Buy the idea they planned to bring him back,But why risk it when they could have thrown in taylor griffin instead of jones? If you remember the bobcats were supposed to end up with jones. Anyway I think were lucky to have him
